A pre-dried, moisture-controlled feedstock of Chimei Zhenjiang PA-747K enters the appliance-housing workflow under desiccant drying at 80 °C to 90 °C for 3–4 h, targeting residual moisture below 0.05 wt% because hydrolysis in the barrel lowers molecular weight near the gate and produces silver streaking on polished cavity surfaces. For vacuum cleaner canisters and washing machine control bezels, melt temperature is held between 200 °C and 230 °C, while mold temperature is controlled from 40 °C to 60 °C to balance surface gloss against cycle time. High-polish tooling requires better than SPI A-2 finish and ejection draft angles of 0.5° to 1.0° on textured surfaces; insufficient draft increases ejection microcracking near bosses. A standard feed blend uses up to 20 wt% clean in-house regrind and 1–2 wt% ABS-carrier color masterbatch, while external mold releases are excluded because they transfer to the part and interfere with subsequent pad printing or laser etching. The injection profile operates at 60–80 MPa hydraulic pressure with fill times of 1.0–1.5 s for a 2.0 mm nominal wall, followed by holding pressure at 50–65% of peak until gate freeze at approximately 6–9 s. Screw decompression after plastication is set to 3–5 mm to prevent nozzle drool, and a melt cushion of 2–4 mm is maintained for shot-weight consistency. Hot-runner systems require thermal gating with tip temperatures no higher than 240 °C to prevent yellowing when cycle interruptions exceed 10 min. Compliance under IEC 60335-1 is end-product-dependent because the resin itself rarely carries an appliance-specific approval; molded enclosures are evaluated for glow-wire ignition at temperatures selected by the end-product clause, commonly 650 °C or 750 °C depending on current-carrying proximity. Incoming lot validation includes tensile yield strength per ISO 527-1/2 and notched Izod impact per ISO 180. Terminal parts include floor-care body shells, control panel frames, and small kitchen appliance bases where UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm is acceptable.
Large flat copier platen covers and printer top lids molded from PA-747K develop differential shrinkage between the flow front and the gate, which manifests as warp or edge lift after demolding. To limit this, production tools use sequential valve-gate systems with two to four drops arranged along the long axis of the part; each valve opens after the previous melt front has traveled approximately 40–60% of the flow length. This sequence reduces weld-line depth and avoids the pressure spike associated with single-end filling. Cooling circuits are divided into two independent zones: the gate side is held at 50 °C and the far side at 35 °C, creating a controlled temperature differential that counters concave bowing. Post-mold fixturing in ambient air for 15–20 min is applied to covers with wall thickness below 2.0 mm until dimensional stability meets a flatness tolerance of 0.4 mm over a 300 mm span, checked per ISO 1101. Feedstock for office automation housings is dried to 0.03 wt% moisture and mixed with 10–15 wt% regrind from the same color lot; higher regrind fractions increase the coefficient of linear thermal expansion mismatch and create visible knit lines after painting. Mold release is limited to 0.2–0.3 wt% internal silicone-free fatty acid ester to avoid defects in subsequent UV-cured clear coat. Barrel temperatures from feed to nozzle follow a flat profile of 220 °C to 235 °C, with screw backpressure held at 0.5–1.0 MPa to maintain melt density without excessive frictional heat. Clamp tonnage for a 450 mm × 350 mm cover is selected from a projected area multiplier of 3.0–4.0 MPa, but flash at parting lines is more effectively controlled by confirming tool deflection is under 0.05 mm at full injection pressure. Wall-thickness transitions are limited to a 3:1 ratio with 0.5° chamfered transition zones to avoid hesitation lines. Terminal products include scanner lids, copier paper trays, and printer carriage covers evaluated to IEC 62368-1 and to UL 94 HB at the minimum housing thickness.
