As an accredited Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 factory, we enforce strict quality protocols—every batch undergoes rigorous testing to ensure consistent efficacy and safety standards.
| Packing | Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 is packaged in 25 kg moisture-barrier paper bags, palletized for industrial shipment. |
| Container Loading (20′ FCL) | Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 loaded in a 20′ FCL dry container, palletized in moisture-resistant bags, evenly distributed and securely stowed. |
| Shipping | Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 is a non-hazardous UHMWPE powder and is not regulated for transport. Ship in sealed, moisture-resistant original bags or drums, protected from moisture, contamination, direct sunlight, and packaging damage. Avoid excessive heat and handle as a combustible dust per local regulations. |
| Storage | Store Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, flames, and strong oxidizers. Keep containers tightly closed to prevent moisture and contamination. Minimize dust generation and accumulation, use grounding/bonding where dust may form, and do not smoke. Protect from direct sunlight and follow local regulations. |
| Shelf Life | Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 typically has a 2-year shelf life when stored dry, unopened, and below 30°C in original packaging. |
In a wet-process lithium-ion battery separator line where Celanese GUR UHMWPE X 240 is used as the UHMWPE fraction in an HDPE/UHMWPE blend, the resin is first compounded with paraffinic process oil at loadings of 60–75 wt% relative to total feed. HDPE to GUR X 240 weight ratios in wet-process separator formulations commonly range from 90:10 to 70:30; below 10 wt% UHMWPE the puncture resistance improvement becomes marginal, while above 30 wt% the gel-particle density and melt pressure upstream of the screen changer increase to the point of line instability. The blend is plastified in a corotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 52:1 and segmented mixing elements; barrel set points from zone 2 onward are maintained between 160 °C and 210 °C, with the final mixing zones kept below 220 °C to limit thermo-oxidative chain scission. Because the ultra-high molar mass fraction does not form a conventional melt under ASTM D1238, gear-pump inlet pressure is used as the control signal for gel homogeneity. Extruded sheet cast from a coat-hanger die with a lip gap of 0.4–1.0 mm is quenched on a chill roll at 15–30 °C to freeze the oil-swollen gel structure before extraction. The oil is extracted with a low-boiling aliphatic solvent, after which the membrane is stretched uniaxially or biaxially at 90–125 °C and heat-set at 120–135 °C. Final separator thickness is typically 9–25 µm; Gurley permeability is measured per JIS P 8117 and tensile and puncture behaviour are characterized under ASTM D882. Screen packs incorporating 200/400/800 mesh layers clog rapidly when oil absorption in the GUR X 240 powder is incomplete, so the dry blend is routinely preconditioned in a heated ribbon mixer at 80–100 °C for 60–120 min before extrusion.
GUR X 240 is processed into gel-spun multifilament yarn through a paraffin oil or decalin solution route. The polymer is dissolved at 8–12 wt% solids in a temperature-controlled twin-screw dissolver with barrel zones held at 130–180 °C. The solution is filtered through sintered metal packs and extruded through a spinneret with capillary diameters of 0.5–1.0 mm into an air gap, then quenched in a water bath at 5–20 °C. After gel filament winding, the solvent is extracted in an ultrasonic or countercurrent bath, and the dry gel is subsequently hot-drawn in multiple stages to total draw ratios of 30:1 to 60:1. Published data for commercial gel-spun UHMWPE fibers report tenacities of 3.0–4.0 GPa and moduli of 90–130 GPa; published data for this specific GUR X 240 configuration is limited, so yarn producers validate grade substitution by pilot spinning before line qualification. The draw ratio ceiling is governed by molecular chain entanglement as well as residual oil content: if extraction leaves more than 0.1–0.2 wt% of high-viscosity process oil, filament fusion, capstan slippage, and strand breakage appear between 45:1 and 50:1 on typical lines. Tension control applies ASTM D885 for yarn tensile testing, while ISO 2062 is used for single-end breaking force in incoming quality checks.
