When ISO 5834-1 Powder Is Consolidated into Orthopaedic Bearing Stock

Consolidated bearing stock made from GUR 1050 is produced for orthopaedic manufacturers that machine total joint replacement components. The powder is specified against ISO 5834-1:2019 for particulate requirements, traceability lot control, and allowable residuals; the consolidated stock is specified against ISO 5834-2:2019 and ASTM F648-21 for moulded forms. Biocompatibility evaluation follows ISO 10993-1:2018, with material-specific chemical and morphological characterisation conducted by the implant fabricator. The formulation is 100 % virgin GUR 1050 resin. No melt-processable carrier resin, plasticiser, or filler is added because the viscosity number of the grade exceeds 3000 mL/g, and any diluent would appear as a separate phase in the consolidated microstructure. If an antioxidant-bearing acetabular insert is required, alpha-tocopherol is added at 0.05–0.1 wt% in separate medical-grade blends; virgin GUR 1050 stock for irradiation-crosslinked or unirradiated bearings remains unfilled. Downstream conversion is performed in a vacuum-capable hydraulic compression press with heated platens. Powder is charged into the mould at 20–25 °C, pre-compacted at 2–3 MPa to expel air, heated to 190–220 °C, and then consolidated at 5–10 MPa. Dwell time at consolidation temperature is monitored from core thermocouples rather than machine timers alone; moulded blocks are cooled under pressure at not more than 0.5 °C/min until the core reaches 60 °C to reduce residual stress. Screw extrusion and injection moulding are not viable for this molecular weight; attempts to melt-pump GUR 1050 through a single-screw extruder produce incomplete fusion and high shear heat, leading to oxidative degradation. Machined end products include acetabular cups, tibial inserts, patellar components, and glenoid bearing surfaces.

Pre-sizing of GUR 1050 powder for ram-extruded bottle-line guide rails is carried out by vibratory screening with an upper cut of 1000 µm before the material enters the hopper of a hydraulic ram extruder. The feedstock is charged as 100 % dry powder; no pelletising, plastication aid, antioxidant masterbatch, or melt lubricant is incorporated. For food-contact conformance, finished profiles are evaluated under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 against an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² and under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers. The ram extruder operates with a reciprocating hydraulic ram that compresses the powder into a heated barrel divided into 3 temperature zones: feed zone 180–200 °C, compression zone 220–240 °C, and metering zone 240–250 °C; the die is held at 160–180 °C. Ram pressure of 15–30 MPa forces the fused profile forward at each stroke, and a water bath at 15–25 °C solidifies the exiting section before cut-to-length sawing. Continuous production is limited by the residence time required to achieve full inter-particle fusion; excessive barrel temperature above 260 °C introduces oxidative yellowing and a distinct acrid odour, while incomplete fusion below 200 °C produces longitudinal cold seams that separate under conveyor chain loading. End products machined from these profiles include bottle-line guide rails, curved chain wear strips, beverage container star wheels, and can-transfer comb plates for high-volume packaging lines.

What Determines the Cooling-Rate Limit in Thick-Section Hopper Liners?

The limiting variable in thick-section hopper liner production is thermal conductivity, not press capacity. GUR 1050 is supplied as a 0.93 g/cm³ density powder that is compression-moulded in hydraulic presses with platen parallelism held to ±0.05 mm/m. The material specification is covered by ASTM D4020-18 and ISO 11542-1:2001, while food-contact liners are additionally evaluated under EU (EU) No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. The formulation is 100 % virgin GUR 1050 powder. No plasticiser, antioxidant, or antistatic filler is included for standard liners; where static dissipation is specified, conductive UHMWPE compounds are sourced as pre-filled grades because GUR 1050 is not supplied as a conductive compound. For sheet thicknesses from 20–80 mm, the mould is pre-compacted at 2–3 MPa at room temperature, heated to 200–210 °C, and then consolidated at 7–10 MPa. Hold time at consolidation temperature is 10–15 min per 10 mm of part thickness, with core-thermocouple verification. Cooling is executed under pressure at 0.5 °C/min until the core reaches 60 °C; faster cooling creates thermal gradients that produce bowing and residual stress after finish machining. Because UHMWPE thermal conductivity is approximately 0.41 W/(m·K), production cycles scale non-linearly above 60 mm, and press utilisation falls even though melt-conditioning time remains unchanged. End products include hopper liners, silo liners, chute liners, railcar hopper discharge liners, and conveyor impact beds.

In aqueous aeration diffuser production, GUR 1050 powder is dry-sintered in shallow moulds at 170–190 °C to form porous sheets with interconnected channels. The formulation is 100 % GUR 1050 powder; no melt binder or solvent is added. Porosity is controlled by sieve fraction selection, typically 100–250 µm and 250–500 µm powder cuts. Food-contact grades are evaluated under EU (EU) No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520; potable-water contact components are evaluated under NSF/ANSI 61. The mould is filled without external pressure and passed through a continuous hot-air sintering oven at 170–190 °C for 15–25 min, followed by forced-air cooling to 60 °C. Pore size in the finished sheet is adjusted from 10–80 µm by the ratio of coarse to fine powder; total porosity is held between 30 % and 45 %. Over-sintering above 200 °C collapses pore structure and creates dense translucent regions, while under-sintering below 165 °C leaves insufficient inter-particle neck strength for vacuum-table service. Published data for continuous sintering of GUR 1050 in this exact configuration is limited; processing parameters are therefore established from powder particle size distribution and absence of melt flow rather than conventional melt-rheology data. Terminal parts include porous suction plates, vacuum conveyor beds, air slides, wastewater aeration diffuser discs, and filter support plates.

Centrifugal Slurry Pump Throat Bushing Grade Criteria

Material selection for slurry pump throat bushings is driven by dry-run impact and slurry erosion resistance rather than elongation at break alone. GUR 1050 is converted as 100 % compression-moulded sheet or ram-extruded hollow bar and then machined to final dimensions. Material conformance is checked against ASTM D4020-18 and ISO 11542-1:2001; dimensional fits are controlled under ISO 286-1:2010. For a shaft diameter near 100 mm, diametral running clearance in a throat bushing is set at 0.15–0.25 mm to accommodate thermal expansion and slurry particle wedging. Machining uses polycrystalline diamond or cemented carbide tooling at surface speeds below 300 m/min, with finishing passes at 0.1–0.3 mm depth and water-cooling to prevent thermal expansion. GUR 1050 components show a practical service boundary at continuous operating temperatures below 80 °C; dry-running above 100 °C leads to expansion, scoring, and seizure against metal shafts. The grade is not recommended for oil-lubricated precision bearings because it contains no self-lubricating filler; it is instead deployed as a wet or slurry-lubricated wear component. Terminal parts include slurry pump throat bushings, impeller wear rings, gland follower rings, and shaft sleeves.
