Application of Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 7030

Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 7030 is processed for automotive interior structural carriers by injection molding with a 35–50 mm diameter general-purpose screw carrying an L/D ratio of 20:1–25:1 and a non-return valve clearance not exceeding 0.03 mm. Pellets are predried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −40°C or lower at 100°C–110°C for 4–6 h until residual moisture is below 0.02 wt%; closed-loop hopper loading is applied when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. The nozzle melt temperature is held at 250°C–270°C, with a hot-runner manifold temperature within 5°C of the nozzle setpoint to prevent knit-line degradation in multi-gated instrument panel lower carriers and HVAC housing subcomponents. Backpressure is controlled at 0.5–1.5 MPa and screw surface speed at 0.3–0.7 m/s. Mold wall temperature is maintained at 70°C–90°C; oil- or pressurized-water units are preferred over electric cartridge-only heating because mold temperature variation greater than ±5°C across a 1,200 mm flow length produces visible sink marks at rib intersections and boss bases. The grade is injected through valve gates with a first-stage velocity of 30–50 mm/s after gate passage, followed by a second-stage velocity of 80–120 mm/s to prevent jetting in glove box frame geometries. Packing pressure of 60–80 MPa for 2.5–4.0 s/mm of nominal wall thickness reduces post-mold shrinkage to 0.5–0.7% when tested according to ISO 294-4:2018. Heat-staked inserts in HVAC housing bosses are installed after local preheating to 100°C–110°C. Short-term heat resistance is evaluated by ISO 75-2:2013 method A at 1.80 MPa, with a typical deflection temperature in the 118°C–126°C range; long-term thermal aging at 110°C for 1,000 h per ISO 188:2023 is used to confirm tensile strength retention. Volatile organic compound emission is measured with VDA 278:2011, and automotive interior programs normally require total VOC below 600 µg/g and fog condensate below 2.0 mg per 10 g; lot-specific results must be verified against the supplier certificate because published grade-specific data for this Cixi Guozhiguang material is limited.

What Changes When Pigmented PC/ABS 7030 Replaces PC/PBT in Unpainted Cowl Vent Grilles?

Replacing PC/PBT with a pigmented 70/30 PC/ABS in an unpainted cowl vent grille changes the failure envelope from solvent microcracking resistance to low-temperature impact retention. Carbon black masterbatch dosed at 2.0–2.5 wt% active pigment is required for weatherable black parts; the carrier resin must be selected to avoid free-flowing additives that elevate VDA 278:2011 fog values. Ultraviolet exposure under SAE J2527:2017 daylight filter conditions at 0.55 W/m²/mm at 340 nm can maintain a color shift ΔE*ab below 3.0 after 1,200 kJ/m² when carbon black dispersion is optimized. Titanium dioxide co-loading should be avoided in exterior PC/ABS blends because photocatalytic oxidation of the ABS phase accelerates chalking. The lower melt stiffness of PC/ABS 7030 compared with PC/PBT requires injection speed to be reduced by 10%–20% during the final 20 mm of flow length to avoid flow marks at the windshield lower edge. On a 1,000 mm cross-flow ribbed grille, sequential valve-gate opening with 0.2 s stagger reduces differential shrinkage to a part deflection of 0.2–0.4 mm after 24 h post-mold aging at 23°C. Mounting bosses in the grille shell are molded with a minimum boss wall of 2.0 mm and a length-to-wall ratio below 5:1 to prevent sink marks opposite rib intersections. Low-temperature impact remains the critical release criterion; notched Charpy testing per ISO 179-1:2010 at −20°C is recommended because windshield washer fluid exposed parts can experience brittle failure if the ABS phase loses ductility under absorbed methanol. Paintability is not assumed for the unpainted execution; if a painted variant is programmed, a single-layer waterborne low-bake system at 80°C requires adhesion promotion because unpigmented PC/ABS 7030 has a surface polarity lower than polyamide and may show cross-cut rating below 3 on ISO 2409:2020 without plasma or flame treatment.

