Application of CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-749

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-749 is supplied as an injection-moulding acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer in pellet form. The material is classified as a general-purpose ABS under the ISO 2580-2 designation system; lot-level characterisation is normally reported against ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt mass-flow rate at 220 °C under a 10 kg piston load, ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile stress at yield, ISO 180/A for notched Izod impact, and ASTM D648-18 Method A at 1.82 MPa for heat deflection under load. Because PA-749 contains a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase, hygroscopic moisture uptake requires pre-drying in a desiccant-bed dryer with supply air at a dew point no higher than -20 °C at 80 °C ±5 °C for 2–4 h until residual surface moisture is ≤0.05 wt%. Processing at ambient relative humidity above 60 % without sealed hopper feeding and drying can produce silver streaking, splay, and loss of weld-line strength. The following scenarios are restricted to actual downstream injection-moulding uses for this general-purpose ABS grade; extrusion, blow moulding, and thermoforming are therefore excluded from the application logic.

How Are Electrical Enclosure Suppliers Stabilizing Regrind Ratios in PA-749?

In small appliance enclosure programmes, the recurring process variable is not the base resin melt stability but the contamination and moisture content of in-plant regrind. Formulators running PA-749 at 100 parts by mass typically add 2–4 parts pre-dried color masterbatch, 0.1–0.3 parts metallic stearate external release where deep draw or textured ribs prevent ejection, and 15–20 parts sprues and runners sourced from the same production lot. Exceeding 20 parts regrind in dark colours produces visible surface striae and reduces notched Izod impact according to ISO 180/A because the rubber-phase particle size distribution is not restored by the single-screw feeding unit. On multi-cavity tools with 8–12 hot-runner drops, production-scale checks should include non-return valve clearance against shot weight variation of ±2 %; larger drift causes flow imbalance and gloss variation in black or high-chroma masterbatch parts. Typical start-up settings are rear zone 190 °C, middle zone 210 °C, front zone 220 °C, nozzle 215 °C, and mould at 40–60 °C, with clamp force held at 3.5–5.0 kN/cm² of projected area. The resin is characteristically rated UL 94 HB when tested under IEC 60695-11-10:2013 at the thickness specified on the grade yellow card; it is not a V-0 system. Finished housings for vacuum cleaner canister shells, kettle bases, food processor outer shell components, and iron outer shells must nevertheless be evaluated under IEC 60335-1:2020 Section 30 for resistance to heat and fire, and the compound must satisfy RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH EC 1907/2006 candidate list obligations. Processing above 260 °C for more than five minutes should be avoided because polybutadiene-phase degradation produces yellowing and contamination in the melt cushion; residence time below 5 min and moisture below 0.05 wt% are therefore the two operational boundaries.

In automotive interior trim programmes, PA-749 is used where a high-surface-hardness, high-gloss, lower-cost alternative to PC/ABS is acceptable for non-airbag, non-structural components. The controlled feedstock is 100 parts PA-749, 3–5 parts pre-dried interior-grade color concentrate, 0.2–0.4 parts heat stabilizer masterbatch when the part sits above HVAC outlets, and 15–20 parts closed-loop regrind limited to the same lot; UV-stabilized masterbatch at 2–3 parts is added only for upper instrument panel glare strips or sun-exposed bezels. Processing on sequential valve-gated tools with mould temperature 60–80 °C and melt temperature 230–240 °C replicates leather-grain texture depths of 25–40 μm; the tool should use a low-shear screw with L/D 20 and back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa to avoid dead-spot resin stagnation. Components such as AC control bezels, seat side trims, door pull cups, and gearshift surround rings must pass FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795:1989 flammability, VDA 270:2018 odour class ≤3.0, and ISO 6452:2021 fogging limits specified by the OEM. ELV 2000/53/EC and REACH EC 1907/2006 declarations are required. The primary resin limitation is not mechanical but environmental: unmodified PA-749 should not be specified for continuous UV exposure above 800 kJ/m² under ISO 4892-2:2013 unless a validation programme demonstrates that the UV package retains impact strength and colour difference thresholds; published multifactorial data for this specific configuration are limited.

