Application of CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-709

What Restricts Melt Residence Time When Molding PA-709 Fascia Panels for White Goods?

On production lines for washing machine and tumble dryer facias, PA-709 is injection-molded into panels of 450–600 mm width with wall thickness between 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm. The material must be pre-dried in a dehumidifying dryer with a -40°C dew point or equivalent supply-air moisture level to a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt%, measured in accordance with ISO 15512. Melt temperature is maintained between 210°C and 240°C, while mold temperature is held at 50–65°C for textured fascia surfaces. A maximum melt residence time of 5 min at 240°C is imposed because the butadiene-rich elastomer phase undergoes thermo-oxidative gel formation that shifts surface color and reduces notched Izod impact below the 20 kJ/m² floor required for fascia panel snap-fit bosses. Lot acceptance data normally list tensile yield stress at 43–45 MPa under ISO 527-2, flexural modulus at 2.0–2.3 GPa under ISO 178, and notched Izod impact at 23°C of 25–35 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A. The clamp force required on a hydraulic toggle injection molding machine for a single-cavity fascia mold is calculated from the projected area and a cavity pressure multiplication factor of 35–45 MPa; for a 0.15 m² projected area, a clamp unit of 6,500–7,000 kN is typically reserved. Regrind from sprues and edge trim is limited to 15–20 wt% for appearance-critical panels because repeated heat history increases yellowness index measured under ASTM D1925 and lowers gloss at 60° specular angle under ISO 2813. Compliance anchors for this application are IEC 60335-1 clause 30 glow-wire requirements, UL 94 horizontal burning classification at 1.5 mm, RoHS 2011/65/EU with Annex II restricted substances, and REACH candidate-list screening. A raw PA-709 lot that does not carry a UL 94 V-0 rating is not assigned to unshielded live-part enclosures or to components in unattended appliances requiring a 750°C glow-wire ignition temperature under IEC 60695-2-11. End products include detergent dispenser frames, control panel trim rings, top-loading washer console housings, and dryer lint-filter handles.

Double-insulated handheld power tool clamshells impose a wall thickness of 2.2–2.8 mm on PA-709, with gate location at the air vent or dust extraction opening to place weld lines away from the tool's base drop edge. Cavity pressure transducers embedded in the moving half record peak pressure at 35–50 MPa during the packing phase; premature screw decompression before gate freeze results in sink marks at boss bases that increase dielectric clearance variation. The material is pre-dried to 0.04 wt% moisture or lower using a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 2–3 h. For double-insulated tools under IEC 62841-1, the comparative tracking index of unfilled ABS is measured under IEC 60112; general-purpose ABS typically falls in the 200–400 V range, so live parts are not supported directly on PA-709 bosses. Drop impact from 1.0 m onto concrete is evaluated according to IEC 60068-2-31 after conditioning at -10°C for 2 h, because ABS notched impact under ISO 180/1A at -30°C is below half of its 23°C value. Screw boss diameter is maintained at 3.0–3.5 times the screw outer diameter and rib-to-wall ratio at 0.6:1 to prevent sink and cracking at assembly torque of 0.8–1.2 N·m. This PA-709 application is confined to corded drill housings, glue gun shells, benchtop router bases, and hand-held mixer motor caps where impact energy is repeated but lower than pneumatic tool levels; published data for PA-709 in pneumatic cylinder covers is limited.

Automotive HVAC Ductwork and Interior Trim Substrates: FMVSS 302 Burn-Rate Boundaries

PA-709 is injection-molded into heater duct connectors and door lower trim substrates with melt temperature 220–240°C and mold temperature 50–60°C; cavity-side texture depth is specified by supplier grain books at 25–35 µm average roughness. The material's deflection temperature under load is determined under ISO 75-2/A at 1.82 MPa; published general-purpose ABS values in the 95–98°C band restrict direct exposure to ducts carrying continuous air above 90°C. Horizontal burn rate is tested by FMVSS 302 with a maximum allowable 102 mm/min for materials below 13 mm thickness; PA-709 lots submitted without flame-retardant additives are expected to comply at 2.0–3.0 mm, but compliance must be verified for each pigment package because carbon black and certain organic colorants alter burn propagation measured under FMVSS 302. Molded parts intended for visible cabin surfaces are primed and painted with two-component polyurethane systems; adhesion is evaluated through ISO 2409 cross-cut testing after 240 h of 90°C heat aging. The screw-back sequence uses 60–90 rpm and back pressure of 0.3–0.6 MPa to disperse color masterbatch without excess shear heating. No regrind beyond 10 wt% is introduced into low-gloss interior panels because mixed heat history produces visible streaking under ISO 2813 20° gloss measurement. PA-709 is not selected for instrument-panel carriers that require airbag deployment hinge retention below -35°C; published data for PA-709-specific low-temperature ductility in airbag chute configurations is limited. End products include HVAC footwell outlets, defroster vanes, door bolster back plates, and rear-quarter trim substrates with heat-welded standoff ribs.

