In lithium-ion separator converting, Celanese GUR UHMWPE 402M13 powder is compounded with high-purity paraffin oil at a polymer mass fraction between 10 wt% and 20 wt% in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 36:1 L/D and closed-loop gear pump metering. The barrel is zoned so that the first two sections operate below 140 °C to avoid a premature gel point, while the mixing and discharge sections are held at 200 °C to 230 °C under 0.3–0.6 MPa head pressure. The gel film is cast onto a polished chill roll at 30–50 °C, extracted with n-hexane or methylene chloride in a counter-current extractor, and then biaxially stretched at a machine-direction to transverse-direction ratio between 4:1 and 7:1. The resulting membrane typically shows a thickness of 16–25 µm, porosity between 38% and 48% by gravimetric density ratio using ISO 1183-1:2019, and Gurley airflow resistance between 180 s and 350 s per 100 cm³ when tested according to ISO 5636-5. Lines that run the powder as the sole polymer matrix may observe gel fracture if the melt temperature exceeds 235 °C; adding 20–40 wt% high-density polyethylene shifts the gel point and reduces head pressure but also lowers the upper-temperature end-use to approximately 105 °C. The grade’s controlled particle size distribution influences plasticizer uptake kinetics; when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, the powder must be dried at 80–90 °C for 3–4 h because surface moisture distorts the gel and produces pinholes during extraction.
The limiting variable is not powder molecular weight but interparticle contact uniformity during hydraulic preforming. In pharmaceutical and analytical filter plate production, the powder is gravimetrically dosed into a hardened P20 or H13 tool steel die and compacted at 2–12 MPa at ambient temperature before free sintering in a circulating-air oven at 215–245 °C for 25–45 min. At compaction pressures below 3 MPa, the sintered plaques can retain coarse interparticle voids with mean flow pore diameters above 30 µm, while pressures above 8 MPa produce capillary throats below 15 µm; capillary flow porometry values should be read against ASTM F316-03. The sintering cycle must avoid any cooling ramp faster than 1.5 °C/min because the low thermal diffusivity of UHMWPE generates through-thickness shrinkage gradients that crack at high-porosity edges. The 402M13 designation is used in clean-room porous component specifications where the sintered plate is machined into vent discs 3–10 mm thick and then validated under ISO 10993-5:2009 for cytotoxicity and ISO 10993-10:2021 for sensitization on the final device configuration. Heat-sealing of these plates remains problematic because UHMWPE does not form a true melt-seal at conventional pouch film temperatures, so mechanical interference fit or crimped stainless steel retainers are used in filter assemblies.
Ram extrusion of GUR 402M13 omits the melt state exploited by POM or PA and instead relies on a reciprocating hydraulic ram that delivers powder into a heated die land where the compacted polymer particles sinter together. The barrel bore is commonly 30–80 mm, the die land length is held between 20:1 and 40:1 of the profile cross-section, and the die temperatures are zoned from 180 °C at the feed transition to 220–250 °C at the metering land. Ram pressure is regulated between 8 MPa and 20 MPa, with ram speed 5–40 mm/min; pushing beyond 20 MPa at low ram speed overheats the charge and can produce yellowing due to oxidation before the exit. The extruded guide rail is quenched in water at 40–60 °C and stress-relieved at 120 °C for 4 h in air or mineral oil to reduce dimensional recovery. Finished profiles typically exhibit density 0.935–0.945 g/cm³ by ISO 1183-1:2019, tensile yield strength above 20 MPa by ISO 527-2:2012, and notched Charpy impact above 140 kJ/m² at 23 °C. The low surface energy allows washdown conveyor contact plates to shed sticky residue, but continuous service should be limited to 80 °C under high line load; above that threshold creep accelerates and tongue-and-groove joints begin to open within 1 h of start-up if unsupported.

| Pre-drying | 80–90 °C for 3–4 h when RH exceeds 60% | 80–90 °C for 3–4 h when RH exceeds 60% |

Compression molding of pharmaceutical vent disks from GUR 402M13 requires a tooling design that accounts for the lack of a true melt phase. The powder is charged into a cavity, compressed at 10–25 N/mm², and heated at 4 °C/min to a plateau of 210–230 °C; the pressure is then maintained while the mold is cooled to below 60 °C before ejection. If the mold opens above the recrystallization onset, the part warps and the sintered skin can delaminate from the core. Porous disks intended to vent syringes or diagnostic cassettes are sintered to 25–40% porosity with bubble point thresholds tied to ASTM F316-03; the final device must satisfy physicochemical extractables screening under USP <661.1> and, where the application touches bodily fluids, the biological evaluation matrix of ISO 10993-1:2018. Exposure to gamma irradiation at 25–40 kGy in air should be treated as a process risk because oxidative chain scission reduces oxidative induction time by more than 50% when measured by ASTM D3895-19; terminal sterilization can be performed under vacuum or inert atmosphere to reduce the free-radical concentration. Autoclaving is not recommended for unsupported thin disks because creep at 121 °C under 0.1 MPa saturated steam causes permanent dimensional set within 20 min.
Gel spinning of GUR 402M13 from decalin or n-paraffin solutions uses a polymer concentration between 5 wt% and 12 wt%, dissolution under nitrogen at 135–145 °C, and filament extrusion through a spinneret with 0.8–2.0 mm capillary diameter into an air gap of 5–20 mm. The as-spun gel fiber is drawn in-line at an initial draw ratio of 5–10, then in a two-stage hot draw at 120–150 °C to total draw ratios between 30:1 and 60:1. Fibers produced under these conditions from UHMWPE grades in this molar mass family typically reach tenacity 2.5–3.5 GPa and tensile modulus 80–120 GPa when tested by ASTM D885-10. Residual solvent is the controlling quality parameter for ballistic and composite use; concentrations above 50 mg/kg can reduce creep rupture life in tension-loaded ropes and laminates. The dissolution step is the process bottleneck because the polymer requires extensive shear time to achieve optical homogeneity, and local overheating above 150 °C in stagnant zones can deplete the antioxidant and trigger gel specks in the final filament. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; however, the draw limits observed on production-scale lines align with the general gel-spinning behavior of high-viscosity UHMWPE powders rather than lower molar mass HDPE.
For bulk solids handling wear liners, GUR 402M13 is consolidated into sheets with thickness 5–40 mm in a multi-daylight hydraulic press. The heating cycle must allow the entire charge to reach 200–230 °C before final compaction; premature full-pressure application at 20 N/mm² traps particle boundaries because the powder does not fully wet the mold surfaces. A staged pressure profile—5 N/mm² during heating, 15–25 N/mm² at peak temperature, and pressure maintained through cooling to 60 °C—reduces melt-like consolidation defects in the core. If the hydraulic pressure decays by more than 10% during cooling, the sheet can develop a low-density core with measurable differential scanning calorimetry crystallinity splits between surface and center; such sheets fail flatness after machining. The finished liner is commonly tested under two-body abrasive wear using ASTM G77-17 for relative volume loss and under ASTM D638-14 for tensile yield strength above 20 MPa. The upper service boundary in dry bulk handling is not governed by melting but by thermal expansion; at 80 °C a 2 m long UHMWPE liner can grow by more than 8 mm compared with its room-temperature length if the mechanical restraint does not permit sliding.
