On a 350 t hydraulic injection molding machine running a two-cavity cordless stick-vacuum nozzle housing tool, CHIMEI ABS PA-758 is dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -30 °C and an air temperature of 80 °C for 3 h to reduce residual moisture below 0.02 wt% before melt processing. The hot-runner manifold is held at 240 °C; barrel zones are set from hopper to nozzle at 190 °C, 210 °C, 230 °C, and 235 °C. The melt temperature measured by a needle pyrometer at the nozzle remains 220–240 °C, because melt temperatures below 220 °C reduce weld-line strength below 12 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A, and higher temperatures raise the risk of brown streaking when residence time exceeds 8 min. Injection speed is staged: first-stage fill at 180 mm/s to 95 % cavity volume, second-stage fill at 80 mm/s through the gate transition, and pack/hold pressure at 55–65 MPa for 2.5 s. Screw rotation is 60–80 min⁻¹ with back pressure 0.8–1.2 MPa. Mold temperature is controlled by a dual-zone thermolator at 40 °C core and 50 °C cavity; ejection temperature below 72 °C is avoided to prevent gate-vestige deformation. A 2.0 wt% light-grey ABS-based masterbatch with a melt-flow index one order below the base resin is used; higher masterbatch addition increases visible flow lines but does not alter notched Izod by more than 5 % when the masterbatch carrier is SAN-compatible. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, closed conveying from dryer to machine throat is required because PA-758 reabsorbs surface moisture. The finished components—vacuum cleaner nozzle housings, brush-roll end caps, and floor-tool connectors—are tested to IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30.2 glow-wire at 650 °C for unattended appliance enclosures and to UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm. RoHS recalculation is conducted per IEC 62321-7-1:2015 for cadmium and IEC 62321-5:2013 for lead; the natural resin carries no intentional heavy-metal additive, but lot-specific verification is required because post-industrial recyclate may contain legacy pigments.
In injection molding of constructional toy baseplates and gear-train supports from CHIMEI ABS PA-758, the melt-processing window overlaps with the limits imposed by EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 Category III limits for barium at 56 000 mg/kg and cadmium at 75 mg/kg; the practical issue is not the base resin but the pigment concentrates. A 1.5 wt% heavy-colour masterbatch can contribute 150–400 mg/kg lead if a lead chromate pigment is used, so trial batches require migration testing according to EN 71-3 with simulant 0.07 mol/L HCl at 37 °C for 2 h before production approval. The grade is processed at melt 200–230 °C with a mold temperature of 25–40 °C to avoid shrinkage differences larger than 0.5–0.7 % along flow. Regrind is limited to 20 wt% while maintaining notched Izod above 15 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A; higher regrind fractions reduce knit-line strength in gear-tooth cavities. The finished articles—building-brick baseplates, hobby gearbox plates, and push-fit toy chassis—are assembled by ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz with amplitude 35 µm and collapse distance 0.2 mm. No external release agent is used, because silicone-based mold release agents can cause solvent stress-cracking under packaging film contact as measured by ISO 22088-3:2020. The documentation package follows EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 mechanical test requirements and REACH Annex XVII entry 51 for phthalate restrictions; PA-758 itself is supplied without orthophthalate plasticizers.
CHIMEI ABS PA-758 fills a 1.2 mm nominal wall of a curved monitor bezel only when the gate freeze time is tuned to the solidification rate of the grade. In a hot-runner two-drop mold with valve-gate nozzles of 0.8 mm tip diameter, the injection phase uses a short first-stage boost of 140–160 MPa for 0.3 s, followed by a second-stage fill velocity profiled from 220 mm/s to 60 mm/s to prevent jetting at the fan gate. Mold temperature is raised to 55 °C because thin sections cool below the glass transition before full packing when the tool is run at ambient water temperatures. Clamp force required is calculated from projected area at 3.5–4.5 tonnes/cm²; a 220 t machine is sufficient for a two-drop bezel tool with a projected area of 0.45 m². The terminal components are monitor bezels, keyboard top frames, and webcam housings. Warpage measured after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C/50 % RH per ISO 291:2008 is controlled below 1.0 mm across a 600 mm length by asymmetric cooling circuits; the core side is set 8 °C cooler than the cavity side. A 0.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch is incorporated when electromagnetic interference coating adhesion requires a polar surface; however, carbon black addition above 1.0 wt% can reduce volume resistivity below 10⁶ Ω·cm as tested by IEC 62631-3-1:2016, which is unsuitable for high-voltage isolation. Amine-based antistatic masterbatches are avoided because residual amine accelerates water absorption and surface marking after 500 h humidity ageing at 40 °C/90 % RH per IEC 60068-2-78:2012. Compliance for the finished enclosure follows IEC 62368-1:2018 subclause 4.7 for resistance to fire in the end product, but because PA-758 is a non-flame-retardant grade, the enclosure typically requires a V-rated external power supply or a design review showing the material is only used in a HB area. Published data for this specific thin-wall configuration is limited; first-article validation should include ASTM D648-18 HDT at 1.82 MPa and ISO 306:2013 Vicat B50.