Electrical enclosure programs for battery management system housings and indoor charging pile sub-enclosures use Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 7030 when low-temperature ductility and dimensional stability are more critical than elevated ignition resistance. The material is not assumed to carry a UL 94 V-0 classification below 3.0 mm; where enclosure live parts require glow-wire resistance at 850°C, a separately recognized flame-retardant PC/ABS grade is substituted. For non-current-carrying external walls, IEC 62196-1:2022 and OEM internal specifications typically assess impact strength after thermal cycling from −40°C to 85°C, with a ramp rate of 1°C/min and a dwell time of 1 h per extreme. The thermal expansion coefficient under ISO 11359-2:2021 is generally within 0.6–0.8×10⁻⁴ K⁻¹ in the flow direction; this value governs snap-fit dimensional tolerance in a 400 mm charger shell with integrated latch hooks. Shot-to-shot flow variation is monitored by melt mass-flow rate at 260°C/5.0 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022, with an acceptance band of ±2.5 g/10 min around the approved reference. Moisture-related surface defects on textured A-side surfaces are avoided by conveying from dryer to feed throat via dry-air lines with a dew point no higher than −30°C. Weld line strength at the latch interface is tested on a falling dart instrumented impact tester according to ISO 6603-2:2000; where the latch height exceeds 3.0 mm, a local increase in mold temperature to 90°C is applied because low-temperature mold surfaces freeze the flow front before molecular interdiffusion completes.

Power Tool Clamshell Molding and Drop Impact Retention

In power tool clamshells, the controlling rheological parameter is not only mold filling but also the ability to resist impact after contact with hydraulic oil and organic coolants. PC/ABS 7030 is processed at the lower end of the melt-temperature window, commonly 245°C–260°C, to limit thermal degradation of the ABS phase in hot-runner molds with multiple drops. The mold is set to 65°C–80°C; for mirror-gloss black shells, rapid heat-cool molding with induction-heated cores at 120°C for 3 s is used to prevent flow lines. Notched Charpy impact at 23°C per ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 is generally in the 35–45 kJ/m² range for a nominal 70/30 PC/ABS, but the value measured after three closed-loop recycle histories must remain above 25 kJ/m² for drill housings that undergo 1.2 m drop onto concrete per internal requirements aligned with IEC 60745-1:2006. Soft-touch TPE overmolding onto the clamshell substrate requires a substrate surface temperature of 80°C–90°C at the moment of overmold injection; lower temperatures reduce interfacial melt bonding and lead to peel force below 2.0 N/mm when tested per ISO 10365:2019. Serial number bosses and battery latch features should be gated with a minimum wall of 2.2 mm to prevent high-speed filling from inducing brittleness at the ABS-rich boundary layer. The grade should not be used for motor gearcase structures where continuous oil mists above 60°C are present; the PC phase is susceptible to environmental stress cracking in esters and polyalkylene glycols, and a PA6 or glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS grade is preferred.

Hot-water detergent resistance in appliance control panel carriers becomes the controlling design parameter when PC/ABS 7030 replaces stamped steel or flame-retardant ABS in front-load washing machines and countertop espresso machine frames. The material is processed in a 60°C–80°C mold to balance grained surface replication against cycle time; grained surfaces with a grain depth of 0.025–0.045 mm are reproduced when the melt temperature is kept at 255°C–270°C and the first-stage fill speed is not reduced below 60 mm/s. Because PC/ABS 7030 is unfilled, bosses for hinge screws in a washing machine control panel must be reinforced by adding a minimum boss outer diameter of 2.0× the screw major diameter and a flat root radius rather than a sharp corner at the boss base. This reduces hoop stress cracking after repeated exposure to alkaline detergent solutions at 60°C for 500 cycles. Chemical resistance to household cleaners is evaluated by the patch test method of ISO 22088-3:2005 under 0.5% externally applied strain; crazing at the ABS-rich surface after exposure to anionic surfactant solutions is the dominant rejection mode. IEC 60335-1:2020 glow-wire testing at 750°C on 1.5 mm wall stock is a typical acceptance criterion for unoccupied appliance enclosures, while 850°C glow-wire ignition temperature requires a flame-retardant PC/ABS grade. Cycle time is established by gate-seal time measured with cavity pressure transducers set to switch over at 70% of peak injection pressure; switchover after the gate freezes produces overpacking at the sub-gate and increases part weight by up to 0.8%.

