Application of Chevron Phillips Marlex MDPE HHM TR-418Q

Conversion of Chevron Phillips Marlex MDPE HHM TR-418Q into geomembrane sheet on production-scale high-output lines begins with a grooved-feed single-screw extruder of 30:1 to 36:1 L/D equipped with a barrier screw and a static mixer ahead of a deckled slot die. The resin is supplied as natural or UV-stabilised pellets with a nominal density of 0.940 g/cm³ per ASTM D1505 and a melt flow rate of 0.42 g/10 min at 190°C/2.16 kg per ASTM D1238. A carbon-black masterbatch is gravimetrically dosed at 2.0 wt% to 2.5 wt% for outdoor exposure, and closed-loop regrind is held below 20 wt% to preserve weld consistency. No predrying is required when ambient relative humidity remains below 55%, but in tropical plant environments above 65% RH, regrind fractions above 20 wt% are hopper-dried at 65°C for 2 h to prevent surface pitting from moisture volatilisation. Melt temperature is controlled at 210°C to 232°C with die zones set 5°C to 8°C higher than the front barrel to suppress melt fracture; screw cooling is applied only when motor amperage exceeds 85% of drive capacity. A die gap of 2.2 mm to 2.5 mm yields 1.5 mm sheet after chrome-roll polishing at 72°C to 85°C. The resulting sheet exhibits tensile break strength of 22 MPa to 26 MPa and elongation at break of 700% to 850% when tested per ASTM D6693, and puncture resistance of 450 N to 520 N per ASTM D4833. Hot-wedge seam welding on site uses a temperature envelope of 380°C to 410°C with travel speeds of 0.8 m/min to 1.2 m/min; destructive weld evaluation follows ASTM D4437 for peel separation and ASTM D6392 for shear. Environmental stress crack resistance of >1000 h under ASTM D1693 Condition B in 100% Igepal CO-630 supports long-term synthetic leachate exposure, although published field data for double-liner systems using this specific resin grade remains limited.

Chemical Tank Lining: Asymmetric ESCR Demands in Continuous Immersion Service

HHM TR-418Q sheet for internal tank linings is extruded at 4 mm to 8 mm thickness and fabricated by butt-fusion welding with a 220°C to 235°C plate temperature and 0.15 MPa interfacial pressure for 60 s to 90 s per ISO 21307. The formulation is limited to 100 wt% virgin resin or 85 wt% virgin with 15 wt% closed-loop regrind; regrind above 15 wt% is excluded because the lower melt viscosity of reprocessed material increases bead width variability by 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm and reduces tensile decohesion energy below 400 kJ/m² in ISO 13953:2001 weld tests. Continuous immersion tests in 5% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium hydroxide, and 30% sodium chloride solution are run for 90 days at 23°C and 50°C per ASTM D543; mass gain remains below 0.5% at 23°C and below 2.5% at 50°C for the acid case, while dimensional change is under 0.3%. The ESCR value exceeding 1000 h under ASTM D1693 Condition B avoids the rapid brittle transition observed in lower-molecular-weight MDPE when exposed to aqueous surfactant solutions. Hydrostatic wall stress for spiral-wound liners is evaluated under ASTM D2837; HHM TR-418Q sheet welds sustain hoop stress of 6.0 MPa to 8.0 MPa at 20°C for 1,000 h, but long-term creep data beyond 10,000 h for this specific configuration is limited. For potable water contact, compliance is claimed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation 10/2011 when produced with food-contact-compliant stabiliser packages.

Thermoforming HHM TR-418Q sheet into automotive rear cargo trays and underbody shields on a shuttle press with quartz radiant heaters requires a surface temperature of 132°C to 138°C, measured by IR pyrometer; below 128°C, plug-assisted forming produces radial edge tears, while above 142°C, sag on a 1.2 m × 1.8 m sheet exceeds 50 mm and local wall thinning falls below 55% of initial gauge. A 3 mm sheet formulation uses 75 wt% virgin resin and 25 wt% controlled in-house regrind, with no filler or processing aid; for underbody shields, 1.5 wt% carbon-black masterbatch is dry-blended. Mold temperature is held at 55°C to 65°C with oil thermolators; after demolding, machined specimens are tested per ASTM D638 Type IV and show tensile yield retention of 20 MPa to 22 MPa. Mold shrinkage after 24 h is 0.018 mm/mm to 0.022 mm/mm in the machine direction and 0.014 mm/mm to 0.018 mm/mm transverse per ASTM D955. Finished parts are soaked in diesel fuel per ASTM D543 for 70 h at 23°C, after which tensile strength retention is 88% to 93%; low-temperature multiaxial impact at -30°C is assessed per ASTM D3763 and yields total energy absorption of 18 J to 22 J on 3 mm sheet. Published data for this specific OEM-grade sheet configuration in instrumented impact at -40°C is limited.

