Application of Chimei KIBISAN SAN PN-118L100

High-cavitation injection molding of transparent cosmetic packaging components constitutes one primary downstream conversion route for Chimei KIBISAN SAN PN-118L100 because the grade’s melt-flow position under ISO 1133-1:2022 permits filling of multi-cavity closures without excessive injection pressure while retaining the low haze required for prestige-level packages. Tooling for this segment is typically built from P20 or S136 hardened stainless steel with diamond-polished A1 surfaces; on 24- to 32-cavity cold-runner or hot-runner molds, surface roughness below 0.025 μm Ra combined with mold temperatures of 50–70°C minimizes flow-front haze and eliminates post-mold polishing. Pre-drying at 80°C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30°C is imposed when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%; residual moisture above 0.05 wt% creates splay on transparent cap threads and thin-walled jar bodies, and on production lines running 12–18 s cycles this defect is not recoverable by recutting or annealing. Barrel temperatures are profiled from 200°C at the rear zone to 240°C at the nozzle, with actual melt temperature held at 220–235°C; screw back pressure is set between 5 bar and 10 bar to avoid shear-induced molecular degradation in the SAN chain, and screw L/D ratio is normally 20:1–24:1 with a compression ratio of 2.0–2.5:1. A formulation addition of 1.0–2.0 wt% transparent masterbatch on a SAN carrier with an acrylonitrile content of 24–28 wt% is used for tinting; the masterbatch carrier melt-flow rate must be within ±10 cm³/10 min of the base resin under the same ISO 1133-1:2022 condition to prevent visible flow streaks. Siloxane-based internal mold release is limited to 0.1–0.3 wt%; loadings higher than 0.5 wt% deposit on cavity surfaces and force cleaning after 8–12 h of continuous production with a corresponding increase in downtime. Regulatory requirements are governed by REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006; finished cosmetic packaging that is also an integral closure system falls under the technical documentation of EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 where applicable, and material declarations follow IEC 62474. Chemical resistance screening under ASTM D543-20 is required before contact with representative cosmetic matrices; undiluted ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons must be excluded from the use window because SAN grades in this melt-flow class develop environmental stress cracking under continuous stress. End products include airless pump overcaps, transparent outer jars, compact powder cases, and closure bodies.

Does PN-118L100 Maintain Optical Stability in Household Appliance Display Windows?

In household appliance display windows, the dominant processing risk is not short-shot but optical haze induced by thermal residence and by sink marks over internal ribs. On production equipment ranging from 120 to 350 metric tons clamping force, PN-118L100 is molded into flat display lenses with wall thickness between 1.8 mm and 3.5 mm; rib-to-wall thickness ratio is held at or below 0.6, and the pack/hold pressure is set between 35 MPa and 55 MPa for 3–6 s to reduce the sink depth below 0.005 mm over ribs. A formulation addition of 0.1–0.3 wt% phosphite antioxidant is used where melt residence time can reach 10 min in hot-runner manifolds; tint masterbatch addition is 0.5–1.5 wt% for brand-specific neutral gray or blue-tinted windows, and the masterbatch carrier should match the base resin acrylonitrile range to avoid delamination inside the display area. Barrel temperature profile is 190–230°C from feed to nozzle, mold temperature 60–80°C, and injection speed is set moderate to prevent jetting at the edge gate; a visible gate blush can be reduced by a fan gate with a land length of 0.8–1.2 mm. Batch-to-batch melt-flow variation is monitored by cushion position and transfer pressure on the injection unit; a drift larger than 3 mm in cushion length across 50 consecutive cycles typically indicates a lot change or moisture uptake and requires recalibration of the shot size. Regulatory compliance for household appliance windows is evaluated under IEC 60335-1:2020 for general safety, UL 94 HB at the minimum molded thickness, and IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire testing when the window is positioned near current-carrying parts. Optical transmission is verified under ASTM D1003-21, and yellowness index under ASTM E313-20 is kept below 2.0 after 500 h at 70°C internal air temperature for air-conditioner display lenses; published data for this specific grade under higher continuous operating temperatures is limited, so forced-air validation is required. End products include washing machine control panel windows, air-conditioner display lenses, dishwasher status windows, and vacuum cleaner sight windows.

