Celanese GUR UHMWPE 4113 is processed in wet-process lithium-ion battery separator manufacture as the high-molecular-mass polyolefin constituent of a gel precursor. In this downstream application the resin feed fraction is expressed relative to the plasticized gel. Published quantitative data specific to GUR 4113 on commercial separator extrusion lines are limited; however, the operating envelope common across wet-process UHMWPE separator production holds the resin fraction at 15–35 wt% with the balance consisting of a high-boiling paraffin oil or paraffin/mineral oil mixture that is subsequently removed by solvent extraction. A primary antioxidant package is retained below 0.1 wt% to suppress chain scission during gel extrusion and to minimize ash residue in the finished membrane. The manufacturing sequence uses a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1, barrel temperatures between 180 °C and 220 °C, and a flat sheet die feeding a chill roll that locks gel film thickness to 0.5–2.0 mm. The cast gel film is then biaxially stretched, with machine-direction and transverse-direction draw ratios each in the 4:1–7:1 range, before passing through n-hexane or methylene chloride extraction baths and a heat-setting zone at 110–130 °C that stabilizes pore geometry. Terminal product types include single-layer and multilayer polyolefin separators used in cylindrical and prismatic lithium-ion cells for traction batteries and stationary energy storage systems. Compliance obligations in this segment include IATF 16949:2016 for automotive battery supply chains, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542; separator-level performance is assessed by ASTM D882-18 for tensile properties, ASTM D3763-18 for puncture resistance, and ASTM F316-03 for bubble-point pore size. A critical process boundary is the upper melt temperature of 240 °C: exceeding this threshold during gel extrusion degrades molecular weight and raises the risk of black specks and pinhole defects after stretching, while insufficient thermal input produces undissolved gel particles that can tear the gel film during transverse drawing.
In gel-spun high-tenacity polyethylene fibre production, GUR 4113 is dissolved into a high-boiling aliphatic solvent to form a dope with a polymer concentration between 5 wt% and 10 wt%. The dope is prepared in a jacketed vessel at 150–180 °C, then fed through a twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 25:1–40:1 to a metering spin pump and a multi-hole spinneret. Spinneret pack pressures in commercial lines commonly range from 15 MPa to 35 MPa, and the pack requires sintered metal filters with absolute ratings of 20 µm or finer to remove gel specks before filament formation. The extruded filaments enter a water coagulation bath at 5–20 °C, where solvent exchange creates a gel fibre that is subsequently extracted with a volatile solvent and hot-drawn across multiple ovens. Total draw ratios are typically above 60:1, with individual oven temperatures between 120 °C and 150 °C; final relaxation is kept below 1% to stabilize tension and diameter. Terminal products include cut-resistant gloves, soft ballistic armour panels, fishing lines, marine ropes, and industrial slings. Sector compliance incorporates ASTM D7269/D7269M-21 for high-tenacity yarn tensile testing, EN 388:2016+A1:2018 and ANSI/ISEA 105-2016 for cut resistance classification, NIJ Standard 0101.06 for ballistic packaging, and ISO 10325:2018 for synthetic fibre rope specifications. The main process limitation is non-uniform solvent removal: residual solvent above 0.3 wt% after extraction causes fibre fusion during hot drawing, while excessively aggressive extraction deteriorates the gel network and reduces final tenacity. Batch-to-batch variation in dope viscosity also requires adjusting spin pump speed rather than barrel temperature because the latter narrows the already limited processing window between dissolution and thermal degradation.
Under lot-level traceability to ISO 5834-2:2019 and ASTM F648-21, compression-moulded stock shapes produced from GUR 4113 are converted into implantable orthopaedic bearing components. The resin feed is used at 100 wt% in virgin form for direct compression moulding; oxidation-stabilised variants incorporate dl-alpha-tocopherol at 0.1–0.3 wt% by pre-compounding or diffusion loading, while calcium stearate and other external lubricants are excluded because they can interfere with consolidation and wear performance. The consolidation process runs in heated platen presses at 180–220 °C under pressures of 3–10 MPa, followed by slow cooling at rates below 0.5 °C/min under load to minimise internal voids and density gradients. After moulding, CNC machining produces net-shape components from the consolidated stock; subsequent crosslinking is performed by gamma irradiation at doses between 50 kGy and 100 kGy in an inert atmosphere to reduce wear and to avoid oxidised surface layers. Finished device types include acetabular liners for total hip arthroplasty and tibial inserts for total knee arthroplasty. Regulatory and biocompatibility requirements include ISO 10993-1:2018, USP <88> Class VI testing, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for the base olefin polymer, and EU MDR 2017/745 for finished device conformity. A defining operational boundary is oxygen exposure during consolidation and irradiation: packaging must use vacuum or inert-gas barrier foil, and post-irradiation annealing or remelting must be applied to eliminate residual free radicals in non-vitamin E formulations; otherwise the bearing stock can develop subsurface oxidative embrittlement and delamination during long-term implantation.
For porous sintered media in water treatment and gas dispersion, GUR 4113 powder is charged into closed moulds at 100 wt% resin with no binding agent; the pore network is generated by partial melting and fusion at particle contact points rather than by foaming or solvent casting. Sintering temperatures are held between 180 °C and 200 °C, with dwell times from 20 min to 60 min depending on part cross-section, and cooling is performed under pressure to minimise shrinkage variation. Pore size is controlled through the powder particle size distribution and sintering temperature, not through a leachable template. Finished porous sheets, tubes, and discs are machined into fine-bubble aeration diffusers, wastewater treatment gas spargers, pneumatic exhaust silencers, and filtration plates. Compliance for aqueous and potable contact includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, NSF/ANSI 61 for drinking water system components, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Pore integrity is measured by bubble-point test method ASTM F316-03, while total porosity is verified by mercury intrusion porosimetry according to ISO 15901-1:2016. The service boundary for these porous parts is a continuous temperature limit below 80 °C, and the material is not recommended for strong oxidising acid environments at elevated temperature because oxidative chain scission progressively reduces particle-to-particle fusion strength and leads to particulate shedding.
Paper machine dewatering elements machined from GUR 4113 operate under continuous wet-end sliding contact. The resin is consolidated into sheet or rod by ram extrusion at die temperatures between 200 °C and 230 °C, then annealed to relax residual stress before CNC machining into suction box covers, forming board foils, wear strips, and chain guides. The formulation addition in this segment is 100 wt% virgin GUR 4113 for food-contact and corrosion-sensitive positions; static-dissipative variants may include conductive carbon black at 1–5 wt%, but these are not assigned to direct food-contact surfaces. Compliance standards include ISO 11542-2:2019 for UHMWPE sheets, ASTM D4020-18 for ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene mouldings, ASTM D638-14 for tensile property verification, and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 where the machine contacts food packaging material. The production process includes post-machining dimensional stabilisation because the linear thermal expansion coefficient of UHMWPE is on the order of 1.5 × 10⁻⁴ K⁻¹, and service temperature under continuous load is limited to 80 °C to prevent creep, loss of flatness, and fastener pull-through. Terminal finished product types include paper machine suction box covers, dewatering foils, guide rails for container handling, scraper blades, and wear shoes in food and beverage packaging conveyors.
