Application of Cixi Guozhiguang ABS G10

In automotive interior trim injection moulding, drying is the first process control point for ABS G10. The resin is dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant dryer to a residual moisture content below 0.1 wt%. Failure to achieve this moisture level produces silver streaking and surface splay on Class A instrument panel surfaces. Injection moulding then proceeds with a melt temperature of 230–250 °C and a mould surface temperature of 40–70 °C. Barrel zone settings from rear to nozzle are commonly set at 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 240 °C. The holding pressure is maintained between 60 MPa and 100 MPa on machines with clamping force from 1,500 kN to 6,500 kN depending on projected area. Mould filling is sequenced using a cold runner with valve gates or sequential valve gating for large instrument panel surfaces. Fill times of 1.5–3.0 s are maintained for unfilled ABS. Typical mould shrinkage compensation for ABS injection grades is 0.4–0.7% along flow and 0.5–0.8% transverse to flow; verify gate-location-specific values with a flow simulation. Moulded parts are annealed at 80 °C for 1 h to reduce moulded-in stress before painting or laser marking. Flammability of passenger compartment materials is assessed under ISO 3795:1989, harmonised with FMVSS 302, with horizontal burning rate criteria referenced by national vehicle type-approval frameworks. For high-flow ABS injection grades, notched Charpy impact strength per ISO 179-1:2023 is generally reported between 12 kJ/m² and 20 kJ/m²; confirm lot-specific G10 values before design release. Vicat softening temperature is measured per ISO 306:2022 and is typically above 95 °C for unmodified ABS. Dimensional checks are performed after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH per ISO 291:2008. The use of 2–3 wt% carbon black masterbatch contributes to UV resistance and interior lightfastness. For unpainted parts, pigment dispersion is assessed by reflected-light microscopy at 50× magnification to detect surface particles larger than 5 µm. Terminal parts include dashboard trim panels, steering column shrouds, and door handle bezels.

Why do appliance enclosure specifications favour ABS over HIPS for thermal ballast?

Small appliance housings for vacuum cleaners, blender bases, and air purifier shells require impact resistance combined with heat deflection under intermittent motor load. The component is injection-moulded from ABS G10 with a melt temperature of 220–245 °C and a mould surface temperature of 50–70 °C. A screw with compression ratio of 2.5:1 to 3:1 and an L/D ratio of 20:1 is used. Injection velocity is set to 80–120 mm/s to avoid surface jetting and silver streaks on high-gloss appliance fronts. The sprue bush is sized for a 4–6 mm cold runner, and gate thickness is 60–75% of wall thickness to avoid premature gate freeze-off before packing completes. Hot runner manifold temperature is held at 230–250 °C. The finished housing must satisfy IEC 60335-1:2020 for accessible live parts, including creepage and clearance distance verification. Surface flammability is tested to UL 94; unmodified ABS grades typically achieve HB at 1.5 mm. For appliance parts in close proximity to current-carrying conductors, a glow-wire ignition temperature above 650 °C per IEC 60695-2-13:2021 may be required; ABS G10 without flame-retardant additives is unlikely to satisfy this threshold. Moulded-in stress is reduced by annealing for 30–60 min at 70–80 °C before final assembly. Screw bosses are designed with an outer diameter equal to 2.0–2.5× the nominal screw diameter and a hole depth not exceeding 1.5× the thread engagement length. Weld line strength can be checked by an impact test according to IEC 62262:2002 when the enclosure is specified for an IK code. Terminal parts include vacuum cleaner housings, blender bases, and air purifier front panels.

