Application of CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-764B

In external AC/DC adapter housings rated up to 65 W, PA-764B is fed as virgin pellet only after desiccant drying to a residual moisture content below 0.02 wt%. The polymer is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer carrying a brominated flame-retardant package with an antimony trioxide synergist. The exact bromine-to-antimony ratio is not disclosed in the SDS. Halogenated ABS systems of this type commonly operate with a bromine-to-antimony mass ratio between 2:1 and 4:1. The published UL yellow card for PA-764B normally lists UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm. Halogenated FR systems of this type release acidic decomposition species when the melt is overheated. The barrel temperature profile is therefore held between 190 °C and 220 °C, with the nozzle not exceeding 225 °C. Mould temperature is set from 45 °C to 60 °C. Gate design uses a tangential edge gate into the rear shell, not a direct gate into a visible surface. The two ultrasonically welded halves are designed with a shear joint width of 1.5 mm. Because ultrasonic welding can disturb the flame-retardant surface, the weld line area must be re-burn-tested on production welded specimens. Recyclate is limited to 20 wt% maximum. Higher levels often destroy the vertical burn rating. Processing lot acceptance uses UL 94 vertical burn bars at 1.5 mm and ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow rate checks at 220 °C/10 kg. Viscosity drift can indicate premature degradation. Finished adapters are evaluated under IEC 62368-1. The enclosure must meet both fire enclosure and electrical enclosure functions. No UL yellow card should be extrapolated to painted or metal-coated parts. Plating re-qualification is required. Terminal parts include laptop adapter lower shells, monitor external power supply enclosures, and single-port USB-C charger housings. The operational boundary is indoor use. PA-764B is not specified for outdoor UV exposure or contact with strong alkaline detergents.

Why Do Power Strip Housings Need CTI Verification Beyond UL 94 V-0?

Power strip enclosures fail by carbon tracking more often than by direct flame propagation in service. In a surge-protected socket strip, the live terminal carrier sits inside a flame-retardant ABS shell with brass contacts spaced by the polymer web. UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm does not predict conductive carbon paths across a contaminated surface. Comparative tracking index under IEC 60112 is the relevant measurement for this failure mode. For PA-764B, the exact CTI value must be obtained from the supplier’s published data. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and a CTI category should not be assumed from the UL yellow card alone. The enclosure is designed with a minimum creepage distance of 6.4 mm for reinforced insulation at 250 V AC, but the final spacing depends on the pollution degree and overvoltage category in IEC 62368-1. The mould fill pattern uses a single submarine gate on the rear wall to avoid visible gate vestige on the outlet face. Ribs for screw bosses are 3.0 mm thick and create sink if the mould temperature is below 55 °C. Antimony trioxide in the flame-retardant package is abrasive. Sprue bushings and gate inserts made from unhardened P20 steel show accelerated wear after 50,000 shots. The production process uses a 120-ton hydraulic press with a shot size at 60% of barrel capacity. Terminal outputs include rack power distribution units, floor surge strips, and travel socket adapters for indoor use.

Router and Set-Top Box Chassis—Vent Slit Burning, Gate Blush, and Heat Deflection Limits

Router chassis tooling runs are split between 2.0 mm top covers and 1.5 mm bottom shells. Vent slit arrays are cut into the lower shell to limit internal heatsink temperature. The slits create multiple thin ribs with a high surface-to-volume ratio. During the UL 94 vertical burn test, a thin rib can reach combustion temperature faster than a flat plaque. Therefore the supplier’s 1.5 mm rating is not automatically valid for ribs thinner than 1.0 mm. Moulders must make a burn bar with the same vent geometry. Heat deflection temperature is measured under ISO 75-2/Ae at 1.8 MPa. PA-764B belongs to an FR ABS class that is usually limited to internal heat loads below about 75 °C continuous. Areas directly above a system-on-chip heatsink require an air gap or polyamide standoff. Gate blush appears at the valve gate when the melt temperature is raised to improve flow. The preferred process keeps the hot-runner manifold at 220 °C and the valve pin dwell short. A direct edge gate with 2.5 mm diameter into the bottom shell avoids jetting and moves the weld line away from the vent array. The tool is an 8-cavity cold runner plate with runner diameter 4.0 mm. Terminal products are Wi-Fi router bottom housings, IPTV set-top boxes, and DOCSIS cable modem enclosures for indoor consumer networking.

