In consumer audio-video equipment and flat-panel display applications, PA-777D is evaluated principally under IEC 62368-1:2023 Clause 6, which addresses fire hazards in audio/video, information, and communication technology equipment. The material classification used in end-product submissions is typically UL 94 V-0 at 2.1 mm thickness; component evaluations may reference IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire tests only when the OEM specifies unattended-equipment criteria for exterior surfaces. Formulation loading for this segment is neat PA-777D at 100 wt% of the polymer matrix, with no downstream addition of brominated flame retardant or antimony trioxide synergist at the molding machine. Color concentrates for bezel and rear cover colors are limited to 1.0–2.0 wt% and must be halogen-free to avoid shifting vertical burn performance. Regrind from the same grade may be introduced at up to 10 wt% for non-appearance surfaces; higher recycled content is not recommended without re-testing at minimum wall thickness because flame-retardant loading is not separable from the carrier resin. Downstream processing is high-speed injection molding of flat-panel bezels and rear covers, typically on 600–1,300 t clamp-force machines with hot runner systems and sequential valve gates to reduce weld-line visibility near VESA mounting bosses. Melt temperature is held between 190°C and 230°C, mold temperature between 40°C and 60°C, and screw speed below 80 rpm to limit shear heating of the flame-retardant package. At relative humidity above 60%, pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 3–4 h is mandatory; residual moisture must remain below 0.05 wt% to prevent splay and surface silver streaking. Terminal product types include LED television bezels, monitor rear housings, soundbar enclosures, set-top box covers, and display interface module shrouds.
Power adapter enclosures for external AC-DC converters rated 5–65 W are molded from PA-777D when the fire enclosure must demonstrate UL 94 V-0 at the minimum as-molded wall thickness of 1.5–2.1 mm. The applicable end-product safety assessment is IEC 62368-1:2023 Clause 6, and component glow-wire testing may reference IEC 60695-2-11:2021 where the equipment is classified as unattended. In this segment, the formulation ratio is neat PA-777D at 100 wt% of the polymer matrix; processor-added anti-dust or color masterbatch is limited to ≤1.0 wt%, and only UL-recognized masterbatches are used because certain organic pigments can increase afterflame time by interfering with the antimony-halogen free-radical quenching mechanism. Regrind from the same grade is capped at 10 wt%; mixed-ABS regrind is excluded because press-side dilution of flame-retardant loading cannot be controlled. The production route is thin-wall injection molding on 90–350 t reciprocating-screw machines with closed-loop injection velocity profiling. Screw L/D is typically 20:1–25:1, compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1, and the barrel profile is set at 190°C rear, 210°C center, 220°C front, with a nozzle at 210°C; mold temperature is kept between 40°C and 60°C. A processing conflict arises from the flame-retardant package: residence time above 8 min at melt temperature or localized shear heating above 240°C can deposit a brominated plate-out on the cavity surface and cause gate blush. To reduce this, the screw tip buffer is maintained at 2–4 mm, back pressure is limited to 0.3–0.6 MPa, and hot runner manifold temperatures are not allowed to exceed 230°C. Terminal products include USB-C wall chargers, desktop power bricks, open-frame power supply covers, and exchangeable AC plug housings.
Because network switch chassis, router front panels, and optical network terminal faceplates must reconcile thin-wall flow with UL 94 V-0 burn performance, PA-777D is specified where the fire enclosure supports system-level evaluation under IEC 62368-1:2023 Clause 6 and UL 94 V-0 at 2.1 mm. Telecom operator qualification may also reference GR-63-CORE fire-spread requirements; material V-0 classification alone does not certify NEBS compliance, and the full chassis must be tested as an assembly. The recommended compounding ratio at the injection plant is 100 wt% neat PA-777D. Conductive carbon black or antistatic masterbatches are not incorporated by dry blending; if electrostatic dissipation is required, carbon-filled or nickel-coated secondary coatings are applied post-molding rather than by mixing conductive particles into PA-777D, because conductive fillers can lower comparative tracking index and alter UL 94 burn characteristics. Color concentrate is held at 1.0–2.0 wt%, and regrind is limited to ≤10 wt% from same-grade runners and sprues. The downstream manufacturing sequence includes injection molding on 120–650 t machines, followed by CNC routing of ventilation slots, heat-staking of metal shield inserts, and selective electroless copper-nickel plating for EMI suppression. ABS-specific pre-plating is applicable; the plating line uses chromic acid etch at 65–70°C for 10–15 min to create microporosity before palladium-tin activation. Molding conditions require a melt temperature of 190–225°C and mold temperature of 40–60°C; for parts with wall-thickness transitions from 1.2 mm faceplate sections to 4.0 mm boss sections, packing pressure is staged from 70–100 MPa to 30–50 MPa over 3–6 s to prevent sink marks without over-packing burn. Terminal products include rack-mount switch front panels, router housings, Wi-Fi access point covers, GPON/ONT faceplates, and small-cell radio radomes.
