Processing of CHIMEI PA-747 for small household appliance enclosures begins with closed-loop desiccant drying to a residual moisture target below 0.05 wt%. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, residence time in the drying hopper is extended from 2 h to 4 h to compensate for surface moisture uptake during pellet transfer. Desiccant drying air is supplied with a dew point below -40 °C to prevent re-humidification of the pellet bed. The dried granulate is metered into a reciprocating-screw injection moulding machine with a screw L/D of 20:1 to 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. Barrel set points are distributed from 200 °C in the feed zone to 230 °C in the metering zone; nozzle temperature is held at 220 °C to 240 °C. Mould temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 70 °C, with the upper end used when Class A surfaces must match a low-haze masterbatch formulation. Injection velocity is set between 60 mm/s and 120 mm/s; hold pressure is applied at 50 MPa to 70 MPa until gate seal. Back pressure on the screw is limited to 5 bar to 10 bar to avoid generating excessive shear heat that yellows unpainted ivory or white parts. The melt cushion is maintained at 3 mm to 5 mm to buffer variation in check-ring sealing. Sprue, runner and rejected housing regrind is recompounded at 20 wt% into the virgin feed stream after granulation through a 6 mm screen; higher regrind levels are not used for coffee maker bases and cordless kettle shells because repeated heat histories from kitchen-grease-contaminated parts can increase plate-out on the mould surface and raise the risk of black speck formation. Terminal finished products include blender housings, coffee maker bases, hand mixer bodies and external shells for cordless kettles. Compliance for these parts is assessed under IEC 60335-1:2020; for US-bound non-food-contact surfaces, FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 provides the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer extractives framework. Moulded housings intended for direct food contact are outside the normal application envelope of PA-747 unless a functional barrier removes extractive limits.
Thin-wall enclosures for handheld electronics impose a gate-freeze constraint because PA-747 solidifies rapidly against the cold mould wall when nominal wall thickness drops below 1.4 mm. In production of remote control bodies, router housings and telephone handset shells with wall thickness 1.2 mm to 1.6 mm, the gate diameter is maintained between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm for sub-gates and pin-point gates, and hold time is reduced to 2 s to 4 s to prevent gate stringing. Melt temperature is biased to the upper band of 240 °C to 250 °C so the flow front retains enough enthalpy to fill fine ribs and snap-fit details. Injection velocity is raised to 180 mm/s to 260 mm/s, and the screw position at transfer from velocity to pressure control is moved earlier by 1 mm to 2 mm to avoid overpacking at the gate. Mould temperature is held at 60 °C to 80 °C to promote surface gloss replication and reduce visible weld lines around button apertures. Tool vent depths are cut at 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm to prevent gas burn marks at the end of fill. A pre-coloured masterbatch is introduced gravimetrically at 2 wt%; if carbon black is required for infrared-window light shielding, loading is limited to 0.7 wt% because higher carbon black levels can reduce Izod impact below the part specification. Screw speed during recovery is kept at 80 rpm to 120 rpm with a back pressure of 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa to maintain melt consistency without degrading the butadiene phase. Terminal parts are evaluated under IEC 62368-1:2023 for audio/video, information and communication technology equipment and under UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm thickness. Since PA-747 is not an EMI-shielding grade, conductive coating, vacuum metallisation or nickel-spray shielding is required after moulding where RF attenuation is specified; plasma pretreatment raises surface energy above 38 mN/m before coating deposition.
In automotive interior trim manufacturing, PA-747 is used for mid-gloss unpainted surfaces that require lower-temperature impact ductility in seat side shields, door handle bezels and centre console side trims. The resin is pre-dried to ≤0.02 wt% residual moisture before injection because splay generation is more severe in dark charcoal and black trim grades. Nominal wall thickness is maintained at 2.0 mm to 2.8 mm to balance stiffness with gate-area packing. A regrind ratio of 15 wt% is allowed for clean cold-runner scrap that has passed a 1.5 mm granulator screen and has been dried under the same profile; painted scrap is excluded because paint residue lowers thermal stability and produces odour during plastication. Mould temperature is maintained at 60 °C to 80 °C, and packing pressure is set between 60 MPa and 80 MPa for sink reduction on ribbed attachment features. The cavity surface is textured to VDI 24 to 27 to hide minor flow lines without sacrificing release. After ejection, parts are annealed at 80 °C for 2 h to relieve orientation stress before acrylic or two-component polyurethane coating. Compliance is checked against FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795 for horizontal burning rate; material data are entered into IMDS for REACH Annex XVII and GADSL declarations. Published VDA 278:2011 emission data for PA-747 specifically is limited; therefore trim programmes requiring low-odour or fogging-critical interiors should verify emission performance on production-intent parts using VDA 278:2011 before tool release.