Mould-filling simulation for a two-part handheld scanner dock identified a pressure-limited zone at the latch boss. PA-764B fills the 1.2 mm wall only when the melt front velocity remains above 200 mm/s. The dock is used as a charging cradle for barcode readers in logistics depots. The lower shell contains a pogo-pin carrier and a flat ribbon cable channel. Wall thickness is 1.2 mm at the side walls and 2.0 mm at the base. The mould uses a 4-cavity family layout with a sprue and trapezoidal runner system. The sprue and runner are reground and blended at 15 wt% maximum to preserve the UL 94 V-0 rating of the molded dock. The screw diameter is 25 mm with an L/D ratio of 22:1. Screw speed is capped at 60 rpm because adiabatic heating inside the barrel can exceed the set-point by 8–12 °C. A reverse-taper nozzle with a shut-off tip prevents drool from the brominated compound during mold open. The terminal product is an industrial scanning dock with a non-serviceable lithium-ion battery contact area. The assembly is rated for indoor dry environments only. Compliance follows UL 60950-1 legacy documentation or IEC 62368-1 for new designs.

When PA-764B Replaces PC/ABS in Electrical Panel Faceplates

Replacement of PC/ABS with PA-764B in an electrical panel faceplate is not a viscosity-driven drop-in. The substituted part is a wall-mounted dimmer body with a 2.5 mm wall and a 180 mm flow length. PA-764B fills the part at 200–215 °C. A typical PC/ABS may require 260–280 °C. The lower melt temperature reduces flatness deviation but also lowers heat deflection temperature. Impact performance is compared with notched Izod under ASTM D256-23 and Charpy under ISO 179-1/1eA. If the installation requires cold-climate impact resistance below −10 °C, PA-764B is not a sufficient substitute unless the part thickness is increased or an impact modifier is added. Any impact modifier addition must be re-tested for UL 94 V-0 because it may dilute the flame-retardant package. The faceplate surface is electrostatically painted after molding. Painting masks visible flow lines but changes the vertical burn performance. Painted plaques must be burned under UL 94 in the same thickness and paint film weight. The design uses 0.5% mold shrinkage compensation in the flow direction and 0.6% perpendicular to flow. Switch assembly compliance follows IEC 60669-1 or UL 20 depending on the export market. Terminal parts include indoor dimmer bodies, hotel room control panel frames, and modular switch surrounds. Published data for outdoor UV stability of PA-764B is limited. The grade is not recommended for exterior mounting without opaque UV-protective coating.

Charging Dock Enclosure Filling Patterns at 0.8 mm Nominal Wall

At 0.8 mm nominal wall, the charging dock shell enters the thin-wall regime where melt front solidification limits the effective flow length more than machine pressure. The part is a desktop wireless charging base with a top surface of 120 mm × 85 mm and a flow length/thickness ratio above 150:1. PA-764B is processed at the upper end of its published temperature window, 220–230 °C, to maintain a sufficiently low melt viscosity. Barrel residence time is held below 5 min. Longer residence at the upper temperature produces yellow-brown streaks near the gate and acidic odour. The mould requires split-line venting with a vent depth of 0.015–0.030 mm for ABS. Vacuum venting may be added if short-shots persist in the far corners. The gate is a fan gate of 5 mm width and 0.5 mm thickness placed on a non-visible lower edge. The weld line formed around the USB-C port is a flame weak point. Production validation burns UL 94 bars cut across the weld line, not only edge-gated plaques. The tooling strategy uses 60–70 °C mould temperature to reduce frozen-in stress. Terminal outputs are desktop wireless charging bases, smart speaker lower shells, and flush-mount USB charging modules for hotel desks. Compliance follows UL 94 V-0 at 0.8 mm only if the supplier’s yellow card covers that thickness. If the yellow card lists only 1.5 mm, a separate UL equivalence test is required for the thinner part.

