Pre-drying handling for CHIMEI ABS D-1600 is established at 80 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with supply air dew point -40 °C, targeting residual moisture below 0.02 wt%. The downstream application scenarios below are restricted to injection moulding programmes in which general-purpose and low-gloss ABS grades are specified on current manufacturing lines. Unless a lot-specific certificate of analysis states otherwise, melt temperature at the nozzle is not to exceed 250 °C, and total residence time in the barrel and hot runner is not to exceed 300 s.
Production of low-gloss unpainted interior trim transfers paint-line appearance control directly to the moulded surface, making melt homogeneity, tool texture replication, and emission behaviour the dominant process variables. In this sector, ABS D-1600 is dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h to residual moisture below 0.02 wt%, then processed on servo-electric injection moulding machines with clamp force from 80–120 t and screw L/D ratios of 20:1–24:1. The measured melt temperature is held at 220–250 °C; operation below 220 °C produces cold flow marks in grained cavities, while operation above 250 °C increases low-molecular-weight fraction generation and raises VDA 278 VOC values. Back pressure is set at 0.3–1.0 MPa, screw speed at 30–80 rpm, and pack/hold pressure at 40–60 MPa for 2–5 s. Tool temperature is controlled by water manifold at 40–70 °C, and grained surfaces use texture depths of 25–35 µm to maintain consistent low gloss without high-gloss flow lines. Formulation addition ratio in this application is 100 parts by weight ABS D-1600, 2–4 wt% low-odor colour concentrate, 0.1–0.3 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.05–0.15 phr silicone-containing mould release. Where tighter gloss suppression is required for side trim exposed to oblique light, 0.5–1.0 wt% crosslinked PMMA bead is introduced as a light-scattering additive. Compliance documentation includes FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795 for burn rate, VDA 278 for VOC and SVOC emissions, SAE J2412 for xenon arc interior exposure, and REACH Annex XVII restricted substance screening. Terminal product types produced under these conditions include pillar covers, glove box outer panels, lower instrument panel trim, door panel inserts, seat side shields, and centre console side panels.
Household appliance structural enclosures moulded from ABS D-1600 present splay, gas line, and rib sink reject modes when hot runner manifolds are not balanced or when manifold dead spots retain melt beyond the thermal stability limit. The melt distribution system is maintained at a manifold temperature of 210–240 °C, with nozzle tip temperature not exceeding 250 °C and material residence time below 300 s. The injection moulding machine uses a three-section general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1–24:1, compression ratio 2.0:1–2.2:1, and check ring closure repeatability within 0.1 mm to prevent shot-weight drift. Mould-filling speed is set at 30–70 mm/s, pack/hold pressure is maintained at 50–70 MPa, and cooling time ranges from 15–35 s for 2.5 mm nominal wall thickness. Tool temperature is controlled at 50–80 °C to avoid visible knit lines around rib bosses and snap-fit features. The dry-blend ratio for appliance panels is 100 parts by weight ABS D-1600, 2–3 wt% high-dispersion pigment masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 phr processing stabiliser, and 0.05–0.1 wt% silicone powder for demoulding. Detergent-resistant panels may require 0.5–1.0 wt% hindered amine light stabiliser where the enclosure is exposed to UV through kitchen windows. The relevant compliance framework includes IEC 60335-1 for household appliance mechanical safety, IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire testing for unattended appliance enclosures, UL 94 HB for flammability classification, and RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II for restricted substances. Terminal product types include vacuum cleaner housings, air purifier shells, washing machine control panels, refrigerator trim, and dehumidifier casings.
For ICT equipment enclosure programmes, ABS D-1600 is specified where the safety architecture permits non-flame-retardant HB-rated thermoplastics and where electromagnetic compatibility is managed at the board level rather than through conductive polymer compounds. The compliance matrix for a 2.5 mm wall monitor housing includes IEC 62368-1:2018 for energy source protection, UL 94 HB for flammability, RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Candidate List screening, plus IEC 61340-5-1 where a static-dissipative compound is required. A production formulation is 100 parts by weight ABS D-1600, 1.0–3.0 wt% antistatic masterbatch to achieve surface resistivity of 10^9–10^11 Ω/sq, and 2–4 wt% colour concentrate. The material is dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h to below 0.02 wt% moisture, and processing is carried out on hydraulic or servo-electric machines with clamp force 120–250 t, screw L/D 20:1–24:1, back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa, and screw speed 30–80 rpm. Melt temperature is held at 220–240 °C, and mould temperature is controlled at 40–60 °C. Gate diameter is set at 1.2–2.0 mm, with valve-gate sequencing used to eliminate weld lines in bezel corners. Terminal product types include monitor back covers, keyboard frames, router bottom housings, printer side panels, and scanner bezels.

