Within automotive interior modules, Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050 is specified for lower instrument panel trim carriers, HVAC bezels, speaker grille frames and seat side trim where dimensional stability after solar load and low-speed knee impact demand a 50/50 polycarbonate/ABS balance. Injection moulds for these parts are commonly run on hydraulic or servo-electric machines of 1500 kN to 3500 kN clamp force. The material is dried in a desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point of −40°C to −50°C for 4 h at 80°C until residual moisture falls below 0.02 wt% by Karl Fischer titration per ISO 15512:2016. Mould shrinkage for unfilled 50/50 PC/ABS typically ranges from 0.4% to 0.7% along the flow direction and 0.5% to 0.8% transverse, measured on 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaques per ISO 294-4:2018. Because downstream clip towers and screw bosses act as local heat sinks, cooling-channel layout must maintain tool surface temperature at 70°C to 90°C. Lower tool temperatures produce skin-layer orientation that increases post-ejection warpage after thermal ageing at 80°C for 500 h. For automotive interior specifications, the compound is frequently assessed for volatile organic compounds and semi-volatile condensables under VDA 278:2011. Lot-to-lot variation in ABS rubber particle size can shift fogging values, which requires incoming inspection of each batch when the part is positioned within 300 mm of the windshield. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the numerical ranges in this section are engineering starting values and lot release certificates govern.
Battery charger shells and power adapter housings moulded from Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050 encounter a recurring weld-line limitation at printed circuit board standoffs and snap-fit bosses. When melt fronts divide around a core pin and reunite, the entangled network across the weld plane is interrupted. Notched Izod impact measured on bars with the weld line in the notch per ASTM D256-10(2018) typically retains 35% to 55% of the bulk impact energy. The width of this drop depends on melt-front angle, hold pressure and mould temperature. Melt-front angles below 75°, evaluated by filling simulation, generate V-notch-shaped weak zones; angles above 135° produce a broader but less severe separation of ABS-rich skins and PC-rich core material. In production, a valve-gated hot runner with tip temperature held at 260°C to 270°C and cavity steel at 80°C improves weld-line healing. Packing pressure must be applied before gate freeze. For a 2.0 mm wall, gates freeze in 5 s to 8 s, so hold profiles are cut into 2 s decrement steps from 70 MPa to 30 MPa. If the end-product fire enclosure is tested under IEC 62368-1:2018, the moulded wall thickness used for compliance must be stated. A general-purpose 50/50 PC/ABS lot may certify HB only, while V-0 usually requires a flame-retardant variant or a thicker nominal wall. Do not combine this material with polyamide-contaminated regrind because the two phases undergo interfacial slip and impact loss.
For low-voltage terminal boxes and control enclosures, warpage after ejection is governed by differential shrinkage between flow and transverse directions, while long-term gear-train and terminal-screw loads introduce creep. Unfilled PC/ABS 5050 exhibits anisotropic shrinkage because ABS rubber domains align in the flow direction. A rectangular enclosure with a 300 mm × 200 mm footprint and 2.5 mm nominal wall can exhibit corner deflection of 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm when tool surface temperature is held at 50°C. Raising the tool to 80°C and using sequential valve-gate opening can reduce corner deflection to below 0.8 mm, measured on a surface plate after 24 h at 23°C and 50% RH. Annealing is performed at 15°C below the HDT for 1 h; HDT at 1.8 MPa is measured by ASTM D648-18. Creep in screw bosses and snap-fit beams is evaluated with ISO 899-1:2017 tensile creep. The 1000 h apparent modulus at 0.5% initial strain commonly decreases relative to short-term flexural modulus, which is why terminal screw torque should not exceed 0.4 N·m when the boss wall is 2.0 mm. Post-mould stress cracking under industrial cleaning agents is a known failure mode. Immersion testing in 50% isopropanol per ASTM D543-21 for 24 h is used to screen moulded-in stress. Sharp internal corners and uncleaned gate vestige lower the stress-cracking threshold during service.
