CHIMEI Polylac PA-778 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding grade used in thin-wall automotive components, household appliance housings, consumer electronics enclosures, decorative painted/metallized trim, office-automation equipment, and as the ABS fraction in ABS/polycarbonate alloy feedstock. The downstream routes described below are restricted to melt-conversion sectors where ABS is an established material class; chemical handling, outdoor construction, and structural packaging applications are excluded because they demand either chemical resistance or long-term UV exposure beyond the documented operating window of this grade. All processing conditions are expressed as production-scale ranges and should be revalidated against the lot-specific certificate of analysis and the current manufacturer technical data sheet.
Automotive interior trim uses PA-778 primarily in grained, low-gloss components that must survive cabin heat-soak without visible gloss change or excessive post-mold shrinkage. The base formulation is set at 100 phr PA-778, with carbon-black or mineral-laden color masterbatch added at 0.6–1.2 wt% and a lubricant/antioxidant package at 0.1–0.3 wt%. Uncontaminated sprue/runner regrind is introduced at 10–15 wt%; regrind levels above 20 wt% are excluded from Class A grain-matched parts because multiple heat histories shift the melt-volume-flow rate by more than ±5% and increase flow-line contrast under low-angle illumination. Drying is mandatory at 80°C ± 5°C for 2–4 hours in a desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ −30°C, targeting residual moisture ≤ 0.05 wt%. The melt temperature is held at 230–250°C, the mold temperature at 50–70°C, and the screw is a three-zone design with L/D 20:1–24:1, compression ratio 2.4:1–2.8:1, and non-return ring clearance ≤ 0.05 mm. Filling speed is profiled to reach 85–95% of cavity volume before switchover to hold pressure of 50–70 MPa. Gate land thickness is held at 60–70% of the local wall section, and gate diameter is 1.5–2.5 mm for nominal wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm to avoid jetting and knit-line weakness. Compliance for interior cabin parts is assessed against FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795 with a horizontal burn rate not exceeding 102 mm/min, ELV Directive 2000/53/EC Annex II, REACH SVHC candidate-list screening, and the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List. Terminal component types include instrument cluster housings, HVAC vent louvers, steering column shrouds, seat belt anchorage covers, door map-pocket substrates, and center console lower side trim.
Appliance housing applications use PA-778 where the part must tolerate intermittent surface temperatures up to 65–80°C, periodic contact with diluted household cleaning agents, and repeated mechanical assembly without stress cracking at screw bosses or snap-fit undercuts. The polymer is introduced at 100 phr as the sole resin, combined with a TiO₂-based white masterbatch at 1.5–2.5 wt% for high-opacity panels; indoor UV-exposed positions receive an additional benzotriazole-based UV absorber at 0.2–0.4 wt%. A silicone-based processing aid at 0.2–0.5 wt% reduces melt friction in multi-cavity tools, and edge-trim regrind is limited to ≤ 10 wt% to maintain chromatic stability with ΔE < 1.0 under CIE D65/10° color measurement. Drying follows the same desiccant-dryer boundary as other ABS routes: ≤ 0.05 wt% residual moisture before feeding to the hopper. Melt temperature is maintained at 220–245°C, mold temperature at 40–80°C, and shallow textured cavity surfaces require draft angles of 1.5–3.0° to avoid ejection-induced stress whitening. Injection machines with clamp force between 250–1300 t are selected according to projected part area, and hot-runner sequential valve gates are preferred for long panel geometries to prevent gas traps and knit-line displacement. Compliance is demonstrated by UL 94 HB thickness classification at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, IEC 60335-1:2020 end-product safety testing for household appliances, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II as amended by (EU) 2015/863 with lead ≤ 1000 ppm, cadmium ≤ 100 ppm, mercury ≤ 1000 ppm, hexavalent chromium ≤ 1000 ppm, and phthalates ≤ 1000 ppm per homogeneous material, and REACH SVHC data verification. Terminal product types include washing machine top covers, refrigerator door bins, air-conditioner front panels, vacuum cleaner dust-cup housings, water-dispenser drip trays, and control-panel bezels; direct food-contact surfaces are outside the documented use boundary for this grade.