Electroplating of ABS components requires selective oxidation of the butadiene phase to create microscopic anchor sites for metal deposition. The etch bath for ABS typically contains chromic acid at 350–430 g/L and sulfuric acid at 180–400 g/L, operated at 60–70 °C for 5–15 min. Moulded parts are stress-relieved before etching at 70 °C for 2 h to reduce etchant-induced microcracking. After rinsing, the surface is activated with a palladium-tin colloid, then coated with electroless nickel or copper. Electrolytic copper, nickel, and chromium layers follow to meet decorative requirements specified in ASTM B604. Adhesion of the metal layer is measured by peel testing per ASTM B533; peel strength below the OEM lower control limit is rejected. The electroplating suitability of a specific ABS grade depends on butadiene content, particle size distribution, and moulded skin morphology. Published adhesion data for this exact G10 configuration is limited. Pilot trials should confirm etch uniformity and plate coverage on moulded parts before series production. Hexavalent chromium used in etch solutions is subject to authorisation under REACH Annex XIV; closed-loop bath regeneration and mist suppression are mandatory in EU production sites. Terminal parts include automotive badges, shower head rings, and faucet trim.

When ultrasonic welding is specified for ABS electronic enclosures

Electronic enclosures for routers, smart speakers, and computer peripherals are assembled without adhesives or snap-fit stress concentration. The amorphous nature of ABS supports ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz or 40 kHz with vibrational amplitude of 20–40 µm and weld time of 0.1–0.5 s. Joint design uses a shear joint with interference of 0.2–0.4 mm for rigid ABS parts. The interface temperature during welding approaches the glass transition region of the polymer but remains below the onset of thermal decomposition. The housing is injection-moulded with a melt temperature of 230–250 °C and a mould temperature of 40–60 °C. Cavity pressure at switchover is maintained between 40 MPa and 60 MPa. General tolerances follow ISO 2768-1 unless the OEM drawing specifies tighter limits; warpage is controlled by uniform wall thickness of 2.0–2.5 mm and edge gate placement at the part centre of mass. Restriction of hazardous substances compliance is verified by IEC 62321-5:2013 for lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium content. Electrostatic discharge requirements for electronics enclosures are met by adding 2–5 wt% conductive carbon black; surface resistivity is measured per IEC 61340-2-3:2016 and targeted below 106 Ω/sq. For unmodified ABS G10, surface resistivity is typically above 1012 Ω/sq. Terminal parts include router base housings, smart speaker enclosures, and computer mouse shells.

When ABS G10 components enter the toy market, the governing test is migration of specific elements under simulated gastric conditions. The material is compounded with colour masterbatch at a let-down ratio between 25:1 and 50:1 where pigment loading permits low shrinkage variation. Injection moulding is carried out at a reduced melt temperature of 210–230 °C to minimise degradation products from the butadiene phase. Mould surface temperature is held at 30–50 °C with inter-cavity uniformity within ±5 °C across multi-cavity tools to prevent plate-out. Cycle time is shortened because small toy parts reach ejection modulus quickly. Plate-out on the mould face is controlled by periodic purging with a high-viscosity ABS carrier containing 0.5 wt% of a non-amine purging compound. Migration testing is conducted per EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 using 0.07 M hydrochloric acid extraction for 2 h at 37 °C. Extractable element concentrations are quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry per ISO 11885:2007. The standard establishes separate limit values for brittle and non-brittle materials; laboratories report all 19 restricted elements. Small-part regulations under EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 restrict removable components for toy categories intended for children under 36 months. Terminal parts include building blocks, toy camera housings, and board game pieces.