Medical diagnostic carts and benchtop analyzer covers use Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050 where daily cleaning-agent exposure and castor-impact toughness decide service life. The raw material does not by itself constitute a biocompatibility claim. Final device validation under ISO 10993-1:2018 and cytotoxicity testing per ISO 10993-5:2009 are performed on the finished article. For non-patient-contact housings, repeated disinfection with quaternary ammonium compounds and 70% isopropanol creates environmental stress cracking when moulded-in stress exceeds a critical threshold. Chemical resistance is screened by ASTM D543-21 immersion practice for 7 d at 23°C, with visual assessment under 10× magnification. The material is dried to 0.02 wt% before moulding; hydrolysis of the polycarbonate phase at elevated moisture produces surface splay and a measurable loss of impact. In the field, wheeled cart housings experience low-velocity impact at 1 m/s to 2 m/s. Impact performance is ranked by notched Izod per ISO 180:2019 at 23°C and 0°C, the lower value being relevant for air-conditioned hospital corridors. Because these housings are frequently assembled with threaded inserts, boss outer diameter should be 2.0× to 2.5× the insert diameter to reduce hoop stress. Flammability requirements for medical electrical equipment are derived from IEC 60601-1:2005 + A1:2012 + A2:2020. The relevant fire enclosure clause may require UL 94 certification at the final wall thickness. A general-purpose 50/50 lot cannot be assumed to meet V-0 without test documentation.

When wall sections drop below 1.2 mm in smart speaker grilles and router covers, filling pressure and hesitation marks determine the injection window for Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050. Melt temperature at the nozzle is raised to 270°C to 280°C for thin-wall flow, but barrel residence time above 260°C is limited to 5 min to 8 min because the PC phase begins thermal rearrangement and brown streaks form near the screw tip. Injection velocity is set from 150 mm/s to 250 mm/s, with switch-over to pack at 95% to 98% of fill volume. Venting depth is held to 0.025 mm on the parting line because PC/ABS outgassing can deposit on polished tool surfaces. Melt volume-flow rate is determined at 260°C / 5 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022. A lot-specific value below 15 cm³/10 min may require a higher melt temperature, while a value above 25 cm³/10 min may sacrifice impact due to lower molecular weight of the PC phase. Rib-to-wall ratio is kept at 0.5:1 to 0.6:1; thicker rib bases generate sink marks on exposed surfaces. The material should not be blended with PE-carrier colour concentrate above 1 wt% because the carrier forms discrete lamellae and delamination occurs at the gate freeze region. For speaker grille perforations, hole spacing below 0.8 mm creates high-shear regions and micro-strand breaks. Mould filling simulation with 0.1 mm element size is used to identify shear rates above 50,000 s⁻¹. On production-scale injection moulding machines, short-shot trials at 90% fill volume are used to verify balance across a multicavity tool before pressure-limited filling is accepted.
Sheet extrusion followed by vacuum forming of interior trim skins, equipment covers and vehicle seat backs subjects Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050 to two thermal histories: initial pellet drying, then reheating of extruded sheet to the thermoforming window. Pellets are dried at 80°C for 4 h to 6 h; moisture content is held below 0.02 wt% before extrusion. The first thermal history occurs in a single-screw sheet line with 30:1 L/D to 36:1 L/D and a barrier screw. Barrel zones are profiled from 230°C in the feed section to 250°C at the die, while gear pump inlet pressure is kept between 6 MPa and 10 MPa to avoid surging. The second thermal history occurs in the forming station, where sheet surface temperature is brought to 170°C to 190°C using dual-sided quartz heaters. At this condition the sheet sag over a 600 mm span should be below 25 mm before vacuum is applied. Draw ratio is kept at 1.5:1 to 2.0:1 for corner radii above 3 mm; deeper draws produce thin-out below 0.8 mm and tear initiation at the sheet clamp frame. After forming, residual stress in the part is reduced by annealing at 85°C for 2 h, which is particularly relevant when the formed part later contacts cleaning agents. Regrind from skeletal scrap can be reintroduced at 15 wt% to 20 wt%, but each heat history reduces notched impact energy. After 3 regrind cycles the impact value is measured by ISO 179-1:2020 Charpy notched at 23°C and compared with virgin sheet before approval. Avoid combining edge trim that has been contaminated with cellulose dust or amine-based cleaning residues because the polycarbonate phase can undergo premature degradation during sheet extrusion.

Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050 is supplied as an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy with a nominal 50:50 wt% ratio. The grade is intended for injection molding of thin-wall housings, mounting brackets, and interior trim substrates in which heat distortion temperature, low-temperature impact ductility, and moderate melt flow must be balanced. Because the trade designation is not an ISO or ASTM grade code, incoming quality control should verify the polycarbonate/ABS ratio by thermogravimetric analysis according to ISO 11358-1:2022 and confirm the absence of mineral filler by ash testing according to ISO 3451-1:2019. Residual moisture must be reduced to less than 0.02 wt% before plastication; closed-loop desiccant dryers are set to 80–100 °C for 3–4 h in production practice. Nozzle melt temperature is maintained from 245 °C to 270 °C, and mold temperature is controlled from 60 °C to 90 °C. The material is not inherently flame-retarded; any UL 94 classification must be confirmed on the molded part at the specified wall thickness.
Because the 5050 designation denotes a nominal 50 wt% polycarbonate phase, the morphology consists of PC-rich and SAN-rich domains with dispersed butadiene rubber particles. This phase structure places the alloy between high-flow ABS-rich grades and high-heat PC-rich grades. In practical molding terms, a 50:50 grade has lower melt viscosity than a 70:30 PC-rich grade and higher stiffness than an ABS-rich grade containing 30 wt% PC. Compared with unmodified ABS, the material offers higher heat deflection temperature but lower melt flow and higher drying sensitivity. Compared with unfilled polycarbonate, it offers lower melt viscosity and higher low-temperature impact retention but lower Vicat softening temperature. Compared with glass-filled PC/ABS, the unfilled 50:50 alloy gives more isotropic shrinkage and lower risk of glass-fiber read-through but lower flexural stiffness. The data in the following table are representative ranges for unfilled alloy classes and do not replace batch-specific certificates.
| Property | Test method | ABS-rich ~30 wt% PC | 5050-class ~50 wt% PC | PC-rich ~70 wt% PC |

| Notched Izod impact at 23 °C | ASTM D256-10 | 300–600 J/m | 500–800 J/m | 600–900 J/m |
| Notched Izod impact at −30 °C | ASTM D256-10 | 100–250 J/m | 200–400 J/m | 300–500 J/m |
The overlap in tensile yield and flexural modulus among adjacent blend ratios reflects the influence of ABS rubber particle size and polycarbonate molecular weight. For critical structural components, lot-by-lot melt flow rate measurement according to ISO 1133-1:2022 is used as a rheological consistency check; impact strength is additional control because melt flow rate alone does not capture rubber-phase degradation.
Thermal stability in unfilled PC/ABS is governed primarily by the butadiene phase and by hydrolysis of the polycarbonate chain. At nozzle temperatures above 280 °C, surface streaks from degraded rubber and melt-viscosity reduction from polycarbonate chain scission can occur within residence times as short as 2 min. The processing window is therefore narrower than that of PC-rich grades. A melt-temperature band of 245–270 °C is standard for 50:50 alloys; screw rotation speed on a 20–25:1 L/D general-purpose screw is limited to 40–80 min−1 to avoid excessive shear heating at the check ring.
Screw design should use a compression ratio between 2.2:1 and 2.8:1; lower compression ratios designed for polyolefins can produce unmelted butadiene gel particles. The shot size should be between 30% and 70% of barrel capacity. Barrel temperature profiles from feed to nozzle are typically 235 °C, 245 °C, 255 °C, and 260 °C, with a shut-off nozzle required for hot-runner systems. Back pressure is maintained at 0.5–1.0 MPa. Mold temperature below 60 °C creates high weld-line brittleness in thin bosses and snap features, while mold temperature above 90 °C increases cycle time and may not be required for unfilled material. If the resin is stored above 60% RH, drying time is extended to 4–6 h and the dryer dew point should remain below −30 °C.
