Application of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 1020-E

In the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) wet process for lithium-ion battery separator films, GUR 1020-E is introduced as the ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fraction into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1 or higher and a barrel profile from 140°C to 240°C. The grade is dry-blended with high-density polyethylene at 5–20 wt% of total polymer content, and the combined polymer is dispersed in high-viscosity paraffin oil at total polymer loadings of 10–30 wt%. The oil is metered through side-stuffer ports downstream of the melting zone to avoid phase inversion in the partially filled screw channel. The resulting gel sheet is cast onto a chilled roll held at 15–30°C, extracted with n-hexane or methylene chloride to a residual solvent level below 50 ppm, and then biaxially oriented at 90–130°C. On commercial lines, the high zero-shear viscosity of GUR 1020-E suppresses pore collapse during solvent extraction, maintaining pore channel diameters in the 20–80 nm range and Gurley permeability values between 200 s and 400 s per 100 cm³ measured per JIS P8117. Puncture resistance is evaluated per ASTM D3763, and tensile elongation is evaluated per ASTM D882. The entanglement density contributed by the UHMWPE fraction increases melt strength, but at polymer loadings above 30 wt% the gel becomes too elastic to cast uniformly at line speeds above 5 m/min. Residual plasticizer above 100 ppm depresses shutdown temperature and creates quality variation during cell assembly, so extraction and drying are controlled more tightly than in conventional HDPE separator production. The final separator is slit to widths of 8 mm to 150 mm for cylindrical and prismatic cell winding, with web thickness uniformity of ±0.5 µm required across the full reel length.

What Draw Ratio Dictates Tenacity Retention in Gel-Spun GUR 1020-E Filament?

The gel-spinning route for high-strength UHMWPE yarn uses a suspension of GUR 1020-E in decalin or mineral oil at 3–8 wt%, dissolved in a jacketed vessel at 150–180°C under nitrogen blanketing. The solution is fed by a gear pump at 160°C through a spinneret with 100–400 holes, quenched in a water bath at 10–25°C to form a gel fibre, and then conveyed through an extraction zone where the solvent is replaced by n-heptane or trichloroethylene. First-stage drawing is conducted in a hot air oven at 130–140°C, followed by second-stage drawing at 145–150°C. Tenacity measured per ASTM D2256 rises steeply as total draw ratio increases from 15:1 to 30:1; above 30:1, the frequency of filament breaks in the second-stage oven increases unless the oven length is extended beyond 2.0 m and residence time is held below 10 s. On a production-scale line with 40 kg/h throughput, the practical draw ratio ceiling is usually set at 25:1 to 28:1 because residual gel defects from incomplete dissolution are amplified at higher orientation. The final multifilament yarn with a linear density of 440 dtex to 880 dtex is directed into cut-resistant gloves, braided ropes, and composite reinforcement. A specific incompatibility appears when unsaturated coupling agents are used in post-treatment; these additives yellow at draw oven temperatures above 140°C and reduce tensile strength retention below 80% after 1000 h of UV exposure per ASTM G154.

When ram extrusion is selected instead of screw extrusion, GUR 1020-E powder is first dried at 80°C for 3–4 h to reduce moisture below 0.05 wt%; higher moisture content generates steam pockets in the die and leaves pitting along the rod surface. The powder is pre-compacted in the feed hopper at 0.3–0.5 MPa and advanced by a hydraulic ram into a heated barrel with zones of 150°C, 170°C, and 190°C. Die backpressure is maintained between 25 MPa and 45 MPa, depending on rod diameter from 20 mm to 200 mm. Within this pressure window, the powder particles consolidate by diffusion bonding without forming a true melt pool, preserving the entanglement density responsible for the grade’s wear resistance. A critical failure mode appears when the die land length-to-diameter ratio falls below 10:1, producing a central core that is less fused than the outer shell; this condition is detected by a hardness gradient greater than 5 Shore D points across the cross-section. After sizing, the rod is quenched in a water bath at 20–40°C and cut into bars for chain guides, wear strips, conveyor idlers, and pump volute liners. Machined parts are measured for tensile yield stress per ISO 527-2, notched Izod impact strength per ASTM D256, and molecular weight retention per ASTM D4020. If the die exit temperature exceeds 200°C, oxidation reduces elongation at break below 100% and creates microcracks at machined edges. For parts in direct food contact, end users must verify that the finished article meets FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011 migration limits; the supplier certificate for GUR 1020-E should state the applicable food-contact status for the specific lot used.