When PA-749 Replaces PC/ABS Blends in Thin-Wall Consumer Device Enclosures

In thin-wall consumer device programmes that do not impose V-0 flame retardancy, PA-749 is fed as 100 parts neat resin with 2–3 parts pre-dried color masterbatch and 10–20 parts closed-loop regrind from the same part family; antistat or conductive carbon black packages are not formulated into the base grade and must be qualified separately if surface resistivity below 10¹² Ω is required. Thin-wall injection at nominal wall 1.5 mm and flow length-to-thickness ratio up to 100:1 typically requires a high-speed injection profile, melt temperature 220–240 °C, mould temperature 50–70 °C, and clamp force 4.0–5.5 kN/cm². Fan gates and tab gates should be positioned to avoid jetting in textured surfaces; mould-filling simulation using the producer’s PVT and viscosity curves should be performed for tools with more than four cavities. The grade is typically UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and above under the UL 94 horizontal burn test, but the yellow card minimum thickness must be checked because not all colours and regrind levels carry identical listings. Finished terminal types include remote-control battery housings, router shells, set-top box covers, and point-of-sale handheld enclosures, all of which fall under IEC 62368-1:2020 for information technology equipment and must satisfy RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and ISO 11469:2016 marking requirements. The substitution should stop where internal metal inserts or snap-fit arms are exposed to alcohols, esters, or chlorinated hydrocarbons; environmental stress cracking in live hinges has been observed when workers apply solvent-based cleaning agents before final assembly.

Because toy and juvenile product regulations impose article-level migration limits rather than resin-level certification, PA-749 used in toy manufacturing is normally fed as 100 parts natural resin with 2–4 parts high-purity color concentrate from a supplier whose heavy-metal certificate covers EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, ASTM F963-23, and ISO 8124-1:2022 mechanical testing. The equipment and tooling should avoid zinc stearate release; instead, polished ejection pins and 0.5–1.0 parts of an internal release grade may be used only where the finished article is not intended for mouthing. Process conditions are relatively shallow: melt temperature 210–230 °C, mould temperature 40–60 °C, and screw recovery speed set to avoid colour-change dead spots in the metering section. Terminal parts include construction blocks, toy vehicle bodies, and action-figure accessory shells assembled by ultrasonic welding; regrind is restricted to 10 wt% from the same colour family because higher ratios create surface blush and weaken ultrasonic weld collapse. Compliance does not end with the resin: CPSIA 2008 Section 108 lead and phthalate limitations, REACH EC 1907/2006 Annex XVII entries 51 and 52, and EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 torque and tension tests remain article-specific. For toys intended to be placed in the mouth or used in contact with food, PA-749 is not automatically food-contact approved; a lot-specific FDA 21 CFR 180.22 and EU 10/2011 migration study is required before specification.

Personal Care Device Housing: Surface Gloss, Mold Temperature, and Cosmetic Chemical Exposure Limits

In personal care appliance housings, the dominant constraint is not Izod impact but repeated contact with hand creams, test media, and alcohol-based cleaning agents. The feed recipe for gloss-critical exterior shells is 100 parts PA-749, 2–3 parts pre-dried color concentrate, 0.1–0.3 parts antioxidant masterbatch, and 10–20 parts closed-loop regrind; pigment loadings above 3 parts can reduce gloss unit values below 90 on a 60° glossmeter. Production-scale processing uses polished mould cavities maintained at 50–70 °C, melt temperature 220–240 °C, back pressure 0.8–1.5 MPa, and a moderate injection speed to avoid flow-front blush. Components such as shaver body housings, electric toothbrush handle bodies, and hairdryer rear shells fall under IEC 60335-2-23:2016+A1:2019 and IEC 60335-1:2020, and the compound must meet RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II. The operational boundary is chemical: ABS PA-749 should not be specified for surfaces exposed more than 24 h to essential oils, esters, or aromatic hydrocarbons at temperatures above 40 °C, because environmental stress cracking has been observed at thick-to-thin transitions and mated snap-fit ridges. Validation should be performed with the actual cosmetic formulation or the IEC 60335-2-23 specified test media, not with generic IPA-level resistances alone.

