In automotive interior trim production, Chimei Polylac PA-793 is predried in a desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point of −40 °C at 80 °C for 4 h until the pellet moisture content drops below 0.02 wt%. The material is then fed into a reciprocating-screw injection molding machine with a clamp force between 1,200 kN and 3,500 kN depending on tool size; the melt temperature is held at 230–250 °C, the mold temperature at 40–70 °C, and the injection pressure at 80–120 MPa. The production formulation for A/B/C pillar covers, door panel trim inserts, and seat side shields uses 93–97 wt% PA-793, 2–4 wt% color masterbatch, and 0.1–0.5 wt% processing stabilizer, while sprues and runners are reintroduced at a maximum regrind ratio of 15 wt%. Barrel residence time is limited to 5 min at 250 °C to avoid thermal degradation that lowers impact strength and causes visible yellowing on low-gloss textured surfaces. Compliance targets for this sector include flammability classification under FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795, interior emissions limits under VDA 277, tensile property verification under ISO 527-2:2012, flexural property verification under ISO 178:2019, and Charpy impact testing under ISO 179-1:2010. The injection molding process uses a two-stage filling profile with a fast initial injection to avoid short shots in thin trim ribs and a reduced pack pressure of 60–80 MPa to control sink marks on visible surfaces. Terminal parts include A-pillar trims, B-pillar upper trims, center console side panels, door pull escutcheons, and seat side covers, all with low-gloss or textured mold surfaces produced without post-mold painting.
Electroplated decorative components molded from Chimei Polylac PA-793 are processed first by injection molding of the raw resin, then by a wet plating line in which the ABS substrate must develop adhesion through micro-roughness after etching. In a conventional chromic acid etch bath at 60–70 °C for 8–12 min, with etch temperature controlled within ±2 °C, the butadiene phase is selectively oxidized to create anchor sites for the subsequent electroless nickel or copper layer. If a chromium-free etch process is substituted for environmental compliance, published data for PA-793 in that specific chemistry is limited, and line qualification should be conducted against the adhesion requirements of ASTM B604-95. The molding formulation for platable parts is intentionally simple: 100 wt% virgin PA-793 is preferred, with regrind held below 10 wt% because oxidized regrind edges and surface contaminants can generate pit defects at the plating surface. The injection molding sequence uses a melt temperature of 230–250 °C, a mold temperature of 50–80 °C, and a slow-to-medium injection speed to minimize surface orientation and weld-line depth; direct gate or fan gate locations are selected to keep weld lines away from Class A plating surfaces. Barrel melt temperature is not permitted to exceed 260 °C, because outgassing of low-molecular-weight degradation products creates microvoids that appear as pinholes after the chromium topcoat. After molding, the parts enter the plating process: acid etch, neutralization, activation with palladium/tin colloidal solution, electroless nickel deposition to 0.3–0.5 µm, copper deposition to 15–25 µm, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, and chromium topcoats. Thermal cycling is performed according to ASTM B604-95 to verify adhesion through 3 cycles of −30 °C to 80 °C, with no blisters or peeling. Terminal product types include automotive exterior emblems, grille accent trim, door handle caps, sanitary faucet handles, and plumbing trim rings.

For Wi-Fi router housings, set-top box covers, and smart speaker enclosures, Chimei Polylac PA-793 is processed on an electric injection molding machine with a clamp force of 800–1,800 kN. The compounded formulation contains 90–96 wt% PA-793, 3–6 wt% ABS-based color masterbatch, and 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant/stabilizer; regrind is permitted up to 20 wt% if the regrind is dried and free of dust. The melt temperature is maintained at 220–240 °C, and the mold temperature is set to 30–60 °C. The molding process uses a high injection speed to fill thin-wall sections of 1.5–2.5 mm without premature freeze-off, and a pack pressure of 50–80 MPa for 2–4 s. Hot-runner valve gates are used on multi-cavity tools to balance flow-front advancement and reduce gate blush on visible top covers. Compliance for the sector includes IEC 62368-1:2018 for ICT equipment safety, UL 94 HB flame class at 1.5 mm, RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH 1907/2006 substance restrictions. Terminal finished parts include Wi-Fi router top covers, set-top box front panels, smart speaker grille frames, and IoT gateway enclosures.
Appliance structural panels made from Chimei Polylac PA-793 include washing machine control panel frames, refrigerator door cap inserts, and dryer control bezels. The material is formulated with 88–95 wt% PA-793, 4–8 wt% pigment masterbatch, and 0.2–0.4 wt% external mold release; regrind is capped at 15 wt% to maintain consistent color and impact. Drying is performed at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a moisture content below 0.02 wt%. The injection molding process for a washing machine panel frame of 2.5–3.5 mm nominal wall thickness uses a melt temperature of 230–250 °C, a mold temperature of 50–80 °C, and a pack pressure of 70–100 MPa held for 5–8 s to reduce sink mark depth on cosmetic surfaces. Mold cavities are vented to 0.02 mm depth, and sequential valve gating is used on panels longer than 500 mm to balance flow-front advancement and prevent weld-line read-through. Cooling time is typically 18–25 s to bring the part below the deflection temperature threshold before ejection; premature ejection produces corner warpage that is detectable during later appliance assembly. Compliance includes IEC 60335-1:2020, UL 746C:2021, and UL 94 HB, with ingress protection verification under IEC 60529 IPX4 where the panel forms part of a water-exposed enclosure boundary. Terminal products include washing machine control panel frames, refrigerator door cap trims, dryer control bezels, and dishwasher fascia strips.
