On multi-cavity hot-runner tools producing hand-held appliance shells from PA-707, melt temperature at the nozzle is held at 215–230°C, while mould surface temperature is controlled between 50°C and 60°C using pressurised water circuits. The grade's tensile yield of 42 MPa under ASTM D638-22 and flexural modulus of 2400 MPa under ASTM D790-17 support internal snap-fit bosses without metal inserts, but sharp internal radii below 0.8 mm initiate stress cracking during repeated impact at the boss bases. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -30°C for 2–4 h at 80°C lowers residual moisture below 0.05 wt%; moisture as low as 0.10 wt% produces splay and silver streaks on polished cavity surfaces. On polished P20 tooling, mould temperature drops below 40°C visibly replicate flow marks and reduce gloss at 60° measured under ASTM D523-14, even when fill pressure is increased to compensate. Increasing back pressure to 10–15 MPa hydraulic pressure improves colour dispersion when masterbatch is dosed at 2–4 wt%, but back pressure above 20 MPa raises shear heating and shortens the residence-time safety margin.

Colour concentrates are dried separately at 80°C for 4 h before dosing. External silicone mould releases are avoided on parts designated for UV-cured topcoats because residue as low as 0.03 mg/m² can produce local adhesion loss; where ejection requires release, a stearate-based external release is matched to subsequent coating systems. Barrel residence time is kept below 8 min at 230°C because polybutadiene phase oxidation shifts unpainted colour to yellow and reduces notched Izod impact. Terminal parts include electric toothbrush handles, epilator bodies, food processor base housings and espresso machine side panels, all produced to IEC 60335-1 electrical appliance safety requirements, with material flammability listed by the supplier as UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm.
Cosmetic closure tools running PA-707 are configured with cold runners and valve-gated hot drops to minimize gate vestige on visible surfaces. The recommended processing window is melt temperature 210–230°C, mould temperature 45–55°C, and holding pressure 50–80 MPa hydraulic pressure until gate freeze. Because closure threads are assembled with high interference, the mould shrinkage range of 0.4–0.7% is used to calculate pitch-diameter correction; uncontrolled post-mould shrinkage above 0.5% in the first 24 h can increase thread torque and create cracked closure skirts. Regrind fraction is the largest source of surface defect density in colour-critical cosmetics packaging. At 20 wt% regrind, visual black specks and micro-gels from degraded polybutadiene increase; at 40 wt% regrind, melt flow index shifts upward and notched Izod per ASTM D256-10 falls below 80% of virgin value after three heat histories. For this reason, production lots are limited to 15 wt% regrind when parts receive subsequent metallisation, hot-foil blocking or soft-touch overcoating. Enclosures for nail lacquer systems or acetone-based removers are excluded because the polymer softens in ketone and ester environments; published data for specific PA-707 exposure to each formulation is limited. Compliance is controlled through the resin supplier's REACH SVHC declaration under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU; final cosmetic packaging under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 requires migration testing on the finished article, not only the raw polymer. Terminal products include lipstick sleeves, mascara outer caps, fragrance caps and compact mirror housings.
For injection-moulded toy components, gate vestige control is treated as a safety variable separate from impact resistance. Building brick and playset tools are designed with sub-gates or hot-tip valve gates to leave a recessed gate mark below the playing surface, reducing post-mould trimming and sharp-edge failures. The melt temperature is held at 210–230°C; the grade's melt flow index of 1.8 g/10 min at 200°C/5 kg under ASTM D1238-23 permits filling of wall sections down to 1.2 mm with acceptable pressure loss in multi-cavity layouts. Mould temperature is kept at 45–55°C to avoid brittle knit lines in thin-walled brick side walls; falling below 30°C increases gloss mismatch and causes visible weld lines on polished inserts. Because toy safety standards impose article-level chemical limits, raw PA-707 is used only with non-phthalate masterbatches and metal-free colorants. The compliance matrix below identifies the verification path used by converters. Terminal products include building bricks, action figure joints, board game pieces and indoor play structure brackets.