The monitor-rear-cover and docking-station sector imposes no unusual additive constraints; PA-749 is therefore processed with 100 parts resin, 2–4 parts pre-dried color masterbatch, and up to 15 parts in-house regrind after granulation of sprues and runners from the same tool. The production process is conventional single-face injection with wall thickness 1.5–2.5 mm, melt at 220–235 °C, mould at 40–60 °C, and clamp force 4.0–5.0 kN/cm²; a fan gate or overlapping edge gate is preferred over a direct sprue gate to prevent jetting streaks in dark grey and black IT housing parts. Fire safety under IEC 62368-1:2020 is met by the enclosure framework only when the PA-749 wall thickness equals or exceeds the thickness listed on the UL 94 HB yellow card, and where the unit does not require V-0. Terminal parts include monitor rear covers, keyboard upper frames, and docking station shells, all of which must satisfy RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and ISO 11469:2016 polymer identification marking. The principal process boundaries remain the 0.05 wt% moisture ceiling and the 260 °C upper melt-temperature limit.

    More Introduction
CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-749 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied by Chi Mei Corporation for injection-moulded components requiring high melt fluidity and repeatable surface appearance. Under ASTM D1238-20 conditions at 220°C and 10 kg, the grade is typically reported with a melt flow index of 55 g/10 min, placing it in the high-flow segment of the Polylac ABS portfolio. Representative mechanical datasheet values include a tensile strength at yield of 40 MPa under ASTM D638-14, a flexural modulus of 2,200 MPa under ASTM D790-17, and a notched Izod impact at 23°C of approximately 16–18 kg-cm/cm under ASTM D256-10. The material is also characterised by a density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ASTM D792-20 and a heat deflection temperature near 84°C at 1.82 MPa load under ASTM D648-18. CHIMEI positions PA-749 for thin-wall electronic housings, domestic appliance fascia panels, and consumer product shells in which high moulding productivity and moderate tensile stiffness are governing selection criteria.

The high melt flow in PA-749 results from a lower molecular weight styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and a controlled polybutadiene rubber particle size distribution. In capillary rheometry at 220°C and 1,000 s⁻¹, the apparent shear viscosity is typically lower than that of an impact ABS grade such as CHIMEI PA-746 by a factor of 2–3. This viscosity reduction decreases peak injection pressure but also lowers elastic melt strength, so tool runners and gates must be designed to maintain uniform melt-front advance. When wall-thickness transitions exceed 2:1, hesitation lines appear if the melt front slows below 60 mm/s.

What Processing Conditions Govern Reliable Thin-Wall Moulding with PA-749?

Pre-drying in a dehumidifying hopper dryer at 80–85°C for 3–4 h is recommended to reduce residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. At ambient relative humidity above 60% RH, drying time should be extended to avoid surface silver streaks, gate blush, and mould deposit. On production-scale all-electric injection moulding machines with clamp forces from 800 kN to 2,500 kN, barrel set temperatures generally range from 200°C to 230°C from feed throat to nozzle, while mould surface temperatures are maintained between 40°C and 70°C. The melt flow index of PA-749 permits cavity fill in wall sections of 0.8–1.2 mm at lower injection pressures than a low-flow extrusion ABS, but injection velocity should be profiled to prevent jetting and flow-mark formation at melt front velocities above 300 mm/s. Hot-runner systems with externally heated manifolds and valve-gate sequencing reduce drool and shear-induced degradation. Melt residence time should not exceed 10 min at temperatures above 240°C, because prolonged exposure causes thermal yellowing and measurable loss of notched Izod impact. At moisture levels above 0.05 wt%, the butadiene phase undergoes hydrolytic degradation during processing and carbonised residue accumulates on gate lands within 2,000–5,000 cycles on multi-cavity tools. On a 16-cavity cold-runner mould, shot-to-shot cushion variation below 1.0 mm is achievable when barrel backpressure is maintained at 3–5 MPa. Lower backpressure permits unmelted granules to reach the check ring and causes inconsistent buffer and short shots. Screw geometries with 18:1 to 22:1 L/D and compression ratios of 2.0–2.5:1 are adequate for this grade. Gate depths should be at least 50% of nominal wall thickness. Cold-runner tunnel diameters below 0.6 mm are associated with elevated shear heating and gate blush. Because PA-749 is formulated for fluidity rather than maximum elongation, parts with living hinges or deep undercuts must be evaluated for notch sensitivity before tool release.