Consumer electronics enclosures convert PA-778 by thin-wall injection molding because the grade permits filling of 1.2–1.8 mm sections over flow lengths greater than 250 mm without excessive clamp force. The molding formulation is maintained at 100 phr PA-778, with a non-blooming antistatic masterbatch at 0.5–1.0 wt% to reduce dust accumulation on display bezels; surface resistivity is verified according to IEC 62631-3-2, though published data for the antistatic formulation in PA-778 is limited and should be established on production-scale parts. A scratch-modification silicone masterbatch at 0.3–0.6 wt% is added for matte-textured surfaces, and a black masterbatch at 0.8–1.5 wt% is used for light-shielding rear covers. Melt temperature is set between 235–250°C, mold temperature between 50–75°C, and filling time between 0.5–1.5 s; hydraulic injection velocity is adjusted to 150–300 mm/s at the screw advance stage. Hold pressure is 60–80 MPa, and clamp force is estimated at 3–5 kN/cm² of projected area. Vent depth is limited to 0.02–0.03 mm to avoid flash while allowing gas escape at thin-wall flow fronts. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 62368-1:2023 for audio/video and information-technology equipment, UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH, and WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU for end-of-life marking. Terminal products include monitor rear covers, television stand covers, set-top box enclosures, router top shells, keyboard frames, mouse shells, and remote-control housing subassemblies. This grade is not suitable for fire-enclosure functions requiring UL 94 V-0 at thin wall unless validated with a flame-retardant package that is outside the documented PA-778 datasheet.
Decorative painted and PVD-metallized ABS trim substrates are produced by first injection molding PA-778 with a mold temperature at the upper end of the recommended range, 60–80°C, to minimize surface orientation and improve coating adhesion. The molding formulation retains PA-778 at 100 phr, with a black masterbatch at 0.5–1.0 wt% and an internal mold-release additive limited to ≤ 0.2 wt%; silicone-based external mold releases are prohibited on cavities because residual silicone films reduce paint cross-cut adhesion. After ejection, parts are cleaned in an alkaline degreasing bath at 50–60°C, rinsed with deionized water having conductivity ≤ 10 µS/cm, and dried with filtered forced air. Plasma or adhesion-promoter treatment is applied immediately before a robotic basecoat at 8–12 μm dry film thickness. For PVD metallization, an aluminum layer of 80–120 nm is deposited under vacuum, followed by a clearcoat at 25–35 μm; painted parts receive a two-component acrylic topcoat at 20–30 μm and are cured at 80°C for 30 minutes. Adhesion is checked by ASTM D3359-17 Method B cross-cut tape test and, where specified, ISO 2409:2020. Compliance includes RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC screening for pigments, adhesion promoters, and PVD residues. Terminal part types include painted center-console bezels, door-speaker grilles, nameplates, gearshift surrounds, mirror housing trim, and PVD-coated logos. For electroplating lines using chromic acid etch at 60–70°C, published data for this specific PA-778 configuration is limited; a dedicated plating ABS should be selected unless etch adhesion is validated on production tooling.
In office automation and information-equipment enclosures, PA-778 is selected for large flat panels that must integrate bosses, snap fits, insert-molded brass threads, and EMI-shielding tape without cracking during ultrasonic welding or self-tapping screw insertion. The formulation includes PA-778 at 100 phr, a black masterbatch at 0.8–1.2 wt%, an antistatic masterbatch at 0.5 wt% for dust-sensitive copier internals, and clean in-house regrind up to 20 wt%; regrind above this threshold is not used in tensile- or screw-boss-bearing sections because Izod impact retention per ISO 180:2023 after three heat histories becomes machine-dependent. Injection molding uses clamp-force capacities from 800–2500 t with sequential valve gating on 3–8 drops to control weld lines in panels with wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm. Melt temperature is held at 230–250°C, mold temperature at 50–70°C, hold pressure at 50–70 MPa, and cooling time at 15–30 s depending on hot-runner channel balance. Gate diameter for large direct gates is 2.0–3.0 mm, and gate land thickness is kept at 60–70% of part wall thickness. Compliance is assessed under UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, IEC 62368-1:2023, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, and REACH. Terminal components include printer top covers, scanner lids, copier side panels, multifunction-printer frame parts, monitor stands, and keyboard trays.