Transparent disposable diagnostic components are molded from PN-118L100 only when the finished device manufacturer completes lot-specific biological evaluation because the resin supplier’s certification does not replace device-level testing under ISO 10993-1:2018. The conversion environment is a controlled cleanroom at ISO 14644-1:2015 Class 8 or better, and electric injection molding machines of 50–150 metric tons clamping force are configured with stainless steel plasticizing barrels and chrome-plated screws to prevent rust contamination. The formulation for optical cuvettes and microplate covers excludes external mold releases; 0.05–0.10 wt% of a high-purity internal lubricant is the maximum addition level that preserves the low particulate burden and low light-scattering background required for spectrophotometric reading at wavelengths down to 340 nm. Melt temperature is kept at the lower end of the processing window, 210–225°C, and mold temperature is maintained at 40–60°C to shorten cooling time while avoiding visible haze; cold runners are preferred over hot runners where residence time cannot be kept below 5 min. A notch-free de-gating system using tab gates or tunnel gates is employed to avoid particulate generation from robotic sprue cutting. Compliance for non-implantable diagnostic disposables includes ISO 10993-5:2009 cytotoxicity testing and ISO 10993-10:2010 irritation testing on the finished device; if the device is marketed for clinical laboratory use, the manufacturer may also apply IVDR (EU) 2017/746 risk classification. Sterilization compatibility must be validated by the device manufacturer; published data for PN-118L100 under gamma sterilization at 25 kGy is limited, and electron-beam or ethylene oxide cycles generally produce less optical yellowing than gamma irradiation, but the final choice depends on bioburden and packaging. End products include spectrophotometer cuvettes, petri dish lids, specimen transfer cups, and microplate covers.

Food-Contact Blender Jar Molding and Residual Acrylonitrile Control

Food-contact appliance components such as blender jars, food processor bowls, and coffee grinder containers are converted from PN-118L100 under compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1040 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. The formulation uses 100 parts by weight of virgin PN-118L100; color concentrates are added at 0.5–1.5 wt% and must use carriers approved for food contact with the same monomer basis, with pigments selected from the applicable positive lists of EU 10/2011/EC and 21 CFR 178.3297 where relevant. Thick-wall injection molding of blender jars with wall sections from 2.5 mm to 6.0 mm requires a two-stage injection speed profile: the first stage fills the base and side walls at 30–60 mm/s, and the second stage reduces velocity at the rim to prevent gas entrapment at the last-filled area. Mold temperature is held at 50–80°C; mold temperatures below 50°C produce internal voids and visible knit lines at the bottom gate, while mold temperatures above 85°C extend cycle time without measurable improvement in food-contact migration behavior. Clamping force is selected from 300 to 800 metric tons according to the projected area of the jar, and pack pressure is maintained at 40–70 MPa for 8–15 s to compensate volumetric shrinkage. Hot-runner valve gates are used for multi-cavity bowls, but the manifold must be purged at material or color change because SAN residence at 230°C above 15 min leads to yellowing and an increase in residual low-molecular-weight species. Food-contact compliance testing on the finished article includes overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² under EU 10/2011/EC and residual acrylonitrile monomer below the specific migration limit applicable to the food type; for fatty foods and high-temperature applications, additional testing under EU 10/2011 food simulants is required because SAN is not an absolute barrier. End products include transparent blender jars, food processor bowl assemblies, coffee grinder containers, and reusable kitchen storage containers.

When Transparent Electronics Covers Require UL 94 HB and IEC 62368-1 Compliance

Transparent covers and light-transmissive panels for consumer electronics are considered a viable conversion for PN-118L100 when the application does not require the higher heat deflection temperature and higher impact of polycarbonate. Thin-wall molding of sections between 1.0 mm and 1.8 mm is performed on accumulator-assisted injection machines with high injection velocity of 100–180 mm/s, because the fast solidification of the SAN melt front at lower mold temperatures causes flow marks and excessive orientation. Mold temperature is controlled at 60–75°C; when the cavity surface drops below 50°C, stress birefringence appears around the gate land and ejector pins, which is quantifiable under ASTM D4093-95 as photoelastic retardation and is unacceptable in display bezels. The formulation includes 0.2–0.5 wt% of a blue-tone optical brightener masterbatch to correct the inherent yellow-green edge tint of thick SAN sections, and 0.1–0.3 wt% of a static-dissipative additive only where internal antistatic performance is required; the antistatic package must be revalidated under IEC 61340-5-1 because it can increase surface haze under ASTM D1003-21 from below 1.0% to above 1.5% at the upper addition level. Flammability classification must be confirmed at the final wall thickness under UL 94 HB; if the product specification requires UL 94 V-2 or better, PN-118L100 is outside the operational window and should be replaced by a flame-retarded SAN or polycarbonate grade. Device-level safety compliance for audio/video and information technology equipment follows IEC 62368-1:2023, particularly the fire enclosure requirements and material resistance to heat and fire, but resin suppliers provide only material data and do not certify the end product. End products include audio amplifier front panels, router covers, remote-control windows, and display bezels.