In toy and juvenile-product molding, PA-747K is constrained less by heat distortion than by migration compliance. Toy vehicle bodies and doll furniture components molded from PA-747K fall under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 migration limits for 19 elements, and the colorant package must be selected from pigments that do not release antimony, chromium, lead, or barium above the standard’s category-specific limits. Precolored ABS masterbatch is metered at 1–3 wt%, but each masterbatch carrier must be the same ABS type to prevent delamination at gate vestiges. Regrind for toys is restricted to 10 wt% maximum from the same shade and controlled by lot traceability; cross-contamination from recycled post-consumer ABS is unacceptable under REACH Annex XVII entries restricting phthalates and under the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. Processing for toy parts uses a lower melt temperature of 190 °C to 210 °C and a screw with 20:1 L/D and compression ratio of 2.0–2.3:1 to prevent heat-history yellowness. Mold temperature is kept at 30–45 °C to reduce sink marks on small decorative surfaces, but lower mold temperatures reduce notched Izod impact values measured to ISO 180; a minimum of 8 kJ/m² at 23 °C is commonly specified for drop-tested play items. Gate locations are placed behind snap-fit ribs rather than on visible faces because ABS jetting produces visible blush on high-gloss surfaces. Ejector sleeves on hollow toy wheels require venting slots of 0.01–0.02 mm depth to eliminate gas burns. Terminal parts include toy vehicle bodies, dollhouse furniture frames, and construction toy accessory clips; silicone-free external mold release may be used only when parts are subsequently washed in isopropyl alcohol. Optical gloss is checked to ISO 2813 at 60° geometry on a flat reference plaque, with a minimum gloss of 85 GU for display surfaces.
For display bezels and router enclosure tooling where dimensional tolerance is held to ±0.05 mm across a 250 mm feature length, PA-747K demands stable melt residence time and compensated mold steel expansion. The resin is dried to 0.04 wt% moisture and injected through valve-gated hot runners with manifold temperatures of 230 °C to 245 °C. Injection velocity is profiled as 40–60 mm/s at the gate, rising to 80–100 mm/s in the main cavity, then reduced to 30 mm/s for the final 10% of fill to prevent gas-trap burn at weld lines. Vents are ground to 0.02–0.03 mm depth along the flow path; insufficient venting leads to short shots at thin snap features and increases ejected part temperature. For ICT equipment housings requiring static dissipation, 0.5–1.5 wt% of a non-migrating antistatic additive may be compounded, but the resulting melt viscosity shift must be measured by ISO 1133-1 at 220 °C/10 kg. Compliance is assessed under IEC 62368-1:2023 for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment, while flame resistance is evaluated by UL 94 at the lowest wall thickness, typically 1.5 mm. If the end product contains circuits capable of delivering more than 15 W in a limited power source, the enclosure may require a class higher than HB, and unfilled PA-747K alone will not meet V-0 without an FR modification. Recycled ABS in networking device housings should be capped at 15 wt% because variations in blend composition shift heat deflection temperature measured according to ISO 75-2/A by up to 2–3 °C. Terminal parts include monitor rear frames, router base housings, and set-top box covers.

Non-structural interior trim parts such as speaker grille frames and gear lever surround bases are molded from PA-747K when a high-gloss painted finish is required. The resin is dried to 0.04 wt% moisture and processed at a melt temperature of 230 °C to 240 °C, with a mold temperature of 50 °C to 70 °C to reduce frozen-in stress and improve surface energy before painting. After molding, parts are allowed to degas for 24–48 h at 40 °C before flame or plasma treatment raises surface energy from the typical ABS value of 34–36 mN/m to at least 44 mN/m; panel tests with dyne pens generally target 44–46 mN/m for solvent-borne primer adhesion. For interior horizontal or vertical surfaces, flammability is evaluated to ISO 3795, where the burn rate must not exceed 100 mm/min; PA-747K in its natural high-gloss state generally falls within this boundary when thickness is above 1.5 mm, but molded-in textile or foam lamination changes the system classification. Volatile organic compound emissions are not grade-specific alone and must be verified by VDA 278 or VDA 277 on the finished painted assembly. Formulation for automotive trim uses 0.3–0.5 wt% internal mold release and a maximum of 15 wt% same-color regrind; non-ABS contaminants such as PC or HIPS dust create micro-delamination that becomes visible only after painting. Gate locations are placed on non-visible B-side bosses, and tunnel gates are preferred to tab gates to reduce vestige protrusion. Weld lines on speaker grille patterns are moved to rib intersections by flow leader adjustments; a weld-line strength above 60% of the parent material’s flexural strength to ISO 178 is typical. Terminal parts include loudspeaker grille frames, door panel switch bezel substrates, and gear shift surround carriers. Direct long-term UV exposure is outside the operational envelope unless a UV-stable coating is applied, because unmodified ABS exhibits gloss loss and chalking after accelerated weathering.