| Regulatory frame | Test basis | PA-707 application relevance |
|---|---|---|
| EN 71-3:2019 | Migration of 19 elements from toy substrate | Article-level test required after moulding; raw material SVHC declaration does not replace it |
| ASTM F963-23 Section 4.3.5 | Soluble heavy metals | Finished toy substrate certification required |
| REACH Annex XVII Entry 51 | Phthalate restriction | Non-plasticized PA-707 base polymer; masterbatch carriers require verification |
Large canister and upright vacuum cleaner housings molded in PA-707 require multi-gate filling because flow length can exceed 300 mm from a single sprue. Each weld line formed where melt fronts rejoin is a potential crack initiation site under repeated vibration and drop loading. A design review of screw boss placement is necessary: the boss outer diameter is maintained at 2.0–2.5 times the screw nominal diameter; the wall thickness of the boss is held to 0.4–0.6 times the adjacent wall, and a 0.8–1.2 mm radius is added at the base to reduce stress concentration. On one production-scale assembly line, M3 self-tapping screws driven above 0.5 N·m without pilot-hole countersink produced radial cracks in bosses within 24 h; reducing torque to 0.4 N·m and using thread-cutting rather than thread-forming screws eliminated the fracture. Notched Izod impact of PA-707 at 196 J/m under ASTM D256-10 provides sufficient base toughness for housings, but knit-line tensile strength retention measured on butt-welded bars in accordance with ASTM D638-22 is typically above 70% only when the melt front temperature at the meeting point exceeds 220°C; sequential valve gating is therefore used to reposition weld lines into low-stress web areas rather than around wheel axle mounts. Regrind addition for non-appearance internal parts is permitted up to 30 wt% if it is dry, dedusted and sourced from the same production lot; external Class A surfaces are limited to 15–20 wt% to avoid gloss reduction and black speck contamination. The finished appliance must meet IEC 60335-1; material flammability remains UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm, so fire enclosure functions are assigned to separate metal or V-0 shields. Terminal components include canister bodies, handle clamps, brushroll covers and wheel housings.
Across desktop printer covers and scanner lids produced from PA-707, toggle-clamp injection machines with clamping force between 4500 kN and 8000 kN are used depending on projected area. The large flat panels require a wall thickness of 2.2–2.8 mm to balance cycle time against sink marks; ribs are designed with a rib-to-wall ratio of 0.5:1 to prevent visible sink on the exterior. Melt temperature is 215–230°C, mould temperature is 45–55°C; lower temperatures increase gloss differences between areas near gates and remote vents. PA-707 is electrically insulating with a surface resistivity above 1015 Ω/sq per ASTM D257-14, so applications requiring static dissipation below 109 Ω/sq must be filled with an antistatic masterbatch that uses a non-amine carrier to avoid premature oxidation of the butadiene phase. This grade is not a fire enclosure material: the supplier lists UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm, so IEC 62368-1 fire enclosure requirements for ICT equipment cannot be satisfied by the bare resin unless supplementary barriers are fitted. Terminal articles are limited to non-fire-enclosure elements such as scanner lids, printer side covers, monitor rear bezels and laminator housings, where ESD performance is either not required or achieved via additive masterbatch.
