Application of CHIMEI Zhenjiang ABS PA-758K

In dry-environment electrical accessory manufacturing, CHIMEI Zhenjiang ABS PA-758K is processed into power strip housings, adaptor shells and switch fascia plates where UL 94 HB flammability classification at 1.5 mm is accepted for non-live parts. Pre-drying is performed in desiccant dryers with a dew point below -30 °C; pellets are conditioned at 80 °C for 2–4 h until residual moisture falls below 0.05 wt%. Moulding equipment comprises three-zone general-purpose screws with an L/D ratio between 20:1 and 25:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.8:1. Melt temperature is controlled between 220 °C and 240 °C; nozzle temperature is set 5–10 °C above the lower melt limit to prevent cold slug formation. Mould temperature is held at 45–70 °C for dimensional stability. Injection pressure is set at 70–120 MPa, with holding pressure equal to 60–80% of peak, and holding time is derived from gate freeze time observed via cavity pressure sensors rather than a nominal timer.

Regrind utilisation in this electrical enclosure segment is differentiated between visible and non-visible regions. Sprue and runner regrind is limited to 15 wt% for non-appearance surfaces and 5 wt% for surfaces requiring uniform colour, because multiple heat histories reduce notched Charpy impact values and shift yellowness index toward visible rejection. Screw back pressure is maintained at 0.6–1.5 MPa, and screw speed is limited to 40–80 rpm to avoid excessive shear heating. Mould deposit formation is controlled by using a chrome-plated or stainless steel mould surface and by venting the parting line at 0.01–0.03 mm. The grade is not a flame-retardant ABS; systems requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm under IEC 60695-11-10 must specify an FR grade. Parts are not used as primary electrical protection barriers and are limited to dry indoor environments below 70 °C continuous service.

When Mould Temperature Fluctuation Exceeds 5 °C in High-Gloss Control-Panel Moulding

Control-panel fascia moulding for washing machines and air conditioners imposes a narrow temperature window because PA-758K develops gloss banding when cavity temperature drifts beyond 5 °C across the part surface. On tools with SPI-A1 polished steel, the melt is delivered with a rear barrel zone of 190–200 °C, a mid zone of 210–220 °C, a front zone of 220–230 °C and a nozzle of 225–235 °C. Mould temperature is fixed at 65–75 °C and monitored with thermocouples embedded inside cavity inserts, not in the mould base. Hot runner systems are of valve-gate type with naturally balanced manifolds; pneumatic valve actuation is preferred to avoid hydraulic oil contamination of the valve stem. Gate diameter is calculated to sustain shear rate below 20,000 s-1 at the gate. Injection velocity is staged from 20–40 mm/s initial fill to 70–100 mm/s main fill, then reduced to 15–30 mm/s during pack to prevent jetting and gate blush. Weight-based colour masterbatch addition is 0.8–2.0 wt%; the carrier system must be PC-free to avoid surface clouding. Regrind is limited to 10 wt% and must be blended through an offline gravimetric blender to maintain melt flow index consistency. Weld lines are shifted to non-visible ribs by sequential valve gating.

End-use parts include air conditioner front covers, washing machine top panels and dishwasher control fascias. Dimensional inspection is performed after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C/50% RH according to ISO 291; warpage on a 300 mm free edge is held below 0.3 mm. The material is exposed to intermittent surface temperatures up to 65 °C; local contact with steam discharge or heating elements above 85 °C is not recommended unless the part geometry separates the polymer from the heat source. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 60335-1 for household appliance safety and RoHS 2011/65/EU. Surface gloss is measured at 60° geometry according to ISO 2813; a batch delta beyond 2 GU triggers investigation of hot runner temperature drift and regrind fraction. Paintability is acceptable only after cleaning with isopropanol and corona treatment, since silicone-based mould release contaminates free surface energy.

Because PA-758K maintains sufficient flow length in textured tools, automotive interior applications of the grade are confined to low-stress, low-visibility structural panels and audio faceplates rather than UV-stable Class A exterior trim. Parts such as radio bezels, HVAC control faces and lower console side trim are moulded in tools with SPI-B or fine leather-grain texture. Melt temperature is held at 230–250 °C; mould temperature is set to 50–70 °C. Injection velocity is staged from 20–40 mm/s initial fill to 60–100 mm/s main fill and 15–30 mm/s pack to prevent jetting at grain depths of 20–40 µm. Regrind is permissible at 15 wt% for non-visible brackets and is reduced to 5 wt% for low-gloss visible surfaces. If open-air storage exceeds 4 h at relative humidity above 60%, pellets are re-dried at 80 °C for 2 h.