On a 650-ton hydraulic press running telecommunication test instrument front panels, plate-out from the brominated flame-retardant package appears on the core side after 12 h of continuous operation. The front panel has a 3.0 mm wall and a 280 mm flow length. The press operates with a 40 mm screw and a shot weight of 250 g, at 40–70% of barrel capacity. Plate-out is observed as a greasy film on the core pins and is removed with a barrel purge compound. The problem worsens when screw speed exceeds 45 rpm or when the nozzle temperature is raised above 220 °C. The panel is used in indoor benchtop power supply housings and spectrum analyzer front covers. The part must pass UL 94 V-0 at 3.0 mm and IEC 61010-1 requirements for electrical test equipment. The screw and barrel combination uses a compression ratio of 2.5:1 and a non-return valve with hardened ring to resist wear from the mineral synergist. The gate is a sprue break into a cold runner, with no hot runner. The grade is not declared for food-contact compliance under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 and is not suited for medical device enclosures requiring ISO 10993 leachables. The terminal product is an unpainted indoor instrument panel, not rated for outdoor enclosures or food contact. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. Process validation must be performed on the actual press and mould combination.

    More Introduction

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-764B is categorised as an electroplating-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The grade is formulated around a bimodal polybutadiene particle-size distribution with controlled crosslink density; this architecture yields a uniform microporous surface after chromic acid etching while preserving the low-temperature impact and melt flow needed for large-area automotive trim. Manufacturer-published typical values for natural pellets include a density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ASTM D792, a melt flow rate of 18 g/10 min at 220°C and 10 kg load under ASTM D1238, tensile stress at yield of 43 MPa under ASTM D638, flexural modulus of 2260 MPa under ASTM D790, notched Izod impact at 23°C of 210 J/m under ASTM D256, and heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa of 85°C under ASTM D648. The product is used in injection-moulded components that receive electroplated copper/nickel/chromium stacks, including radiator grilles, wheel covers, badge bezels, speaker rings, and appliance trim. Relative to general-purpose ABS, PA-764B reduces internal lubricant and mould-release additive loading, because these additives can leave a passivating surface layer that interferes with palladium/tin activation. The core property block is summarised below; values are typical for natural pellets and should be compared with the lot-specific certificate of analysis because colourant and regrind additions alter flow and plate adhesion.

What Limits Adhesion Retention After Chromic Acid Etching?

Adhesion retention in electroplated PA-764B is governed by the selective oxidation of polybutadiene particles rather than bulk dissolution of the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. In a production etch bath containing 380–420 g/L chromic acid and 180–220 g/L sulfuric acid at 60–68°C, the butadiene-rich domains are preferentially attacked to create microcavities with diameters mainly between 0.2 µm and 1.0 µm. These cavities provide mechanical anchoring for the electroless deposit after sensitisation with tin chloride and activation with palladium chloride. If the etch temperature exceeds 70°C, or if immersion time extends beyond 15 min, the number of angular undercuts increases and the styrene-acrylonitrile boundary becomes oxidised, which reduces peel force. Peel adhesion is measured in accordance with ASTM B533; electroplating lines typically require a minimum peel strength of 0.9 kgf/cm for this grade after acid copper build and thermal conditioning, although the actual specification depends on stack thickness and acid copper plating current density. Thermal shock testing under ISO 2819 differentiates cohesive resin fracture from interfacial failure: blistering after three cycles between −30°C and 80°C indicates residual etch acid or trapped hydrogen at the resin–metal interface, while skip plating on gate-proximal ribs points to frozen surface layers or excessive mould-release migration.

Before the first heating cycle, PA-764B is dried to residual moisture below 0.05 wt%; above this boundary the hydrolysis of acrylonitrile sequences during melt conversion generates splay on polished surfaces and microvoids that become visible only after electroplating. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, open containers of regrind can reach 0.15–0.25 wt% moisture within 4 h. Desiccant-wheel dryers with dew point of −40°C or lower, air inlet temperature of 70–80°C, and residence time of 3–4 h are used for virgin material; batch-to-batch variation in residual moisture should be verified with a Karl Fischer titration apparatus rather than inferred from dryer setpoint. On a reciprocating-screw injection machine with 20:1–24:1 L/D general-purpose screw, barrel temperatures from rear to nozzle are commonly set at 210°C, 225°C, 230°C, and 235°C, while nozzle temperature is held at 230–245°C. Melt temperatures above 260°C initiate polybutadiene oxidation and produce yellow-brown streaks, a measurable reduction in notched Izod impact, and higher plate-out on mould vents. Screw speed is maintained between 50 min⁻¹ and 80 min⁻¹; back pressure is held at 0.3–0.7 MPa to homogenise the melt without overheating the rubber phase. For mirror-polished electroplating surfaces, clamp force is set at 2–3 tonnes per square metre of projected cavity area; insufficient clamp force creates flash that must be removed before plating because flash edges locally change acid etch rate.

