Application of Chimei KIBISAN SAN PN-107

The injection moulding of PN-107 for cosmetic packaging begins with desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h until residual moisture falls below 0.05 %. The melt phase is maintained between 220 °C and 250 °C. Polished cavity surfaces are held at 50 °C to 70 °C to eliminate flow marks on jar shells and cap faces. A general-purpose screw with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1 is used. External mould release agent loading is kept between 0.1 wt% and 0.3 wt% because heavier deposits reduce gloss on SPI-A1 polished steel. Holding pressure is set at 60 % to 80 % of peak injection pressure to minimise sink around cap threads. The grade is injected into double-wall jar outer shells, caps, lipstick sleeves and airless pump collars. REACH Regulation 1907/2006 Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 require phthalate screening for elastomeric wads and gaskets, not for the SAN substrate itself. Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 applies to the finished cosmetic product. Packaging migration testing is conducted per EN 1186-1:2002 when the package formulation includes migratory additives. Oils, esters and fragrance materials are screened per ISO 175:2010. Aggressive fragrance oils with high limonene or ethanol content reduce critical strain at gate vestiges. Environmental stress cracking can initiate at sharp internal corners. Drop-impact resistance of thin cap threads is evaluated by notched Charpy impact per ISO 179-1/1eA. Unreinforced SAN PN-107 is notch-sensitive and should not be designed with a thread root radius below 0.3 mm. Cold runner and cold slug well gating is preferred over hot-tip gating for high-gloss caps because the cold slug well captures nozzle tip drool before it reaches the cavity.

What Restricts the Wall Thickness of Refrigerator Crisper Drawers Moulded from PN-107?

Crisper drawer production requires a wall thickness between 2.0 mm and 3.2 mm to balance rigidity and cooling time. The copolymer is injected at a melt temperature of 225 °C to 245 °C and a mould temperature of 50 °C to 70 °C. A shot weight-to-barrel capacity ratio of 0.30 to 0.60 prevents residence time above 8 min, which would elevate yellowness index per ASTM E313-20. Holding pressure is staged with an initial pressure of 40 MPa to 60 MPa and a second stage at approximately half that value to prevent overpacking at the gate. The component is food contact, so resin must be certified against FDA 21 CFR 181.32 and EU Regulation (EU) 10/2011. Specific migration of acrylonitrile monomer is controlled by resin quality rather than processing. A certificate of analysis is mandatory before food-contact release. Ribs and structural bosses create sink marks when the wall thickness difference exceeds 20 % of the nominal wall. Weld lines around gate bosses cause visible haze if the mould temperature is below 50 °C. Field experience on 300 t toggle presses indicates that low mould temperature leads to jetting at the gate edge rather than a uniform melt front. The finished tray is assembled as a crisper drawer, door bin or egg tray. Drop impact at 4 °C is a limiting property. Notched Charpy impact per ISO 179-1/1eA should be assessed on humidified mouldings because dry-as-moulded SAN samples show lower mean energy. Dimensional inspection is conducted after 24 h at 23 °C because post-mould shrinkage in flow direction ranges from 0.4 % to 0.6 %.

Transparent snap-fit battery cover plates and electronics enclosure windows injection moulded from unreinforced PN-107 require a different venting strategy from textured ABS grades. The wall thickness is typically 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm. Vent land depth is kept at 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm to prevent flash while allowing gas escape. A hot runner with valve gating is used for thin-wall closure plates to avoid cold runner material losses. Flow path-to-wall thickness ratios of 80:1 to 110:1 are attainable at a melt temperature of 230 °C to 240 °C. The screw uses an L/D ratio of 18:1 to 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.8:1. Antistatic additives, when required for dust windows, are limited to low-volatile packages because additive loading above 2.0 wt% raises haze. The finished parts include battery holder frames, transparent battery cover plates and dust windows on handheld electronic housings. RoHS 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 requires absence of restricted phthalates, lead and cadmium. XRF screening of masterbatch and finished mouldings is performed before dispatch. Combustibility testing per UL 94 typically returns a HB classification for unreinforced grades at 1.5 mm. Any product requiring V-1 or V-0 cannot use unmodified PN-107. Alkaline electrolyte leakage is not sealed by the transparent window. Prolonged direct contact with potassium hydroxide solution is screened per ISO 175:2010 before industrial acceptance.

When Twin-Shot Moulding Joins SAN PN-107 to Elastomeric Grips in Writing Instruments

Two-shot stationery production uses SAN PN-107 as the first shot barrel and an olefinic or styrenic TPE as the second shot grip. The first shot is moulded at 230 °C to 250 °C and the TPE is injected at 180 °C to 210 °C to prevent surface remelting of the SAN substrate. The bond is primarily mechanical interlock. If a chemical tie is required, the TPE is selected for its compatibility with styrene domains. Grip layer thickness is held between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm. Thicker sections extend cooling and can trap gas at the overmould interface. Paraffinic oil from TPE systems migrates into the SAN barrel and creates radial stress cracking at the writing tip. White oil plasticiser loading is screened by accelerated ageing at 60 °C for 72 h followed by visual inspection. Single-shot writing instrument components such as ruler bodies and mechanical pencil barrels are gated at the clip boss to hide gate blush. Compliance is based on EN 71-3 migration of elements when the article is marketed to children, plus REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 for the TPE grip. The SAN substrate itself is normally below phthalate detection limits. The weight ratio between the first shot and total part is 0.65 to 0.85 to maintain barrel rigidity. Moulded-in threads for pencil tips require a minimum thread crest radius of 0.2 mm because the unmodified resin is notch-sensitive at circumferential stress concentrations.