Where a compounder uses PA-778 as the ABS fraction in an ABS/polycarbonate alloy, the conversion target is a reduction in notch sensitivity and an upward shift in heat-deflection temperature relative to neat ABS without sacrificing melt-flow stability. The formulation boundary for PA-778 is 60–75 wt%, with polycarbonate at 25–40 wt%, a compatibilizer at 1–3 wt%, a phosphite-based antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 wt%, and, where internal release is required, a low-migration processing aid at 0.1–0.3 wt%. Both resin streams are pre-dried to ≤ 0.05 wt% moisture before feeding to a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 36:1–48:1, barrel temperatures ramped from 230°C at the feed throat to 255°C at the die, screw speed 250–450 rpm, and vacuum devolatilization at ≤ −0.08 MPa. The melt is strand-pelletized after a water bath held at 20–35°C, producing pellets with a nominal diameter of 3.0 mm. Compliance is verified by ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt-volume-flow rate, ISO 527-1:2019 for tensile properties, ISO 180:2023 for notched Izod impact, ISO 306 Method B50 for Vicat softening, ISO 75-1/-2 for heat deflection temperature, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, and REACH. Terminal product types from compounded pellets include automotive interior brackets, electrical enclosure bases, appliance trim carriers, and power-tool housings requiring intermediate heat resistance; published data for the specific PA-778/PC blend ratio at production scale is limited and should be confirmed by design-of-experiments on the target extruder.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-778 is a high-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding grade within the POLYLAC product family. The manufacturer positions the material for thin-wall electronic housings, domestic appliance fascias, handset bodies, and small appliance components where flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios exceed those practical for general-purpose ABS grades. The product is specified through a multiple-property data set rather than a single value. Melt volume-flow rate is reported according to ISO 1133-1 at 220°C under a 10 kg load; tensile stress at yield and nominal strain at break are measured under ISO 527-2; flexural modulus is obtained with ISO 178; notched Izod impact is reported under ASTM D256; and deflection temperature is measured according to ASTM D648 Method B. The grade is also classifiable under ASTM D4673 and ISO 2580-1 designation systems. Published lot-specific values vary with production campaign and color concentrate loading; the current manufacturer technical data sheet is the reference for incoming quality-control limits. The polybutadiene rubber content and graft morphology in PA-778 are adjusted to preserve practical impact resistance while lowering melt viscosity relative to extrusion-oriented ABS grades.
In ABS compounding, raising melt flow rate typically requires reduced molecular weight or increased internal lubrication; both changes can depress notched impact resistance. PA-778 is therefore evaluated through paired flow and fracture values. The melt flow rate at 220°C and 10 kg is read alongside notched Izod impact at 23°C, tensile stress at yield, and flexural modulus. The paired data matter most in thin-wall molding because high injection speed and rapid cavity cooling lower the effective flow-front temperature and alter weld-line integrity. A material that fills a 1.5 mm wall section may still fail in a multi-gate tool if the weld-line impact retention is below the product specification. Production-scale validation should use specimens cut from molded parts and tested under ISO 527-2 and ASTM D256 conditions; laboratory plaques do not reproduce the frozen-in strain distribution of a hot-runner, multi-drop cavity. For PA-778, the manufacturer reports the grade as a high-flow injection material, but comparative fracture-energy data for direct transfer from PA-757 is limited; validation on actual tooling is required before substitution.
At melt temperatures above 250°C, the butadiene phase in PA-778 begins to form gel particles and surface gloss declines. Residence time above 6 min at 240°C raises yellowing and can generate black specks, especially in hot-runner drops with stagnant flow paths. Machines should be purged with a styrenic purge compound after stops longer than 10 min, and hot-runner manifolds should be inspected for dead spots. Nozzle melt temperature measured by an inserted pyrometer is maintained between 225°C and 250°C. Processors should avoid exceeding 260°C even for short periods; degradation liberates styrene vapor and can create delamination at the gate freeze region. The operational boundary is therefore not only a viscosity limit but also a thermal-degradation threshold. When high injection speed is required, it is preferable to increase injection velocity rather than elevate melt temperature beyond the upper limit.
Pre-drying is performed in a desiccant dryer at 80°C to 85°C for 2 h to 4 h until the moisture content is below 0.1 wt%. Moisture above 0.1 wt% hydrolyzes nitrile groups and produces splay on molded components. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, dryer dew-point monitoring is required; a dew point of -30°C or lower is recommended. Barrel temperature profiles for high-flow ABS such as PA-778 are typically set at 210°C at the feed throat, 230°C in the compression zone, and 240°C at the nozzle. Mold surface temperature is controlled between 40°C and 70°C. Lower mold temperatures reduce cycle time but increase frozen-in orientation and reduce surface gloss. Back pressure is set between 0.5 MPa and 1.0 MPa to stabilize screw recovery without overheating the melt. Injection velocity is adjusted to fill the cavity in 0.5 s to 1.5 s for thin-wall parts; gate velocities above 500 mm/s can create jetting and surface score lines unless the gate land length is increased or a tab gate is used. General-purpose screws with L/D 20 to 22 and compression ratio 2.5:1 to 3.0:1 are suitable for PA-778. Clamp force is determined by projected area; cavity pressure during packing for ABS is normally 30 MPa to 50 MPa, corresponding to 3 kN to 5 kN per cm² of projected area.