    More Introduction

Chimei KIBISAN SAN PN-118L100 is a transparent styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer pellet supplied by Chi Mei Corporation for injection moulding and profile extrusion where optical clarity, surface hardness, and resistance to household oils and detergents are required. The grade is produced without polybutadiene impact modifier, giving it single-phase transparency that is absent in standard ABS. Typical producer data for the natural pellet include a density of 1.06 g/cm³ (ASTM D792) and a melt flow index of 25 g/10 min at 200°C/5.0 kg load (ASTM D1238). The copolymer contains a balanced acrylonitrile content that raises the heat distortion temperature and solvent resistance above those of unmodified GPPS while maintaining flow sufficient for thin-wall filling.

In dry conditions, the resin can be processed by conventional single-screw extrusion and reciprocating-screw injection moulding. The absence of a butadiene phase eliminates melt rheology complications associated with phase separation, but thermal degradation still must be controlled by barrel residence time and temperature. The following sections define the property window, the primary processing boundaries, and the application contexts in which PN-118L100 resolves specific material-selection conflicts.

Why Is the Melt Flow Index of 25 g/10 min Less Decisive Than Barrel Residence Time?

The melt flow index provides a single-point viscosity ranking but not the shear-rate dependence through gates and runners. During injection moulding, the material has been run on standard general-purpose screws with L/D ratios of 20:1 to 25:1 and compression ratios between 2.2:1 and 2.7:1. The recommended melt-temperature envelope is 220°C to 240°C; barrel feed-zone settings are typically held at 170°C to 190°C to prevent premature pellet compaction and feed-throat bridging. At the nozzle, temperatures below 215°C increase melt viscosity enough to produce gate-freeze hesitation and short shots in multi-cavity tooling with gate diameters below 0.8 mm.

More critical than the flow index is residence time. At the upper melt-temperature boundary of 240°C, residence times above 5 min cause yellowing and molecular weight loss associated with chain scission of the acrylonitrile segments. On injection presses with shot capacities more than 3 times the component mass, melt holdup is excessive; it is preferable to run a smaller barrel at a faster cycle than a larger barrel at a slow cycle. Purging between colour changes should use a high-viscosity GPPS or a commercial SAN purge compound, not polyethylene or PVC, because PE forms incompatible domains that later delaminate at part surfaces.

Within the Chi Mei KIBISAN SAN portfolio, the PN-118L100 occupies an intermediate flow position. It fills multi-cavity tools with shorter flow length-to-wall-thickness ratios than high-flow SAN, but it provides a wider residence-time window and lower tendency to cause jetting at larger gates. When a specified part exceeds a flow length of 150 mm at 2 mm wall thickness, mould-filling simulation should be used rather than assuming linear transfer from the melt flow index.

The tensile and flexural values indicate a rigid styrenic matrix. The published Izod notched impact of 20 J/m means that the material should not be used as a drop-impact replacement for ABS; parts with snap-fit arms require generous root radii and stress-annealed gate areas. On the other hand, the flexural modulus near 3,450 MPa allows structural covers to resist deflection under load without the thickness increase needed for GPPS. Surface hardness is high enough for scratch-resistant display windows, but pencil-scratch data should be generated at end-use thickness using ISO 1518.

Thermal Resistance, Vicat Softening, and the Consequences of Uncontrolled Drying

Short-term thermal properties are commonly quoted as a Vicat softening temperature of 105°C under 10 N load (ASTM D1525) and a heat deflection temperature of 90°C at 1.82 MPa (ASTM D648). These are ranking numbers, not continuous service limits. Under sustained load, the elastic modulus begins to decline well below the Vicat point; components exposed to internal heat sources above 70°C require creep tests under the actual stress state.

Before processing, moisture must be removed from pellet surfaces. At relative humidity above 60%, a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 3–4 h is required. For process stabilisation, the dew point should remain below -30°C, and regrind above 20 wt% should be dried separately because irregular regrind particles can shield absorbed moisture. Inadequate drying results in silver streaking and a reduction of tensile elongation at break.