For uninterruptible power supply battery trays and removable energy storage cassette frames, PA-777D is specified only as the secondary polymeric enclosure, not as primary cell containment. The controlling battery system standards are IEC 62619:2022 for industrial cells and batteries, UL 1973:2022 for stationary battery systems, and, where relevant, IEC 62133-2:2017 for portable sealed secondary cells. Material-level flammability is demonstrated by UL 94 V-0 at 2.1 mm; hot-wire ignition may be reported under IEC 60695-2-20:2021 when the application requires a comparative ignition metric. Formulation ratio: PA-777D is used neat at 100 wt%; no regrind is permitted for enclosures that fasten live busbar retainers because lot-to-lot impact retention is specified by the battery pack designer. PVC wire insulation debris or chlorinated contamination must be excluded from the regrind stream; chlorinated residues can accelerate degradation of the flame-retardant package and produce black specks. The downstream process is thicker-section injection molding of 2.5–3.0 mm walls on 350–1,000 t machines. The mold is sequenced with two-stage injection to push the flow front through cassette side walls at 60–90 mm/s before a low-velocity final fill of 15–25 mm/s to avoid jetting at the battery terminal window. Mold temperature is raised to 50–70°C for dimensional stability, and cooling time is extended by 20–30% relative to a 2.0 mm wall. Pre-drying at 80°C for 4 h is mandatory; moisture above 0.04 wt% reduces strength at boss-to-wall junctions under IEC 62133 vibration profiles. Terminal products include UPS battery doors, removable energy storage cassette frames, portable power station outer shells, and telecom battery backup trays.
Direct substitution of PA-777D for glass-filled PC/ABS in electrical installation housings requires verification of wall stiffness, glow-wire response, and impact retention. The governing component standards are IEC 60670-1:2015 for boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories, with flammability testing per IEC 60695-2-11:2021 and material classification under UL 94 V-0 at 2.1 mm. For outdoor or damp-location boxes, Ingress Protection testing to IEC 60529:2013 is performed on the finished assembly, not on the raw resin. Formulation loading is 100 wt% neat PA-777D; glass fiber is not added at the press because the unfilled grade is not formulated to wet out or distribute short glass fibers. Where increased flexural modulus is required, a separate glass-filled grade is selected rather than blending glass fiber into PA-777D. Processor-added masterbatches are limited to 1.0–2.0 wt%, and regrind is limited to ≤10 wt% from same-grade runners. Processing differs from unfilled general-purpose ABS because the flame-retardant package narrows the usable melt-temperature window: melt temperature is held between 190°C and 220°C, and zone temperatures above 230°C increase the risk of plate-out on cavity vents and ejector pins. Mold temperature is set at 40–60°C; below 40°C, surface gloss variability increases and weld lines around knockout openings become more visible. Because PA-777D is unfilled ABS, direct replacement of glass-filled PC/ABS with modulus above 3,500 MPa may require increasing rib thickness or adding gussets to maintain creep resistance under screw-terminal torque. Terminal products include surface-mount back boxes, flush-mounted wall boxes, blanking plates, DIN rail enclosures, and circuit-breaker cover strips.