The replacement of a 20 wt% talc-filled polypropylene seat side shield carrier with CHIMEI ABS PA-758 changes the dimensional tolerance stack at the clip tower. The tool originally designed for PP expects post-mold shrinkage of 1.1–1.4 %; PA-758 at mold 45 °C and melt 230 °C exhibits isotropic mold shrinkage in the 0.4–0.7 % range for a 2.5 mm wall as measured per ISO 294-4:2018. The clip tower openings therefore come out undersized unless the steel insert is recut by 0.2–0.4 mm. Processing on a 650 t injection press uses sequential valve gating to move the weld line away from the side-impact clip retention zone. Pack pressure is 50–60 MPa for 4 s; back pressure is 0.6 MPa. A 15 wt% ABS regrind level is validated for interior trims only if melt flow after five cycles does not increase by more than 20 %, because hydrolytic chain scission in hot-air conveyor drying above 85 °C degrades low-molecular-weight fractions and increases gloss variation. The terminal components—seat switch bezels, side shield carriers, and lumbar handle supports—are painted or grained; paint adhesion is tested by cross-cut per ISO 2409:2020 after flame or plasma pretreatment. Low-odor performance is not a direct property of the base resin; production parts require ventilation and an OEM-specific VOC test such as VDA 278:2011. Direct UV exposure is not recommended for unfilled ABS; the carrier is positioned behind a fascia. Compliance with GB/T 30512 and REACH Annex XVII is revalidated when post-industrial recyclate is added.
For power-tool clamshell housings, PA-758 is processed at melt 220–240 °C and mold 35–45 °C on a 20 L/D reciprocating screw with compression ratio 2.2:1. The tool runs with a 0.8 wt% external color concentrate. Screw-boss pull-out force is assessed with a universal tensile tester at 5 mm/min per ISO 527-1:2019 across the boss root; production lots are accepted when boss failure force remains within 10 % of the validated reference. The housings comply with EN 60745-1:2009 mechanical strength for hand-held motor-operated tools and IEC 61029-1 for transportable tools; dielectric strength per IEC 60243-1:2013 is 18 kV/mm on 2.0 mm plaques. This application area is well-established; no additional formulation detail is required beyond standard drying to 0.02 wt% residual moisture.
CHIMEI ABS PA-758 is selected for non-patient-contact housings of diagnostic instruments where UL 94 V-0 is not required and where the service temperature stays below 60 °C. The molding process uses a 120 t electric injection machine with a 0.6 mm wall section in the battery door. Drying at 80 °C for 4 h to below 0.02 wt% moisture is mandatory because splay at the thin hinge area occurs above 0.03 wt%. The terminal parts—blood-glucose meter housings, portable ultrasound controller covers, and tabletop diagnostic keypads—are assembled with snap features. Creep under static clip preload is evaluated at 40 °C for 1000 h according to ISO 899-1:2017; the acceptance criterion is 0.8 % maximum tensile creep strain at 8 MPa. No cleaning-agent compatibility is accepted without immersion testing according to ISO 22088-3:2020 for environmental stress cracking; 70 % isopropyl alcohol and quaternary ammonium disinfectants show stress-cracking in general-purpose ABS at high strain, so the snap features are designed below 0.5 % tensile strain. Biocompatibility is not claimed for PA-758; patient-contact parts are outside this application. Compliance for the instrument enclosure follows IEC 61010-1:2010/AMD2:2023 for enclosure mechanical strength and ISO 10993-1:2020 only for material characterization when no patient contact exists. A 0.2 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch is added for white housing parts to reduce yellowing during hospital UV sterilization exposure, but color shift ΔE measured by ISO 11664-4:2016 still exceeds 3.0 after 100 cycles of low-pressure mercury lamp exposure.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-758 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade positioned for high-impact, high-gloss enclosures and structural components in which ductile failure behaviour is preferred over low-flow brittleness. Manufacturer technical literature identifies the material for medium-flow injection moulding where surface appearance and room-temperature impact resistance are specified together. Typical published datasheet values include a specific gravity of 1.04 g/cm³ and a melt mass-flow rate near 13 g/10 min when tested at 200 °C under 5 kg load in accordance with ASTM D1238 or ISO 1133-1:2022. Notched Izod impact values in manufacturer literature exceed 20 kJ/m² at 23 °C using ISO 180/1A test geometry. That combination separates PA-758 from high-flow general-purpose ABS grades, which typically exchange impact retention for longer spiral flow. Applications listed in manufacturer technical literature include vacuum cleaner housings, power tool casings, small appliance bodies, toys, office equipment enclosures, and automotive interior trim that does not require long-term unpainted outdoor weathering. No food-contact, medical, or flame-retardant status should be inferred without lot-specific regulatory documentation.