Refrigerator door panels and 21 CFR 181.32 compliance

ABS G10 is specified for refrigerator door handles, dairy compartment flaps, and interior trim where impact resistance and chemical resistance to vegetable oil contact are required. Processing is by injection moulding at a melt temperature of 230–250 °C and a mould temperature of 50–60 °C. The resin is dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h. Mould surface temperature at the upper end of the range reduces moulded-in stress and improves environmental stress cracking resistance against oil and cleaning agents. The parts are used in indirect or occasional food contact. In the United States, ABS copolymers are evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 181.32 for acrylonitrile copolymers. Compliance is established by residual acrylonitrile monomer analysis using headspace gas chromatography and migration testing where intended conditions of use require. For export to the EU, the converter additionally verifies compliance with Regulation (EU) 10/2011 as applicable to plastic food-contact materials. Published food-contact compliance data for this exact Cixi Guozhiguang ABS G10 configuration is limited; the converter must obtain a lot-specific declaration from the resin supplier before use in import clearance. The deep-drawn inner liner shell of a refrigerator is generally not produced from this grade because blown-film and deep-draw thermoforming require higher melt strength; ABS G10 is confined to injection-moulded trim and handle components. Terminal parts include refrigerator door handles, dairy compartment lids, and shelf edge trims.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Cixi Guozhiguang ABS G10 is an opaque, pelletised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied for injection moulding and extrusion. The G10 suffix identifies a grade within the manufacturer's ABS product range and does not by itself constitute an ISO 1043 or ASTM D4000 classification. In the solid state, the material is a two-phase system consisting of a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix and dispersed polybutadiene-based rubber domains. Impact performance is governed by rubber particle size distribution, graft morphology, gel content, and matrix molecular weight. Published data for this exact designation is limited; the information below therefore provides representative property windows for unfilled medium-flow ABS grades and identifies the test methods and process limits used to evaluate supplier certificates of analysis.

Which Test Methods Govern ABS G10 Certificate of Analysis?

Specifications for this product class are normally reported under tensile, impact, thermal, and melt-flow standards. Representative values for unfilled medium-flow ABS injection grades are shown in Table 1. These values are not vendor-certified figures for Cixi Guozhiguang ABS G10 and must be checked against the commercial datasheet or certificate of analysis issued for the specific production lot.

The ranges above are drawn from industrial datasheets for general-purpose unfilled ABS injection grades. Direct comparison of impact results is valid only when specimen geometry, notch radius, conditioning, and test speed are identical. A Charpy notched result of 20 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA cannot be arithmetically converted to an Izod value under ASTM D256-10 without test-specific correlation data.

Moisture Sensitivity Limits Melt Processing Reliability

ABS is hygroscopic at processing temperatures and residual moisture must be controlled below 0.05 wt% to avoid surface splay, silver streaks, and reduction in tensile elongation. A dehumidifying hopper dryer with air dew point at or below -40 °C and drying temperature between 80 °C and 90 °C is required for virgin pellets. Residence time of 2–4 h is typical for sealed bags; in production areas with relative humidity above 60%, drying time should be extended to 4–6 h or the material should be conveyed in closed dry-air lines.

Melt temperature should remain within 210–250 °C. Barrel set points commonly rise from 200 °C in the feed zone to 240 °C at the metering zone. Melt temperatures above 270 °C or residence times beyond 5 min accelerate rubber-phase degradation, producing yellowing, acrid odour, and loss of notched impact. Mould temperature is held at 40–80 °C; higher settings improve knit-line strength and surface gloss but extend cooling time. On injection presses with clamp force between 800 kN and 1200 kN, starting parameters include injection pressure 70–140 MPa, hold pressure 50–80% of injection pressure, back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa, and screw rotation speed 40–80 rpm for screw diameters above 40 mm. Screw geometry with L/D of 20:1 and compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1 is standard for ABS; vented barrels are not recommended because the devolatilisation zone may reduce melt homogeneity and create vent flow. Hot-runner manifolds should be controlled at 220–250 °C with zone deviation alarms set to ±2 °C to prevent local overheating.

Tooling design for an ABS G10-type material uses mould shrinkage values between 0.4% and 0.7%. For initial cavity dimensions, a linear shrinkage of 0.5% is commonly adopted and adjusted from first-article measurements. Non-uniform wall thickness, gate location, and packing pressure affect shrinkage anisotropy; abrupt transitions from nominal wall sections to bosses or ribs can create sink marks if packing pressure is inadequate. For parts above 2.5 mm wall thickness, cycle time is controlled by cooling capacity and ejection temperature below the Vicat softening point. Ejector pin placement should avoid high-shrinkage areas and knit lines, where impact strength can be reduced by 20–50% relative to the bulk material.