For PA-778, the critical processing window is defined by the balance between mold-filling pressure and thermal degradation. The grade is used when thin-wall fill pressure is a constraint; however, the high-flow architecture does not remove the need for adequate gate geometry and venting. Mold venting depth for ABS should be maintained at 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm. Insufficient venting leads to burn marks at the flow front and raises cavity pressure. The table below lists the principal standard methods used to characterize PA-778 and the units reported on typical technical data sheets.
| Standard | Property | Typical reporting unit |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 1133-1 | Melt volume-flow rate, 220°C, 10 kg | cm³/10 min |
| ISO 527-2 | Tensile stress at yield | MPa |
| ISO 178 | Flexural modulus | MPa |
| ISO 179-1/1eA | Notched Charpy impact, 23°C | kJ/m² |
| ASTM D256 | Notched Izod impact, 23°C, 3.2 mm specimen | J/m |
| ASTM D648 | Heat deflection temperature, 1.82 MPa | °C |
| ISO 306 | Vicat softening temperature, 50 N | °C |
| ASTM D955 | Mold shrinkage, 24 h after molding | % |
The practical pressure requirement for PA-778 cannot be determined from melt flow rate alone. In-mold pressure sensors should be used to confirm that cavity pressure at gate freeze remains between 30 MPa and 50 MPa. Machine hydraulic pressure readings overestimate the pressure available at the flow front due to nozzle, sprue, runner, and gate losses. When transferring a mold from PA-757 to PA-778, operators often observe lower hydraulic pressure demand at the same fill time; however, the reduction is geometry-dependent and must be verified by sensor data rather than inferred from machine settings. Gate dimensions should not be reduced below 0.8 mm for a 2.5 mm wall or 0.5 mm for a 1.5 mm wall. Smaller gates freeze prematurely and reduce packing effectiveness, producing sink marks and dimensional drift.
Material substitution should begin with a comparison of melt flow rate, tensile stress at yield, notched impact, and heat deflection temperature. PA-757 is the widely referenced general-purpose POLYLAC grade. In tools with wall thickness above 2.5 mm, PA-757 may be preferred when broad processing latitude and lower material cost are more important than fill-pressure reduction. PA-778 is substituted when the same tool produces short shots at acceptable melt temperatures or when the flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio exceeds 150:1. The higher flow of PA-778 can lower injection pressure by 10% to 20% relative to a lower-flow grade in the same tool, but the exact reduction is geometry-dependent and should be confirmed through in-mold pressure sensors rather than machine hydraulic pressure alone. Because high flow often reduces melt strength, PA-778 is not automatically suited for blow molding or profile extrusion; PA-747 remains the POLYLAC grade for extrusion-grade melt strength. PA-777D and related heat-resistant grades are specified only when the required heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa exceeds 95°C; PA-778 is not a heat-resistant formulation. If a UL 94 V-0 listing is required, a flame-retardant POLYLAC grade such as PA-765 or PA-766 is specified, because standard high-flow ABS is generally rated only as HB at 1.5 mm. Compliance for food-contact use, if required, is evaluated under 21 CFR 177.1020; the specific PA-778 grade and color concentrate must be selected for that end-use. Electrical and electronic applications are typically assessed against RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH substances of very high concern lists, with supplier certificates required per lot.
Dimensional control in PA-778 follows the same shrinkage behavior as other unfilled ABS injection grades. Mold shrinkage measured according to ISO 294-4 is generally 0.4% to 0.7% for unfilled ABS, but exact values depend on gate design, wall thickness, packing pressure, and flow direction. Regrind levels up to 20 wt% are common for non-appearance structures if the regrind is dried and screened. High-gloss fascias are usually limited to 10 wt% first-pass regrind because repeated heat histories increase yellowing and surface haze. The non-return valve clearance should be maintained below 0.1 mm; higher clearances create inconsistent cushion and short-shot variation. PA-778 should not be contaminated with polyoxymethylene or polyvinyl chloride purge compounds; these materials generate acid gases when heated and can degrade the ABS phase. Direct blending with polycarbonate is not recommended without dedicated ABS/PC compatibilization and higher processing temperatures; attempts to dry-blend on a general-purpose ABS machine can cause layered delamination and unstable melt pressure.
