When landfill closure caps are specified with a medium density polyethylene geomembrane having an environmental stress crack resistance value of >1,000 h under ASTM D1693 Condition B, K307 is dry-blended with a 40% carbon black masterbatch to reach 2.0–2.5 wt% final carbon black content. The pellet blend is fed to a 150 mm, 30:1 L/D single-screw extruder with a barrier screw and Maddock mixing section. Melt temperature at the die lip is controlled at 232–250°C. A 2.5 m wide flat die feeds a three-roll polishing stack with roll temperatures set at 65°C for the primary roll and 55°C for the secondary roll. Sheet thickness is set at 1.0–1.5 mm with gauge variation held to ±5%. In-line melt filtration uses an 80/120/80 mesh screen pack. Pressure drop at the screen changer is recorded continuously; a rise above 15 MPa at 100 kg/h throughput indicates carbon black agglomeration and triggers a skip lot for ASTM D5596 dispersion grading. Finished rolls of 7.5 m width are fabricated into cap panels by dual hot wedge welders at 380–420°C.
Acceptance testing on the extruded sheet includes density by ASTM D1505 at 0.936–0.940 g/cm³, melt index by ASTM D1238 at 190°C/2.16 kg of 0.65–0.75 g/10 min, and carbon black content by ASTM D4218. Oxidative induction time after sheet extrusion is measured by ASTM D3895; production lots are monitored against a control lot rather than a fixed minimum. The cap liner is seamed with a dual-track wedge, and the air channel is tested at 200 kPa for 10 s. Peel separation is evaluated by ASTM D6392; production audit limits require failure outside the sheet plane, not in the weld plane. The installed membrane satisfies thickness and carbon black criteria referenced in closure permits issued under 40 CFR 258.60. K307 is not specified for primary landfill base liners where prescriptive state rules may mandate 1.5 mm HDPE and GRI-GM13.
Pregnant leach solution in copper heap leach ponds typically carries pH 1.0–2.0 sulfuric acid at 40–50°C. In this service, K307 sheet is formulated with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black and no calcium carbonate filler because acid attack at exposed edges would generate gas and surface chalk. Sheet thickness is 2.0 mm for base pads and 1.5 mm for side slopes above the sump. The extrusion line uses a 120 mm grooved-feed extruder and a 2.8 m flat die. Texturing embosses 0.25 mm asperities to increase interface friction against a geotextile cushion. The sheet is wound at 10–15 N/cm tension to avoid blocking in the roll core.

Qualification for mining solution pond liners includes immersion testing by ASTM D5747 in site-specific lixiviant at 55°C for 120 days. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; therefore, a site-specific test coupon program is required before final thickness selection. Seaming uses hot wedge welding at 420°C; air-pressure testing is performed at 210 kPa for 10 s. Peel separation strength is measured by ASTM D6392. Concentrated nitric acid and fuming sulfuric acid are outside the service envelope. Stress crack growth under sustained loads is evaluated by ASTM D5397, which is more relevant than ASTM D1693 for anchored slope details.
Agricultural manure storage cells in freeze-thaw regions require a liner that survives subgrade movement without brittle cracking at -25°C. K307 is extruded into 1.0–1.5 mm black sheet with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black for ultraviolet stability. Longitudinal orientation is controlled by draw ratio 1.05:1 to preserve bidirectional elongation. Brittleness temperature for the compounded sheet remains <-75°C per ASTM D746. Liner installations in the United States typically reference NRCS Conservation Practice Standard 313 for waste storage facility liner thickness and soil cover.
Factory panels are joined by hot wedge welders using 1.0 mm gap settings, and a 200 kPa air channel test is performed on all fusion seams. Anchor trenches require 0.3 m burial depth and 150 mm cover sand to prevent puncture from hoof traffic. The finished liner is used to contain dairy manure slurry with solids content up to 12% and free ammonia concentrations below 500 mg/L. Above that concentration, chemical resistance testing according to ASTM D5747 is required. K307 is not recommended for silage leachate containment without site-specific immersion testing because lactic acid at low pH may stress-crack weld zones.
Irrigation canal and balancing reservoir liners often omit cushion geotextile to reduce capital cost. Under this condition, the membrane must absorb sharp subgrade stones without puncture. K307 is processed into 0.5–1.0 mm smooth or single-sided textured sheet on a 90 mm, 28:1 L/D extruder with a 1.8 m slot die. Puncture resistance at 1.0 mm thickness is specified by many project documents as ≥350 N per ASTM D4833. Tear strength is measured at ≥100 N per ASTM D1004. In subgrades where cobble size exceeds 25 mm, a 200 g/m² nonwoven geotextile is still required; the membrane alone does not replace cushion layer in angular aggregate.
Seams are welded by extrusion fillet welding at 260–280°C for biaxial flexibility at transitions. Weld tensile strength must exceed 80% of parent sheet yield per ASTM D6392. Finished panels are deployed in canal prism grades with 1.5:1 side slopes and covered with 100 mm concrete or soil to reduce UV exposure. Bureau of Reclamation and state water boards often require geomembrane thickness and sampling frequency under ASTM D4354. For K307, lot-to-lot melt index variation is monitored against a control band to support consistent die flow and thickness control across multi-day panel fabrication campaigns.
Secondary containment for diesel storage tanks and chemical day tanks is regulated under 40 CFR 112.7. K307 is fabricated into 1.5 mm black textured sheet with 0.25 mm embossed asperities and cut into sump liners and spill deck pans. Fabrication uses hot wedge welds with 1.0 mm overlap and 420°C wedge temperature. Seam continuity is verified by vacuum box testing with a 35 kPa vacuum held for 10 s. Panels are prefabricated off-site with an automatic wedge welder; field seams are limited to perimeter terminations to reduce weld density. Sump liners are hydrostatically loaded with water to 50 mm above the highest seam for 24 h before inspection.
Chemical compatibility must be validated for the stored liquid using ASTM D5747 immersion for 120 days at the maximum expected storage temperature. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. K307 is generally suitable for dilute acids, bases, and salt brines but is not specified for strong oxidizing acids, aromatic solvents, or chlorinated solvents because polyethylene softens or stress cracks under those conditions. Leak location surveys are conducted before service under ASTM D7240. Anchorage and penetration details follow the SPCC plan and are tested by the same vacuum box procedure after field modifications.
Aquaculture raceways and recirculating tank liners use K307 without slip or antistatic additives that could leach into culture water. The base resin is manufactured to comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers in food-contact applications. For fish culture, extrusion of 0.75–1.0 mm black or natural sheet is carried out with a 90 mm extruder and melt temperature 220–240°C. Surface roughness is kept below 0.1 mm Ra to allow biofilm removal by pressure washing.
Seams are butt-fusion welded with a 220°C heater plate; tensile testing of seam coupons must exceed 85% of parent sheet yield. The liner is selected for low-temperature impact and cleanability rather than gas barrier properties. Finished products include tank liners, raceway liners, and floating covers for indoor fingerling tanks. Black sheet is used outdoors for UV resistance; natural sheet is used indoors where light transmission is not a concern.