When Regrind Content Exceeds 15 wt% in Electrical Enclosures

Rework from 16-cavity electrical enclosure tools is incorporated back into Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 7030 only after dry regrind is blended at a controlled percentage by batch weight. Above 15 wt% regrind, the melt mass-flow rate typically increases because chain scission in the ABS phase shortens relaxation time; on a 260°C/5.0 kg test per ISO 1133-1:2022, an upward shift of 2–6 g/10 min relative to virgin material is common. This shift produces inconsistent switchover in hydraulic injection machines with fixed screw-position triggers unless cavity pressure-based switchover is implemented. Notched Charpy impact at 23°C may fall by 10%–20% after three heat histories at 260°C; the loss is more severe at thin-wall bosses below 2.0 mm. Regrind flakes are blended through a low-shear gravimetric mixer with a maximum particle size of 6 mm and a fines fraction below 0.5 wt%; oversized flakes create feed bridging in hopper throats. Moisture content of regenerated flake before blending is reduced below 0.05 wt% in the same desiccant drying profile as virgin pellet. For enclosures requiring snap-fit insertion force of 25–40 N after assembly, the regrind fraction is limited to 10 wt% unless full mechanical revalidation per ISO 294-1:2017 and ISO 527-2:2012 is performed on the specific regrind batch. Color variation from regrind-induced yellowing is controlled by monitoring the b* value on injection-molded plaques with a spectrophotometer; a shift above 1.5 CIE unit indicates oxidative degradation of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 7030 is a 70/30 polycarbonate–acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied in pellet form for injection moulding. The grade designation is interpreted as a nominal 70 % polycarbonate and 30 % ABS composition, although the producer may adjust impact-modifier and additive ratios within the designation. The material is specified when a part requires a balance of heat resistance, low-temperature toughness, and melt flow that cannot be met by ABS or by 60/40 PC/ABS compounds. It is used in structural and semi-structural injection moulded parts such as instrument panel side brackets, centre console substrates, HVAC housings, power-tool shells, and uninterruptible power-supply covers. Batch-certified values for the material should be obtained from the producer; the ranges in this document are representative of the 70/30 PC/ABS class and are not certified release data for a specific lot.

Direct ultraviolet exposure without UV stabilization or opaque pigmentation can cause surface chalking and gloss loss. For sunlit exterior parts, additional UV packages or opaque paint film are required. Because the material is amorphous, chemical resistance is moderate: ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and strong acids can induce environmental stress cracking. Published data for the specific unfilled Cixi Guozhiguang 7030 grade under long-term ultraviolet and chemical stress cracking is limited; design validation should therefore use lot-specific tensile, impact, and melt-volume-flow-rate data from the producer.

What Limits the Drying Window Before Melt Processing?

Residual moisture is the critical pre-processing variable. Polycarbonate-containing alloys absorb moisture from ambient air and undergo hydrolysis during melting when residual moisture exceeds 0.02 % by mass. The failure is not cosmetic only: hydrolysis shortens the polycarbonate chain, reducing melt viscosity, weld-line strength, and notched impact. A desiccant dryer with a supply dew point of ≤ -40 °C is required. Pellets should be dried at 90–100 °C for 3–4 h, or at 80–90 °C for 4–6 h in shallow trays, to reach ≤ 0.02 % as confirmed by ISO 15512 or Karl Fischer titration. Karl Fischer coulometric titration with vaporizer at 160 °C is preferred because weight-loss methods can be affected by volatile additives. Hot-air hopper dryers without desiccant media are not suitable at high relative humidity because they cannot achieve the necessary dew point. At relative humidity above 60 %, open storage should be limited to 2 h before drying because surface condensation accelerates moisture uptake.

After drying, the material is processed in a three-zone injection screw with L/D 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1. Barrel melt-temperature settings from rear to nozzle of 250–280 °C are used. Mold temperature should be held at 70–90 °C for dimensional stability and surface finish; high-gloss surfaces may require 90–100 °C. Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa assists homogenization without excessive shear. Injection speed is moderate to high for thin-wall flow, but residence time above 5 min at full melt temperature should be avoided because prolonged thermal exposure degrades the polycarbonate phase and increases yellowing. Gate size should be at least 50 % of the nominal wall thickness, and mold vent depth of 0.02–0.03 mm should be used to prevent burn marks. Hot-runner systems should use externally heated manifolds; internally heated systems can create hot spots that degrade the polycarbonate phase.

Phase morphology of 70/30 PC/ABS is controlled by the viscosity ratio of the polycarbonate and styrene-acrylonitrile phases during compounding. In twin-screw extrusion, the ABS phase disperses as discrete domains when the viscosity ratio is near unity; if the polycarbonate phase viscosity is too low at high shear, co-continuous morphology can form and low-temperature impact retention may decline. Injection-moulded weld-line strength is also governed by this phase architecture. Batch-to-batch variation in ABS rubber particle size and SAN molecular weight can shift notched impact at -20 °C by several kilojoules per square metre even when melt volume-flow rate remains within specification. Consequently, incoming lots for critical safety-related parts should be tested for melt volume-flow rate and notched impact.