Clamshell halves for battery-powered screwdrivers, chargers, and garden tools are injection molded from PA-747K when the product mass is below 0.8 kg and the drop-test energy is under 1.0 J from a height of 1.0 m at 23 °C. At -20 °C, impact performance of unmodified ABS falls, so low-temperature tool housings may require blending with 10–20 wt% polycarbonate; published data for the resulting PA-747K/PC blend is configuration-dependent and must be validated by ISO 180 notched Izod tests. The neat resin is dried to 0.04 wt% moisture, and barrel temperatures are set between 210 °C and 235 °C with a short screw of 22:1 L/D to limit shear heating. Mold surfaces are textured to VDI 27–33 to hide flow marks, and mold temperature is held at 40–60 °C. For two-piece clamshells, the parting line is designed with a 0.02–0.05 mm offset in the shutoff to maintain consistent wall thickness and prevent flash at the hinge. Bosses receiving self-tapping screws require nominal wall thickness of 2.0–2.2 mm and a boss outer diameter of 2.0–2.5 times the screw diameter, with a rib-to-wall ratio below 60% to avoid sink marks. Compliance under IEC 62841-1 includes mechanical strength, moisture resistance, and abnormal operation tests; the housing is also evaluated for UL 94 HB or higher depending on switch and battery energy. A maximum of 15 wt% clean regrind is allowed only when notched Izod impact to ISO 180 at 23 °C remains above 15 kJ/m²; regrind from painted or metallized parts is rejected. Terminal parts include charger base housings, inspection lamp bodies, and light-duty garden tool handle shells.

CHIMEI Zhenjiang ABS PA-747K is a high-impact acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer produced at the Zhenjiang polymerisation and compounding line and supplied in pellet form for injection moulding and selected extrusion operations. The material is defined by a controlled melt-flow window, a rubber-phase morphology engineered for notched impact resistance, and a processing envelope that separates it from general-purpose ABS, high-flow ABS, and low-impact styrenic grades. In plant audits, the grade is identified by lot certificate against melt volume-flow index under ISO 1133-1:2022, density under ISO 1183-1:2019, notched Izod impact under ISO 180/1A:2023, and heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2:2020.
Published typical values should be read as lot-sensitive specifications, not absolute release limits. Representative natural-grade data place melt volume-flow index in the 3.5–6.5 cm³/10 min band at 220 °C/10 kg, tensile yield stress between 35 MPa and 43 MPa under ISO 527-2, flexural modulus between 1.9 GPa and 2.2 GPa under ISO 178:2019, and notched Izod impact between 28 kJ/m² and 40 kJ/m² at 23 °C for 4 mm specimens. At −30 °C, notched impact generally remains above 10 kJ/m², but colour concentrates, regrind content, and pigment dispersion can reduce this by 10–25%. Heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa is commonly observed between 80 °C and 88 °C, and density is reported near 1.03 g/cm³. These values support material selection; incoming-lot verification should use the producer’s certificate of analysis rather than brochure values.
Table 1 identifies the test matrix employed for incoming-lot verification and process audit. The conditions are drawn from current technical bulletins and are common to ISO-based ABS release certificates.