Point-of-sale terminal front frames, PIN pad housings, and card reader bezels are injection-molded from PA-777D when the fire enclosure must satisfy IEC 62368-1:2023 Clause 6 and UL 94 V-0 at 2.1 mm. Physical-security requirements for payment terminals may be evaluated under PCI PTS POI v6; however, that evaluation governs tamper resistance, not polymer flammability, and material selection is only one input into the certified assembly. The formulation ratio is neat PA-777D at 100 wt%; color concentrates for front frames are limited to 1.0–2.0 wt%, and regrind is limited to ≤10 wt% for non-contact surfaces. No external chemical foaming agents, nucleating agents, or impact modifiers are added because PA-777D is supplied as a ready-to-mold compound and additive dilution alters the UL 94 vertical burn rating in thin sections. Production includes thin-wall injection molding on 80–250 t machines, followed by optical quality inspection for gate blush, weld lines, and carbonized specks. Decorative in-mold decoration or in-mold labeling may be used for front panels; the film insertion process requires a mold temperature at the upper limit of 55–60°C to prevent film wash-out, while melt temperature is held at 200–230°C. After molding, bosses are ultrasonically welded or heat-staked for tamper-evident labels, and micro-louvered card slots are machined into the bezel after molding to avoid filling pressure spikes. Terminal products include POS terminal front frames, PIN pad covers, card reader bezels, receipt printer top covers, and payment docking station shells.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-777D is a plating-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied by Chi Mei Corporation for injection-moulded components that subsequently undergo electroless and electrolytic metal deposition. The grade is formulated with a controlled butadiene rubber particle-size distribution to support uniform chromic-acid microetching before palladium-tin activation. Published typical density is 1.04 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1. Melt-flow behaviour is characterised under ISO 1133-1 at 220°C with a 10 kg load as 23 g/10 min. Principal uses include automotive exterior trim, radiator grilles, mirror housings, sanitary fittings, and appliance handles, where the plated surface is exposed to thermal cycling, humidity, and mechanical contact.
Plating-grade ABS is differentiated from general-purpose ABS by the morphology of the butadiene phase and the molecular-weight distribution of the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer. In CHIMEI PA-777D, the butadiene particles are controlled to a size range that produces a dense, uniform micropore network after chromic-sulfuric etching. General-purpose injection grades such as CHIMEI PA-757 are not optimised for this etch step; their broader rubber particle-size distribution can generate non-uniform etch depths and increase the risk of plate skip at gate areas and flow lines. For exterior automotive components, adhesion after thermal cycling is commonly evaluated under ASTM B553, while peel adhesion is measured under ASTM B533. Comparative defect data between plating grades and general-purpose grades is often proprietary and not published.
In acid-copper plating adhesion, the chromic-sulfuric etch oxidises butadiene from the surface while leaving the styrene-acrylonitrile phase largely intact. The resulting cavities provide mechanical interlocking sites for electroless metal deposition. Process conditions are conventionally 60–70°C for 5–15 min. The etched part is neutralised, catalysed with palladium-tin chloride, accelerated, and coated with an electroless nickel or copper strike. Electrolytic copper thickness is typically 20–40 µm before nickel and chromium layers. Industrial specifications for exterior automotive components commonly require minimum peel strength of 0.8 kgf/cm under ASTM B533; part-specific requirements vary with geometry and thermal exposure.
The following values are typical for natural injection-moulded resin and do not constitute specification limits. Values may shift after electroplating or heat ageing.

The combination of 20 kJ/m² notched Izod impact at 23°C and 91°C heat deflection temperature means moulded parts can withstand plating bath temperatures up to approximately 70°C without gross distortion. Continuous service above 85°C under mechanical load should be verified by part-specific testing because published creep data for plated configurations is limited.