No published VDA 278 VOC/SVOC or DIN 75201 fogging data for PA-758K were located in publicly available technical literature; therefore, cabin-air-quality approvals for OEM automotive programmes must be confirmed by the converter using authenticated retained samples. The grade is not suitable for direct long-term exposure above 85 °C or for load-bearing seat assemblies, airbag covers or exterior trim requiring SAE J1960 accelerated weathering. Dimensional stability of audio faceplates is checked after 48 h at 23 °C/50% RH; fit to metal sub-frames is controlled by designing clearance of 0.2–0.4 mm to accommodate thermal expansion.

What Restricts Regrind Addition in High-Gloss Small-Appliance Housings?

Regrind addition above 10 wt% in SPI-A1 polished moulds is usually restricted by a measurable increase in yellowness index and a reduction in notched impact strength after three heat histories. For small appliance housings such as electric kettle bases, handheld mixer bodies and vacuum cleaner motor covers, PA-758K is blended with clean runner regrind in closed-loop granulation systems. The feed is gravimetrically controlled to 10–20 wt% for non-appearance cores and 0–5 wt% for visible exterior surfaces. Drying before processing is 80 °C for 2–4 h; because these housings contain snap-fit undercuts and screw bosses, gate design must avoid weld lines at corners. Sequential valve gating with two or three drops is standard; gate pressure is maintained above 35 MPa until the part reaches dimensional freeze temperature. Moulding is carried out with clamping force of 350–500 t for tools with 8–16 cavities; screw back pressure is set to 0.5–1.0 MPa to homogenise colour without over-shearing the butadiene phase.

End-use articles include hair dryer body shells, electric kettle bases and vacuum cleaner motor covers. Flame classification is UL 94 HB at 2.0 mm, accepted under IEC 60335-1 for certain small appliances, while glowing wire performance should be confirmed to IEC 60695-2-11 for parts carrying current-carrying components. The material is not recommended for direct contact with boiling water or steam traps unless migration testing is performed. Surface quality control uses glossmeter readings at 60° geometry according to ISO 2813 and compares batches to a reference plaque conditioned under ISO 291; a delta of more than 2 GU triggers investigation of hot runner temperature drift and regrind fraction.

Rheologically, PA-758K permits high-speed filling of detailed multi-cavity tooling for toy block assemblies and hobby model components. Cycle time in 16- to 32-cavity moulds is governed by cooling time rather than injection filling time; cavity balance is held within 2% of shot weight using valve-gate hot runner tips or calibrated cold runner systems. Mould temperature is set to 40–55 °C, melt temperature to 210–230 °C, and back pressure to 0.4–0.8 MPa. Regrind inclusion in toy applications is limited to 5 wt% and only from an internally documented source because EN 71-3 migration limits for soluble heavy-metal fractions and REACH 1907/2006 SVHC obligations apply to the finished article, not to the raw polymer as supplied. The converter is responsible for verifying final article compliance to EN 71-1 mechanical/physical requirements, EN 71-2 flammability and EN 71-3 migration. End products include construction bricks, model kit frames and puzzle knobs; stacking features require dimensional tolerance of ±0.05 mm per 10 mm length.

Injection Velocity Profiling for Thin-Wall Electronics Enclosure Tools

On thin-wall enclosure tools with wall stock below 2.2 mm, PA-758K is processed with staged injection velocity to prevent shear-induced silver streaks and incomplete replication at bosses. Barrel profile is set to 195 °C rear, 215 °C centre, 225 °C front and 230 °C nozzle; mould surface is held at 50–65 °C. Maximum linear injection speed is held below 150 mm/s to avoid surface melt fracture; pressure-limited transfer at 95–98% fill volume permits packing without flash. Screw cushion is kept at 3–6 mm; decompression before screw recovery is set to 2–4 mm. Regrind from sprue and runner is 20–25 wt% for internal frames and 5–10 wt% for skin surfaces because brownish discoloration appears after four heat histories. The grade is used for printer side panels, monitor bezels, keyboard upper frames and calculator shells. Dimensional checks on 400 mm bezels follow ISO 291 standard atmosphere for 24 h before measurement; tolerances of 0.4 mm are typical along flow direction.