Comparative Property Ranges Across PC/ABS Blend Ratios

For 70/30, 60/40, and 80/20 PC/ABS classes, representative property ranges are shown in Table 1. The values are class-level data and are not batch-certified for 7030.

Nominal density of 7030-class material is 1.12–1.16 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1. Mould shrinkage is 0.5–0.7 % per ISO 294-4. Thermal response reflects the three phases of the blend: the polycarbonate glass transition near 145 °C, the SAN phase near 100–110 °C, and the butadiene rubber phase at approximately -80 °C. The ABS phase limits upper continuous service temperature, while the polycarbonate phase maintains modulus retention up to 120 °C. At -30 °C, notched Izod impact may fall below 15 kJ/m²; impact-critical parts should therefore be validated at the lowest service temperature. When North American specifications require ASTM D638-14 Type I tensile data, values should be reported separately; conversion from ISO 527-2/1A/50 is not valid because specimen geometry and straining rate differ.

The comparison shows the technical basis for selecting 7030. At equal wall thickness, a 60/40 alloy fills longer flow paths but sacrifices heat resistance and stiffness. An 80/20 alloy offers higher heat deflection temperature and tensile modulus but exhibits lower melt flow and requires higher injection pressure; thin-wall sections may show short shots. 7030 occupies the intermediate position: lower melt viscosity than 80/20, and higher thermal stability and stiffness than 60/40. In applications requiring flame retardancy, this comparison is not sufficient because 7030 is normally a general-purpose HB-class material. Flame-retardant PC/ABS grades use different additive packages and should not be compared on mechanical properties alone.

When a 70/30 Alloy Replaces ABS in Load-Bearing Enclosures

Replacement of ABS with 7030 in load-bearing enclosures changes tool design and assembly tolerances. The heat deflection temperature under 1.80 MPa increases by approximately 20–30 °C compared with general-purpose ABS, and the coefficient of linear thermal expansion decreases from roughly 80–100 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ for ABS to 60–70 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ for the 70/30 alloy. This reduces warpage in large covers and maintains boss-bearing strength at elevated service temperatures. However, the melt temperature must be raised by 20–30 °C compared with ABS, and mold temperature must be controlled in a narrower band; tools designed for ABS often lack sufficient gate size for the higher viscosity of PC/ABS, causing gate blush or jetting. Boss design should avoid sharp internal corners and high knit-line stress because the polycarbonate phase is more notch-sensitive than ABS at low temperatures.

Typical wall thickness for 7030 applications is 1.5–4.0 mm. Thick-walled parts above 4.0 mm require longer holding pressure and lower mold temperature to prevent sink marks and voids. For thin-wall parts below 1.5 mm, the upper melt-temperature limit and high injection speed should be used. Metal inserts can be moulded in if preheated to 120–150 °C to prevent stress cracking around the insert. Amine-based processing aids should be avoided because they can catalyse polycarbonate chain scission. Regrind addition up to 20–25 % is common for non-cosmetic parts; higher levels reduce notched impact and shift heat deflection temperature. Avoid contamination with polyvinyl chloride or acetal, which can degrade the polycarbonate phase.

Compared with polycarbonate alone, 7030 fills complex housings at lower injection pressure, but it has lower tensile modulus, lower clarity, and reduced heat resistance. Compared with 60/40 PC/ABS, 7030 provides better dimensional stability under thermal cycling. Compared with 80/20 PC/ABS, it provides easier thin-wall fill. The practical trade-off is that impact and flow improvements can be reversed by improper drying, excessive regrind, or incorrect barrel residence time. Painting with two-component polyurethane systems is typical; moulded parts should be annealed or solvent-stress-tested before painting to avoid solvent attack at knit lines. For electroplating, a specialized plating-grade PC/ABS should be specified, because general-purpose 7030 may not produce the required etch morphology for consistent electroless adhesion.

Material marking can be based on ISO 11469 as PC+ABS. Regulatory status for RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 should be confirmed with the supplier against each production batch. If the part must pass IEC 60695-2-12 glow-wire or UL 94 V-0 criteria, a dedicated flame-retardant grade is required; addition of halogen-free flame retardants to a non-FR grade can alter notched impact and melt flow. Long-term continuous use above 100 °C under load is not recommended because the ABS phase is the limiting component. For outdoor use, UV stabilization and opaque pigmentation are required.