Light Diffusing Components Blended with PMMA Bead Concentrate and Ultraviolet Stabiliser Loadings

Indoor LED diffuser plates and appliance light lenses are produced by sheet extrusion of PN-107 with a PMMA bead concentrate. The concentrate loading is 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% and is pre-dried with the SAN at 80 °C for 3 h to avoid void formation. Extrusion melt temperature is 210 °C to 230 °C and the polishing roll stack is held at 80 °C to 90 °C. For injection moulded lenses, the same melt window applies but mould temperature is 60 °C to 75 °C. A UV absorber can be added at 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% for indoor fluorescent and white LED exposure. HALS at 0.2 wt% to 0.4 wt% improves colour stability. Luminous transmittance and haze are measured per ASTM D1003-21. The finished components include LED panel diffuser sheets, appliance indicator lenses and illuminated switch surrounds. Electrical safety compliance falls under IEC 60598-1 for luminaires and RoHS for the completed assembly. PN-107 is not an outdoor lens material. Ultraviolet exposure above that encountered in indirect indoor lighting causes measurable yellowness increase and reduces luminous transmittance over service life. For direct edge-lit light guide plates, PMMA or injection-grade PC should be substituted because SAN absorption at 450 nm is higher than PMMA. Published data for this specific SAN diffuser light guide configuration is limited.

Ultrasonically welded water tank covers in room humidifiers impose a simultaneous requirement for optical clarity and weld-line burst resistance. The tank shells are injection moulded at 210 °C to 240 °C with wall thickness of 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm. Mould temperature is set at 50 °C to 70 °C to ensure the transparent weld ribs replicate. Ultrasonic welding is conducted at 20 kHz with a shear joint designed to concentrate welding energy along an interference of 0.25 mm to 0.35 mm. Amplitude and down speed are matched to avoid microcracking around the joint because unreinforced SAN is notch-sensitive. The resin is dried to below 0.05 % moisture before moulding. Otherwise steam bubbles appear as white streaks near the weld chamfer. Water contact testing is performed per ISO 175:2010. Compliance for the appliance is under IEC 60335-1 and IEC 60335-2-98. The SAN component itself is not autoclavable. Repeated exposure to water above 80 °C or steam sterilisation cycles induces thermal annealing and can alter impact response. Oxidising cleaning agents used in humidifier maintenance are screened by immersion before production release. The finished parts include humidifier tank shells, water window panels and steam appliance reservoirs. Sharp internal radii at the ultrasonic joint are kept above 0.5 mm to avoid stress concentration during horn pressure.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Chimei KIBISAN SAN PN-107 is a transparent amorphous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer supplied as cylindrical pellets for injection molding and, in selected high-flow conversion operations, for melt-blended coextrusion. The product is positioned at the high-flow end of the KIBISAN SAN product line. Under ISO 1183-1:2019, density is typically 1.06–1.07 g/cm³; tensile stress at yield is reported in the 66–74 MPa range under ISO 527-2/1A; flexural modulus is reported between 3200 MPa and 3800 MPa under ISO 178. Melt-flow-rate data measured under ASTM D1238 at 200 °C/5 kg are typically distributed between 18 g/10 min and 26 g/10 min across production lots, although the certificate of analysis for a specific lot should govern acceptance testing. The nitrile comonomer segment modifies solubility and environmental stress cracking behavior relative to general-purpose polystyrene, giving PN-107 a more favorable balance of clarity, chemical resistance, and high-shear melt flow for thin-wall transparent parts.

How Does PN-107 Compare to GPPS, PMMA, and Transparent ABS in Transparent Rigid Applications?

The practical distinction between PN-107 and general-purpose polystyrene is most clearly observed in heat distortion and stress-crack response. Under ISO 75-2/A at 1.8 MPa, PN-107 typically yields 86–92 °C, whereas many GPPS grades fall below 80 °C. Contact with aliphatic hydrocarbon solutions, diluted household cleaners, and some cosmetic formulations is less likely to induce the cracking patterns seen in unstabilized GPPS, though the quantitative comparison depends on formulation, surface finish, and molded-in stress. Relative to PMMA, PN-107 has lower density and higher melt fluidity, but its light transmittance is 88–90 % under ISO 13468-2, which is below the 91–92 % range typical of polished PMMA sheet. The surface hardness of SAN also does not match PMMA: Rockwell R values near 83 under ASTM D785 are representative, and mar-resistant coatings may be required for optical surfaces. Relative to transparent ABS, PN-107 provides higher transparency and lower haze, but its notched Izod impact is only 1.2–1.6 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A, roughly one order of magnitude below many transparent ABS compounds. The selection of PN-107 therefore rests on a combination of thermal performance, flow, and optical quality rather than on a single maximum property.

