On upper dashboard carriers and HVAC trim, solar soak temperatures routinely exceed 85 °C at part surface, while grain-level dimensional stability must remain within ±0.25 mm across a 400 mm span. PA-777E processed at barrel set points of 230–250 °C and a mold temperature of 60–80 °C provides a balance of high-heat deflection and high-surface-gloss required for Class A interior trim. Hot-runner tooling must maintain a gate drop temperature below 255 °C to prevent silver streaking from volatile degradation; field data from long-run automotive interior tools indicate gloss reduction on textured VDI 24 surfaces when mold temperature falls below 50 °C. Compounding uses 100 phr PA-777E combined with 1.0–2.0 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.1–0.3 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant package, and no more than 15 wt% regrind from the same lot; use of mixed-color regrind above this threshold increases risk of jetting and gate blush. Production is conducted on 500–1,200 t clamping force reciprocating-screw injection molding machines with L/D 20:1–24:1, compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1, backpressure 0.5–1.5 MPa, injection speed 30–80 mm/s, and packing pressure 60–80 MPa; pre-drying in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40 °C to -30 °C at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture below 0.05 wt% is mandatory when ambient RH exceeds 55%. Compliance is governed by FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795 for interior flammability, with emissions and fogging verified on finished parts per VDA 270 B3 and DIN 75201 B; raw resin data do not certify final-part VOC performance. Terminal parts include instrument panel trim, center console side covers, door panel upper rolls, and HVAC vent assemblies.
In scooter fairing tools, injection-molded parts survive 300–600 h xenon-arc exposure under ISO 4892-2 cycle A and must retain acceptable surface appearance after 500 h. Unpainted PA-777E is serviceable for shaded or short-lifetime components, but unpainted Class A surfaces requiring multi-year gloss retention should specify a UV-stabilized masterbatch or an opaque two-coat topcoat; without such protection, surface chalking is commonly observed in xenon-arc testing, though published data for this specific grade/color configuration is limited. The compounding formulation uses 100 phr PA-777E, 1.0–3.0 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer-based masterbatch, 2.0–4.0 wt% pigment masterbatch, and ≤10 wt% regrind from unpainted runner scrap; internal mold release above 0.2 wt% is avoided when painting is planned because it reduces adhesion after plasma treatment, and amine-based antistatic additives are avoided for the same reason. Injection molding is run on clamp force 350–800 t machines with barrel temperatures 240–260 °C and mold temperatures 70–90 °C; post-mold painting uses plasma corona at 2–4 kW followed by a 15–25 µm dry-film two-component acrylic topcoat. Compliance for two-wheeler components requires REACH Annex XVII substance restrictions and visible-surface criteria assessed per ISO 4628-6 after artificial weathering; final paint adhesion is evaluated by cross-cut ISO 2409. Terminal part types include scooter side fairings, front fenders, rear mudguards, and under-seat body panels.
Within canister vacuum cleaner motor compartments, localized shell temperatures of 70–90 °C impose thermal aging conditions that reduce impact strength in standard ABS grades. PA-777E is used in non-flame-retarded thermoplastic housings where the final part must meet glow-wire requirements at 650 °C per IEC 60695-2-11; the grade does not provide V-0 performance, and if a 750 °C or 850 °C glow-wire certification is required on thicknesses below 2.0 mm, a flame-retarded ABS or PC/ABS should replace PA-777E. Formulation comprises 100 phr PA-777E, 0.5–1.5 wt% antistatic masterbatch, 2.0–4.0 wt% titanium dioxide pigment, and ≤20 wt% clean regrind; non-drying color masterbatch above 4.0 wt% reduces melt flow and increases short-shot tendency in vented molds. Molding is conducted with melt temperature 220–240 °C, mold temperature 50–70 °C, and wall thickness 2.0–3.0 mm; processing below 50 °C mold temperature increases knit-line visibility at motor vent openings. IEC 60335-1 clause 30 governs heat and fire resistance; material substitution requires full appliance testing because raw-material UL 746B relative thermal index values do not certify the final electrical product. Terminal components include canister vacuum motor housings, steam mop shells, and floor tool connectors.
When cordless drill motor caps and charger bases must combine low-temperature drop impact with dimensional tolerance after thermal aging at 90 °C, PA-777E is specified as an unfilled high-heat ABS alternative to general-purpose ABS. For unfilled PA-777E, the practical wall-thickness range is 2.5–4.0 mm; below 2.0 mm, ejection deformation and gate blush become process-negative. The blend is 100 phr PA-777E, 0.5–2.0 wt% color concentrate, 0.2–0.5 wt% internal mold release only where painting or bonding is not required, and ≤15 wt% regrind. Injection molding uses barrel set points 230–250 °C and mold temperature 60–80 °C; packing pressure 60–80 MPa with hold time 4–6 s is required to avoid sink marks at boss locations. Compliance is evaluated under IEC 62841-1 for hand-held motor-operated tools and UL 746C for polymeric enclosure performance; relative thermal index is assigned according to UL 746B and must be confirmed on the final grade and thickness. If a glass-fiber reinforced skeleton is required to reduce creep at 90 °C sustained load, PA-777E should not be used; a reinforced PA or PC/ABS is the appropriate substitution. Terminal products include cordless drill clamshell housings, oscillating tool handles, charger bases, and benchtop tool guards.
