What Causes Peel-Strength Collapse in PA-727 Bright Trim When the Etch Bath Drops Below 60°C?

Chrome-plated exterior components molded from PA-727 are specified and accepted under ISO 1456:2009 and ASTM B604 for decorative electroplated coatings on plastics; qualification programs for automotive bright trim also apply ISO 9227:2022 neutral salt spray and ASTM B368-21 CASS exposure, with thermal cycling typically run from -40°C to 80°C for 10 to 20 cycles and evaluated for blisters, cracks, and adhesion loss. Peel adhesion of the metal stack is measured by ASTM B533; automotive electroplated ABS generally requires at least 4.9 N/cm, while exterior applications with wide flat areas often specify 9.8 N/cm minimum. Feedstock formulation is not a compounding exercise: the molding charge is 100 wt% PA-727 virgin pellets, with identical-grade sprues and first-generation runners allowed at not more than 10 wt%. Moisture must be reduced to less than 0.05 wt% by drying at 80°C for 3–4 h; higher moisture produces splay and increases the surface roughness that later disrupts chromium leveling. Injection molding uses a clamp force of 3.5–5.0 kN/cm² projected area, a melt temperature of 230–250°C, a mold temperature of 45–65°C, and a fill speed profile that decelerates near the end of fill to avoid jetting. The plating line begins with chromic-sulfuric etching at 64–68°C for 8–12 min; this is the critical process conflict. Below 60°C the etch rate becomes diffusion-controlled and the butadiene domains are incompletely oxidized, producing low anchor density and peel strength below 4.9 N/cm; above 72°C uncontrolled etch removes excessive surface polymer and causes hairline roughness after bright nickel and chromium. After neutralization and palladium-tin activation, electroless nickel is deposited to 0.25–0.5 µm, electrolytic copper to 15–25 µm, semi-bright nickel to 8–12 µm, bright nickel to 5–8 µm, and chromium to 0.2–0.5 µm. Terminal products include front grilles, wheel cover outer shells, mirror housing covers, fog lamp bezels, and tailgate garnish strips.

On production lines where PA-727 molded shower head shells and faucet handle bodies are chrome-plated for sanitary fitting applications, the governing documents are ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 for plumbing supply fittings, EN 817 for mechanical mixers, and ISO 1456:2009 for electroplated coatings on plastics. Production lot release often includes a 96-h ISO 9227:2022 neutral salt spray test and a 24-h ASTM B368-21 CASS exposure; external nickel release is assessed by EN 12472:2020 plus EN 1811:2011 where skin contact is repeated. Formulation addition ratio is 95–100 wt% PA-727 with not more than 5 wt% in-house regrind of the identical natural grade, because mixed melt histories alter the butadiene domain size distribution and create dull spots on large visible flat surfaces after chromic acid etch. Injection molding uses a two-plate mold with a valve-gated sprue located on the hidden face of the handle or boss side, melt temperature 235–245°C, mold temperature 50–60°C, and hold pressure 60–80 MPa to prevent sink marks opposite bosses. Mold release agents and metallic stearates are excluded because residual surface films inhibit palladium-tin adsorption and cause skip plating. The etch bath contains 380–420 g/L CrO3 and 350–400 g/L H2SO4 at 65–68°C; etch time is adjusted by titration and surface inspection, typically 9–12 min. After electroless nickel 0.3–0.5 µm, electrolytic copper 18–25 µm, semi-bright nickel 8–12 µm, and bright nickel 5–8 µm, a microporous nickel strike is applied before chromium 0.2–0.4 µm. Terminal products include single-lever faucet bodies, thermostatic mixer handles, shower head shells, escutcheon plates, soap dish brackets, and towel bar end covers. Continuous hot-water contact above 60°C is outside the recommended service envelope; steam-exposed internal channels should be redesigned with a metal insert or an alternative polymer.

Electroplated ABS Closures and Collars in Alcohol-Containing Product Contact

Cosmetic and personal care packaging using PA-727 as the plated external shell is regulated by EU 1223/2009 for the finished cosmetic article and REACH SVHC restrictions; metallic surface nickel release is assessed where repeated handling occurs using EN 1811:2011 after artificial wear simulation EN 12472:2020. The molding formulation does not use impact modifiers, fillers, or plasticizers: 100 wt% PA-727 is retained for Class A high-gloss decorative surfaces, and regrind is restricted to <10 wt% from first-pass sprues only. Reprocessed material after multiple heat histories reduces the uniformity of butadiene domains and produces micro-voids after chromic acid etch, visible as pitting after 5–8 µm bright nickel. Molding is performed in an SPI A1 mirror-finish tool with melt temperature 230–240°C, mold temperature 55–65°C, and sequential valve gating to move weld lines to concealed thread roots. The electroplating sequence uses electrolytic copper 10–15 µm for leveling, bright nickel 5–8 µm, and chromium 0.2–0.3 µm; some fragrance collar designs specify gold or rose-gold PVD topcoats after chromium. End-product types include mascara cap shells, lipstick outer sleeves, fragrance collar overlays, compact case rims, and serum bottle neck collars. Direct wetting of the ABS substrate by fragrance concentrate is an incompatibility; if the glass bottle is filled with high-strength alcohol and leakage can reach the polymer, an inner barrier liner or polyolefin insert is required because ketone and high-ester content accelerates environmental stress cracking in ABS.