    Mold shrinkage ISO 294-4 0.4–0.6 %

Across production-scale injection molding cells, the principal batch-to-batch variable is not the melting-point distribution or the nominal melt flow rate, but residual moisture and barrel residence. Drying is mandatory at 80 ± 5 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point at or below -25 °C when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. A closed conveying system or dried-air purge is required in high-humidity transfer lines to hold moisture below 0.03 wt%. On a 100-tonne hydraulic injection molding machine with a 35 mm diameter reciprocating screw and L/D 20, this grade processes through barrel settings from 200 °C at the feed throat to 230 °C at the nozzle, with mold temperature held at 40–70 °C for thin-wall parts. Screw back pressure is set at 0.4–0.8 MPa, and shot size is maintained between 50 % and 80 % of barrel capacity to limit melt stagnation. For flow sections below 0.8 mm, injection pressure commonly reaches 70–140 MPa. Gate freeze time at a 1 mm diameter pin gate is typically 2–4 s; the value should be confirmed by gate-seal analysis because early gate freeze produces sink, while late gate freeze can amplify differential shrinkage.

If High-Flow Rheology and Weld-Line Weakness Become Competing Constraints

When a high-flow grade is deployed in a multi-cavity tool with gates below 0.5 mm, the melt pressure at the nozzle may decrease, but the resulting weld lines can become the controlling mechanical defect. In PN-107, weld-line depth and orientation are governed by the meeting-front temperature. Processing at the low end of the melt-temperature window, below 210 °C, may increase visible knit lines and reduce tensile elongation at break to 2.0 % or lower in weld-line regions, even though bulk tensile elongation remains 2.5–3.0 % under ISO 527-2/1A. Cavity pressure sensors and short-shot studies should be used to verify that flow fronts arrive at the weld line with a temperature at least 20 °C above the glass transition temperature of the compound. For small gates, shear rate can exceed 10,000 s⁻¹; the resulting molecular orientation may improve fill but can increase gate blush and environmental stress craze susceptibility. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. Molders are advised to generate design-of-experiment gate-freeze and weld-line data on the production tool rather than extrapolating from spiral-flow specimens.

Measured on polished 2 mm plaques, haze of PN-107 remains in the 0.3–0.8 % range under ISO 14782. Higher haze in molded parts is usually traceable to melt temperature excursions, barrel residence exceeding 5 min, or abrasive screw and barrel wear releasing fine metal particulates. The grade is not inherently UV-stabilized for long-duration exterior exposure. Accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 typically reveals yellowing and loss of impact at 500–1000 h unless an adequate hindered-amine light stabilizer and UV absorber package is compounded into the polymer melt. In indoor cosmetic packaging, media cases, and appliance housings, optical retention is more predictable, provided the mold surface is maintained at SPI B1 gloss level or better and ejector pin marking is limited by controlled undercut release.

Vicat Softening, Dimensional Stability, and Regulatory Verification for Finished Articles

Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306 method B50 is typically 106–110 °C. Heat distortion temperature at 1.8 MPa is 86–92 °C. Continuous load-bearing use above 70 °C is not recommended unless creep data under ISO 899-1 have been evaluated for the specific wall section and support span. Mold shrinkage is generally 0.4–0.6 %, with flow-direction and transverse-direction values diverging in high-orientation thin-wall regions; compensation factors should be developed from cavity-pressure measurements rather than from published linear shrinkage tables alone. Under UL 94, commodity SAN grades are typically rated HB at 1.5 mm; PN-107 is not a flame-retardant material and should not be used where V-2 or better is required. The pellets may be accompanied by documentation relating to RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Article 33 obligations. Food-contact suitability must be confirmed against the specific additive package, colorant, and migration testing under the applicable jurisdiction. A supplier letter without a defined numerical migration result is insufficient for EU Regulation 10/2011 compliance, and direct food-contact use should not be inferred from the base resin chemistry alone.

For finished-article quality after ejection, the dominant defects are gate blush, sink, and differential shrinkage. Gate blush in PN-107 is minimized by raising melt temperature to 225–235 °C at the nozzle, reducing injection velocity below the shear-rate threshold at which surface melt fracture begins, and using heated sprue bushings rather than cold sprues. Sink is controlled by holding pressure 30–50 % higher than the injection pressure measured at the cavity sensor and by maintaining a holding time sufficient to seal the gate. Differential shrinkage in large flat panels is controlled by mold temperatures in the 50–70 °C range and by avoiding abrupt wall thickness transitions exceeding 25 %. Hot-runner systems should keep manifold temperature no higher than 230 °C. Nozzle tips with minimal dead spots are preferred over large sprue bushings to reduce stagnant resin accumulation and the associated yellowing or black-spec formation during extended production runs.