| UL 94 HB | Horizontal burn rate, thickness 3.0 mm or less | Slow horizontal burning classification |
| RoHS 2011/65/EU | Annex II restricted substances, homogeneous material | Lead, cadmium, mercury, Cr(VI), PBB, PBDE absence |
| IEC 61340-5-1 | Protection of ESD sensitive devices | Surface resistivity 10^9–10^11 Ω/sq |
ABS D-1600 is used in rigid toy components only after a pre-screening programme confirms that residual styrene and acrylonitrile levels fall within the manufacturer’s toy-grade tolerance band. The chemical compliance framework is EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of 19 elements from toy materials, REACH Annex XVII restrictions, and the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC; for markets outside the EU, ASTM F963-23 heavy-metal and mechanical-safety test methods are applied. The compound is metered at 100 phr ABS D-1600, 2–4 wt% high-dispersibility colour masterbatch screened for heavy-metal-free pigments, and 0.1–0.3 phr slip/antiblock additive. Moulding is performed on 50–100 t servo-electric machines with melt temperature 210–240 °C, mould temperature 40–60 °C, screw L/D 20:1, and injection speed 20–50 mm/s to reduce residual stress around living hinges and snap-fit undercuts. Terminal product types include building-block baseplates, ride-on toy body panels, sorting toy frames, and reinforced structural bases for educational playsets.
When thin-wall protective case and luggage accessory tooling imposes strict residence time limits, ABS D-1600 is processed with a narrow thermal profile to avoid silver streaks and odour generation. The material is pre-dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h; melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained at 220–245 °C; and mould temperatures are reduced to 30–50 °C to shorten cooling time. Machines from 100–180 t clamp force are equipped with screws having L/D 22:1–24:1 and compression ratio 2.2:1; valve-gate hot runner passages are sized to 1.5–2.5 mm to avoid pressure drop above 150 MPa in the manifold. Formulation addition ratio is 100 parts by weight ABS D-1600, 3–5 wt% masterbatch for deep-draw colour stability, 0.2–0.5 phr antioxidant, and 0.5–1.0 wt% UV stabiliser when the case is used in outdoor tool rental fleets. Compliance documentation is limited to industrial and consumer product requirements: REACH, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and California Proposition 65 for phthalate and heavy-metal screening. Terminal product types include tool case clamshells, luggage corner reinforcement panels, protective equipment housings, and portable instrument cases. Published quantitative data for ABS D-1600 in thin-wall protective case tooling is limited; the processing envelope above is derived from general ABS injection moulding machine bulletins and should be verified against the lot-specific certificate of analysis before mould validation.
Office furniture cable management components and seating armrest inserts are produced from ABS D-1600 where continuous static load remains below 0.5 MPa at 60 °C. The industry compliance framework includes BIFMA X5.1 for seating components, BIFMA X5.5 for desk products, REACH, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and UL 94 HB for flammability classification. The material is dry-blended at 100 parts by weight ABS D-1600, 2–3 wt% colour masterbatch, 0.1–0.3 phr processing aid, and 0.05–0.1 wt% mould release. Moulding is performed on 80–150 t machines with melt temperature 210–240 °C, mould temperature 40–70 °C, screw L/D 20:1–24:1, and pack/hold pressure 35–55 MPa. Gate size is held at 1.0–1.8 mm for visible surfaces to reduce gas trapping and jetting. Terminal product types include cable management trays, desk grommets, chair armrest structural inserts, monitor stand covers, and leg end caps. The grade is not specified for outdoor furniture shells without a weatherable capstock or UV-stable coating.