Where injection-molded PA-727 replaces zinc die-cast and aluminum alloy frames in audio-visual bezels, the plating stack must absorb differential thermal expansion without interfacial cracking. Relevant design verification is IEC 62368-1:2023 for electronic equipment safety, 2011/65/EU RoHS, and REACH SVHC; flammability classification for decorative outer enclosures is verified from the grade's UL Yellow Card rather than assumed, because published data for halogen-free ABS plating grades under all thicknesses is limited. Formulation addition ratio in this sector is 90–100 wt% PA-727 and up to 10 wt% plant regrind; regrind from plated reject parts is strictly excluded because entrained copper or nickel particles can create electrical leakage paths under humid conditions and increase voltage breakdown risk. No halogenated flame retardants are used because phosphorus or bromine species poison the tin-palladium activator and reduce electroless nickel coverage. Injection molding uses a hot manifold with valve gates, melt temperature 240–250°C, mold temperature 60–70°C, and packing pressure 80–100 MPa to minimize molded-in stress that later causes thermal-cycle delamination. The plating stack consists of electroless nickel 0.3–0.5 µm, electrolytic copper 20–30 µm, semi-bright nickel 6–10 µm, bright nickel 4–6 µm, and chromium 0.2–0.3 µm; after plating, parts are tested under thermal shock from -40°C to 85°C for 200 cycles per OEM profile without blistering. Terminal products include audio/video receiver front panels, television bezel trim, smart speaker decorative rings, camera top covers, and projector housing fascias. Use in enclosures with sustained operating temperature above 80°C is not recommended; PA-727 plating-grade ABS lacks the creep resistance of glass-filled polycarbonate in high-heat zones near power amplifiers.

If PA-727 Must Replace Polycarbonate Blends in Interior Door Pull Bezels

OEM interior decorative trim specifications for plated ABS door pull bezels are driven by FMVSS 302 / ISO 3795:1989 for burn rate, ISO 1456:2009 for coating adhesion, and OEM interior climate aging tests such as 90°C/200 h heat aging followed by adhesion retention and ΔE evaluation. Formulation addition ratio is 100 wt% PA-727 for appearance surfaces; regrind is limited to 10 wt% and only from identical unpainted natural sprues, while UV stabilizer masterbatches are not used in the plated surface layer because low-molecular-weight additives can migrate to the surface and reduce etch uniformity. Molding parameters include melt temperature 235–245°C, mold temperature 55–65°C, and an injection speed profile with deceleration at 85% fill to prevent jetting around gate bosses; the tool is textured on non-plated surfaces with VDI 24–27 grain and polished on plated surfaces. The plating sequence uses a high-leveling copper 20–30 µm to fill minor sink marks, followed by semi-bright nickel 8–10 µm, bright nickel 5–7 µm, and microporous nickel plus chromium 0.2–0.3 µm; microporous nickel reduces visible corrosion spread in humid climates. Terminal parts include interior door pull bezels, shift knob bezels, air vent rings, steering wheel spoke trim, and instrument cluster surround frames. Continuous service above 85°C at dash-top locations is outside the grade's recommended envelope; in those locations a heat-resistant ABS blend or PC/ABS should be selected.

Preparing Molded PA-727 Control Knobs for Dual-Layer Nickel-Chromium Finishing

Household appliance control knobs and fascia rings molded from PA-727 are covered by IEC 60335-1:2020 safety requirements for household electrical appliances, UL 94 HB material classification, 2011/65/EU RoHS, and ISO 1456:2009 for electroplated coatings. Formulation addition ratio is 95–100 wt% PA-727 plus 0–5 wt% captive regrind; the regrind fraction is kept low because appliance knobs demand high abrasion resistance of the chromium topcoat and repeated dishwasher exposure, and regrind-induced microporosity can initiate lateral corrosion between bright nickel and copper. Injection molding uses a multi-cavity cold runner with sub-gates at the knob inner bore, melt temperature 230–240°C, mold temperature 50–60°C, and cycle time 25–40 s depending on wall thickness; no mold release is permitted. The plating line starts with chromic acid etch at 64–67°C for 10–12 min and deposits electroless nickel 0.3–0.5 µm, electrolytic copper 15–20 µm, semi-bright nickel 7–10 µm, bright nickel 5–8 µm, and microporous nickel before chromium 0.2–0.4 µm. End products include oven control knobs, washing machine selector rings, refrigerator handle caps, hob surround trims, and dishwasher door fascia strips. Parts exposed to alkali-heavy dishwasher detergents above 70°C for extended cycles may exhibit chromium microcracking; a microporous nickel layer is recommended in such patterns.