Ambient chemical exposure for PA-707 in sanitary trim is evaluated through stress-cracking trials before mould design release. Washing machine control panel surrounds and refrigerator handle end caps are contacted by fingerprint oils, diluted detergents and alcohol-based cleaners. The resin is adequate for intermittent contact with aqueous solutions at ambient temperature, but environmental stress cracking can occur when the part is subjected to a combination of residual moulded-in stress and aggressive fat-soluble cleaners. Ketones, esters and chlorinated solvents are incompatible and cause softening or cracking; published data for specific automotive-style screenwash formulations on PA-707 is limited, so customer-specific immersion testing under ISO 22088-3 is required before release. For electroplated trim, the ABS substrate is etched in a chromium-free etching process before electroless nickel and electrolytic copper or nickel-chromium plating; the etch chemistry is selected to produce controlled surface roughness without reducing notched Izod impact below 15 kJ/m². Melt temperature is set to 220–240°C for plating-grade parts so that residual stress is minimised; mould temperature is held at 55–60°C and fill speed is kept high to avoid premature freeze-off at the gate. EU REACH Annex XVII entry 47 restricts chromium VI compounds in surface treatments, so decorative lines use trivalent chromium baths. Terminal parts include washing machine control panel rings, dryer knob collars, refrigerator handle end caps and floor-care trim covers.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS PA-707 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding resin within the POLYLAC grade slate. The resin is engineered as a high-flow, high-gloss, medium-impact material for thin-wall and moderately complex mouldings in consumer electronics, small domestic appliances, office equipment, toys, and cosmetic packaging. Its polymer architecture combines a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix with a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase; the styrene-acrylonitrile phase contributes stiffness, hardness, and surface quality, while the rubber phase governs impact resistance. In PA-707, the molecular weight distribution and rubber-particle morphology are controlled to shift the melt-flow/impact balance toward processability without eliminating the notched Izod strength required for repeated handling. Typical datasheet values are generated under ASTM and ISO test methods; however, these values are not batch-release limits and do not predict part performance under anisotropic flow orientation, weld-line stress, or chemical exposure. The grade is supplied as natural or pre-coloured pellets, requires desiccant drying before melt processing, and is not a flame-retardant system; UL 94 classification is HB at the specified thickness. Because of its medium-impact position, PA-707 is not intended for safety-critical applications where ductile fracture resistance at sub-zero temperatures or after chemical contact is a primary requirement.
The following typical physical, thermal, and mechanical data have been compiled from published POLYLAC PA-707 datasheet values. Reported figures are for injection-moulded specimens under standard conditioning and may vary with colourant loading, regrind content, mould surface finish, and gate geometry.

The melt-flow index of 1.7 g/10 min at 200 °C and 5 kg is the primary processability indicator. This value places PA-707 in a higher-flow region of general-purpose ABS grades, allowing reduced injection pressure and shortened fill time in tools with flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios that would be marginal for lower-flow grades. The notched Izod value of 20 kg-cm/cm at 23 °C is correspondingly moderate; therefore, part designers should not specify PA-707 where repeated high-energy impact at low temperature is the controlling load case. The flexural modulus of 2.2 GPa provides adequate stiffness for housing and enclosure geometries, but large unsupported flat panels may require ribbing to prevent acoustic buzz or deflection.
RoHS and REACH compliance must be verified against the specific lot certificate because additive packages and colour concentrates can alter regulatory status. PA-707 is not supplied as a food-contact grade; FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 compliance is not assumed in the absence of written confirmation from Chi Mei. For applications requiring UL 94 V-0 or V-2, PA-707 is not suitable; a flame-retardant ABS grade or an alternative polymer system should be selected. Processing facilities should also segregate PA-707 from polycarbonate and polybutylene terephthalate residues because trace contamination can generate splay, delamination, and gloss defects in moulded parts.
Moisture uptake in ABS is relatively low compared with polyamide or polycarbonate, but absorbed surface moisture still produces silver streaking and brittleness. PA-707 should be dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to a moisture content below 0.05%. Hopper temperature should not exceed 85 °C because prolonged exposure above 90 °C can cause pellet agglomeration and yellowing. Regrind addition should be limited to 20–30% by weight, with uniform particle size and no fine dust. Melt residence time at 220–240 °C should remain below 10 min; longer exposure causes polybutadiene crosslinking and gloss loss. The resin should not be purged with polycarbonate or rigid PVC, because degradation byproducts can attack the rubber phase. When processing under relative humidity above 60%, the material should remain in a sealed hopper with a dry-air purge. Batches with high regrind ratios may exhibit slightly higher melt viscosity and lower surface gloss; cavity pressure monitoring is recommended when regrind content changes.
