Application of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4114

When a wet-process lithium-ion battery separator line is fed with 20–30 wt% GUR 4114 powder dispersed in a high-boiling paraffin oil, the compound also contains 0.1–0.5 wt% of a phenolic/phosphite antioxidant package to suppress oxidative chain scission during co-rotating twin-screw compounding at 180–220 °C; a screw length-to-diameter ratio of 40:1 or higher is used because the gel has no measurable melt-flow rate under 21.6 kg load at 190 °C, and batch-to-batch variation in the powder fraction below 100 µm requires gravimetric dosing accuracy of ±0.2 wt% to prevent cast-film pinholes. The gel is cast through a flat die onto a chill roll maintained at 20–40 °C, extracted with methylene chloride or n-hexane, biaxially stretched to a 5–20 µm microporous film, and heat-set at 120–140 °C. The compliance baseline is cell-level qualification under UL 1642 and IEC 62660-2, with incoming film tensile tested under ASTM D882-18 and thickness variation controlled to ISO 4593:1993; REACH EC 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU apply to the finished separator roll. Published data for the exact ionic conductivity of GUR 4114-based separator film is limited, so qualification requires electrochemical impedance spectroscopy against a reference separator rather than reliance on resin datasheet values. The finished article is a slit separator roll for lithium-ion cells used in electric vehicle and stationary storage packs.

What Limits the Gel-Spun Filament Draw Ratio Before Molecular Relaxation?

In gel-spinning, GUR 4114 is dissolved at 5–8 wt% in decalin or high-purity paraffin oil with 0.1–0.3 wt% thermal stabilizer, then filtered and pumped through a spinneret at 150–170 °C; the gel filament is quenched in water to below the crystallization onset, extracted, and drawn in multiple heated stages to a total draw ratio of 40–60×. Batch-to-batch gel strength variation requires closed-loop tension control on the first draw stand, because exceeding 60× draw without reducing residual decalin below the downstream textile specification promotes fibrillation and surface damage; solvent carryover is monitored by headspace gas chromatography. The resulting filament is qualified against EN 388:2016 for cut-resistant gloves and sleeves and ASTM D885-10 for filament tensile properties; offshore and industrial ropes may require additional product-level testing depending on the purchaser specification. Terminal products include high-tenacity yarns for ballistic panels, synthetic winch lines, offshore mooring ropes, and cut-resistant clothing components.

Ram-Extruded Stock Shapes and Skiving Allowances

Ram extrusion of 100 wt% virgin GUR 4114 powder produces rod, plate, and profile stock without plasticizer; the powder is compacted and sintered in a heated die at 200–260 °C, with ram pressure only high enough to densify the charge to approximately 0.93–0.94 g/cm³ before the continuous feed advances the sintered section. The material is specified under ASTM D4020-18 and ISO 11542-1:2001, with food-contact grades certified to FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 when downstream machining is performed under audited food-equipment conditions. The production route includes skiving of ram-extruded cylinders into continuous sheets of 1–5 mm thickness, followed by machining into conveyor wear strips, chain guides, star wheels, gear blanks, and bearing pads. A process limitation is thermal expansion: at a coefficient of linear thermal expansion near 1.5 × 10⁻⁴ K⁻¹, long guide rails require slotted mounting holes to avoid buckling when ambient temperature varies by more than 20 °C.

During sintered porous sheet manufacture, 60–80 wt% of GUR 4114 powder sieved to 100–300 µm is blended with 20–40 wt% of a sub-100 µm fine polyolefin fraction to narrow the bubble-point pore diameter; the blend is charged into a steel mold without external pressure and sintered in a nitrogen-purged oven at 200–220 °C for 30–60 min depending on sheet thickness, then cooled under nitrogen to reduce oxidation. Pore-size characteristics are evaluated by bubble-point testing under ASTM F316-03 rather than inferred from the powder sieve curve. Finished parts such as vacuum filter media, pneumatic suction cups, industrial aeration diffusers, and oil-water separator elements carry REACH EC 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU compliance; food-contact or potable-water ancillary components are evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011. The process boundary is a continuous air service ceiling of 80 °C and incompatibility with strong oxidizing acids such as concentrated nitric acid, which attacks the sintered polyethylene surface.

Compression-Moulded GUR 4114 Liner Plates Retain Impact Toughness at Cryogenic Temperatures

Compression moulding of 100 wt% GUR 4114 powder into liner plates is performed at 200–220 °C and 10–20 MPa mould pressure, followed by cooling under pressure to prevent void formation; sheet thicknesses of 8–30 mm are cut, welded with UHMWPE welding rod, and mechanically anchored to steel substrates using slotted holes to accommodate thermal movement. The material baseline is ASTM D4020-18, with food-contact applications requiring FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011; static-dissipative liner variants may be blended with 1–2 wt% conductive carbon black but must then be re-qualified for food-contact status. Terminal products include hopper liners, chute liners, silo discharge liners, and truck/railcar bed liners used in mining, cement, grain handling, and bulk chemical transfer. The operational boundary is continuous service above 80 °C, where creep and dimensional change increase sharply, and the use of sharp-edged fasteners without isolation washers, which can initiate stress cracking under cyclic load.

When Wet-End Paper Machine Components Must Survive Wire Contact Without Lubrication

For paper machine wet-end drainage elements, GUR 4114 is machined from compression-moulded or ram-extruded sheet of 100 wt% virgin polymer in thicknesses of 10–25 mm; the blank is CNC-machined with a 2–5 mm radius on the leading edge to prevent wire streak marks and mounted through dovetail slots in stainless steel or FRP structures. The material is qualified for mechanical properties under ASTM D4020-18 and ISO 11542-1:2001, with abrasion resistance measured by mass loss under ASTM G65-16 and friction against paper machine wire characterized by ASTM D1894-14; no food-contact standard applies unless the machine produces food-grade paper, in which case the component supplier must certify FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011. Terminal products are suction box covers, foil blades, forming boards, deflector strips, and dewatering elements. The operating ceiling is 80 °C in continuous contact, and the material must not be exposed to ketone-based cleaning solvents that can swell or stress-crack the machined edge.