What Limits Impact Strength Retention in Heavy-Duty Dunnage Trays?

Reusable dunnage trays assembled from 6 mm to 10 mm HHM TR-418Q structural sheet are evaluated for cold impact per ISO 6603-2 at -20°C, with puncture energy of 35 J to 45 J before crack initiation. The high-molecular-weight polyethylene with a nominal density of 0.940 g/cm³ yields a notched Izod impact result of no break at 23°C per ASTM D256, but at -30°C the failure mode transitions to a mixture of ductile hinges and brittle crack propagation when trays contain sharp 90° corner welds with insufficient radius. Fabrication data from production lines indicates that a minimum external corner radius of 8 mm and hot-air weld travel speed of 0.5 m/min with 4 mm round polyethylene rod at 360°C to 380°C prevents stress concentration at the weld root. The sheet formulation is 85 wt% virgin resin and 15 wt% closed-loop regrind; no filler, flame retardant, or impact modifier is used. Finished trays are loaded to 1,500 kg static mass at 23°C for 28 days per ASTM D2990 tensile creep; creep strain remains below 1.2%. Chemical exposure to used engine oil and transmission fluid is run per ASTM D543 for 500 h at 50°C; tensile strength retention is 85% to 90%, but published specific data for this resin in hot glycol coolant immersion is limited.

For food-sector material handling, HHM TR-418Q sheet is fabricated into conveyor guide rails and cutting-table surfaces at 8 mm to 15 mm thickness by compression routing and machined edges. The sheet formulation uses 100 wt% virgin resin when direct food contact is specified; closed-loop regrind may be added up to 10 wt% only if it is derived from the same food-contact-compliant production lot and stored in sealed bins to avoid cross-contamination. Compliance for direct food contact is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011, with overall migration below 10 mg/dm² in 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol, and olive oil simulants at 40°C for 10 days. Cut surfaces are flame-polished with a propane/air torch at flame temperatures of 1,200°C to 1,400°C, reducing surface roughness from Ra 3.2 µm to Ra 0.8 µm and removing microfluff that would otherwise retain organic residues. Sanitiser resistance is checked by repeated wipe exposure to 200 ppm sodium hypochlorite and 70% isopropanol for 1,000 cycles; no visible surface crazing is observed at 20× magnification. The resin's Vicat softening point of 119°C per ASTM D1525 limits continuous wash-down steam exposure to 90°C or lower; above 95°C, localised softening at bolt holes produces creep beyond 0.5 mm when clamping force exceeds 50 N·m. Published specific migration data for this resin grade under repetitive-use conditions of 100°C is limited.

Pipe Jacketing and Manhole Liner Extrusion Window

HHM TR-418Q is extruded into 3 mm to 5 mm pipe jacketing sheet and spiral-wrapped over insulated steel lines in district heating and chemical transfer corridors. The formulation uses 2.5 wt% carbon-black masterbatch and 0.15 wt% hindered amine light stabiliser masterbatch, with regrind limited to 20 wt%; higher regrind levels reduce ring stiffness retention after 1,000 h UV exposure per ASTM G154 cycle 1. The outer jacket is evaluated for abrasion resistance per ISO 9352 Taber test using CS-10 wheels and 1,000 g load; mass loss is 25 mg to 35 mg per 1,000 cycles. The sheet is corrugated in-line using a vacuum calibrator with 0.08 MPa vacuum and water spray at 25°C; drawdown ratio is kept between 1.2 and 1.6 to avoid orientation-induced cracking. Manhole liner segments are butt-welded in situ with a 210°C to 230°C hot plate, then pressure-tested at 0.05 MPa air pressure with soap solution per EN 1277; no leakage is permitted at the weld for 15 min. Dimensional stability after 24 h at 80°C is tested per ASTM D648; shrinkage is below 0.5% in both axes. The ESCR value exceeding 1000 h under ASTM D1693 Condition B addresses sulfate-rich groundwater contact in manhole applications; however, published long-term creep rupture data for this resin below 0°C in jacketed piping is limited.