When Multiple Gates in Thin-Wall Grille Tooling Produce Weld-Line Plate Defects

In tools where PA-764B fills a chrome-plated front grille through multiple end gates, flow fronts meet at low pressure and the polybutadiene-rich surface can freeze before full interpenetration. A knit line that is invisible on the moulded surface may become a hazy line after chrome because the chromic acid etch leaves shallower microcavities along the weld. The defect is reduced by placing vent slots with depth 0.02–0.03 mm at the last-fill zones, raising tool temperature to 60–70°C, and executing velocity-to-pressure switch within 0.02 s of cavity fill. On a 250 tonne clamp machine running a four-cavity radiator-grille tool with 850 mm maximum flow length, pack pressures of 55–65 MPa hydraulic are typical; lower pack pressure underpacks the ribs and produces sink, while higher pack pressure increases flash and vents. Differential shrinkage between thick mounting bosses and surrounding facing surfaces can be kept below 0.8% when cooling channels are spaced at 25–30 mm intervals and the tool surface variation is held within ±3°C. A critical processing boundary is the melt front temperature at weld lines: below 210°C, the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix freezes before butadiene domains deform, yielding a plane of weakness that plating does not hide.

Rheological Boundaries in PA-764B Thin-Wall Fill

The melt flow rate of 18 g/10 min at 220°C/10 kg is an insufficient predictor of thin-wall fill in electroplating-grade tools because MFR is measured at low shear. Capillary rheometry or in-line melt-pressure probes should be used when flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios exceed 150:1; published capillary viscosity data for this specific configuration are limited, so process development must generate a shear-rate sweep on the production compound. In practice, the bimodal butadiene particle distribution produces shear thinning during fast injection, but the rubber phase also increases melt elasticity and reduces the critical shear rate for melt fracture in unvented cold-runner systems. When the melt residence time exceeds 8 min at 240°C, the elastomer phase begins to crosslink; backpressure rises, gloss decreases, and the notched Izod impact can drop by more than 15%. Purging with a high-flow ABS grade after 10 min of dwell is required before restarting the machine. These limits define the processing window for hot-runner layouts: external hot-runner tips with dead spots above 250°C or residence times beyond 6 min produce black specks in plated surfaces, which cannot be removed by etching.

Against general-purpose ABS grades such as PA-757, the substitution is not a drop-in colour change. PA-757 is formulated for high gloss and medium impact with internal lubricants and mould-release materials that ease ejection; those additives can migrate to the part surface and passivate the palladium/tin activation step, resulting in skip plating. PA-764B uses a reduced additive package and a polybutadiene distribution designed for uniform etchability, which narrows the drying window and makes regrind ratios more sensitive to contamination. High-impact grades such as PA-747 retain greater low-temperature Izod impact, but their higher rubber content lowers melt flow and can prolong fill time in large thin-wall tools; the thicker rubber network can also increase the chromic acid over-etch risk at exposed surfaces if bath temperature is not reduced. In the plating line, PA-764B accepts the standard sequence of chromic acid/sulfuric acid etching, neutralization, tin chloride sensitization, palladium chloride activation, electroless nickel or copper, acid copper build, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, microporous nickel, and chromium. The plating bath must avoid amine-based additives, silicone mould releases, and zinc stearate additions above 0.1 wt%, because leached contaminants poison precious metal baths and reduce peel strength. For moulding operations, regrind from plated scrap is not re-extruded unless the metal layer is completely stripped and the polymer is washed to neutral pH; residual copper or nickel particles act as thermo-oxidative catalysts and shift the melt flow rate outside the 16–20 g/10 min production control band. This boundary applies even when the plated layer thickness is below 20 µm.