Internal chassis rails for electrophotographic printers and multifunction copiers are molded from PA-709 in two-plate cold runner tools with hot drop gating at wall thickness 2.0–3.0 mm. The resin is dried in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80–85°C for 2–4 h to residual moisture below 0.03 wt%, then processed at melt 220–235°C and mold 45–60°C. Cavity pressure monitoring limits peak cavity pressure to 40 MPa; excessive packing raises in-mold normal stress and increases post-mold warpage beyond the 0.5 mm flatness window across a 300 mm rail length measured on a surface plate according to ISO 1101. Heat deflection under 1.82 MPa per ISO 75-2/A is approximately 95–98°C; the material can withstand continuous internal cabinet temperatures of 55–65°C if standoff bosses and ventilation gaps are designed to prevent fuser-zone conduction, but it is not rated for direct contact with fuser heater rollers exceeding 120°C. Flammability classification for internal components is governed by IEC 62368-1 and UL 94; PA-709 at 1.5 mm is typically classified HB, which is acceptable for chassis brackets and paper paths that are not enclosing potential ignition sources. Chemical exposure tests with isopropyl alcohol, n-hexane, and dilute alkaline solutions are referenced to ASTM D543; ABS PA-709 shows stress-cracking risk under n-hexane and should be kept clear of aromatic solvents. End products include scanner carriage frame rails, paper cassette guides, toner cartridge support brackets where no conductive dissipation is required, and control board shields.

When High-Impact ABS Replaces HIPS in Toy Structural Assemblies

PA-709 is used in blow-loaded structural toy parts where high-impact polystyrene would generate sharp fragmentation under repeated knee loading; wall thickness is set at 1.5–2.5 mm, with draft angle of 0.5–1.0° on textured parting lines. The resin is molded at melt 210–230°C and mold 40–60°C; polished cavities with SPI A-2 finish are used for glossy outer surfaces. Mechanical safety is evaluated to EN 71-1; accessible components are subjected to a torque of 0.45 N·m and tensile force of 90 N, and any released part that fits a small parts cylinder is a failure mode. Chemical safety is evaluated to EN 71-3 for migration of antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and selenium from the polymer substrate; PA-709 pigmentation systems are typically selected from heavy-metal-free masterbatches, and batch certificates report nondetect results for soluble lead. REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 restrict di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, and diisobutyl phthalate each below 0.1 wt% of the plasticized material; PA-709 does not use phthalate plasticizers, but recycled feedstock must be screened. Assembly uses ultrasonic welding at 20 kHz with amplitude 15–30 µm and collapse distance 0.25–0.45 mm; welding ribs are triangular with a 90° included angle. Snap-fit retention is checked by a 5 N push-pull force gauge on service handles. End products include ride-on toy wheel hubs, building block chassis plates, doll stroller structural frames, and push-toy base assemblies.

