Application of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4122

On a biaxially oriented microporous separator line, Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4122 is metered at 20–30 wt% into a high-torque corotating twin-screw compounder with L/D 40; the remaining 70–80 wt% is liquid paraffin, and a hindered-phenol/phosphite antioxidant is added at 0.1–0.5 wt% of polymer mass. The screw temperature profile from feed zone to discharge is 190–240°C, vacuum degassing is held at −0.09 MPa to −0.05 MPa, and the gel is delivered through a gear pump to a T-slot die at 8–12 MPa. Casting onto a chill roll at 20–50°C freezes the oil-polymer gel; sequential machine-direction and transverse-direction stretching at 90–115°C and 100–130°C uses first-stage and second-stage draw ratios of 4×4 to 7×7. Extraction with dichloromethane or n-hexane reduces residual oil to below 0.5 wt%, followed by heat setting at 125–138°C under controlled re-shrinkage. Compliance is tested under REACH 1907/2006 Annex XVII, RoHS 2011/65/EU, IEC 62660-3:2022 cell-level mechanical safety, ISO 527-3 film tensile, and ISO 15901-1 mercury porosimetry. Terminal product forms are 5–20 µm single-layer or ceramic-coated polyethylene separators for lithium-ion cells. Incoming powder viscosity number is verified under ISO 1628-3; lot-to-lot excursions outside the supplier specification alter screen-pack differential pressure and draw resonance on the L/D 40 line. Pilot-line data indicate polymer-to-oil ratios below 15 wt% cause transverse-direction splitting during stretching, while ratios above 30 wt% induce die-lip gel fracture and Gurley permeability above 400 s/100 mL at 16 µm.

Where Does Solvent Retention in Gel-Spun Fiber Become a Draw Limit?

Gel spinning of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4122 uses 2–8 wt% polymer dissolved at 150–180°C in decalin or aliphatic white oil; the solution contains 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant on polymer mass. The solution is extruded through spinnerets with capillary L/D 8–15, drawn through an air gap of 8–25 mm, and quenched in water or ethanol at 10–25°C. As-spun gel filaments are extracted with heptane or dichloromethane until residual solvent falls below 50 ppm for high-tenacity output, then hot-drawn at 135–150°C on multi-stage Godet stands to total draw ratios of 30–60:1; the first post-extraction draw stage is conventionally limited to 10–20:1 to avoid filament fibrillation. Compliance testing includes ISO 2062 yarn tensile, ASTM D885 industrial yarn methods, EN 388:2016 cut-resistant glove liner classification, and NIJ 0101.06 ballistic package evaluation. Terminal products are cut-resistant gloves, mooring and lifting ropes, fishing lines, and ballistic composite laminates. Field data on commercial gel-spinning frames show residual solvent above 150 ppm converts tensile failure into draw-line fibrillation, and tenacity measured by ISO 2062 may drop below 3.0 GPa; published data for this specific GUR 4122 dissolution configuration is limited.

When Ram Extrusion Pressure Falls Below 70 MPa, Fusion Defects Appear

In bottle conveying applications, Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4122 powder is ram-extruded at 100 wt% virgin feedstock, with screened internal regrind limited to 10 wt% because wider particle-size distributions shift compaction density and create cold fusion. The process uses a reciprocating ram extruder with heated barrel at 200–230°C, die body at 160–195°C, and ram pressure between 70–140 MPa; output speeds of 0.08–0.25 m/min are typical for solid rectangular and circular profiles. Unlike conventional polyethylene screw extrusion, ram extrusion approximates plug-flow compaction and sintering, and no screw plastication stage is present. Pressure control must remain within ±5 MPa of the setpoint during steady-state running; intermittent ram retraction without pressure compensation produces transverse fusion lines. Incoming powder bulk density is checked according to ASTM D1895 Method A; batch-to-batch variation outside the datasheet range shifts ram-pressure response and creates compaction discontinuities. Compliance for food packaging machinery components is governed by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU 10/2011 Annex I overall migration below 10 mg/dm², ASTM D4020, and ISO 11542-1. Terminal products include bottle conveyor guide rails, star wheels, wear strips, and chain guides for filling lines. Ram-pressure fluctuation below 70 MPa is directly associated with delamination after machining and premature wear at slideway contact points.

Porous filter and venting elements are produced from 100 wt% Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4122 virgin powder without binder or pore former; green compacts are pressed at 2–20 MPa and heated in a high-airflow oven at 175–205°C for 30–120 min. The particle-necking stage occurs at atmospheric pressure without applied compaction, so open porosity depends on initial compaction pressure and powder particle-size distribution. Powder particle-size distribution is measured by ISO 13320; lot-to-lot shifts outside the supplier-specified band reduce pore-size uniformity and bubble-point reproducibility. Pore size and permeability are verified by ASTM F316 bubble-point testing and ISO 15901-1 mercury porosimetry; chemical compliance is assessed against REACH 1907/2006 Annex XVII and, for potable-water contact elements, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. Terminal products include porous filter plates, venting discs, pneumatic muffler elements, and sparging frits. Compaction above 25 MPa reduces open porosity below 15 vol% and produces gas permeability values that fall outside filtration service limits; published data for this specific GUR 4122 porous configuration is limited.

Sintering Plateau Time Controls Abrasion Resistance in Compression-Moulded Sheet

For machined pump and conveyor components, sheet stock begins as Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4122 powder compacted in multi-daylight hydraulic presses at 3–10 MPa and sintered at 190–220°C. Feedstock is 100 wt% virgin powder; no internal release agent or plasticizer is used, and section thickness from 5 mm to 120 mm requires hold time of 10–15 min/10 mm before controlled cooling at ≤5 K/min. Compliance for industrial stock shapes is evaluated under ASTM D4020, ISO 11542-1, and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for incidental food-contact liners. Terminal products are machined bushings, liners, chain guides, silo liners, and pump wear components. Rapid cooling above 5 K/min in thick sections is documented to produce residual stresses and centreline shrinkage porosity that cause dimensional instability after machining.