The table below aggregates typical values from publicly available CHIMEI ABS PA-758 datasheets. Test specimens are injection moulded under ISO 294-1 and conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity for 24 h before mechanical testing. The notched Izod impact values are geometry-dependent; ISO bars and ASTM flex bars are not directly interchangeable because of differences in notch radius, specimen width, and clamping configuration. The flexural modulus should be read as a low-strain secant modulus rather than a true elastic modulus, because ABS exhibits viscoelastic response even at room temperature. Tabulated values are typical lot averages, not guaranteed specification limits, and may shift with colour concentrate loading, mould surface finish, and barrel residence time.

Pre-drying of PA-758 pellets is required before melt processing. A dehumidifying closed-loop hopper dryer with a dew point at or below −30 °C should deliver 80 °C for 2–4 h when pellets have been stored in sealed packaging. Drying time is extended to 4–6 h when ambient relative humidity is above 60 % or when bags have been opened for more than 4 h. Residual moisture above 0.05 % is a process reject threshold because it generates splay, silver streaks, and visible loss of gloss on untextured surfaces. Regrind addition above 20–30 % by weight is not advisable for critical impact parts because repeated thermal history reduces the rubber-phase impact contribution and can shift the notched Izod response below specification. Hopper magnets and fines removal protect hot runner drops with gate diameters below 0.8 mm from contamination and tool damage.
Within the CHIMEI ABS portfolio, PA-758 occupies a mid-to-high impact position. PA-707-type grades concentrate on higher melt flow for thin-wall moulding and accept lower impact toughness. PA-757 balances high gloss with fast cycle economy. PA-758 shifts the balance toward notched impact retention while still providing sufficient flow for medium-section injection moulding. In production-scale comparisons on hydraulic injection moulding machines with clamp force between 100 and 180 tonnes, PA-758 fills snap-fit cantilevers and screw bosses with lower short-shot rates when the gate is kept within 0.8–1.5 mm land length, but injection pressure is commonly 5–15 % higher than PA-757 under identical screw speed because of lower melt mass-flow rate. The material is not a direct substitute for plating grades such as PA-747S, because electroplating adhesion depends on etch-resistant rubber-phase morphology and surface chemistry that are not optimised in PA-758. Where a part requires decorative chrome or bright metalisation, the plating grade should be retained. Published quantitative comparison data for all commercial CHIMEI grades under identical tool geometry is limited; grade substitution therefore requires tool-specific short-shot and impact validation.
PA-758 also differs from flame-retardant ABS grades. The published flame rating is HB under UL 94, so the material is not appropriate for enclosures requiring V-0, V-1, or 5VB performance. In electrical and electronic housing applications, the creep path and minimum wall thickness are governed by the end-product standard, not by the material alone. Designers should specify PA-758 only after confirming that the housing standard permits an HB-rated ABS and that the operating temperature does not approach the heat deflection temperature under load. For outdoor parts, unpainted PA-758 does not provide inherent UV stabilisation; black pigmentation with carbon black loadings of 2–3 % by weight may improve weathering resistance, but published data for this specific configuration is limited.
Processing of PA-758 on a standard single-screw injection moulding machine uses a general-purpose screw with L/D 20–22 and compression ratio 2.2–2.5. Barrel set-points follow a rising profile from the feed throat at 190 °C to the metering zone at 220–240 °C, with the nozzle held at or below 240 °C. A shut-off nozzle is preferred because the melt retains enough viscosity at low shear to drool from open nozzles. Mould temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 70 °C. The upper end of that range improves knit-line strength and gloss but extends cooling time. Table 2 summarises reference processing values commonly used for PA-758 in controlled production environments.
