Application of Chevron Phillips Chemical HDPE 9308

Injection molding of thin-walled dairy cups and deli containers with HDPE 9308 is executed on hydraulic toggle machines with clamp forces of 1 500–4 500 kN and screws of 20:1 to 24:1 L/D with a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1. Melt temperature is maintained at 200–235 °C, mould temperature at 10–30 °C, injection pressure at 60–90 MPa, hold pressure at 40–60 MPa, and back pressure at 0.5–1.0 MPa. Screw recovery speed is set to 80–120 rpm to avoid excessive shear heating above 245 °C. For a 500 mL round container, shot weight is 8–25 g and gate diameter is 1.0–2.0 mm with a hot-runner drop. The formulation consists of 100% virgin HDPE 9308 or a dry blend containing up to 15% clean in-house regrind of the same container lot, with 1–2 wt% titanium dioxide masterbatch and 0.05–0.10 wt% slip masterbatch where denesting requires a coefficient of friction below 0.40 by ASTM D1894-14. If material is transferred from cold silo storage at a temperature below dew point, hopper drying at 70–80 °C for 1–2 h prevents surface condensation defects, but pre-drying is not normally required for HDPE 9308. Food-contact conformity is assigned to the olefin polymer family under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c); migration verification is performed according to EU No 10/2011 with simulant D2 at 20 °C for 10 days. Shrinkage after 48 h at 23 °C is measured by ISO 294-4; the acceptance range for round containers is 1.5–2.5% in the flow direction and 1.0–2.0% transverse. The terminal parts are thin-wall yogurt cups, dairy tubs, and deli containers with sidewall thickness of 0.5–1.5 mm.

Why do 20 L pails made from HDPE 9308 require controlled pack-and-hold profiles for sidewall flatness?

Injection-moulded 20 L open-head pails exhibit sidewall sink and out-of-round because the high-flow character of HDPE 9308 reduces melt viscosity and accelerates gate freeze at the base diaphragm. Pack-and-hold is profiled with hold pressure at 35–55 MPa and hold time of 6–10 s to compensate for volumetric shrinkage. Melt temperature is set to 200–240 °C, mould temperature to 10–25 °C, injection speed to 80–120 mm/s, and back pressure to 0.4–0.8 MPa. A clamp force of 4 000–7 000 kN is required for a projected area of 800–1 200 cm². The formulation uses 85–100% virgin HDPE 9308 and 0–15% closed-loop regrind from the same pail line, plus 0.5–1.5 wt% color masterbatch. If the pail is used for food contact, only masterbatches with positive migration data under EU No 10/2011 are permitted; if used for paint or lubricants, the regrind ratio is limited to 15% unless drop and stack tests are repeated. Stack-load performance is tested per ISO 2234:2015 at 40 °C for 28 days, and drop impact is tested at -18 °C with a drop height of 1.2 m per ISO 16101:2004. Pail handles are separately tested by a pull-out force of 500 N for 5 s to verify gate area integrity. The terminal parts are 20 L open-head pails for paints, detergent powders, lubricants, and food ingredients.

Structural crates, tote boxes, and returnable logistics units molded from HDPE 9308

Structural crates and tote boxes with ribbed base grids and sidewall gussets are molded at melt temperatures of 210–250 °C, mould temperatures of 15–30 °C, injection pressures of 80–120 MPa, hold pressures of 50–70 MPa, and back pressures of 0.6–1.2 MPa. The melt flow rate of HDPE 9308 is verified under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg; the injection window assumes a high-flow grade with melt viscosity suitable for thin-wall and ribbed tools. This flow level permits filling of multi-ribbed tools with flow paths up to 600 mm if the gate is located at the base centre and the nominal wall is not below 1.8 mm. For a 600 mm × 400 mm × 300 mm tote, clamp force is 12 000–18 000 kN and cooling time is 15–30 s; a mould temperature of 20 °C is maintained to reduce warp. The formulation is 95–100% virgin HDPE 9308 and 0–5% closed-loop regrind, with 2–4 wt% color masterbatch; for outdoor service, 0.2–0.5 wt% UV stabilizer masterbatch and 0.1–0.2 wt% antioxidant masterbatch are added because unpigmented HDPE 9308 does not carry significant long-term UV stabilization beyond the base package. Flexural modulus is determined by ISO 178:2019 on a 4 mm thick specimen at 2 mm/min; tensile yield strength by ISO 527-2:2012 at 50 mm/min; notched Charpy impact by ISO 179-1:2010 at -30 °C. Warehouse loading is qualified by ISO 8611-1:2011 for pallet-mounted totes. The terminal parts are stackable beverage crates, returnable logistics totes, and closed-cell storage bins.