Inside laser printer fuser sections, surrounding plastics are exposed to 60–85 °C intermittent radiant heat; unfilled PA-777E is applied to non-contact air ducts and side frames where HDT at 1.82 MPa measured per ISO 75-2/Ae must exceed the rise in internal ambient temperature by a safe margin. The formulation uses 100 phr PA-777E, 0.5–1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.3–0.8 wt% silicone-based lubricant masterbatch, and ≤20 wt% regrind from unpainted trim. Injection molding of 1.5–2.5 mm wall sections is performed at melt temperature 220–240 °C and mold temperature 40–60 °C; hot tip gates below 0.8 mm diameter are avoided to prevent high-shear discoloration. Compliance follows IEC 62368-1 for ICT/AV equipment fire enclosures and UL 746C; resin identification is marked per ISO 11469 as >ABS<. Terminal part types include printer side covers, scanner housings, paper tray guides, and fuser-zone air ducts.
For low-voltage relay bodies and terminal shroud components, PA-777E provides a service-temperature band of 65–80 °C, where standard ABS parts show unacceptable softening and dimensional relaxation as determined by Vicat softening temperature per ISO 306 B50. The material is suitable only for enclosures requiring IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire performance at 650 °C at 2.0 mm; if glow-wire testing at 750 °C or 850 °C or UL 94 V-0 at 0.8 mm is specified, a flame-retardant grade must be substituted. Compounding uses 100 phr PA-777E, 0.5–1.0 wt% antistatic masterbatch, and ≤15 wt% regrind; conductive carbon black addition above 1.5 wt% is not recommended because it degrades surface resistivity uniformity. Processing on 80–150 t injection molding machines with melt temperature 225–245 °C and mold temperature 50–70 °C yields acceptable weld-line strength at gate locations. Standard compliance includes IEC 60664-1 for creepage and clearance design and REACH Annex XVII; final electrical safety is tested on the assembled component, not on raw resin. Terminal products include relay bases, terminal shroud covers, and low-voltage switchgear interior non-flame-class components.

The melt has a broader molecular weight distribution than high-impact PA-717C and is not monodisperse. The dispersed polybutadiene phase gives the resin moderate solvent swell during pre-etch conditioning. Because PA-777E is opaque, the butadiene domains remain discrete rather than refractive-index-matched. The lower elastomer content compared with PA-717C reduces melt elasticity and improves detail reproduction in grained or microtextured mold surfaces, but it also lowers low-temperature ductility if molded under cold conditions.
Material handling before melt processing follows the same hygroscopic requirement as other ABS grades. Pellets are dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to reach ≤0.05% residual moisture. Hopper residence time above 4 h in uncontrolled humidity can reabsorb enough water to produce silver streaking and surface porosity at melt temperatures above 220 °C. A single-stage reciprocating screw with 20:1–24:1 L/D, compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1, and low-shear general-purpose metering section is adequate. High-speed fill of 80–120 mm/s is required to prevent premature freeze-off at gate vestiges in 1.2 mm ribs. Barrel set points from rear to nozzle are typically 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 240 °C, with mold temperature held at 60–80 °C. High mold temperature is not optional for plating grades because the rubber phase must remain ductile enough to etch, but mold temperatures above 85 °C extend cycle time without proportional adhesion benefit.
Hot-runner valve gates require short needle strokes and positive shut-off. Long valve pins inside large unheated gates can generate dead spots where residence time exceeds 15 min at 240 °C, producing yellowing and plate-up pinholes. Screw recovery speed above 120 rpm can generate shear heating of 5–10 °C over set temperature, shifting viscosity and creating short shots or flash when clamp force margin is below 10% of nominal. Screw decompression should not exceed 5 mm on medium-size machines because the low melt viscosity tends to drool at open nozzles.
Within the POLYLAC portfolio, PA-757 is the general-purpose medium-flow grade with balanced impact and surface reproduction. PA-709 is the high-flow grade for shorter cycle and thinner walls, but low-temperature toughness and chrome thermal-cycle durability are reduced. PA-777E occupies the plating-specific region between them. Compared with PA-757 at equal barrel temperatures, PA-777E produces lower filling pressure and longer spiral-flow length, but it freezes more quickly at abrupt wall-thickness changes. Compared with PA-709, PA-777E retains a dispersed rubber-particle-size distribution compatible with chromic-acid etch depth of 1–3 µm and electroless nickel coverage. In plated parts, PA-709 often yields higher filling efficiency but lower thermal-shock resistance after chrome deposition because the elastomer phase volume is smaller. PA-777E is therefore specified when thermal shock from −40 °C to 85 °C must be passed after electroplating. Published data for direct comparative peel strength among these grades is limited; converters should run a three-lot comparison using the same etchant bath and activator concentration before changing source.