| Parameter | Reference range | Set-up note |
|---|---|---|
| Drying temperature | 80 °C | Dew point below −30 °C |
| Drying time | 2–4 h | Extend to 6 h at high ambient RH |
| Melt temperature | 200–240 °C | Upper third for high gloss |
| Mould temperature | 40–70 °C | Raise for knit-line strength |
| Injection pressure | 70–120 MPa | Tool-specific; monitor peak pressure |
| Holding pressure | 40–70 MPa | Gate seal time must be checked |
| Back pressure | 0.5–1.5 MPa | Higher for masterbatch dispersion |
| Screw speed | 30–70 min⁻¹ | Limit adiabatic heating |
| Injection speed | moderate to fast | Avoid jetting on high-gloss surfaces |
| Residence time | ≤8 min | Prolonged heat history yellows the melt |
High-gloss mould filling requires injection speed sufficient to prevent premature freeze at the gate, but excessive shear can produce oriented rubber particles, visible flow lines, and surface haze. The practical shear-rate boundary for unfilled ABS in small gates is near 2.5 × 10⁴ s⁻¹; beyond this range, surface defects often appear in polished cavities. When moulding ribs and bosses, rib thickness should not exceed 0.6 of the adjacent wall thickness to reduce sink and cycle time. This is a mould-design constraint rather than a material limitation, but the impact-modified rubber phase in PA-758 can increase post-mould shrinkage when the cavity is overpacked. Short-shot studies should establish the transfer position before high-volume production, because the lower melt mass-flow rate can delay the fill-phase to holding-phase transition in hot runner tools.
PA-758 is used where the mould texture itself must produce high-gloss surfaces without secondary coating. The mould surfaces are normally polished to SPI/SPE A1 or A2 finish, and peripheral venting is machined to 0.02–0.03 mm depth to prevent trapped gas from dulling the surface. Melt temperature is kept within the upper third of the recommended range, at approximately 230–240 °C, to improve gloss uniformity across large flat panels. Residence time above 8 min at 240 °C can produce yellowing in unpurged barrels and should be avoided. Gate land lengths of 0.8–1.5 mm and fan or tab gate designs reduce jetting on broad surfaces. A polished mould surface alone does not guarantee acceptable gloss; moisture, low melt temperature, or excessive regrind can produce haze and flow marks. For textured surfaces, draft angles should be at least 0.5–1.0°, with additional draft as texture depth increases. PA-758 is not a self-colouring grade, so colour concentrates should be evaluated for melt-flow shift after addition, because some pigment carriers can increase flow or reduce impact energy.
Unpainted PA-758 surfaces are not inherently scratch resistant, and surface hardness is typical for unfilled ABS. Rockwell hardness values in manufacturer literature are near 105 R scale, which is sufficient for appliance housings but lower than glass fibre–reinforced grades. If the application requires resistance to scuffing or repeated cleaning, the design should avoid high-gloss surfaces on horizontal loading areas. For applications involving cleaning chemicals, compatibility screening under ISO 22088-2 or a similar stress-cracking method is recommended before production. ABS grades, including PA-758, are susceptible to environmental stress cracking when in contact with aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and some plasticisers under mechanical strain. Plasticised PVC gaskets or cables placed in direct contact with a stressed PA-758 housing can introduce plasticiser migration that initiates microcrazing. Published data for PA-758 under multi-axial stress with specific chemical exposure is limited; end-use testing is required for enclosures that must survive chemical wipe-down or industrial cleaning protocols.
Silicone mould release agents can reduce subsequent adhesive wetting and cause painting defects. If painting or bonding is planned after moulding, release agent use should be restricted to low-residue grades and validated by adhesion testing. Solvent wiping with isopropanol may be acceptable for short contact times, but prolonged immersion in solvents can swell the ABS surface and reduce impact performance. The material should not be purged with acetal or PVC at high temperature, because decomposition products from those resins can contaminate the melt and affect surface quality. For toys and food-contact applications, relevant regional standards such as EN 71-3 or FDA 21 CFR must be reviewed for migration limits; PA-758 is not automatically certified for all jurisdictions. Regulatory declarations under RoHS 2011/65/EU and its amendments are typically available for CHIMEI ABS PA-758, but lot-specific documentation should be obtained from the supplier for compliance records. REACH SVHC status depends on the current candidate list and must be reconfirmed at the time of shipment.
Moulders shifting an existing tool from PA-757 to PA-758 should not assume identical processing. The lower melt mass-flow rate can increase peak injection pressure by 5–15 % at the same melt temperature. To hold the original fill time within 1.5–2.5 s, the screw speed may be reduced by 10–20 % or the nozzle temperature raised by 5–10 °C. Gate seal time should be revalidated because viscosity differences alter freeze-off behaviour at the gate. Dimensional validation under ISO 294-4 is recommended after any grade substitution to detect warpage and shrinkage changes in ribbed or boss-rich sections. Melt cushion stability should be recorded across shots; a variation above 0.5 mm indicates nonuniform plastication or check-ring leakage. The grade should not be run above 250 °C for extended periods, and barrel purging should be scheduled before and after colour changes. Production trial lots are needed to establish acceptable gloss, impact, and dimensional capability on the intended tool because published data for lot-to-lot variability under specific mould geometries is limited.