Compliance for these office automation articles is evaluated under IEC 62368-1 for IT equipment, UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and RoHS 2011/65/EU. The material should not be printed with solvent-based pad inks containing ketone solvents without first confirming stress-cracking resistance; adhesion and microcrack failures have been observed in high-stress corner regions of enclosure tooling when aggressive solvent blends penetrate the butadiene phase. Moulded-in labels and recesses are preferred over post-mould adhesive labels on surfaces subject to flexure, because localised solvent entrapment accelerates environmental stress cracking in ABS. Use of release sprays should be avoided in electronics housing tools due to silicone transfer that interferes with subsequent ultrasonic welding and pad printing; if release is unavoidable, only external release agents with documented non-interference for ultrasonic welding and pad printing should be considered after converter validation.

    More Introduction

CHIMEI Zhenjiang ABS PA-758K is an electroplating-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer produced at the Zhenjiang facility. The grade is supplied as natural pellets and is intended for injection-molded substrates that receive decorative copper-nickel-chromium electroplating. The specification is built around a controlled polybutadiene phase that generates anchor sites during oxidative etching, together with a reduced-migrating additive package that preserves catalyst adsorption after etching. Nominal density is 1.04–1.06 g/cm³ (ASTM D792-20); melt volume-flow rate is typically 13–22 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load (ISO 1133-1:2022). Lot-specific certificates of analysis from the manufacturer should govern final tool settings because melt-flow values are allowed to move within the commercial band.

The grade is used for automotive radiator grilles, wheel covers, exterior badges, mirror housings, plumbing trim, electrical appliance fascia, and cosmetic packaging closures. For these built parts, initial metal-to-substrate adhesion is evaluated by ASTM B533-16 after electroless copper or electroless nickel underlayer deposition; decorative plating lines typically specify an initial peel strength of at least 0.8 kN/m before thermal cycling. PA-758K is therefore positioned where chromium-plated appearance, low-cost rigid substrate, and repeatable etch adhesion are more important than continuous high-temperature load resistance.

What distinguishes an electroplating-grade ABS such as PA-758K from general-purpose ABS?

The difference is primarily morphological rather than simple comonomer ratio. General-purpose ABS may satisfy tensile and impact requirements but often contains mold-release waxes or low-level surface additives that migrate to the cavity wall and interfere with palladium-tin catalyst adsorption. PA-758K is formulated for low surface additive carryover, and its butadiene domain population is tuned to produce a high density of microscopic anchor sites after chromic-sulfuric acid etching. In typical plating-grade ABS, the polybutadiene phase mass fraction is controlled in the 10–20 wt% range, while the SAN matrix acrylonitrile content is typically 18–22 wt% to balance chemical resistance against flow. The etched cavities are generally in the sub-micron to 1.0 µm diameter range; after electroless copper deposition, peel adhesion is monitored by ASTM B533-16. General-purpose grades may exhibit lower cavity density after the same etch, yielding peel-strength values below 0.4 kN/m, whereas plating grades are expected to remain above 0.8 kN/m. Published data for this specific PA-758K morphology is limited outside the producer’s typical-property literature.

Compliance documentation for export typically includes REACH candidate-list screening under EC 1907/2006 and RoHS restrictions under Directive 2011/65/EU; the grade should be certified by the supplier for lot-level applications. For automotive electroplating, the material is commonly evaluated against manufacturer-specific decorative plating standards that reference ASTM B604-91 or equivalent coating performance classes. The resin itself does not carry a food-contact declaration unless explicitly specified; the electroplated surface, not the raw ABS, often defines the final article cleaning and skin-contact compliance.

Injection Molding Boundary Conditions for PA-758K Before Electroplating

Pre-drying is mandatory at high relative humidity because ABS picks up moisture during storage. A desiccant wheel dryer with a dew point of −30 °C or lower should be used. Drying at 80 ± 5 °C for 3–4 h reduces residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. At feed throat moisture above 0.08 wt%, hydrolysis of the terpolymer at melt temperatures produces splay and weakens molded impact strength. The melt should be processed at nozzle temperatures from 230 °C to 250 °C; sustained melt temperatures above 250 °C accelerate oxidation of the polybutadiene phase and create black specks or etch-resistant surface layers. Mold temperature is preferably held at 40–70 °C; lower mold temperature increases frozen-in orientation and can produce non-uniform etching in deep-draw parts.