Ram extrusion of GUR X 240 powder into rectangular stock for conveyor wear strips operates by intermittent compaction rather than screw plasticisation. The powder is metered into a feed hopper with a horizontal force-fed compactor and driven into a heated die barrel maintained at 190–220 °C; the ram pressure at the forming cone is usually held between 20 MPa and 60 MPa for sections from 30 mm to 120 mm thickness. The back-pressure plate and a water-calibrated cooling jacket control axial shrinkage and centreline porosity. Because GUR X 240 has no measurable melt flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, processing windows are determined by ram velocity, dwell time and die temperature rather than shear viscosity. A barrel residence time above 20 min at 220 °C leads to visible yellowing at the core and a measurable loss in elongation at break, so line operators reduce barrel set points when ram velocity falls below 0.05 m/min. Machined wear rails and chain guides from this stock are specified under ASTM D4020 for natural UHMWPE shapes or ISO 11542-1. Sand-slurry abrasion and kinetic coefficient of friction against polished steel are the key acceptance properties; unfilled UHMWPE typically exhibits dynamic friction near 0.10–0.15 and wear rates measured by ASTM G65 are used for mine-site approval. The material is not recommended for continuous service above 80 °C under load.
Because GUR X 240 powder enters the sinter cycle as a dry, high-molar-mass solid with no measurable melt flow, porosity is preserved while particle necks form. The powder with a controlled d50 in the 100–150 µm range is spread in a mould cavity and compacted cold at 5–10 MPa, then sintered at 200–210 °C for 15–30 min per 10 mm of sheet thickness. Final porosity is typically 30–50% and can be adjusted through particle size fraction, compaction pressure and sintering dwell. Bubbling and non-uniform permeability occur when the powder contains an excess of particles below 50 µm, because the fine fraction fills the interstitial volume before neck growth is complete. Pore size distribution is checked by bubble-point method under ASTM F316; air permeability is reported in s/100 cm³ using a Gurley densometer, with acceptance typically 3–15 s/100 cm³ for suction box covers. In paper machine dewatering service the sheet is machined to a thickness of 6–12 mm and must tolerate continuous contact with papermaking stock at pH 7–9 and temperatures below 60 °C. Operational boundaries include organic solvent exposure: ketones and aromatic hydrocarbons can swell the sintered structure and reduce dimensional stability, so the material is not accepted for solvent-laden vacuum extraction duties.
Food contact conveyor guide rails machined from GUR X 240 ram-extruded stock are placed into service under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 when the final component is not intended for cooking or high-temperature sterilization. The base polyolefin composition falls within the olefin polymer clearance, and the absence of plasticizers, stabilizers, or slip agents in the natural polymer grade simplifies compliance documentation. Overall migration into food simulants is evaluated under EU 10/2011 with an acceptance limit of 10 mg/dm²; for fatty food simulants D1 and D2, migration of low-molar-mass oligomers is the critical variable. Machined guide rails are normally supplied with a surface roughness Ra below 0.8 µm after final trimming to reduce product contact and cleanability issues. The operating boundary for hot-fill applications is 60 °C continuous, with short excursions to 80 °C acceptable only where mechanical load is low; above this range the modulus drops sufficiently to cause creep in bolt-clamped support points. In dry snack conveying, dust accumulation is controlled by wiping with food-approved detergents; in wet meat and poultry lines, chlorinated alkaline cleaners at pH 10–12 at 50–60 °C are compatible. Materials with intentionally added recycled UHMWPE or regrind from unknown sources are excluded from this food-contact use unless revalidated.

In mineral slurry and chemical transfer service, unfilled GUR X 240 components machined from ram-extruded or compression-moulded blanks are installed as impeller wear liners, volute liners, seal rings and pipeline wear plates. Compression-moulded plaques typically exhibit notched Charpy impact values above 50 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1, providing resistance to impact from entrained solids in slurries with particle sizes below 2 mm. In caustic environments such as 30% sodium hydroxide at 40–60 °C the polymer is chemically unaffected; in sulphuric acid at 20% and temperatures below 40 °C, weight change is generally below 1% after 30 days of immersion, although published data for this specific grade configuration is limited, requiring end-user immersion testing per ASTM D543. The operational boundary is defined by aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, which plasticize and soften the surface, and by strong oxidizing acids above 60 °C. Pump liners are toleranced with a clearance of 0.10–0.20 mm per 100 mm of impeller diameter to accommodate differential thermal expansion; at service temperatures above 60 °C, thermal expansion and creep under bolt loading can reduce running clearances and cause rubbing contact. Wet slurry abrasion mass loss is typically compared using the slurry abrasion test method ASTM G75, while hardness is monitored at 60–70 Shore D per ISO 868.