For power tool housings, Chimei Polylac PA-793 is compounded with 95–98 wt% virgin resin, 1–3 wt% carbon black or color masterbatch, and 0.1–0.3 wt% high-temperature processing aid; regrind from hot-runner sprues is allowed at 20 wt% maximum. The pellets are dried at 80 °C for 4 h in a desiccant dryer to 0.02 wt% moisture. The housing mold is run on a 1,200–2,500 kN clamp force injection machine with a melt temperature of 230–250 °C and a mold temperature of 40–60 °C. Impact strength under ISO 179-1:2010 Charpy notched and ASTM D256-10e1 Izod is monitored because the finished tool must pass a 1.0 m drop onto concrete at −20 °C without cracking. The process uses a reduced screw speed of 50–80 rpm and back pressure of 5–10 bar to minimize shear-induced degradation. Weld lines at screw bosses and split lines are moved to low-stress zones by adjusting gate positions, because weld-line notching is the primary failure mode in cold-drop tests. Compliance includes IEC 62841-1:2014, UL 94 HB, and REACH 1907/2006. Terminal finished parts are battery-powered drill motor housings, angle grinder rear handles, impact driver rear covers, and orbital sander body shells.
In benchtop in-vitro diagnostic analyzer bezels, laboratory centrifuge lids, and ultrasound cart cable management covers, Chimei Polylac PA-793 is molded in a controlled area with filtered air and hard tooling. The formulation uses 96–99 wt% PA-793, 0.5–2 wt% antistatic masterbatch, and 0.1–0.3 wt% stabilizer; regrind is limited to 10 wt% because particulate contamination from recycled material can exceed clean-room acceptance criteria. The drying step is 80 °C for 4 h to 0.02 wt% moisture. Injection molding parameters are a melt temperature of 220–240 °C, mold temperature of 30–50 °C, and injection pressure of 80–120 MPa. The molding cell is configured for quick mold changes between low-volume diagnostic device variants, with the screw and barrel purged after each color change to prevent cross-contamination of light-colored analyzer bezels. Compliance includes IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012, ISO 10993-1:2018, and ISO 10993-5:2009 for cytotoxicity evaluation when the device enclosure may be contacted by operators but not by patients for long durations. Terminal finished products include IVD analyzer bezels, centrifuge lid housings, diagnostic cart cable covers, and ultrasound control panel frames.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) POLYLAC PA-793 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade supplied under the POLYLAC trade name. The “PA” prefix denotes the ABS series; the numeric suffix 793 identifies a specific melt-flow and impact-strength balance within the general-purpose ABS portfolio. Under ISO 1183-1, the density is recorded at 1.04 g/cm³, and the melt mass-flow rate under ISO 1133-1 at 220 °C with a 10 kg load is 20 g/10 min. The material is specified for injection moulded enclosures, appliance housings, consumer-electronics bezels, automotive interior trim, and structural brackets where medium-to-large parts require acceptable mould filling without severe loss of room-temperature ductility.
Representative values from the manufacturer’s published data sheet are given below. Lot-to-lot variation and test-specimen preparation influence the measured values; the tabulated data are suitable for preliminary design and material-selection calculations.

Drying prior to melt processing is mandatory. A desiccant-bed hopper dryer set at 80 °C for 2–4 h reduces moisture below 0.05 % by mass; when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, residence time should be extended to 4 h and the drying-air dew point maintained at or below −30 °C. Barrel temperature profiles from feed zone to nozzle are normally set between 210 °C and 240 °C, with melt temperature measured by an inserted thermocouple held at 220–250 °C. Above 250 °C, the styrene-acrylonitrile phase begins to degrade, producing yellowing and molecular-weight loss; shot residence time at barrel temperatures above 240 °C should not exceed 5 min. For hot-runner tools, manifold and nozzle temperatures should be controlled within ±5 °C to avoid freeze-off or thermal degradation.
Mould surface temperatures of 40–60 °C are adequate for general-purpose parts, while high-gloss surfaces require 70–80 °C. On all-electric injection moulding machines of 350–1,200 t clamp force, injection pressure typically falls between 80–120 MPa hydraulic pressure, with hold pressure maintained at 60–80 % of injection pressure. Back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa and screw rotation of 40–80 rpm on barrier screws with L/D ratios from 20:1 to 22:1 provide adequate homogenisation without excessive frictional heat. A cushion of 3–6 mm prevents screw-bottoming at transfer. Shot volume should fill 30–80 % of barrel capacity; lower utilisation increases thermal history variation, and higher utilisation limits decompression. Mould shrinkage measured on 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaques under ISO 294-4 is 0.4–0.6 %. Tool draft angles of 0.5–1 ° on ribs and bosses reduce ejection stress.