Moisture control is the first processing constraint. Desiccant-bed drying at 80 ± 5 °C for 3–4 h with a return-air dew point below −30 °C lowers residual surface and internal moisture to less than 0.02 wt%. If pellets are exposed to plant air above 60% relative humidity for more than 2 h, re-drying is required because ABS absorbs atmospheric moisture rapidly enough to produce splay, flow lines, and loss of notched impact at the part surface. Drying hoppers should be sized so that residence time does not exceed 6 h at temperature; longer residence at 80 °C can oxidise the butadiene phase and shift colour toward yellow.
Barrel temperature profiles on a general-purpose injection moulding machine with 20:1–24:1 L/D screw and compression ratio between 2.2:1 and 2.8:1 are typically set from 200 °C in the rear zone to 230 °C at the nozzle. Melt temperatures above 250 °C degrade the rubber phase; a shift in mass-flow rate from the nozzle and surface bloom are field indicators of unacceptable residence time. Screw back pressure is held between 5 bar and 10 bar to homogenise additives without excessive shear heating. Injection speed is set by cavity-fill time, usually 0.3–1.5 s for wall stocks 2–3 mm; velocity-controlled filling reduces jetting at gates and improves weld-line strength in PA-747K.
Mould temperatures between 40 °C and 70 °C are used, with the narrower 50–60 °C band preferred for high-gloss surfaces and for weld-line-limited bosses. Clamp force is based on projected area; a setting of 0.35–0.50 t/cm² is common for technical parts with 25–40 MPa peak cavity pressure. For thin-wall sections below 2.5 mm, packing pressure in the 60–90 MPa hydraulic range may be needed to avoid sink marks, while gas counterpressure or vacuum venting is used in tools with poor venting at the end of fill.
| Processing parameter | Control range |
|---|---|
| Desiccant drying temperature | 80 ± 5 °C |
| Residual moisture | < 0.02 wt% |
| Melt temperature | 210–240 °C |
| Mould temperature | 40–70 °C |
| Screw back pressure | 5–10 bar |
| Packing pressure | 60–90 MPa |
| Clamp force per projected area | 0.35–0.50 t/cm² |
The principal difference is morphological. PA-747K is formulated with higher butadiene content and a broader rubber-particle size distribution than general-purpose grades such as CHIMEI PA-707. The rubber phase induces cavitation and shear yielding at the crack tip, raising room-temperature notched Izod values into the 28–40 kJ/m² range. In contrast, low-impact general-purpose ABS grades often fall below 20 kJ/m² at the same notch geometry. The same rubber phase, however, lowers modulus and increases melt elasticity; flow paths through long, thin sections are shorter than those of PA-707 at equal barrel settings.
Compared with CHIMEI PA-717C, a high-impact general-purpose ABS, PA-747K is positioned for higher melt fluidity under 220 °C/10 kg, which supports faster injection and reduced cycle time in multi-cavity tools. Compared with high-flow grades such as CHIMEI PA-756, PA-747K gives up some spiral-flow length under 2 mm wall stock but retains greater impact resistance at weld lines, bosses, and snap-fit features. These trade-offs make PA-747K more suitable for appliance housings and power-tool bodies than for ultra-thin high-flow electronic parts that require long flow from a single edge gate.
Against PA-707, PA-747K trades tensile yield and surface hardness for impact. The tensile yield stress of PA-707 is commonly higher by 5–10%, and its melt flow is often lower or comparable depending on the exact grade. For snap-fit hooks, PA-707 may be too brittle when notched at the base; PA-747K tolerates the sharp moulded notch better, but the lower stiffness means the hook must be thicker to meet the same deflection force. This substitution should be confirmed by finite element simulation using measured stress-strain data from ISO 527-2 specimens, not by tabulated single-point properties.
Weld-line performance in PA-747K is strongly affected by melt temperature and vent location. In a two-gate tensile bar, a weld line reduces notched Izod impact to 40–60% of the bulk value when melt temperature is at the low end of the range. Increasing melt temperature to 230–240 °C and slowing injection so that the two flow fronts meet at a higher temperature restores some, but not all, of the impact loss. This behaviour differs from high-flow grades that fill more easily but may exhibit lower weld-line strength at equal mould temperature.