Floor nozzle housings for canister and upright vacuum cleaners are molded from PA-709 at wall thickness 2.5–3.5 mm, with the nozzle base plate gate located at the brushroll bearing pocket to orient unreinforced flow lines away from the sole plate snap geometry. Melt temperature is held at 220–240°C, mold temperature at 45–65°C, and hold pressure at 50–70% of injection peak. The material is pre-dried to 0.04 wt% moisture; hydrolysis is a low risk compared with polyamides, but wet pellets generate splay marks on polished sole-plate underside surfaces under ISO 2813 60° gloss evaluation. Mechanical durability is assessed by repeated drop of a 2.0 kg floor nozzle from 0.8 m onto vinyl-covered concrete under an ISO 60068-2-31-style free-fall protocol; the brittle failure mode of primary concern is weld-line separation at the wheel axle retainer. PA-709 is suitable only for neutral-pH aqueous cleaning and diluted nonionic detergent contact; solvent-based carpet spotting agents containing toluene or chlorinated hydrocarbons cause environmental stress cracking, and published chemical compatibility data for PA-709 in heated surfactant solutions above 50°C is limited. Compliance for electrical accessories is limited to RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH; the floor tool itself is not an electrical enclosure, so IEC 60335-1 glow-wire clauses apply only where a power nozzle contains a live motor connector. End products include brushroll sole plates, wand release collars, hose end cuffs, and accessory storage brackets.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-709 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied as pelletized feedstock for injection moulding and, under restricted conditions, profile extrusion. The resin is identified on documentation by the symbol ABS according to ISO 1043-1 and is assigned an unfilled density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1. The grade occupies the high-impact segment of the manufacturer’s general-purpose ABS series, differing from high-flow series mainly in melt-flow rate and notched impact energy. The product is not supplied as a weather-stabilized system; prolonged exposure to sunlight causes butadiene-phase photo-oxidation and surface chalking unless paint, film, or UV additive packages are specified. Solvent resistance is typical of amorphous styrenic copolymers: ketones, methylene chloride, and aromatic hydrocarbons attack the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and amplify environmental stress cracking at knit lines, bosses, and gate regions. No unqualified FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 food-contact clearance is carried by the general-purpose natural grade; regulatory status for specific food-contact or medical uses must be obtained from the supplier’s lot-specific certificate.

What separates PA-709 from high-flow ABS grades in notched impact response?

The distinction is most visible in the notched Izod energy measured under ISO 180/1A. At 23 °C, representative natural-grade values for PA-709 are approximately 32 kJ/m², while high-flow ABS grades commonly fall below 20 kJ/m² when melt-flow rate is optimized for thin-wall filling. The high-flow series achieves its filling capability through lower molecular weight or reduced rubber content; PA-709 retains a higher butadiene-rubber phase volume, which increases energy absorption during crack initiation but reduces flow length at a fixed injection-pressure limit. This shift is quantified in the melt mass-flow rate measured under ISO 1133-1 at 200 °C and 5 kg; PA-709 typically exhibits approximately 0.5 g/10 min. The trade-off is not linear. Below 1.5 mm wall thickness, cavity filling pressure can rise sharply, and a high-flow grade is frequently a better selection unless impact energy dominates the design brief.

Because the lower flow is a consequence of the higher rubber-phase volume, the practical processing window shifts toward higher injection pressure and longer holding time. Mold-filling simulation with shear-viscosity input under ISO 11443 is recommended for gate sizing; published capillary rheometry for high-impact ABS of similar density and impact class indicates an approximate drop from 900 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 120 Pa·s at 10,000 s⁻¹ at 220 °C. Direct grade-specific flow-length data are limited, so short-shot trials on the intended tool steel are necessary before transfer to multi-cavity production. Gate diameter should be at least 0.5–0.8 mm for a nominal wall of 2 mm; smaller gates induce jetting and increase shear heating. Weld-line regions retain lower impact strength than unknit material, and destructive testing under ISO 179-1/1eA or ISO 180/1A is required for load-bearing areas.

Drying, melt-temperature, and hot-runner residence limits

Before melt conversion, pellet moisture is reduced below 0.02% in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a desiccant-bed outlet dew point of −30 °C or lower. Dryer airflow should be at least 3.0–3.5 m³/h per kg/h of throughput, and hopper residence time for virgin natural material is 3–4 h at 80 °C. Cold warehouse stock held above 60% relative humidity or regrind additions above 20% may require 4–6 h to avoid hydrolytic molecular weight loss and splay. Barrel profile is typically set from 180 °C at the feed throat to 220 °C at the nozzle, with a measured melt temperature of 210–230 °C. The upper melt temperature is not governed by visible decomposition alone; static residence above 240 °C promotes oxidation of the unsaturated butadiene phase, generating free-rubber coalescence, yellowing, and gloss loss. In hot-runner systems with manifold volumes above 120 cm³, the manifold setpoint is limited to 220 °C and start-up idle is kept below 5 min unless purge compound is cycled. Screw recovery conditions of 40–80 min⁻¹ and back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa are typical; higher screw speed can introduce unmelted butadiene agglomerates in the melt cushion. The cushion is maintained between 2 mm and 4 mm. Mold temperature is held between 30 °C and 70 °C; lower temperatures shorten cooling time but suppress knit-line strength. For impact-critical parts used below 0 °C, the tool temperature is raised toward 60–70 °C.