CHIMEI (Chi Mei) ABS D-1600 is a general-purpose injection-moulding-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied by Chi Mei Corporation. The material consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase with a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase; the SAN phase contributes stiffness, heat resistance, and melt processability, while the polybutadiene phase provides room-temperature and low-temperature notched impact resistance. Published distributor data list polymer density at 1.04 g/cm³ under ASTM D792, a melt flow rate of 18 g/10 min at 220°C/10 kg under ASTM D1238, and a mould shrinkage range of 0.4–0.6% under ASTM D955. The resin is not formulated for transparent moulding or inherently UV-stable outdoor exposure beyond standard ABS behaviour.
Mechanical properties reported on 3.2 mm injection-moulded specimens include a tensile yield stress of 43 MPa under ASTM D638, flexural modulus of 2.3 GPa under ASTM D790, and notched Izod impact strength of 294 J/m at 23°C under ASTM D256, equivalent to approximately 30 kJ/m² under ISO 180/A. Heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa is approximately 87°C under ASTM D648; Vicat softening temperature is approximately 100°C under ASTM D1525. These values are typical published data from distributor literature rather than guaranteed specification limits; incoming-quality laboratories should generate lot-specific data under ISO 1133-1 and ISO 180/A when qualifying the grade for load-bearing enclosures.
Moisture in ABS is not as hydrolytically aggressive as in polyamide or polycarbonate, but excess moisture in D-1600 causes surface splay, silver streaking, and a measurable reduction in notched impact retention. Desiccant drying at 80°C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.05% is the standard pre-processing condition; a hopper dryer alone is not sufficient when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. The drying dew point of the desiccant bed should remain below -30°C. On production-scale moulding cells with central drying systems, batch-to-batch variations in pellet bed height and return-air temperature can generate moisture differentials that appear as intermittent splay at the gate area even when the nominal set-point is unchanged. Dry-air generators with dew-point monitoring and insulated hopper legs are therefore preferred over floor-standing hot-air hoppers for this grade.
Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should be maintained between 200°C and 240°C; excursions above 250°C accelerate thermal degradation of the butadiene phase, producing surface discolouration and a sharp decline in impact strength. The recommended mould temperature is 40–70°C. Melt residence time at the upper end of the range should not exceed 5 min; hot-runner systems with dead spots or unmelted boundaries can increase local residence time and generate brown streaks. Back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa is adequate for homogenising colour masterbatch, while screw speed should be limited to 50–100 rpm to avoid frictional overheating in general-purpose screws with 20:1 to 25:1 L/D ratios.
The upper processing temperature at 240°C is not a hard ceiling, but the degradation rate of the polybutadiene phase rises sharply above 250°C; dissolved oxygen and residual transition-metal catalyst residues accelerate auto-oxidation. In practice, the temperature differential between barrel zones and the nozzle should be controlled within ±5°C to avoid local overheating at the check-ring or nozzle adaptor. The difference between heater-band set-point and actual melt temperature can reach 10–15°C at high screw speeds due to viscous dissipation, so nozzle-temperature verification with a pyrometer or insertion thermocouple is required during initial process validation.
D-1600 is commonly evaluated for consumer appliance housings, small appliance bases, vacuum cleaner shrouds, and general industrial covers where the combination of high notched Izod impact and moderate heat resistance is sufficient. On a 120-ton toggle-clamp machine with a 40 mm screw and a single-edge-gated tool, injection pressures of 70–120 MPa are typically observed for wall sections of 2.0–2.5 mm; the material generates lower cavity pressure than high-viscosity grades such as PA-747, but it does not fill long thin-wall flow paths as readily as a high-flow ABS with a melt flow rate above 25 g/10 min. Moulders evaluating D-1600 as a replacement for PA-747 in large structural housings must verify not only the melt flow difference but also the lower melt strength during gas-assisted or water-assisted injection moulding; published data for this specific gas-assisted configuration are limited.
D-1600 overlaps substantially with Chi Mei PA-757 in published mechanical and thermal values. The practical difference is often not a step-change in datasheet properties but rather grade registration, colour supply, lot size, and local certification status. Relative to PA-747, the distinctions are broader and more functionally relevant. D-1600 has approximately 3.3× the melt flow rate of PA-747 and about 25% lower notched Izod impact at 23°C. This positions D-1600 for moderate-flow injection moulding, while PA-747 is selected for high-impact sheet extrusion and deep-draw thermoforming where higher melt viscosity is required for sag resistance.
