    Packing & Storage
Packing Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B is supplied as powder in 25 kg moisture-resistant paper bags, typically palletized.
Container Loading (20′ FCL) Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B packed in palletized bags, loaded into a 20-foot FCL dry container and secured for ocean freight.
Shipping Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B is an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder/granulate. It is non-hazardous and not regulated for transport. Ship in moisture-resistant, sealed packaging under clean, dry, ambient conditions; protect from contamination, moisture, and direct sunlight.
Storage Store Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B powder in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat, ignition sources, and strong oxidizers. Keep original containers tightly closed to prevent moisture and contamination. Avoid dust generation and accumulation; use grounding/bonding where appropriate. Do not smoke or use open flames nearby, and follow the SDS and local regulations.
Shelf Life Celanese GUR 4120 ECO-B typically has a two-year shelf life when stored unopened, dry, below 30°C, and protected from direct sunlight.
Application of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B

Wet-process lithium-ion battery separator lines running Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B compound the powder into high-boiling paraffin oil at 18–28 wt% polymer. Antioxidant loading is maintained between 0.1 wt% and 0.5 wt% to limit oxidative chain scission during twin-screw compounding. The gel is extruded through a T-die at 160–220°C and cast onto chill rolls. Sequential biaxial stretching is conducted at 90–120°C with machine-direction draw ratios of 5:1 to 7:1 and transverse-direction draw ratios of 6:1 to 9:1. Residual oil is extracted with methylene chloride or n-hexane at 25–40°C to below 0.5 wt%. Heat setting follows at 120–135°C. The resulting microporous membrane is 5–20 µm thick with porosity of 38–45% and Gurley air permeability of 150–350 s/100 mL. Tensile properties tested per ASTM D882 fall typically at 120–180 MPa in the machine direction and 100–150 MPa in the transverse direction. Shutdown temperature is observed near 135°C. Melt integrity is retained above 170°C. Because GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B has no measurable melt mass-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, incoming resin control uses the viscosity number determined per ISO 1628-3. The critical processing conflict is that higher molecular weight raises gel strength but narrows the draw window. Exceeding 9:1 transverse draw produces local fibrillation and pinholing. Published data for this specific ECO-B grade in separator films is limited. The ranges above reflect industrial wet-process UHMWPE separators produced from 4.5×106 g/mol class resins.

What Processing Conditions Govern Ram Extrusion of ECO-B Wear Strips?

In bottling and packaging conveyor lines, UHMWPE wear strips and chain guides are ram extruded from GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B where the converter requires bio-attributed material without altering existing tooling. Ram extrusion does not depend on melt flow. The powder is compacted at ambient temperature and forced through a heated die. Die temperature is held at 190–210°C, and cooling water enters the calibrator at 40–60°C. For rods of 40–80 mm diameter, production rates are typically 0.5–1.5 m/h to avoid unmelted core boundaries. The extruded profiles are machined into chain guides, star wheels, and wear strips. Food-contact compliance is maintained under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation 10/2011 when the bio-attributed grade is covered by the converter’s food-contact declaration. Sand-slurry abrasion resistance is benchmarked by ASTM G75. UHMWPE wear loss is typically less than 40 mg/km under a silica sand slurry, although published data for the ECO-B variant is limited. The main operational boundary is that heating above 240°C accelerates thermo-oxidative degradation. Barrel heaters are controlled within ±5°C and purged with nitrogen if production stops exceed 10 min.

Fiber producers drawing UHMWPE from semi-dilute solution select GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B when cut-resistant glove yarn and ballistic prepreg specifications require bio-attribution under ISCC PLUS mass balance. The powder is dissolved in decalin or white mineral oil at 6–12 wt%. The solution is extruded through multi-hole spinnerets at 150–170°C and quenched in water. Gel filaments are drawn at 120–140°C to total draw ratios between 30:1 and 60:1. Residual solvent is extracted with n-hexane or dichloromethane and dried to below 50 ppm. Published literature for gel-spun UHMWPE filaments of this molecular weight class reports tensile strength of 2.8–3.4 GPa and tensile modulus of 90–120 GPa. Cut-resistant glove liners knit from 100% UHMWPE yarns are tested under EN 388:2016. The final cut level depends on yarn count, liner weight, and coating. Ballistic composite producers consolidate unidirectional prepregs at 110–130°C and 10–20 MPa and test panels per NIJ 0101.06. The main incompatibility is that residual oil above 0.5 wt% in the filament suppresses post-drawing load transfer and lowers modulus. Extraction and drying are therefore controlled as continuous steps rather than as batch afterthoughts.

Sintered Porous Structures for Wastewater Aeration Diffusers

Sintered porous UHMWPE plates for wastewater aeration and laboratory filtration are produced from GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B by mixing 20–40 wt% sieved sodium chloride of 20–40 mesh into the powder. The mixture is compacted in a mold at 3–10 MPa and sintered at 170–200°C for 30–90 min. The salt is then leached in deionized water at 40–60°C until conductivity of the wash water is below 10 µS/cm. Final porosity is 35–45%. The mean pore diameter is controlled by the salt sieve fraction. Air permeability is measured by the Gurley method under ASTM D726 and is controlled primarily by the porogen sieve fraction rather than by sintering time alone. Wastewater aeration diffusers made from these plates operate continuously at air flow rates of 5–15 m³/h per disc. Mechanical integrity is tested per ASTM D638-14 with tensile strength of 20–30 MPa for sintered UHMWPE, which is lower than compression-molded sheet because of porosity. The process boundary is that residual moisture in the powder before sintering must be below 0.1 wt%; otherwise steam pockets create internal voids. The grade is not used in potable water contact unless separate NSF/ANSI 61 certification is obtained for the finished component.

When Bio-Attributed UHMWPE Sheets Replace Acetal in High-Humidity Cutting Zones

Meat processing and packaging lines replace acetal cutting boards and wear pads with compression-molded sheets of GUR UHMWPE 4120 ECO-B when sanitation protocols require low water uptake and no hydrolysis. The powder is compacted in hydraulic presses at 15–20 MPa and sintered at 195–205°C for 20–40 min. Cooling at 5–10 K/min reduces residual stresses. Sheets are machined into cutting boards, guide rails, and chain tensioners. Water absorption after 24 h per ISO 62 is below 0.01%. The material is compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for contact with food under repeated use. In high-humidity cutting zones, acetal components can hydrolyze slightly in acid sanitizers. UHMWPE is chemically inert across pH 2–12. The operational boundary is that welding is not possible; components must be fastened mechanically. The bio-attributed grade carries the same processing parameters as fossil-based GUR 4120, so press settings do not require requalification.