When Compression-Molded Liners Require OIT Compliance above 20 min

At heating rates below 6°C/min, GUR 1020-E powder compacts uniformly in matched metal molds without the localized shear heating that causes chain scission in injection molding. The mold is charged to within 5–8% of final volume to allow for thermal expansion and gas release; a cold pre-compaction step at 2 MPa closes the powder bed before the platens begin heating to 200–220°C. Full consolidation pressure of 5–10 MPa is applied only after the core reaches 180°C, preventing premature densification that traps volatiles at the centre of thick sections. Oxidation induction time determined by ASTM D3895 should remain above 20 min at 200°C for chemical-tank linings; if the powder is held at 220°C for more than 60 min, OIT falls below 10 min and the liner becomes brittle at weld seams. Pressurized holding time is scaled at 10–15 min per 10 mm of part thickness. The demolded liner is cooled in the press at 1–3°C/min to reduce warpage in fabricated tanks. Finished parts are used for phosphoric acid storage, plating tank liners, and ground storage hoppers where low moisture absorption and high abrasion resistance are required. Dimensional stability is verified by ASTM D648 heat deflection temperature and tensile properties by ASTM D638; long-term creep resistance is evaluated under ISO 899-1. For outdoor installations, carbon black-free GUR 1020-E formulations require UV stabilization; unstabilized liners exposed to direct sunlight can lose more than 30% of notched Izod impact strength within 12 months, so buried or indoor installation is preferred.

    Sinter-Press Porous Filter Microstructure Control

Control of interstitial pore diameter in pressureless sintered GUR 1020-E compacts begins with the powder fraction rather than the sintering temperature alone. The powder is screened to a narrow particle size band and filled into a ring mold; low-amplitude vibration increases packing density without segregating coarse particles. Sintering is carried out at 170–190°C for 15–30 min. At 170°C, contact necks between particles form slowly, yielding pore channels in the 10–40 µm range and porosity of 35–45%; at 190°C, the porosity falls below 30% and the bubble point pressure rises, but the plate becomes harder to backflush. Mercury intrusion porosimetry per ASTM D4284 is used to verify the pore throat distribution. The plates are used as air spargers in municipal water treatment, vacuum filter support grids, and porous distribution blocks in chemical scrubbers. Continuous service under mechanical load is limited to 60°C because the heat deflection temperature of unfilled UHMWPE is below 70°C at 0.45 MPa per ISO 75-1. Above 80°C in wet environments, the material creeps and the pore structure collapses under prolonged compressive stress.

For fine-denier monofilament netting used in aquaculture cages and mist eliminator pads, GUR 1020-E is extruded through a single-screw machine with a grooved feed section and a barrier screw at a melt temperature of 190–210°C. The melt is filtered through a screen pack of 100/60/100 mesh to remove gel particles, and the filament is quenched in a water bath at 30–50°C before entering a three-stage drawing line at 90°C, 110°C, and 120°C. A total draw ratio of 6:1 to 10:1 produces monofilament diameters of 0.15–0.30 mm with tensile strength above 800 MPa measured per ASTM D2256. The high molecular weight of GUR 1020-E increases die swell compared with conventional HDPE, so the die exit must be oversized by 2–3% to maintain target diameter. The oriented monofilament is then knitted or woven into nets and heat-set at 100°C for 5–10 min under tension. In marine service, the material resists hydrolysis and is not attacked by seawater; however, prolonged UV exposure requires a hindered amine light stabilizer package because unstabilized UHMWPE loses knot strength faster than standard HDPE. Published direct comparative data for GUR 1020-E in aquaculture netting is limited; processor validation under ISO 1805 for mesh breaking force is recommended before large-scale conversion.
