Application of Chevron Phillips Marlex UHMWPE HXM 50100-02

What Limits Ram Extrusion Throughput for HXM 50100-02 in Wear Strip Production?

In solid-state ram extrusion, Chevron Phillips Marlex UHMWPE HXM 50100-02 powder is metered from a hopper into a hydraulically driven barrel where a reciprocating piston compacts the powder against a heated die; the conversion mechanism is particle densification and interfacial diffusion rather than the melt-flow behaviour observed in lower-molecular-weight polyethylene. The charge formulation is 96–100 wt% HXM 50100-02, with optional carbon black masterbatch added at 2.0–4.0 wt% when outdoor UV stabilisation is required, and 0.1–0.5 wt% of a stearate-based flow aid only when feed bridging is observed; internal lubricants above 0.5 wt% can retard particle fusion and produce weld-line porosity at the die entry. Barrel temperatures are held between 200 °C and 230 °C, die temperature between 200 °C and 220 °C, and ram pressure between 20 MPa and 40 MPa; sustained operation at the upper temperature boundary raises the risk of oxidative degradation unless the feed throat is purged with nitrogen, while operation below 190 °C produces incomplete sintering that appears as low notched impact resistance at the stock centre. Compliance is confirmed against ASTM D4020-18 for UHMWPE extrusion materials, ISO 11542-1:2001 for designation and specification, and FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) for repeated-use food-contact articles when the fabricated component meets the specified extractives limits; EU food-contact use additionally requires verification under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I and Annex II. The terminal products are wear strips, chain guides, conveyor guide rails, star wheels, curved tracks, and bearing shells installed in bottling lines, packaging conveyors, and bulk solids handling systems where metal-polymer contact creates abrasive wear.

Compression moulding without melt flow: densification thresholds and cooling rate control

Owing to the absence of detectable melt flow, compression moulding of HXM 50100-02 is a sintering operation in which powder is heated under press force to eliminate interparticle voids and then cooled under pressure to stabilise dimensions. The charge composition is normally 100 wt% HXM 50100-02; where electrostatics must be controlled, 8–15 wt% of a conductive carbon black masterbatch may be back-blended, but published mechanical data for this specific grade at conductive carbon loadings above 15 wt% are limited. Mould charging is performed at bulk density 0.45–0.55 g/cm³, and the press applies 10–20 MPa while the mould reaches 200–210 °C; soak time is scaled at approximately 10 min per 25 mm of part thickness, with longer soak times required for sections exceeding 100 mm. Cooling under maintained pressure to 50 °C at 5–10 °C/min prevents centreline vacuum voids and residual stress that cause post-machining warpage. Premature pressure release before the centre of the moulded block falls below 80 °C is a common batch-to-batch failure mode observed on hydraulic presses. Compliance testing for finished stock shapes follows ASTM D4020-18 and ISO 11542-2:1998, with tensile and flexural characterisation by ISO 527-2:2012 and ISO 178:2019; food-contact qualification remains dependent on FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Terminal product types are moulded sheets from 10 mm to 200 mm gauge, round and rectangular bars, precision-machined pump wear plates, chute liners, bearing pads, and chemical tank baffles.

Gel-spun fibre drawing and solvent retention limits in paraffin oil systems

A gel-spinning line for HXM 50100-02 differs from conventional thermoplastic extrusion in that the polyethylene is dissolved in a high-boiling paraffin oil or decalin at a concentration of 6–12 wt% polymer before extrusion through a spinneret; the gel fibre is subsequently extracted and hot-drawn to produce high-tenacity molecular orientation. The polymer-to-solvent ratio is the principal formulation control: below 6 wt% solution viscosity is too low for stable gel filament formation, while above 12 wt% the solution becomes highly elastic and die pressure instability increases. Twin-screw dissolving equipment with L/D 36:1 is operated at 180–240 °C, with a positive-displacement gear pump metering the solution into a spinneret immersed in a quench bath held below 10 °C; spin finish is applied at 0.3–1.0 wt% on fibre weight to control electrostatic and filament-to-filament adhesion during drawing. Extraction with heptane or methylene chloride removes residual paraffin oil before hot drawing at 120–150 °C, at total draw ratios from 20:1 to 60:1 depending on denier and end-use. Compliance for ballistic panels is evaluated under NIJ 0101.06; cut-resistant gloves are tested to EN 388; yarn tensile properties are measured under ASTM D2256-18. Terminal finished product types are high-tenacity ropes, slings, netting, aquaculture lines, cut-resistant gloves, and ballistic protective panels.

