    Packing & Storage
Packing Celanese GUR UHMWPE 1020 is packaged in 25 kg moisture-resistant paper bags, palletized for industrial storage and handling.
Container Loading (20′ FCL) Celanese GUR UHMWPE 1020 is loaded into a 20-foot FCL container, palletized and secured for safe ocean transport.
Shipping Celanese GUR UHMWPE 1020 is shipped as a non-hazardous ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene powder in sealed, moisture-resistant bags or drums at ambient temperature. Protect from moisture, ignition sources, and oxidizing materials. It is not regulated as dangerous goods under DOT, IMDG, or IATA; no UN number required.
Storage Store Celanese GUR UHMWPE 1020 in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, ignition sources, direct sunlight, and moisture. Keep containers tightly closed in original packaging. Minimize dust generation and control static electricity. Avoid contact with strong oxidizers, and maintain good housekeeping to prevent powder accumulation. Do not store near food or beverages.
Shelf Life Typical shelf life is two years when stored sealed in original packaging under cool, dry conditions away from direct sunlight.
Application of Celanese GUR UHMWPE 1020

Lithium-ion separator film extrusion based on GUR 1020 uses a thermally induced phase separation mechanism. The resin is blended with high-purity liquid paraffin in a weight ratio of 1:4 to 1:6 polymer to plasticizer. Lot release is based on viscosity number under ISO 1628-3 rather than melt flow rate because the material does not flow under standard melt index conditions. A twin-screw extruder with L/D 48–52 is configured for low-shear gel thermoregulation at barrel set points between 180 °C and 230 °C. The melt phase is cast through a slot die onto a chilled roller maintained at 20–40 °C to produce a gel sheet of 800–1500 µm thickness. The sheet is drawn longitudinally and transversely after extraction of the oil with methylene chloride or n-hexane. Extraction and drying are operated in closed systems to keep residual solvent at trace levels. Final separator thickness is targeted at 7–16 µm, with porosity typically between 38% and 48%. Tensile properties are evaluated under ASTM D882. Air permeability is recorded on a Gurley densometer; separator specifications commonly require a Gurley value between 100 s/100 mL and 400 s/100 mL for high-energy cells. The resin must meet EU 2023/1542 substance restrictions and REACH Annex XVII. Conversion facilities audit traceability under IATF 16949 because separator film is an active cell component. Slit separator rolls for pouch and prismatic cells are the terminal product.

What Controls Gel-Spun Filament Tenacity When GUR 1020 Is Drawn in Multiple Stages?

Gel spinning of GUR 1020 into high-tenacity polyethylene yarn begins with dispersion of powder in decalin or a mineral-oil solvent at 130–150 °C. Spin dope concentration is maintained between 5 wt% and 10 wt%. Higher concentrations raise extensional viscosity and increase the risk of jet stretch failure. The dope is metered through a spinneret with 90–240 capillaries, passed across an air gap of 5–15 mm, and coagulated in a water bath at 15–25 °C. Solvent extraction is followed by a multi-stage hot drawing sequence. Total draw ratios from 20:1 to 50:1 align with filament tenacity values up to 35 cN/dtex when measured under ASTM D2256. Cut resistance of knitted gloves is characterized under EN 388 and ISO 13997. Ballistic spall liners require compliance with NIJ 0101.06. Terminal products include unidirectional laminates for ballistic panels, cut-resistant sleeves, and synthetic mooring ropes.

Compression Molding, Gamma Crosslinking, and Oxidation Index Control for Implantable UHMWPE

Direct compression molding of GUR 1020 for implantable orthopedic shapes is performed in vacuum or inert-gas heated presses. Molding temperatures are held between 190 °C and 225 °C; consolidation pressure typically ranges from 10 MPa to 30 MPa and may be ramped to minimize residual porosity. After molding, slow cooling under pressure prevents internal voids and dimensional springback. When highly crosslinked bearings are specified, consolidation is followed by gamma irradiation at 50–100 kGy or electron beam exposure. Post-irradiation remelting at 150 °C or annealing reduces free radical concentration. The converted component is tested under ASTM F648-23 and ISO 5834-2:2019. Oxidation index is tracked by ASTM F2102; a common acceptance limit for oxidation index is below 1.0 after accelerated aging. GUR 1020 powder must be vacuum packaged and protected from storage above 30 °C because oxidation begins at low radical concentrations. Terminal implant components include acetabular liners, tibial inserts, and patellar components.

When sintered porous parts are required for aqueous aeration and filtration, GUR 1020 powder is classified by particle-size fraction before filling. Particle-size segregation controls the final interparticle void size. Molds are filled with powder fractions in the 80–250 µm range and compacted at 3–10 MPa. Sintering is carried out at 180–220 °C for 20–60 min under low positive pressure. Premature extraction of the mold before cooling below 60 °C leads to pore collapse. Pore-size distribution is measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry per ISO 15901-1. For food-contact sintered sheets, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 applies and EU migration is controlled under EU 1935/2004. Sintered aeration diffusers for municipal wastewater basins and filter plates for chemical slurry dewatering are the primary terminal products.

When GUR 1020 Powder Functions as a Wear Additive in Engineering Thermoplastics

Dry blending of GUR 1020 with polyamide, polyoxymethylene, or polybutylene terephthalate is performed before twin-screw compounding. Addition levels from 5 wt% to 20 wt% are used in industrial wear compounds. Above 20 wt% tensile strength decreases because the ultrahigh-molecular-weight domains lack interfacial adhesion to the matrix. Barrel temperatures are set to the matrix melting range, typically 240–280 °C for polyamide 66, while the polyethylene phase remains as discrete micro-domains. Wear rate is measured under ASTM D3702; coefficient of friction is reported per ASTM D1894. The additive reduces stick-slip in sliding contact against stainless steel and hardened steel counterfaces. Terminal products include conveyor guide rails, bearing collars, and packaging machinery components.

Directly ram-extruded GUR 1020 profiles are produced without a conventional screw because the resin does not flow under melt index conditions. Powder is fed into a heated die barrel. A reciprocating plunger compacts the powder to fill a die segment maintained at 190–225 °C. The compacted plug moves through the die and fuses under controlled back pressure. Typical stock shapes include rods up to 250 mm diameter and sheets up to 100 mm thickness. Material properties are specified under ASTM D4020-18. This production route avoids the severe shear heating that causes molecular weight loss in screw extruders. Terminal parts include wear strips for bulk solids handling, chain guides, and slat-line components.