Mould temperature influences stress relaxation and weld-line formation. The recommended steel temperature range is 30°C to 60°C. In transparent parts thinner than 2 mm, mould temperatures below 30°C increase flow marks and frozen-in orientation; birefringence becomes visible under polarised light. At mould temperatures above 60°C, cycle time increases but weld-line strength improves. Injection pressure typically falls between 70 and 120 MPa, with holding pressure set at 50–70% of the peak injection value. For multi-cavity hot-runner systems, individual gate temperatures should be balanced within ±5°C; wider differences produce cavity-to-cavity weight variation that is visible as dispersion of transmitted light.

When Clarity and Aqueous Detergent Resistance Exclude Butadiene-Modified ABS

ABS components exposed to hot detergent solutions can exhibit surface oxidation and gloss loss because the butadiene phase is vulnerable to free-radical attack. This failure mode is absent in PN-118L100 because the resin is a homogeneous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer without a discrete rubber phase. It is therefore specified for transparent appliance housings, cosmetic containers, medical device enclosures that do not require autoclavability, and point-of-sale display parts that must retain transparency after repeated wipe-down with alcohol or dilute surfactants.

However, replacing ABS with SAN changes impact behaviour. The notched Izod impact of 20 J/m is an order of magnitude below that of general-purpose ABS at 200–350 J/m. Moulded-in snap features, threaded bosses, and undercuts that survive in ABS may fracture at the gate or ejector pin marks in SAN. Design rules must include radiused corners at 0.5–1.0 mm and gate placement away from high-tensile regions. There is no rubber-phase cavitation to blunt cracks.

Values in this comparison are representative published ranges for unfilled commercial grades, not simultaneous lot-specific data.

Comparing Injection Pressure Drop Across GPPS, SAN, and ABS in the Same Hot Runner

In a hot-runner manifold originally sized for GPPS, the SAN melt presents a higher shear viscosity at the same temperature; the pressure drop can rise by 10–20%. The effect is stronger than the increase in melt temperature would suggest because the acrylonitrile comonomer increases polar interactions between polymer chains. If the hot-runner system was designed with marginal gate diameters, the change from GPPS to SAN may cross the short-shot threshold. The remediation path is not to reduce melt temperature below 220°C; rather, the gate diameter may be opened from 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm only after cavity balance is checked.

Compared with ABS, the SAN grade's pressure loss is lower at the same temperature because the two-phase rubber network of ABS contributes a yield stress in small channels. That does not mean SAN is always easier to fill; the higher modulus and lack of rubber plateau mean that freezing of the flow front occurs at a slightly thicker layer. This is why transparent drinkware lids and display frames require a minimum wall thickness of 2 mm when running in a 1,200–2,000 kN hydraulic injection press with a conventional cold runner.

For repeated food-contact use, independent verification is required. SAN copolymers fall under FDA 21 CFR 177.1040, not the general polystyrene regulation. Any food-contact application must be supported by migration data against the intended food simulants under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, including residual acrylonitrile monomer below the applicable specific migration limit. The material should not be hot-filled above 75°C without end-use migration testing, because hot water exposure can increase surface microcrazing and potential extractables release.

For electrical accessory parts, RoHS compliance is based on supplier certification for cadmium, lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Final assembled articles may fall outside RoHS scope if other components contain exceedances.

Solvent Exposure Limits, Stress-Cracking Boundaries, and Chemical Incompatibilities

The SAN matrix resists aliphatic hydrocarbons, vegetable oils, dilute aqueous acids, and alcohols better than GPPS. It is not resistant to ketone solvents, ester plasticisers, chlorinated hydrocarbons, or aromatic fuel components. These fluids swell the styrene-acrylonitrile phase and can initiate crazing at stressed moulded-in inserts. Polar solvent contact should be tested at end-use stress level using ASTM D638 or ISO 527-2 after immersion at 23°C for 24 h. Alcohol contact on clear parts may also craze at the gate if the gate area is not annealed; the gate should be placed away from visible surfaces and local packing pressure reduced to lower residual tensile stress.

Published QUV weathering data for this specific grade are limited; unstabilised SAN is not suitable for direct outdoor exposure. Outdoor applications require a UV-stabilised masterbatch and validation under ISO 4892-2 or ASTM G155. The resin should be stored in a dry area below 50°C, away from direct sunlight, and purged from the machine if shutdown exceeds 30 min. Regrind use above 30 wt% should be validated for optical haze and mechanical property retention. Combinations with amine-based additives should be avoided when the part must resist long-term heat ageing; amine decomposition products accelerate yellowing of the SAN matrix.