Pre-drying in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80°C for 2–4 hours is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. Residual moisture above 0.02% by weight may produce splay and surface defects that become visible after electroplating. Barrel temperature profiles should be set between 190°C and 240°C, with the nozzle at 210–240°C; melt temperature measured by needle pyrometer should remain below 250°C. When barrel residence time exceeds 5 min at upper temperature, thermal degradation produces yellowing, smoke, and loss of notched impact strength due to SAN matrix chain scission. Mould temperature is typically 40–70°C. Higher mould temperatures within this range reduce frozen-in stress and improve plate adhesion, but increase cycle time and may cause sink marks over thick rib intersections. Injection speed is set to achieve a fill time of 1–2 s for nominal wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.0 mm; fill time below 0.8 s can generate gate-area shear heating and localised rubber particle orientation, which may cause plate peel after thermal cycling under ASTM B553. Hydraulic injection pressure is generally 70–120 MPa on 800–3000 kN clamp machines, depending on flow length and wall thickness.
For plated parts, gate location and weld-line position are inseparable from etch uniformity. Edge gates with land length 0.5–1.0 mm and gate thickness 50–70% of part wall thickness reduce residual stress near the gate. Cold runner systems should use full-round or trapezoidal runners; hot runners should avoid dead-volume zones above 230°C because degraded ABS can contaminate the microporous etch surface and cause electroplating skips. Mould release agents containing silicone or metal stearates must be excluded because they interfere with chromic-acid wetting and palladium-tin adsorption.
On plated ABS, adhesion failures occur when differential etch depth creates weak boundary layers at flow lines, weld lines, and gate remnants. PA-777D is formulated to reduce this variability by maintaining a narrow butadiene particle-size distribution and lower melt viscosity than extrusion-grade ABS. The chromic-sulfuric etch bath is normally operated at 60–70°C with 300–400 g/L chromic acid and 300–400 g/L sulfuric acid; higher acid ratios or longer immersion times can over-etch the SAN phase and produce a powdery surface. The optimum etch time depends on part geometry and moulded stress: flat plaques may require 5–10 min, while deep-draw parts with high orientation may require 10–15 min. If etch time exceeds 15 min, surface roughness and micro-cracking can reduce peel adhesion below requirement. After etching, neutralisation in 20–50 g/L sodium bisulfite or an equivalent reducing agent removes hexavalent chromium residues; inadequate rinsing causes passivation of the palladium-tin catalyst and skip plating. Plating lines typically specify a minimum electroless nickel thickness of 0.25–0.5 µm to ensure conductivity for subsequent electrolytic copper.
Compared with CHIMEI PA-757 general-purpose ABS, PA-777D carries a narrower flow window but is less prone to plate skip on complex moulded surfaces because the SAN molecular weight and rubber-phase morphology are controlled for etch resistance. High-impact ABS grades with larger rubber particles, including CHIMEI PA-747 series products, offer greater low-temperature notched impact strength but are more difficult to etch uniformly; the larger butadiene domains form deeper pits that may retain chromium residues and reduce adhesion after thermal cycling. PA-777D is therefore selected for plated parts where dimensional stability, plate adhesion, and appearance after thermal cycling are more important than maximum low-temperature ductility.
| Regulatory area | Standard or designation | Typical condition for PA-777D |
| RoHS restricted substances | Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 | Declared below maximum concentration values for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, DEHP, BBP, DIBP |
| REACH SVHC | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 candidate list | Supplier declaration required per lot; no SVHC above 0.1% w/w for standard natural grade |
| Flammability | UL 94 | HB at specified thickness |
| Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons | AfPS GS 2019:01 PAK | Testing required for consumer articles; standard natural ABS generally below category 1 limits |
The grade is not inherently food-contact certified under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020; end-users must perform migration testing for specific plated configurations because metal layers and plating chemicals change food-contact status. Published data for specific plated configurations is limited.
Operational boundaries for PA-777D include continuous-use temperature below 85°C for plated assemblies under mechanical load, unless part-specific heat deflection testing under ISO 75-2/Ae demonstrates otherwise. The material should not be blended with general-purpose ABS regrind above 20% by weight if the regrind contains mould release agents or colourants that alter surface energy; such contamination can reduce chromic-acid wetting and produce electroplating skips. Contact with ketone-based solvents, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons should be avoided because stress cracking accelerates in plated parts with high moulded-in stress. Annealing of moulded parts at 70–80°C for 1–2 h before plating may be required when wall thickness exceeds 3.2 mm to relieve internal stress and prevent etch-induced warpage.
