Application of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4523

In lithium-ion separator converting, Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4523 is typically compounded with a high-boiling paraffinic plasticizer at plasticizer/resin mass ratios from 60/40 to 70/30. The powder and plasticizer are metered through loss-in-weight feeders into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 40–52. Barrel temperatures are maintained in the 150–180 °C band to form a homogeneous gel while limiting oxidative chain scission. The gel is cast through a coat-hanger die at 25–60 mm/min onto chilled rollers. Biaxial stretching then occurs at 110–125 °C in a direct or sequential tenter frame. Plasticizer extraction with n-heptane or dichloromethane is conducted in counter-current wash baths to reduce residual oil below 200 ppm. Heat setting at 120–130 °C stabilizes pore geometry and reduces transverse shrinkage.

Separator films produced from UHMWPE gel-cast systems typically exhibit thicknesses of 9–25 µm, porosity of 38–45%, and Gurley values of 100–300 s/100 cm³. Tensile strength, measured under ASTM D882, regularly falls between 120–180 MPa machine direction and 100–150 MPa transverse direction. Shutdown behavior occurs near 130–135 °C, corresponding to the crystalline melting onset measured by differential scanning calorimetry under ASTM D3418. Manufacturers may require pre-drying at 80–100 °C when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, because moisture promotes inconsistent gel viscosity and pinhole formation. The bulk density of the powder, commonly reported in the 0.40–0.48 g/cm³ range, controls feed intake and air entrapment. Entrapped air forms microvoids that propagate as biaxial tears during tentering. Published data for commercial separator films produced exclusively from GUR 4523 is limited; separator performance depends heavily on plasticizer composition, draw ratio, extraction efficiency, and heat-set temperature.

Ram Extrusion Window for Wear-Resistant Profiles and Guide Rails

Ram extrusion is required because the high molar mass of GUR UHMWPE 4523 prevents screw-and-barrel plastication. The manufacturer reports density near 0.930 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1 and viscosity number near 2800 mL/g under ISO 1628-3. The powder is pre-dried at 80–100 °C for 4–6 h when ambient moisture exceeds 60% relative humidity. A horizontal reciprocating plunger compacts the powder at 8–15 MPa into a heated die block maintained in the 180–220 °C band. The die land length is typically 400–800 mm to promote particle fusion. Puller speed controls profile cross-section and surface finish. Cooling bath temperature is held at 20–40 °C. Profiles exhibit yield stress of 20–22 MPa and elongation at break greater than 250% under ISO 527-1/-2. Charpy double-notched impact exceeds 100 kJ/m² under ISO 11542-2. Wear-resistant guide rails, chain guides, star wheels, and scraper blades are cut from these profiles. ASTM D4020-18 provides cell classification for UHMWPE molding and extrusion materials.

The primary processing boundary is thermal oxidation above 220 °C, which yellows the profile and reduces impact toughness. No screw-extrusion recovery of GUR 4523 is possible without lowering molar mass through controlled degradation. Literature values for UHMWPE dry sliding against polished steel give a coefficient of friction of 0.10–0.20 when measured under ASTM D3702. Sand-slurry abrasion values under ISO 15527 are highly conditional on particle size, slurry concentration, and counterface roughness. Published data for GUR 4523-specific slurry wear in large-scale field service is limited. Oxidation inhibitors are not compounded into the resin; therefore converters using regrind must revalidate impact and color stability on a batch basis.

What Limits the Upper Draw Ratio in Gel-Spun Fibres Derived from Ultra-High Molar Mass Powder?

Gel-spun fibre lines running GUR UHMWPE 4523 dissolve the powder in paraffin oil at 10–18 wt% resin concentration. Dissolution is carried out in heated jacketed vessels or a co-rotating twin-screw extruder at 150–180 °C under a nitrogen blanket to limit oxygen uptake. The solution is filtered through 30–50 µm screen packs and extruded through spinnerets into an air gap and water quench. Gel filaments are then washed with trichloroethylene or n-heptane to reduce residual plasticizer below 0.1 wt%. Drawing of extracted gel fibres is performed in multi-stage hot-air ovens at 140–150 °C. Draw ratios ranging from 40 to 80 are common, but the upper limit is governed by entanglement density and spinneret shear history.