Sheet extrusion of PA-747 for vacuum-formed sanitary ware backing stock requires a single-screw extruder with a grooved feed section and an L/D of 30:1 or larger. Barrel temperatures are set from 180 °C in the feed zone to 230 °C in the metering zone, melt temperature is held between 210 °C and 240 °C, and the flat die is controlled at 220 °C to 235 °C to prevent die-lip freeze-off. A melt pump between the screw and die is operated with pressure fluctuation limited to ±0.1 MPa to stabilise sheet gauge. A polished three-roll calender stack at 70 °C to 90 °C is used to produce sheet from 1.5 mm to 4.5 mm thickness; roll gap is set to maintain thickness tolerance within ±0.05 mm. The gap between die lip and first nip point is adjusted to hold a draw ratio of 1.05:1 to 1.15:1, reducing frozen-in orientation that later causes post-forming warpage. Backing sheet skeletons from thermoforming are ground and reintroduced at 30 wt%; the ratio is verified by density gradient column or ash content because PA-747 density is near 1.04 g/cm³ and fillers are not routinely present. Vacuum forming is carried out with sheet surface temperature 140 °C to 170 °C; heating must be two-sided to prevent cold-side bridging at corner radii below 6 mm. Terminal products include reinforced bathtub backing sheets, washing machine top covers and non-food equipment guards. Compliance is maintained under REACH and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, with no brominated flame retardants or intentionally added lead stabilisers. PA-747 formed parts must not be exposed to ketone-based cleaning solvents or high-aromatic hydrocarbon cleaners, which cause stress-crazing and catastrophic part cracking.
Custom masterbatch dilution and compounding with PA-747 as the base resin for toy-grade colours is carried out on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 36:1 to 40:1 and modular screw elements including two high-shear kneading blocks. Virgin pellets are pre-blended with colour masterbatch at 2 wt% to 4 wt%; if a pearlescent or metallic pigment is specified, the maximum loading is limited to 3 wt% to preserve impact retention in thin-walled toy vehicle bodies. The compounding melt temperature is kept at 220 °C to 230 °C, and specific mechanical energy input is controlled at 0.15 kWh/kg to 0.25 kWh/kg. A vacuum vent at -0.08 MPa removes residual volatiles before the die plate. A water-bath pelletising line with 2.5 mm die holes produces cylindrical granules, which are dried to ≤0.05 wt% residual moisture before final injection moulding. Terminal parts include building blocks, toy vehicle bodies and non-food children’s articles with skin-contact surfaces. Compliance is evaluated under EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 for mechanical and physical properties, EN 71-2:2020 for flammability, and EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of certain elements; REACH Annex XVII entries 51, 52 and 72 are also reviewed for phthalates, benzene and toy-related restrictions. Because colour masterbatches can introduce carrier resins that lower heat distortion performance, each formulated lot is checked by ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.82 MPa flatwise after moulding.
Junction box covers and conduit fittings made from PA-747 are processed with a mould temperature of 50 °C to 70 °C and a melt temperature of 230 °C to 250 °C to fill thick sections from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm. A regrind ratio of 25 wt% is allowed for non-critical covers, but knockout retention force is re-tested on each lot because excessive regrind can reduce ductility at living hinge and knockout webs. The injection profile includes a slow initial velocity of 40 mm/s to 60 mm/s until the flow front passes the gate, followed by acceleration to 120 mm/s to reduce gas trapping at raised screw bosses. Holding pressure is set at 70 MPa to 90 MPa for 5 s to 8 s to compensate shrinkage of 0.5% to 0.7% in thick ribs and bosses. Clamp force is calculated at 0.5 t/cm² to 0.7 t/cm² of projected area. A carbon black masterbatch at 2 wt% is used for outdoor UV resistance; no halogenated flame retardants are added, and the material remains in UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm. Terminal parts are assessed under IEC 60670-1:2013+A1:2017 for boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories. Glow-wire testing is performed per IEC 60695-2-11:2014 at 650 °C unless the end-product standard requires a higher severity, in which case the PA-747 enclosure may require a flame-retardant ABS grade or an insulating barrier. Operators must ensure no mineral oil or silicone-based release is applied before electrical installation, as these agents can migrate to contact points and raise contact resistance.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-747 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied as a low-flow, high-impact extrusion and thermoforming grade. Representative manufacturer technical bulletins list the melt flow index in the range 1.0–1.4 g/10 min under 200 °C/5 kg load (ASTM D1238), a density of 1.03–1.05 g/cm³ (ISO 1183-1), and a notched Izod impact value above 35 kg·cm/cm at 23 °C using a 6.4 mm specimen (ASTM D256). The product is used for refrigerator liners, sanitary ware sheets, automotive interior panels, luggage shells, and high-impact appliance housings where low-temperature ductility, melt strength, and controlled surface appearance are required. It is not a high-flow injection grade; that position is occupied within the CHIMEI ABS portfolio by PA-757 and PA-709 series materials.