On production-scale injection molding lines running 1,200–2,000 kN toggle-clamp machines, weld-line strength retention in 50:50 PC/ABS is a recurring issue in thin-wall housings because the low melt temperature required to protect the butadiene phase reduces intermolecular diffusion across flow fronts. Short shots and gas burn deposits are minimized by placing vent slots of 0.02–0.03 mm depth along the perimeter and by using valve-gated hot runners rather than open sprue bushing drops. For a 1.5 mm nominal wall housing, filling speeds are adjusted to keep flow-front velocity above 200 mm/s but below the velocity at which jetting initiates at the gate. Paint-free interior surfaces can be molded with low gloss and reduced visible sink near bosses when packing pressure is held at 60–80 MPa hydraulic pressure and gate freeze-off is confirmed by part weight stabilization. These process settings are starting points for a specific tool; cavity pressure measurement and short-shot study are required for process capability.
In automotive interior applications, 50:50 unfilled PC/ABS is selected for heater vents, trim substrates, and seat belt covers where ABS alone may exhibit excessive creep and unfilled PC alone may be too viscous for thin-wall filling. Volatile organic compound and fogging behavior must be verified on the molded part because emissions are influenced by processing temperature and residence time rather than resin composition alone. Molded specimens are tested according to VDA 270:2018 for odor and VDA 278:2011 for VOC/FOG; acceptance limits are set by the OEM and vary by application. A lot processed at the upper end of the recommended melt-temperature band for 4 min residence may show higher toluene-equivalent emissions than the same lot processed at 250 °C. This is an operational boundary, not a batch defect.
When a glass-filled PC/ABS grade is replaced to reduce anisotropic warpage, unfilled 5050-class material lowers flexural modulus and heat deflection under load. The absence of glass fiber eliminates fiber-orientation-induced shrink differentials, so flatness after demolding usually improves, but the trade-off is a reduction in tensile modulus from roughly 3,500–4,000 MPa for a 10% glass-filled grade to 2,200–2,500 MPa for unfilled 50:50 alloy. Thin-wall covers may require added ribs or an increase in nominal wall thickness from 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm to maintain flexural stiffness. The unfilled 50:50 grade also exhibits less glass-fiber read-through for paint-free parts. In applications requiring UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, an unfilled 50:50 base grade is not a direct substitute for a flame-retarded glass-filled product unless a halogen-free flame-retardant masterbatch is evaluated and validated on the final tool.
In incoming-resin control for Cixi Guozhiguang PC/ABS 5050, batch-to-batch variation in polycarbonate molecular weight and ABS rubber particle size can affect impact strength even when melt flow rate remains unchanged. The following compliance matrix is used for release decisions; product-specific certificates should be consulted for exact lot values.

| REACH SVHC concentration | EC 1907/2006 Article 33(1) | each SVHC < 0.1 wt% |

The flammability classification of the base grade should not be assumed from resin type. A molded part at a given wall thickness must be tested according to UL 94; a V-0 classification for a related flame-retarded grade does not transfer to this unfilled 50:50 product. Halogen content can be screened by combustion-ion chromatography according to EN 14582:2016 when REACH or RoHS documentation is incomplete.
For painted or bonded assemblies, adhesion of one-component and two-component polyurethane adhesives on 50:50 PC/ABS depends on surface energy and mold-release contamination. Isopropyl alcohol wiping followed by corona or plasma treatment is common to reach surface energy of 38–42 mN/m. Solvent-based cleaners containing ketones or aromatic hydrocarbons can stress-crack under molded-in stress. Assemblies should be tested according to ASTM D3763-18 for high-speed puncture rather than relying on plaque data.
Thermal debonding of the ABS phase may begin when nozzle melt temperature exceeds 285 °C for more than 2 min, producing dark streak contamination at the hot-runner gate and reduced notched Izod impact after molding. Hydrolytic degradation appears as silver streaking when residual moisture is above 0.02 wt%; the resulting surface defect cannot be corrected by raising mold temperature alone. Nozzle drool and stringing indicate excessive first-stage decompression or a worn check ring, not a formulation defect. Gate blush, delamination at weld lines, and brittle bosses at low mold temperatures are process-related failure modes documented on production equipment and should be resolved by adjusting screw back pressure to 0.5–1.0 MPa and holding mold temperature above 60 °C. Molding outside the 245–270 °C nozzle-temperature band without documented process validation should not be attempted for parts below 1.2 mm nominal wall thickness.