Higher molar mass generally increases theoretical tenacity, but also increases solution viscosity and suppresses segmental mobility during orientation. As a result, ultra-high molar mass grades often require lower spinning solids and slower draw profiles than lower molar mass grades. The tensile strength of UHMWPE fibre measured under ASTM D885 is typically 3.0–3.5 GPa, with modulus from 100 GPa to 130 GPa and elongation at break 2–4%. These outputs serve maritime ropes, ballistic panels, and cut-resistant gloves. The low glass transition temperature, below −100 °C as measured by dynamic mechanical analysis under ISO 6721-1, maintains fibre flexibility in cold environments. Published data for GUR 4523-specific fibre drawability is limited; converters generally optimize draw ratio, spinline tension, and extraction residence time on line.

When sintered porous sheets are specified for aeration sparging or membrane support duty, GUR UHMWPE 4523 powder is dry-blended with no polymer processing aid and filled into a mold cavity. Cold compaction at 2–5 MPa forms a preform. Sintering follows at 180–210 °C for 15–60 min, depending on wall thickness. The result is a porous panel with interconnected void channels of 10–100 µm and porosity from 30% to 50%. Pore size is characterized by bubble point per ASTM F316-03 or mercury intrusion porosimetry per ASTM D4284. The water contact angle of UHMWPE is typically 85–100° when measured by ASTM D5946, which reduces aqueous fouling in submerged aeration service.

Applications include pneumatic silencers, wastewater sparging plates, and vent membranes where solvent exposure excludes conventional polypropylene or polyvinylidene fluoride media. The principal constraint is surface skin on molded parts; skin layers reduce gas permeability and must be removed by skiving. Another limit is oxidative embrittlement during long-term exposure above 80 °C in air. Published data for GUR 4523-sintered filtration performance is limited; pore size distribution is sensitive to particle size distribution and mold temperature uniformity. Particle size shifts above 150 µm alter cold compaction density and require re-qualification of feed runners and preform tooling.

Compression-Molded Food-Contact Sheet, Oxidation Limits, and Regulatory Test Matrix

Compression molding of GUR UHMWPE 4523 starts with vacuum drying at 80–100 °C for 4–8 h. Powder is charged into a chrome-plated mold cavity and pressed at 5–10 MPa. Mold temperature is raised to 180–210 °C for 30–60 min under pressure, then cooled at 2–5 K/min to reduce residual stress. Sheets from 2 mm to 50 mm are used for conveyor wear strips, star wheels, and cutting boards in food-processing machinery. Compliance is assessed under US FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 with extraction tests in food simulants, and under EU Regulation 10/2011 with overall migration limited to 10 mg/dm². NSF/ANSI 51 listing is often requested for food-contact conveyor segments. 3-A Sanitary Standards require surface finish roughness not exceeding Ra 0.8 µm on product-contact faces.

The upper service temperature is limited by deformation under load; continuous service above 80 °C leads to creep and dimensional change. The grade should not be compounded with recycled UHMWPE unless regulatory revalidation is performed, because extractable contamination from post-industrial regrind can compromise migration limits. Cleaning with oxidizing agents at elevated temperature can cause chain scission and surface roughness. For European industrial supply, REACH Article 33 declarations for substances of very high concern above 0.1% w/w are not expected for virgin UHMWPE. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU heavy metal restrictions are not relevant to unfilled polyethylene sheet unless the sheet is incorporated into electrical or electronic equipment, in which case lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBBs, and PBDEs are tested by IEC 62321.

If Bulk Material Handling Liners Require Impact Resistance Below −40 °C

If bulk material handling liners require impact resistance below −40 °C, GUR UHMWPE 4523 exhibits ductile rather than brittle failure because the polymer has no glass transition within the service range and retains high energy absorption at low temperatures. Compression-molded liners of 6–25 mm thickness are installed in dump truck beds, silo cones, and chute walls. The linear thermal expansion coefficient is approximately 1.5–2.5 × 10⁻⁴ K⁻¹ when measured by thermomechanical analysis under ISO 11359-2, so slotted fastening holes and sliding clamp bars are specified to prevent buckling. Izod impact tests under ASTM D256 typically report no break at −40 °C for compression-molded UHMWPE specimens.

Abrasion resistance is measured under sand-slurry test protocols adapted from ISO 15527 or ASTM G75; published test values are conditional on slurry particle size, water flow rate, and impingement angle. Published data for GUR 4523-specific abrasion loss in large-scale field service is limited. The outer boundary for this application is dimensional stability: unbacked aluminum or steel substrate expands at roughly one-tenth the rate of the UHMWPE liner, requiring elastomeric pads, expansion slots, or floating fastener assemblies. Oxidation of liner surfaces is generally negligible below 60 °C, but repeated contact with hot bitumen or ash above 80 °C can embrittle the wearing face.