Against mass-polymerization ABS grades from other producers, PA-777E benefits from controlled rubber particle formation before melt blending. Emulsion-polymerized polybutadiene particles in the 0.2–0.5 µm range give more uniform etch pits after oxidation than bulk-polymerized ABS with low rubber content. Over-etching of coarse rubber particles above 0.8 µm can leave deep cavities that weaken the plated skin. The grade is therefore not directly interchangeable with a commodity high-flow ABS if the downstream plate-up line is tuned to narrow pit-depth distribution.
Plating on PA-777E begins with mold-surface preparation rather than solely with resin properties. The molded skin must be free of silicone mold release, wax, or unsaturated processing oil. A typical sequence uses chromic acid 380–420 g/L with sulfuric acid 180–220 g/L at 60–70 °C for 5–15 min to oxidize and dissolve polybutadiene domains, producing microcavities. The part is then neutralized, treated with colloidal palladium-tin, accelerated, and processed through electroless nickel or copper strike followed by electrolytic copper, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, microporous nickel where required, and chromium. Adhesion of the electroless deposit depends on etch pit density and depth. If etch temperature drops below 55 °C or sulfuric acid concentration falls below 150 g/L, the surface remains too smooth and plate-up peel strength can fall below 0.4 kN/m. Over-etching above 18 min may dissolve too much surface elastomer, leaving a weak boundary layer. Peel adhesion is measured on 40 µm electrolytic copper deposits according to ISO 2819:2018 or ASTM B533-85. Thermal shock and humidity exposure at 85 °C/85% RH for 168 h are then used to confirm plate-up durability.
In multi-gate bezels or trim parts, weld lines are the first regions to show plate-up cracking after thermal shock. Fountain flow at a weld line orients rubber domains parallel to the knit plane and depletes surface elastomer relative to the bulk. Raising melt temperature to 235–240 °C and mold temperature to 75–80 °C improves weld-line knitting, but raises degradation risk if residence time exceeds 20 min. Production trials on 120-ton electric injection molding machines with 8-cavity tools have shown that moving the gate to place the weld line outside the visible class-A plated surface is more effective than raising melt temperature alone. The etch bath temperature window should be held within ±2.5 °C of the set point because etch rate changes by approximately 0.1 µm/min per degree Celsius in the operating range, creating measurable lot-to-lot peel variance.
Deterioration during melt conversion begins as yellowing and an increase in melt flow rate due to chain scission. The boundary is economic rather than abrupt. At barrel temperatures above 250 °C, the styrene-acrylonitrile phase degrades through depolymerization and oxidative attack of the butadiene fraction. Extruder purge after polycarbonate or flame-retardant PC/ABS must be thorough because residual polycarbonate at 0.5–1.0% can raise haze and alter plate-up appearance. Nylon and PVC residues are harder to purge and may corrode check rings. Avoid amine-based antistats and some hindered amine light stabilizers in masterbatches because they can interfere with wetting of the etched surface after chromic acid treatment. Aromatic phosphate flame retardants can reduce adhesion and should be tested with the full plating line before lot approval.
Incoming inspection for visible electroplated parts should measure melt flow rate and notched Charpy impact on every lot. A shift of 3 g/10 min in melt flow rate can indicate regrind contamination or wrong-grade substitution. Differential scanning calorimetry at 20 °C/min under nitrogen should show the styrene-acrylonitrile glass transition near 105–110 °C, with the polybutadiene transition below −60 °C, though exact values depend on heating rate and specimen history. Regrind use in plating grades is normally limited to 20% by weight because chrome adhesion on regrind-rich parts can become less uniform. If regrind is hot-stretched during secondary grinding and not blended with sufficient virgin rubber, weld-line peel can increase after thermal shock.
PA-777E in standard natural form is assessed against the substance-restriction requirements of the European Union RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and the candidate-list transparency obligations of REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Article 33. Typical electrical enclosure evaluations report an IEC 60695-2-12:2021 glow-wire flammability index of 650 °C at 2.0 mm thickness in natural color, but the final approval depends on the colorant package, regrind content, and part thickness. PA-777E is not a flame-retardant compound. V-0 classifications should be assigned to CHIMEI PA-765 or a PC/ABS product unless an external agency has tested the PA-777E formulation with a specific additive masterbatch.

Switchover from PA-757 to PA-777E on the same tool usually requires lowering the hydraulic hold pressure by 8–12% because PA-777E fills the cavity with lower pressure. Pack and hold time should remain similar or be extended by 0.2–0.5 s to compensate for faster gate freeze. Melt cushion control is critical. A cushion of 3–5 mm is recommended; losing cushion below 1 mm can produce short shots, while above 8 mm increases residence time. Nozzle temperature should be controlled independently. Reverse-taper nozzles with internally heated tips reduce stringing, and nozzle contact force above 6 kN prevents drool-related short shots at high injection-pressure settings. When redrying is necessary after storage at relative humidity above 60%, use 80 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant system. Avoid static air oven drying because localized overheating can cause pellet agglomeration and inconsistent moisture content across the hopper charge.