Dried pellets exposed to relative humidity above 60% for more than 30 min may exceed 0.05 wt% moisture, especially in southern China or coastal sites, and should be dried again.

    Regrind addition≤20 wt%

On production-scale presses, cavity pressure at gate freeze for ABS decorative parts typically falls in the 30–50 MPa range, and clamp force sizing uses this pressure on the projected area. Hot runner manifold temperature is maintained at 230–250 °C; hot runner nozzle tips smaller than 1.5 mm diameter may impose shear rates above 10,000 s⁻¹ and should be avoided unless processing trials confirm stable etch response. A reciprocating screw with an L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio of 2.5:1–3.0:1 is standard for these materials.

In multi-cavity automotive emblem and wheel cover tools, cavity imbalance is a more frequent cause of etching variability than raw polymer variation. Parts molded farthest from the sprue show higher residual orientation if the holding pressure profile is excessive; production trials reduce holding pressure from gate freeze to 50–60% of peak cavity pressure and extend mold temperature recovery. Direct replacement of general-purpose ABS with PA-758K without such process adjustments can mask the adhesion benefit of the plating grade.

After molding, parts may be annealed at 80–100 °C for 2–4 h in forced-air ovens to relax orientation before chemical etching. The etching bath is generally a mixed chromic-sulfuric acid solution: chromic acid 350–450 g/L and sulfuric acid 350–450 g/L at 60–70 °C, with immersion from 5 min to 15 min. The etchant selectively oxidizes surface-exposed polybutadiene domains to create micro-roughness. Under-etching leaves insufficient anchor sites and reduces initial peel strength below 0.8 kN/m in the ASTM B533-16 test; over-etching widens surface craters and increases adhesion scatter. The subsequent activation sequence uses palladium-tin colloidal baths, electroless copper or nickel deposition, and then conventional decorative electrolytic copper/nickel/chromium layers. Resin choice affects the first and second stages more than the final chromium topcoat.

Differences between PA-758K and high-heat ABS are observed in thermal properties and thermal cycling. High-heat ABS may exceed 105 °C heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa (ISO 75-2/A), while PA-758K typically remains below 100 °C. In electroplating, this lower heat resistance is acceptable because the formed metal shell and the plastic substrate are subjected to bake temperatures below 100 °C; higher bake schedules can induce blistering. Compared with PC/ABS, PA-758K provides better chromic acid etching response and lower melt processing cost, but lower impact and heat resistance after long-term aging. For applications where large thin-wall parts require stable electroplated surfaces, PA-758K provides a narrower adhesion distribution across multi-cavity tools than general-purpose ABS, as measured by ASTM B533-16 peel-strength scatter.

When thermal degradation appears as splay, black specks, or etch-resistant skin layers

Operators on injection lines observe splay when the dried pellet moisture limit is exceeded. Above 0.08 wt% residual moisture, volatiles generated during melt processing are visible as silver streaks and reduce impact resistance. Black specks are most often carbonized SAN or oxidized polybutadiene from barrel residence time beyond 10 min at melt temperatures above 250 °C. Etch-resistant skin layers are generated when high shear at small gates or hot runner tips temporarily raises surface temperature above 260 °C, causing localized crosslinking or additive degradation. The corrective action is to lower rear-zone temperature to 210–220 °C, maintain the nozzle at 245–250 °C, and increase gate land area rather than raising barrel temperature. Contaminated regrind from general-purpose ABS containing mold release may require only 5 wt% to reduce plating adhesion; therefore, dedicated material handling, hopper magnets, and segregation from other ABS grades are required. Avoid blending amine-based additive masterbatches, because amines can interfere with acidic etch baths and catalyst adsorption.

In selection, PA-758K is not a heat-resistant product and is not recommended for underhood components or service above 100 °C under load. The grade is specified for decorative plated parts where initial peel adhesion, surface reproducibility, and cost-controlled impact resistance are the primary acceptance criteria. Compared with unplated general-purpose ABS, the product accepts the oxidative etch cycle with lower blister occurrence and higher adhesion uniformity in production tools. Compared with high-heat ABS or PC/ABS, it sacrifices upper-temperature load resistance but reduces the cost of the electroplated substrate. These boundaries define the material’s operational window for automotive, sanitary, appliance, and consumer decorative applications.