For backwashable porous filter elements in aggressive aqueous streams, HXM 50100-02 powder is vibrated or air-classified into mould cavities and heated without applied compaction to create an interconnected porous structure. The charge formulation is 100 wt% HXM 50100-02; when larger pore throats are required, 10–20 wt% of a leachable porogen is dry-blended, but published data for this specific configuration in porogen-loaded sintered HXM 50100-02 are limited. Sintering is performed at 180–200 °C for 30–60 min per 25 mm of section thickness, with no more than 2 MPa of contact pressure so that densification remains incomplete and pore channels remain open. Pore size distribution and bubble point are verified by ASTM F316-03(2019); density and porosity are determined by ASTM D792-20; food-contact and pharmaceutical fluid-contact compliance is assessed under FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Terminal finished product types are porous filter discs, filter tubes, sparging stones, pneumatic silencer elements, and vent plugs used in acid/caustic dosing and high-purity water systems.

When HXM 50100-02 is dispersed into polyolefin separator formulations, shutdown temperature and puncture resistance interact non-linearly

Below 3 wt% additions, the influence of UHMWPE on microporous membrane puncture resistance tends to be indistinguishable from the HDPE or PP reference film, while loadings above 15 wt% increase melt elasticity and film thickness variation during dry-stretch processing. In dry-process separator extrusion, HXM 50100-02 is added at 3–15 wt% to the HDPE or PP matrix, cast into a precursor film, annealed at 110–130 °C, cold-stretched 20–50%, hot-stretched 100–200%, and heat-set to produce a microporous membrane between 12 µm and 25 µm. The addition ratio is governed by the competing requirements of puncture resistance and uniform pore orientation; published data for HXM 50100-02 specifically in separator films are limited, but industrial blending studies on UHMWPE/HDPE systems indicate the onset of processing instability occurs near 15 wt% at 200–230 °C melt temperature. Compliance and safety qualification for lithium-ion cell separators include ASTM D882-18 for thin-film tensile properties, UL 1642 for cell-level abuse testing, IEC 62660-3:2022 for traction cell performance, and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 for battery due-diligence and restrictions. Terminal finished product types are lithium-ion battery separator membranes, ceramic-coated separator substrates, and high-safety separator films for EV and consumer cells.

Compounding trials on 45 mm counter-rotating twin-screw extruders with L/D 36:1 have shown that HXM 50100-02 must be introduced through a side feeder rather than the main throat to avoid segregation and feed blockage; melt temperature is maintained between 190 °C and 230 °C, and screw speed is limited to 200–500 rpm to minimise shear-induced chain scission of the high-molecular-weight species. In thermoplastic wear-resistant compounds based on HDPE or PP, the addition ratio is 2–10 wt%; in rubber formulations, 5–20 phr is used to reduce surface friction and improve abrasion resistance. The material is added after high-surface-area fillers have been dispersed, and it is not combined with amine-based additives because amine degradation products can accelerate oxidative chain scission at processing temperatures above 220 °C. Compliance is established under REACH Article 33 for SVHC content below 0.1% w/w, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II for restricted substances, and ASTM D4020-18 for the virgin UHMWPE component. Terminal finished product types are conveyor rollers, idler wheels, gear wheels, seal lips, bushings, and modified HDPE wear components used in materials handling and agricultural machinery.