When High-Shear Filling and Gloss Retention Are Simultaneously Required

High-gloss surfaces on PA-749 are obtained when cavity surfaces are polished to SPI A-2 or finer and mould temperature is held in the upper range near 70°C. At lower mould temperatures, the elastomeric phase at the flow front freezes before full replication of the cavity surface, reducing measured 60° gloss to lower levels. The fluidity of PA-749 does not translate directly to high impact resistance. At 23°C, notched Izod values in the 16–18 kg-cm/cm range are approximately half those of a high-impact grade such as CHIMEI PA-746. The grade should therefore be excluded from enclosures subjected to drop-weight energies above 1.5 J unless additional ribbing or wall thickening is applied. In thin-wall sections, weld lines in PA-749 retain approximately 60–70% of unreinforced tensile strength under ASTM D638-14. This retention is adequate for non-structural snap-fit clips but not for load-bearing bosses. When colour is introduced through masterbatch at 2–4 wt%, melt viscosity decreases slightly. Colour carriers that are incompatible with styrenic matrices produce surface delamination and reduce notched Izod impact by 8–12%. Published data for this specific masterbatch configuration is limited, so mould-filling simulations should use material cards supplied by the manufacturer rather than generic ABS parameters. For appearance-critical components, cavity pressure sensors positioned near the end of fill assist in maintaining consistent packing and gloss. Compared with CHIMEI ABS PA-746 and PA-747, PA-749 uses a lower molecular weight butadiene-modified styrenic matrix to raise melt flow. The trade-off appears in notched impact, chemical stress-crack resistance, and long-term fatigue performance. PA-746 is a high-impact injection-moulding grade with significantly higher notched Izod impact but lower melt flow. PA-747 is an extrusion and blow-moulding grade with higher melt strength and lower flow. PA-749 is selected when cavity filling pressure is the constraint, whereas PA-746 is selected when drop-impact or hinge performance is the constraint. Acetone immersion testing under ASTM D543-21 produces whitening and surface attack within 15 min for PA-749, which is typical for general-purpose ABS but more severe than for an extrusion-grade PA-747. The grade is therefore unsuitable for assemblies requiring solvent wiping or direct paint adhesion without a compatible primer. In electronic enclosures with snap-fit features, backside radii below 0.3 mm create stress concentration factors above 2.5 and may initiate cracks during assembly. PA-749 releases from injection moulds with draft angles of 0.5–1.0° when mould release is acceptable. Textured surfaces require an additional 0.5–1.0° of draft per 0.025 mm of texture depth. These design rules prevent ejection-induced scratching of high-gloss surfaces.

Regulatory Compliance, Solvent Resistance, and Regrind Controls

CHIMEI PA-749 is supplied with a standard REACH declaration and, when requested, a RoHS 2011/65/EU compliance statement covering lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE. Food-contact suitability is not assigned to every natural grade. Specific lot approvals must be confirmed against the end-use regulatory standard. The grade is not recommended for direct prolonged contact with polar solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone, butyl acetate, or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Benzene and toluene cause softening and surface attack. Under ISO 62:2008 water-absorption conditions, mass uptake is typically below 0.4% at 23°C after 24 h, but this does not imply suitability for continuous immersion. Co-processing with PVC is not recommended because hydrogen chloride released during PVC degradation attacks the butadiene phase and accelerates surface dulling. Injection moulding plants running recycled ABS regrind can incorporate PA-749 regrind at 20–30% ratios if the regrind is dry and free of oil contamination. Higher regrind fractions reduce notched Izod impact by 5–10% and increase viscosity variance batch to batch. Certificate of analysis values for melt flow index and notched Izod should be requested from each production lot because batch-to-batch variation of ±5% in melt flow index is possible within the grade specification.