For monitor bezels, vacuum cleaner housings, cosmetic cases, and similar appearance-critical parts, surface gloss and dimensional repeatability often determine grade selection. PA-707 is formulated for high gloss, with a tightly controlled rubber-phase particle size and distribution. Surface gloss is typically measured at 60° geometry according to ASTM D523-14; high gloss values above 90 GU are attainable on polished tool surfaces, but the result is strongly influenced by tool finish, melt temperature, and mould temperature. Mould temperatures below 40 °C can produce visible knit-line weakness and a matte or irregular surface because the skin layer freezes before the melt fully replicates the tool. Raising the mould temperature to 50–60 °C improves knit-line toughness and gloss but increases cycle time. Critical dimensions should be measured after conditioning at 23±2 °C and 50±5% RH for 24 h in accordance with ISO 291:2008. Moulding shrinkage of 0.4–0.7% per ASTM D955-08 supports stable dimensions in multi-cavity tools, but flow-direction shrinkage can differ from transverse-direction shrinkage in gated areas due to molecular orientation. Outdoor or heavily UV-exposed housing areas can develop yellowing and impact loss unless an opaque coating or UV-stabilized colour concentrate is used.
On production-scale injection moulding machines with clamp force from 80 to 180 tonnes, PA-707 is typically processed at melt temperatures of 190–230 °C and mould temperatures of 30–70 °C. For wall thickness below 1.8 mm, melt temperature is usually biased to 220–230 °C and mould temperature to 50–70 °C to maintain gloss and knit-line strength. Injection speed is set from moderate to fast; excessive speed above the point of jetting or gate blush creates surface defects. Screw back pressure is commonly held at 0.5–1.0 MPa, with a cushion of 2–5 mm maintained to ensure consistent pack-and-hold. Screw rotation speed for a 40–60 mm diameter screw is typically 60–120 rpm, adjusted to avoid shear heating above the recommended melt-temperature upper limit. The high melt-flow index of PA-707 permits lower hydraulic fill pressures and shorter fill times, but gate solidification occurs rapidly; transfer from velocity control to pressure control should occur before gate freeze to avoid sink marks and dimensional variability. Cavity pressure transducers are recommended in high-volume tools because they detect lot-to-lot viscosity shifts and allow closed-loop switchover. Published data for specific thin-wall configurations is limited; initial process parameters should be established through short-shot and gate-seal studies.
Within the Chi Mei POLYLAC line, PA-707 is distinct from PA-757 principally in the flow-impact trade-off. PA-757 is a high-impact, high-gloss ABS with higher notched Izod strength as reported under ASTM D256, but its melt viscosity is generally higher; this makes it preferable for thicker-walled appearance parts and applications exposed to rough assembly or drop loading. PA-707, by contrast, is selected when thin-wall fill speed, lower injection pressure, and faster cycling are more critical than maximum impact resistance. PA-717C is a general-purpose grade with a slightly different gloss and impact profile, often used where surface uniformity in multi-cavity tools is important; published datasheet comparison indicates that PA-707 offers higher melt flow, while PA-717C may be specified for larger parts where wall thickness is not the limiting factor. PA-756 is a high-flow grade positioned further toward processability, with a melt-flow index above that of PA-707 and a correspondingly lower notched Izod value; it is used for complex, long-flow-length parts where PA-707 may not fill at acceptable injection pressure. Direct numerical comparison should be made using current datasheets because grade revisions and test methods affect reported values. Published data for this specific comparison configuration is limited; therefore, the selection between PA-707 and adjacent grades should be confirmed by spiral-flow trials and instrumented impact testing on production-scale tools.
Washing machine control panels, robot vacuum shells, and cosmetic packaging closures represent typical application geometries for PA-707. In these parts, gate positions, weld-line placement, and wall-thickness uniformity determine whether the grade’s medium-impact, high-gloss profile is sufficient. Mould trials on a multi-cavity tool with hot-runner valve gates and wall stock of 2.0–2.5 mm have shown acceptable surface quality when the melt is dried below 0.05% moisture and the tool is maintained at 50–60 °C. However, if the same part is subjected to repeated drop loading on a hard floor, PA-757 or a high-impact ABS may be required. Outdoor or heavily UV-exposed housing areas can develop yellowing and impact loss unless an opaque coating or UV-stabilized colour concentrate is used. The grade is not recommended for direct contact with strong organic solvents, ketones, esters, or chlorinated hydrocarbons, which attack the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and induce stress cracking under moulded-in stress. For such exposure, post-mould annealing or a chemically resistant polymer selection is necessary.