Purge compounds for colour change should be selected from SAN or general-purpose ABS carriers. Halogenated purge compounds are not recommended because residual chlorine can corrode screw and check-ring surfaces. If moisture is not controlled, surface splay, silver streaks, and reduced tensile strength under ISO 527-2 are observed. Production-scale failure modes associated with inadequate drying or excessive barrel temperature include gate blush, jetting, and localised gloss differences on textured surfaces.
PA-793 occupies a middle position between the high-flow general-purpose grade PA-757 and the high-impact grade PA-747. At 220 °C and 10 kg, PA-793 and PA-757 both have a melt mass-flow rate near 20 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1, while PA-747 is lower at approximately 12 g/10 min. The room-temperature notched Izod impact value for PA-793 is approximately 24 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A; PA-757 is closer to 21 kJ/m², and PA-747 is nearer 35 kJ/m². Flexural modulus follows a similar ordering: PA-793 is approximately 2,200 MPa under ISO 178, PA-757 is comparable, and PA-747 is closer to 2,000 MPa. The practical consequence is that PA-793 is selected when a component must survive snap assembly or occasional impact but still fill thin-wall regions at lower injection pressure than PA-747.
Compared with flame-retardant PA-765, PA-793 remains UL 94 HB and does not rely on a brominated flame-retardant package. This avoids the density increase, lower heat-deflection performance, and antimony trioxide synergist handling associated with V-class ABS grades. Tooling and processing differences are directly measurable: PA-793 typically produces less mould plate-out than brominated ABS in extended production runs. If electroplating performance is required, published data for PA-793 in peel-adhesion testing under ASTM B533 is limited; a dedicated Chi Mei plating grade should be evaluated instead.
Gating and wall-thickness decisions control the balance between fill pressure and weld-line integrity. Typical wall thickness for PA-793 components is 1.5–3.0 mm. Below 1.5 mm, melt pressure drop increases rapidly, and weld-line strength retention measured on ISO 527-2 tensile specimens can fall below 70 % of the un-welded reference when mould temperature is below 40 °C. Gates should be positioned in the thickest section, with gate land length of 0.5–1.0 mm and gate diameter approximately 0.5–0.8 times the nominal wall thickness. For multi-cavity tooling, runner balancing should be verified with short-shot studies; cavity-to-cavity fill imbalance above 5 % by mass correlates with elevated batch-to-batch dimensional variance.
In snap-fit and living-hinge features, internal corner radii should be at least 0.5 mm to reduce notch stress concentration. Weld lines in directly gated deep-draw parts are managed by sequential valve-gate control rather than by increasing melt temperature alone. When textured surfaces are used, grain depth should not exceed 0.1 mm for demoulding without excessive draft.
Thermal homogeneity in multi-drop hot-runner manifolds is critical because PA-793 exhibits shear-sensitive melt viscosity. Manifold temperature differentials greater than ±5 °C produce sequential cavity filling, visible flow hesitation, and gloss variation on polished or grained surfaces. Valve-gate sequencing should be tuned using in-mould cavity pressure sensors; the material transfers from velocity control to pressure control at 95–98 % of cavity fill. Premature transfer causes sink marks, while late transfer can overpack gates and create residual stress near the sprue.
For high-gloss parts, tool steel should be polished to SPI/A1 or SPI/A2 finish, and mould temperature should be increased to 70–80 °C. Lower mould temperatures reduce surface replication and increase the risk of jetting in direct-gated parts. Injection speeds that produce fill times below 0.5 s can exceed 100,000 s⁻¹ wall shear rate in thin sections; such conditions should be validated by pressure-limited trials because excessive shear generates frictional heat, resin degradation, and visible silver streaks. Hot-runner nozzle tips should be sized to maintain shear rate below the onset of melt fracture.
The table lists standards commonly used for grade characterisation and regulatory evaluation. Compliance status is product-specific and should be confirmed against the current manufacturer certificate and the exact part geometry.

At the application level, PA-793 is used in monitor and television enclosures, small-appliance housings, vacuum cleaner bodies, automotive interior trim panels, and structural brackets. The UL 94 HB rating at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm is acceptable where the end-use standard does not require V-class flame retardance. For automotive interior components, grained tool surfaces are commonly specified, and appearance validation includes gloss retention, scratch resistance, and dimensional stability under ISO 1110 accelerated weathering. Chemical resistance is characteristic of ABS: dilute aqueous acids and alkalis are generally tolerated, but stressed parts exposed to ketones, esters, or aromatic hydrocarbons may undergo environmental stress cracking; compatibility testing under ISO 22088-2 is advised for snap-fit parts in contact with cleaning agents or aggressive service fluids.
In production, PA-793 is often selected as a halogen-free alternative to flame-retardant ABS where V-class requirements are absent, because it reduces tool maintenance and avoids antimony trioxide-related handling considerations. The processing window is broad enough for conventional cold-runner and hot-runner moulds, but the grade’s mechanical property retention depends on drying, melt-temperature control, and gate design. Published data for PA-793 in electroplating-specific configurations is limited; components requiring plated surfaces should be evaluated using a dedicated plating-grade ABS or a validated adhesion-promoting process.