    More Introduction

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-727 is a high-flow, electroplating-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied by Chi Mei Corporation. The product is specified for injection-moulded components that require electrolytic or electroless metallic surface layers. Typical published properties include a melt flow rate of 30 g/10 min at 200 °C/5.0 kg under ASTM D1238, density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ASTM D792, tensile yield stress of 44 MPa under ASTM D638, flexural modulus of 2.4 GPa under ASTM D790, and notched Izod impact of 196 J/m at 23 °C on a 3.2 mm specimen under ASTM D256. The grade is formulated with a controlled butadiene particle-size distribution for uniform chromic acid etching, which differentiates it from general-purpose ABS grades such as Chi Mei PA-757 and high-flow ABS grades such as Chi Mei PA-746. Typical applications are automotive emblems and wheel covers, appliance trim, sanitary tap components, and cosmetic packaging. The product is not offered as a food-contact or medical-grade material in the standard supplied form. The main processing limitation is thermal degradation: barrel residence above 250 °C or repeated heat histories can shift colour and reduce rubber-phase integrity, which in turn degrades both impact strength and plating adhesion.

How Does PA-727 Behave in a High-Shear Injection Moulding Barrel?

In production-scale injection moulding, the higher melt flow rate of PA-727 relative to general-purpose PA-757 is expressed as lower apparent melt viscosity at the same temperature and shear rate. This is most useful in thin-wall tools with nominal wall stock between 1.0 mm and 2.5 mm, where flow length and gate pressure drop determine the practical mouldability limit. Hydraulic injection moulding machines with clamp force from 120 tonnes to 250 tonnes and a general-purpose screw of L/D 20:1 to 24:1 are sufficient for most trim-sized parts. The compression ratio of the screw should be 2.5:1 to 3.0:1, and the non-return valve must seat cleanly because overheating in the valve can create black specks that remain visible through plated surfaces. Barrel temperature profiles from feed to nozzle are typically set from 190 °C to 230 °C; nozzle settings above 240 °C increase drool and accelerate resin degradation. Back pressure is maintained between 0.5 MPa and 1.0 MPa to control melt density and suppress splay. Screw rotational speed is limited to 40 rpm to 70 rpm to prevent shear heating above 250 °C. Mould temperature from 40 °C to 80 °C is recommended; the upper half of the range improves weld-line strength in plated parts, while the lower half improves gloss for unplated appearance. In hot-runner systems, externally heated manifolds with valve gates give sharper gate freeze and lower shear history than open hot-runner tips under automatic cycles. Published data for specific hot-runner configurations is limited, so pressure-drop validation with in-mould cavity transducers on the production tool is required before process interlocks are fixed.

Melt residence time at the upper barrel temperature is a more restrictive processing boundary than peak melt temperature alone. At 240 °C, a total residence time above 5 min can produce visible yellowing and reduce impact retention in subsequent tests, depending on screw recovery time and cycle interruption. Stalled cycles longer than 3 min at full melt temperature should be purged before parts are collected for plating. In colour-masterbatch let-down, pre-blending with a low-speed tumbler for 15 min to 20 min is sufficient for uniform distribution without generating fines. Gravimetric feeders are preferred over volumetric feeders because lot-to-lot bulk density variation in ABS can shift the actual masterbatch ratio and alter the final rubber content, which in turn changes etch rate.

Moisture control is a critical boundary condition for PA-727 because residual moisture at melt temperature hydrolyses the acrylonitrile component, producing splay, weld-line weakness, and surface pitting that interferes with electroplating adhesion. The resin should be dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h, with supply air dew point no higher than -40 °C, to reach target pellet moisture below 0.02 wt%. Atmospheric hopper dryers are inadequate when plant relative humidity exceeds 60%. Dried material held in open containers for more than 30 min in a humid plant environment must be re-dried. Regrind should be limited to 20 wt% of the feedstock and dried for a minimum of 4 h; higher regrind levels increase the risk of thermal history variation and can create non-uniform etching in the plating line. Batch-to-batch melt viscosity variation is normally controlled by the supplier, but production records from moulding lines indicate that moisture and regrind variation are more common causes of plating adhesion failure than the base resin itself.