Use of Cixi Guozhiguang ABS G10 is directed at indoor structural and appearance parts such as appliance front panels, electrical enclosure covers, vacuum cleaner housings, consumer electronics shells, and automotive interior trim. The service envelope is determined by heat deflection temperature and notched impact performance; continuous-use temperatures above 80 °C require dimensional and creep verification because the material approaches its heat deflection limit under load. Chemical resistance is acceptable against dilute acids, alkalis, and aqueous detergent solutions, but contact with ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, or aromatic solvents causes attack. Unmodified ABS is not suitable for long-term exterior exposure because ultraviolet radiation induces chalking and embrittlement; painting, electroplating, or acrylic/ASA cap layers are required for exterior parts. Unless a flame-retardant grade is specified, unfilled ABS is generally classified as UL 94 HB; converters requiring V-0 performance must select a compounded flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS. Regulatory statements such as RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH SVHC candidate-list compliance, FDA 21 CFR 177.1020, or EU Regulation 10/2011 must be obtained as grade-specific documentation from the supplier.

When Medium-Flow ABS Replaces HIPS or PC/ABS in Structural Housings

Selection of an ABS G10-type material relative to high-impact polystyrene or polycarbonate/ABS blends is controlled by impact, heat, chemical, and cost constraints. Against HIPS, ABS provides higher notched Izod impact, typically 150–350 J/m versus 60–150 J/m, and higher heat resistance under load, typically 85–105 °C versus 75–95 °C. ABS also shows better environmental stress cracking resistance to fatty oils and cleaning agents. Against PC/ABS, the ABS G10-type material has lower melt viscosity and lower raw-material cost, but it gives lower low-temperature ductility. Unfilled ABS typically undergoes a ductile-to-brittle transition between -20 °C and -10 °C, whereas PC/ABS retains high Izod values above 300 J/m at -30 °C. PC/ABS also displays heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa in the range 100–120 °C, extending service to applications that experience heat above 90 °C. The G10-type grade is therefore selected for indoor parts requiring better toughness than HIPS but not the low-temperature or high-heat performance of PC/ABS.

Within the ABS product family, G10 is differentiated from high-impact ABS grades by a lower rubber content or modified grafting that reduces melt viscosity while retaining sufficient impact for moderate abuse. High-impact ABS grades commonly show notched Izod above 300 J/m and melt flow rates below 15 g/10 min, which limits filling of long flow paths or thin walls below 1.2 mm. High-flow ABS grades may exceed 30 g/10 min but exhibit notched Izod below 150 J/m. The G10 designation is therefore positioned for medium-flow, medium-impact applications; the exact grade position is confirmed by the supplier's technical data sheet and certificate of analysis.

Batch-to-Batch Viscosity Control and Incoming Inspection

Production lots are controlled by melt mass-flow rate according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg, notched impact according to ASTM D256-10, and moisture analysis by Karl Fischer titration or ASTM D789. A shift in MFR greater than 3 g/10 min or a notched Izod change greater than 20% between lots can indicate molecular weight drift, rubber-phase variation, or additive inconsistency. On the moulding floor, such drift appears as short shots if MFR falls, flash if MFR rises, knit-line brittleness if impact falls, or altered cushion position at constant hold pressure. Capillary rheometry or in-line melt pressure measurement at fixed screw speed can separate viscosity changes from machine wear; a melt pressure drop of more than 10–15% at constant temperature and screw speed suggests a lower-viscosity lot or contamination.

The product should be stored in dry, sealed conditions below 30 °C and used within the supplier-defined shelf life. Re-drying is required after storage or after hopper residence beyond 6 h in humid environments. Material compatibility must be checked before blending with regrind or masterbatch; contamination with polyolefins or acetal can cause delamination and catastrophic impact loss in moulded parts.