Moisture control is the first constraint governing dimensional stability and surface quality. PA-747 pellets are delivered in moisture-barrier packaging, but open storage at ambient relative humidity above 60 % can raise residual moisture above 0.10 wt%. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −40 °C or lower is recommended, with inlet air temperature set at 80 °C and residence time of 2–4 h. Target pellet moisture before plasticating is 0.02 wt% or lower. When these limits are exceeded, hydrolytic degradation appears as silver streaks, splay on molded surfaces, or a reduction in notched Izod impact after molding.
Melt processing temperatures for PA-747 are normally held between 200 °C and 240 °C for injection molding and between 190 °C and 230 °C for single-screw extrusion. Barrel set points above 250 °C are undesirable because the polybutadiene phase undergoes oxidative crosslinking and gel formation, producing fisheyes in extruded sheet and brown specks in molded parts. At melt temperatures below 190 °C, viscosity increases to levels that reduce knit-line strength and require excessive injection pressure. Mold temperature is maintained from 40 °C to 70 °C. Temperatures at the upper end of this range improve weld-line strength and surface gloss but prolong cycle time and increase frozen-in stress.
For extrusion, barrel zones are typically profiled from 190 °C at the feed throat to 220–235 °C at the die, with chill roll temperatures from 60 °C to 90 °C depending on surface gloss. Chrome-polished rolls set above 80 °C favor high gloss; matte surfaces are generated with lower roll temperatures and textured embossing rolls. Screw geometry for PA-747 sheet lines is typically a single-stage, barrier-flighted screw with L/D ratio 28:1–36:1 and compression ratio 2.5:1–3.0:1. A static mixer at the die inlet reduces melt temperature variation to less than ±3 °C, which is critical for uniform sag resistance.
In multi-station rotary vacuum forming, PA-747 sheet enters the heating oven at thicknesses between 1.5 mm and 4.5 mm and is heated to a surface temperature of 150–180 °C. Below 150 °C, edge tear and sheet fracture occur during plug-assisted forming; above 180 °C, excessive sag and wall-thickness variation become measurable. Aluminum plug temperatures of 120–140 °C and thermoforming mold temperatures of 60–80 °C are applied for refrigerator liners. Typical cycle times fall between 30 s and 60 s for a 2.0–3.0 mm sheet. Post-formed wall thickness distribution is controlled by plug speed and plug shape rather than by mold vacuum alone, and final thinning below 30 % of nominal sheet thickness should trigger process adjustment because impact resistance at corner regions declines sharply.
Extruded sheet from PA-747 is also used in bathtub, shower wall, and luggage shell production. For heavy-gauge sheet above 4.0 mm, a twin-screw vented extruder with vacuum venting at −0.08 MPa reduces residual volatiles. Regrind is typically limited to 20 wt% of the extrusion feed. Above that level, visible gel counts and calendering roll build-up increase unless the regrind is dry-blended and screened through a 6–8 mm mesh.
Table 1 summarizes representative physical property ranges for PA-747 published in the manufacturer technical bulletin. These values are not specification limits but are suitable for comparative material selection.

Thermal and mechanical history in PA-747 does not accumulate linearly. Virgin pellets processed at 230 °C show a melt flow index shift of less than 3 % after two heat cycles. A feedstock containing 30 wt% regrind from trim scrap of thermoformed liners can exhibit a melt flow index increase of 5–15 % and a notched Izod impact decrease of approximately 8–15 %. These shifts are measurable before visible degradation and are caused by chain scission in the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and crosslinking in the butadiene domains.