| Property | Test method | D-1600 | PA-757 | PA-747 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melt flow rate | ASTM D1238, 220°C/10 kg | 18 g/10 min | 18 g/10 min | 5.5 g/10 min |
| Notched Izod impact, 23°C, 3.2 mm | ASTM D256 | 294 J/m | 294 J/m | 392 J/m |
| Tensile yield stress | ASTM D638 | 43 MPa | 43 MPa | 40 MPa |
| Flexural modulus | ASTM D790 | 2.3 GPa | 2.2 GPa | 1.9 GPa |
| Heat deflection temperature | ASTM D648, 1.82 MPa | 87°C | 88°C | 86°C |
High-heat ABS grades with HDT above 100°C will outperform D-1600 in automotive interior parts exposed to upper-dash thermal loads. Published data for D-1600 in continuous 100°C service are limited, and a high-heat ABS should be selected when heat deflection is the controlling specification. Electroplating grades are chemically etched and must have controlled butadiene domains; D-1600 is not marketed as an electroplating resin. Parts requiring electroplated ABS should use Chi Mei’s dedicated electroplating grade, such as PA-726M, rather than D-1600.
Replacing PA-747 with D-1600 in an existing injection-moulded housing requires a systematic re-validation of melt temperature, injection speed, and packing pressure. Because D-1600 has a higher melt flow rate than PA-747, it may reduce injection pressure by 15–25% in the same tool, but it may also change gate freeze time and sink-mark formation. Packing pressure should be re-optimised using cavity pressure sensors rather than transfer-position settings alone. The holding pressure window is typically 50–80% of peak injection pressure for wall sections of 2.0–3.0 mm; excessive packing can create moulded-in stress that reduces environmental stress cracking resistance.
Projected area clamping requirements are comparable to other ABS grades: cavity pressure of 30–50 MPa is typical for a 2.0 mm wall section with a conventional cold runner. A preliminary machine-selection factor of 0.5–0.8 tonnes/cm² is used, but flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio and gate placement determine the actual required clamp force. On a 120-ton hydraulic clamp with 2.5 mm nominal wall thickness, moulders should expect screw recovery to be faster than with PA-747, which may require adjustment of screw-back position to maintain consistent shot weight.
The molecular weight distribution, as inferred from melt flow rate under ASTM D1238, indicates lower melt viscosity than PA-747 and similar viscosity to PA-757. The structural position produces the grade’s characteristic balance: adequate impact for appliance housings, but limited melt strength for thick-section extrusion blow moulding. When reporting under ISO conditions, the melt volume rate is approximately 17 cm³/10 min at 220°C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1; the difference from the mass-based value reflects the 1.04 g/cm³ density. Incoming inspection should specify whether the supplier reports mass flow or volume flow because an uncontrolled unit switch between ASTM and ISO testers can produce apparent lot-to-lot drift of 10% or more.
Chemical compatibility follows general ABS behaviour: aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents attack the SAN phase; prolonged exposure to these agents can produce environmental stress cracking under tensile load. The grade is not recommended for continuous hot water exposure above 60°C or for outdoor load-bearing applications without UV-stabilised capstock or paint. Published data for D-1600-specific chemical resistance are limited; therefore, customer-specific immersion testing under ASTM D543 should be performed when the part contacts cleaning agents, lubricants, or plasticised PVC gaskets.
The flammability classification for D-1600 is HB at 3.0 mm under UL 94. Any electrical enclosure requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm will require a flame-retardant ABS grade, not D-1600. Regulatory compliance is batch- and supplier-document-dependent; the resin supplier’s current certificate should always be requested.
| Requirement | Designation | Status/Value |
|---|---|---|
| Flammability classification | UL 94 | HB at 3.0 mm |
| Restriction of Hazardous Substances | 2011/65/EU | Supplier declaration required |
| REACH SVHC | EC 1907/2006 | Supplier declaration required |
| Food contact | FDA 21 CFR | Not established in distributor literature; supplementary migration testing required under FDA 21 CFR or EU 10/2011 |
The terpolymer composition is based on acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, with the monomers identifiable by CAS 107-13-1, 106-99-0, and 100-42-5. Residual monomer content is controlled to supplier specifications, but the exact residual styrene concentration is not disclosed in distributor literature. For applications involving skin contact or food-contact migration, supplementary testing is mandatory because general-purpose ABS is not automatically cleared for direct food contact in every jurisdiction.