On injection lines with accumulator-assisted screw recovery, the lower melt-flow rate of PA-709 can generate burn marks when fill time is too short and air cannot escape from the last-filled region. Vent groove depth is limited to 0.02 mm with a land of 1 mm; larger openings flash. A staged injection velocity profile is used: a moderate initial velocity until the melt front reaches 70% of the flow path, followed by a lower velocity during the final fill and packing transition. This approach reduces gas-compression burns without lengthening cycle time beyond acceptable limits. In cold-runner tools, nozzle tip diameter below 2 mm can cause pressure drop above 30 MPa across the nozzle; a general-purpose full-round nozzle of 3–4 mm is preferred. Shut-off nozzles are used only when they maintain a full-bore melt path and do not introduce dead spots because degraded ABS at dead spots contaminates subsequent shots as black specks. Regrind use at 20% is workable if the regrind is dry and screened through a 4 mm mesh to remove fines and dust; higher regrind ratios narrow the melt-flow range and increase lot-to-lot impact scatter.

When PA-709 is substituted for a general-purpose ABS in low-temperature impact service

If the substitution involves a reduction in wall thickness or an increase in impact energy at −20 °C, the tooling and process parameters require revalidation. The higher notched impact energy of PA-709 relative to standard general-purpose ABS is accompanied by lower melt flow, so cavity filling must be verified by short-shot progression or simulation using rheological data generated at shear rates between 100 s⁻¹ and 10,000 s⁻¹. Pressure-limited molding on machines with 1,200 kN clamp force may show short shots when the switch from a higher-flow grade is made without increasing melt temperature or modifying gate dimensions. Increasing melt temperature to 230 °C improves flow length but reduces the thermal degradation safety margin; residence time at that setpoint is kept below 5 min for melt in the barrel and hot runner. Raising tool temperature to 60 °C is often more effective than raising melt temperature because it extends flow length without accelerating butadiene-phase oxidation. Surface gloss can vary between gate regions and far-flow regions when lower melt temperatures are used; textured surfaces mask this effect better than polished surfaces. For components stored or used below 0 °C, notched impact energy should be confirmed on specimens cut from the gate area and from the last-filled region; molded-in anisotropy can produce measurable differences between these locations, and the lower-energy location controls the part failure envelope. Standard PA-709 is rated HB under UL 94 at 1.5 mm; it is not an acceptable substitute for a flame-retardant ABS in enclosures requiring V-2 or V-0. For those service conditions, flame-retardant grades are selected instead, and the processing stabilizers differ.

Because PA-709 is sold as natural pellets and as custom-colored compounds, the additive package used in a colored lot shifts the rheological and thermal data. Comparative selection within the CHIMEI ABS range is based on the relationship between flow, impact, and surface finish. High-flow PA-707 grades are better suited to thin-wall complex geometries where filling pressure and cycle time dominate; they exhibit lower notched impact energy. General-purpose PA-757 grades occupy an intermediate flow and impact band for balanced enclosures. PA-709 is chosen when room-temperature and low-temperature drop resistance carry more weight than extreme thin-wall filling. The gap between PA-709 and high-flow grades widens as wall thickness decreases below 1.5 mm, where fill-pressure requirements increase sharply. For thick sections above 4 mm, the lower flow of PA-709 can be processed with adequate gate design, but cycle time increases because cooling time scales with the square of wall thickness. In load-bearing parts, the higher modulus is not a substitute for structural reinforcement; long-term creep is governed by the viscoelastic response of the ABS matrix, and design calculations should use creep modulus values measured under ISO 899-2. Surface treatment for bonding or painting requires oxidation because the polymer surface is low-polarity; corona or plasma treatment raises surface energy from approximately 34 mN/m to above 44 mN/m, but the effect decays within hours and coating should follow immediately. Chemical contact with citric acid or dilute household detergent is tolerated for short room-temperature exposure, but long-term swelling-agent testing under ISO 175 is required for any application involving repeated cleaner contact. Environmental compliance is lot-specific; supply agreements commonly include RoHS compliance under Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC declarations under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. The absence of intentionally added heavy metals or phthalates is verified by batch certificate rather than assumed from the grade name. Published data for this specific configuration in long-term UV weathering is limited; therefore outdoor applications require painted, metallized, or UV-stabilized protective systems and validation under ISO 4892-2.