In thin-wall plating parts, gate location and knit-line formation affect both fill pressure and electroplating coverage because the etched surface must be uniformly developed across the part. Edge gates with a width of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm per 1.0 mm of wall thickness and land length from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm are suitable for flat trim. Fan gates or tab gates reduce jetting and improve flow-front stability in chrome-plated parts with long flow paths. Computer-aided injection moulding simulation using Moldflow or Moldex3D with shear-rate-dependent viscosity data is recommended when flow path exceeds 150 mm or wall thickness is below 1.2 mm. Packing pressure is generally 60% to 80% of peak injection pressure; pack time is set to achieve gate freeze and avoid sink marks. Injection velocity should be sufficient to prevent flow marks but not so high that shear heating approaches 250 °C at the gate. Ejector pins should be located away from plating show surfaces because pin marks and local white stress marks become visible after metal deposition. Mould release agents must be excluded from the tool because silicone residues contaminate the etched surface and cause skip plating. If release agents are unavoidable, parts require a degreasing and acid pre-conditioning step before etch.

If Etching Bath Composition and Temperature Deviate from the Plating-Grade Window

The electroplating cycle for PA-727 begins with chemical etching in a chromic acid/sulphuric acid solution, commonly containing 350 g/L to 400 g/L chromic acid and 350 g/L to 400 g/L sulphuric acid, maintained at 60 °C to 70 °C for 5 min to 15 min. The etch process selectively oxidises exposed butadiene domains on the ABS surface, leaving micro-pores that provide mechanical interlocking for the subsequently deposited electroless nickel or copper layer. PA-727 is designed with a narrow butadiene particle-size distribution and controlled rubber content so that the etched surface achieves more uniform pore density and depth than general-purpose ABS grades. The sulphate-to-chromic acid ratio is maintained between 0.8 and 1.2; deviation outside this range can produce non-uniform attack. Trivalent chromium concentration should be kept below 50 g/L because high trivalent chromium reduces oxidative attack on butadiene domains. Following neutralisation in sodium bisulphite at 20 g/L to 40 g/L for 1 min to 3 min, the part is activated in a palladium/tin colloidal solution, accelerated, and then plated with electroless nickel at 30 °C to 40 °C or electroless copper before electrolytic copper, nickel, and chromium deposition. Over-etching occurs when bath temperature exceeds 70 °C or immersion extends beyond 15 min; the resulting excessive surface roughness reduces peel adhesion and can produce delamination at the plate/resin interface. Peel adhesion of decorative electroplated ABS is commonly evaluated by thermal cycling between -40 °C and 80 °C, or by pull-off testing with a calibrated adhesion tester. Published values for PA-727 in this specific configuration are limited, and part-specific validation is required because adhesion is governed by both resin morphology and mould surface conditions. Non-plating ABS grades processed through the same cycle can exhibit skip plating in low-shear flow regions and at knit lines, where the etched surface is less developed.

Comparative Published Property Data Across Plating and Non-Plating ABS Grades

The following table presents supplier-published typical values for PA-727, with notes on general differentiation from PA-757 and PA-746. The values are not specification limits and must be confirmed against the current product datasheet for the relevant production plant.

Compared with PA-757, PA-727 is differentiated by a higher melt flow rate and a rubber morphology that is tuned for chromic acid etch uniformity. PA-757 is a general-purpose grade with a supplier-published melt flow rate typically near 20 g/10 min under the same ASTM D1238 condition and a higher notched Izod impact value; it is not specified in the same way for electroplating etch response. Compared with PA-746, a high-flow ABS grade with melt flow rate above 40 g/10 min, PA-727 maintains the etch response required for metal adhesion rather than maximising flow alone. These differences mean that PA-727 is selected when the plated part requires a balance between filling pressure, impact resistance, and consistent metal adhesion; PA-757 is selected for unplated high-impact parts; PA-746 is selected when flow length is the dominant restriction and plating is not required.

Regulatory documentation for PA-727 typically references compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and its delegated directives, including restricted substance evaluation per IEC 62321 series methods, and with REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC obligations. The grade is not marketed as a food-contact material; published data for food-contact configurations under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or European Framework Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 is limited, and end-use suitability must be established by the article manufacturer. The material should not be combined with amine-based additives or certain organometallic stabilisers that can alter the chromic acid etch response; such combinations are outside the supplier’s standard formulation boundary. Electroplated parts may require additional adhesion testing according to ASTM B571 or thermal cycling between -40 °C and 80 °C before production release.