High-cavity cap molding with HDPE 9308 is run on electric injection moulding machines with 24–32 cavities and valve-gate hot-runner systems. Melt temperature is 200–230 °C, mould temperature 15–25 °C, injection time 0.4–0.8 s, hold pressure 40–60 MPa, and back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa. A 28 mm tamper-evident beverage cap with a shell wall of 0.8–1.2 mm is molded at a cycle time of 4–6 s. The formulation is 100% virgin HDPE 9308 or up to 10% in-house regrind from the same cap line, with 0.5–1.0 wt% color masterbatch where opacity is required. If the cap is used with fatty foods or dairy, slip masterbatch is restricted to 0.05–0.1 wt% and must be erucamide-free or organoleptic panel tested. Dimensional ovality of the cap shell is measured by ISO 1191:2012; strip torque and release torque are measured by ASTM D2063-12. The melt flow of HDPE 9308 permits short injection times in high-cavity tools, but gate blush appears at injection speeds above 150 mm/s; the speed is limited to 80–120 mm/s for optical caps. The terminal parts are tamper-evident beverage caps, snap-on closures, and cosmetic caps with 28–43 mm shell diameters.

Injection-moulded housewares and toy components; thick-section freeze-off risks in HDPE 9308

Housewares and toy components with nominal wall sections of 2.0–5.0 mm require low melt temperature and extended cooling to avoid sink marks and differential shrinkage. Melt temperature is 195–220 °C, mould temperature 10–25 °C, injection pressure 70–100 MPa, hold pressure 45–65 MPa, hold time 8–20 s, and back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa. Cooling time is a function of wall thickness squared; for a 4.0 mm wall, the required cooling time is 12–18 s with cooling water at 10–12 °C. The formulation is 98–100% virgin HDPE 9308, with 1–3 wt% color masterbatch; for toy parts, only pigments with EN 71-3 migration of elements below the specified limits are used. The base polymer is not a formulated toy-grade compound; compliance with EN 71-3 depends on the masterbatch and processing aid package. Mechanical acceptance includes tensile yield by ISO 527-2:2012, flexural modulus by ISO 178:2019, and Charpy notched impact by ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C. The terminal parts are storage boxes, toy structural parts, and appliance housings with snap-fit features.

When HDPE 9308 is used for injection-moulded automotive fluid reservoirs, coolant aging tests supersede standard tensile data

Injection-moulded windshield washer reservoirs and coolant expansion bottles from HDPE 9308 are produced with melt temperature 210–240 °C, mould temperature 20–35 °C, injection pressure 80–110 MPa, hold pressure 50–70 MPa, and clamp force 8 000–15 000 kN depending on part size. A washer reservoir of 1.5–4 L is molded in two shells and hot-plate welded at 220–240 °C interfacial temperature with a weld bead of 1.5–3.0 mm. The formulation is 100% virgin HDPE 9308 with 1–2 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant masterbatch; regrind is limited to 10% unless validated by 300 h heat aging. Chemical resistance is tested in 50% ethylene glycol at 100 °C for 1 000 h, followed by leak testing at 25 kPa for 5 min and burst testing at 125 kPa. Thermal shock cycling from -40 °C to 95 °C for 100 cycles is used to validate weld and gate regions; a stress-whitening depth above 0.5 mm at the weld is a rejection criterion. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; lot-specific weld strength and chemical resistance data must be generated before series production. The terminal parts are windshield washer reservoirs, coolant expansion tanks, and under-hood fluid reservoirs of 0.5–4 L.