Yellowness index measured in accordance with ASTM E313 increases when regrind is held at or above 200 °C for prolonged periods. A closed-loop granulator with a screen size of 6–8 mm minimizes fines, which oxidize preferentially and produce black specks at concentrations above 0.1 wt%. PA-747 regrind should not be blended with polycarbonate, polymethyl methacrylate, or acetal scrap because incompatibility and acid-catalyzed degradation generate delamination and surface craters.
Published PA-747-specific data for recycled-content retention after more than five heat cycles are limited. Users evaluating closed-loop production of refrigerator liners above 40 wt% process regrind should perform melt-flow retention and low-temperature drop-weight testing on first-article parts rather than inferring retention from virgin resin data.
When PA-747 is injected into cold-runner tools, barrel capacity should be selected so that shot mass represents 30–70 % of rated capacity, with a melt cushion of 3–6 mm maintained in front of the screw. Packing pressure is usually set at 50–70 % of the peak injection pressure, and back pressure is kept between 0.5 MPa and 1.0 MPa to homogenize color concentrates without excessive shear heating. Screw surface speeds of 0.3–0.6 m/s and cooling times scaled to the square of wall thickness are typical for part thicknesses between 2.0 mm and 4.0 mm. Mold filling analysis of PA-747 often shows hesitation at wall sections below 1.2 mm; in such cases, gate locations should be shifted or wall thickness increased before reducing melt temperature, because the low-flow character of the grade penalizes long flow paths.
Weld lines in high-impact appliance housings molded from PA-747 are more sensitive to melt temperature than to mold temperature. At melt temperatures below 210 °C, knit-line impact resistance can drop by 20–30 % relative to the bulk material. Hot-runner manifolds should therefore be set at 230–245 °C with no dead spots, and valve-gate nozzles are preferred over thermal sprue-gating where sequential filling is required.
Selection between PA-747 and PA-757 is governed by the priority assigned to melt flow versus impact. PA-757 is a general-purpose injection grade with a melt flow index approximately 40 % higher than PA-747 and a notched Izod impact value roughly half that of PA-747. PA-757 is used in high-gloss electronic housings and small appliance parts where short flow paths and cycle economy dominate. PA-747 is used where thermoforming sag resistance, low-temperature ductility, and stress-crack resistance at corner radii outweigh the need for high volumetric throughput.
Table 2 provides representative directional differences between CHIMEI PA-747 and PA-757. Values are compiled from manufacturer-published typical data and do not constitute lot-specific specifications.
| Parameter | PA-747 | PA-757 |
|---|---|---|
| Melt flow index, 200 °C/5 kg, ASTM D1238 | 1.0–1.4 g/10 min | 1.8–2.2 g/10 min |
| Notched Izod impact, 6.4 mm, 23 °C, ASTM D256 | 35–45 kg·cm/cm | 18–23 kg·cm/cm |
| Heat deflection temperature, 1.82 MPa, ASTM D648 | 92–96 °C | 86–90 °C |
| Flexural modulus, ASTM D790 | 1900–2200 MPa | 2300–2600 MPa |
Because PA-747 carries a higher butadiene content to achieve impact resistance, gloss retention and flexural modulus are lower than PA-757. In thin-wall parts below 1.5 mm, PA-747 may require higher melt temperature and larger gates to avoid short shots. For applications requiring heat resistance above 100 °C, high-heat ABS or PC/ABS blends with HDT above 105 °C are specified rather than PA-747. Where plating-grade ABS is required, a dedicated electroplating grade from the CHIMEI ABS portfolio is preferred because the high rubber content of PA-747 produces a coarse etched surface after chromic acid treatment.
Post-molding operations on PA-747 include flame treatment, corona discharge, solvent-based ink adhesion, and urethane or acrylic topcoat application. Surface tension after corona treatment is brought to 38–42 mN/m for printing; untreated grades usually measure below 32 mN/m. Solvent wiping with methyl ethyl ketone can induce micro-crazing in stressed parts; therefore, part annealing at 80 °C for 1–2 h is recommended before solvent exposure for critical load-bearing components. The grade is not inherently UV-stabilized, and long-term exterior use above 12 months should employ a UV-capped layer or coating.
For direct food-contact or drinking-water components, PA-747-specific migration data are limited. Compliance with regional food-contact regulations, such as FDA 21 CFR 180.22 or EU Regulation 10/2011, must be verified with the resin supplier and converter because additive packages and processing aids influence migration. RoHS 2011/65/EU compliance is typically stated for the grade when supplied with standard heat stabilizers and processing aids, but lot-specific declarations should be obtained.