Regrind limits are important because butadiene-phase oxidation is cumulative. In production-scale closed-loop systems, 20 wt% regrind can be tolerated in dark-colour housings when the regrind was produced from properly dried pellets and was not exposed to multiple high-temperature histories. For light colours, the limit is often lowered to 10 wt% because oxidation by-products shift colour and reduce low-temperature impact. The glass transition temperature of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase is not significantly altered at these regrind levels, but low-temperature ductility is more sensitive than modulus.
Gate-freeze misconfiguration is a critical processing defect because it decouples the pack phase from the cavity before shrinkage compensation is complete. The result is an internal void or sink mark opposite ribs and bosses, even when the cavity was fully filled. For PA-747K in a 2.5 mm wall with a 40 °C mould, gate-seal time may be 3–6 s but can vary by 0.5–2 s across cavities because of hot-runner temperature distribution and nozzle contact force. Cavity-pressure instrumentation should be used to keep hold time above the gate-seal point rather than relying on a single global hold timer.
In multi-cavity tooling, lot-to-lot viscosity variation within the specified melt-flow band alters filling balance. A lot near the low-flow end of 3.5 cm³/10 min requires higher transfer pressure or a 5–10 °C increase in melt temperature to maintain identical flow-front velocity; otherwise the farthest cavity shows underpacking, weld-line porosity, and a reduction in notched Izod at the weld of 10–20%. Maintaining a melt cushion of 3–5 mm, screw back pressure of 5–10 bar, and recovery speed below 0.25 m/s keeps shot-to-shot variation below 0.5% in production audits.
Tooling design for PA-747K should place gates in regions of low stress concentration and should avoid direct cold slugs into blind ribs. In production-scale mould trials on an 80 mm × 160 mm × 2.5 mm plaque tool with a central fan gate, the cavity-pressure trace shows a distinct pack-hump when the hold pressure is correctly transferred; if the transfer point is delayed until the cavity is 95–100% filled, momentary pressure spikes above 80 MPa may cause flash at the parting line. Weld lines in PA-747K are less tolerant of low melt temperature than those in high-flow grades; raising melt temperature by 5–10 °C and mould temperature by 10 °C at the weld position improves molecular diffusion across the melt front, raising weld-line notched Izod values closer to bulk material.
On regulatory exposure, CHIMEI Zhenjiang ABS PA-747K is formulated without intentional addition of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, or polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and is normally supplied under EU RoHS 2011/65/EU as amended. REACH SVHC status is documented in the producer’s safety data sheet and EU REACH registration dossier; converters should confirm lot-level SVHC content when EU REACH Article 33 communication obligations apply. The grade is not marketed as a food-contact or medical resin, so finished-article compliance under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 or EU 10/2011 must be demonstrated by the converter with the specific colourant and processing aid package. Halogen-free claims require combustion ion chromatography; trace chlorine or bromine from additives can exceed 900 ppm even when no halogenated flame retardant is used.
For UV-exposed service, unfilled ABS degrades by photo-oxidation at unsaturated butadiene sites. PA-747K is not a weatherable grade; parts intended for outdoor use or continuous exposure to sunlight should be painted, metallised, or replaced with ASA/AES grades when accelerated ageing under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 exceeds 800 h without surface cracks. The material also should not be processed with hot-runner tips or barrel zones above 250 °C for extended residence, because decomposition products can corrode vent channels and deposit plate-out that blocks gas escape at the end of fill.
Applications documented in industrial specifications include vacuum-cleaner housings, power-tool clamshells, small appliance bodies, luggage shells, children’s toys, and motorcycle helmet outer shells. For each, the design review verifies notched Izod at local wall thicknesses below 2.5 mm, gate location relative to ribs, and maximum service temperature under load. Where a snap-fit arm is gated directly, PA-747K can tolerate the high local shear rate only if the gate is wider than 0.8 mm and the mould is run at the upper end of the recommended temperature band. Published data for the exact snap-fit geometry is limited; tool trials are required.
