On continuous wet-process separator lines producing 16–32 µm base film for lithium cells, GHR UHMWPE 8020 ECO-B is converted through a hot paraffin-oil dispersion route. Powder lot acceptance is checked against ASTM D4020-18 and ISO 21304-1:2007 before the lot is released to the mixing station. The powder is metered into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 52–64. A gear pump upstream of the flat die reduces pulse-induced thickness variation. Pre-drying to ≤0.10 wt% moisture is imposed when storage relative humidity exceeds 60%. The paraffin oil fraction is 70–85 wt% in the gel precursor, with the UHMWPE fraction correspondingly at 15–30 wt%. The antioxidant package is held at 0.1–1.0 phr; higher loadings can bloom to the film surface and reduce electrolyte wetting. Screen packs of 400 mesh or finer retain undissolved high-molecular-weight domains that would otherwise form gel specks. Extrudate is cast onto chill rolls at 30–70 °C to set the gel film. Extraction with a narrow-cut hydrocarbon or methylene chloride removes oil before biaxial stretching at 90–120 °C. Porosity 35–55%, Gurley 150–350 s/100 cm³, and puncture strength above 3.5 N/µm are targeted in cell qualification. This application demands the highest degree of gel uniformity. The main processing conflict is the inability to correct local gel defects after extraction. Off-spec film is typically scrapped. Published data for this specific configuration is limited to separator converter process reports and patent literature. The battery cell assembler must verify shutdown temperature, electrochemical oxidative stability, and shrinkage against IEC 62660-2 or equivalent end-use protocols. The grade is not a drop-in for dry-process separators. Dry stretching relies on row-nucleated lamellae in extruded film, not gel-cast structures.

Porosity is determined by dividing pore volume by geometric volume after measuring film density with ASTM D792 and using a skeletal density for UHMWPE of 0.930–0.945 g/cm³. Puncture strength is measured on a universal tester at 2 mm/min using a 1.0 mm spherical probe. The film is clamped in a 10 mm circular opening. Thermal shrinkage uses a convection oven with non-contact optical measurement. Comparative reference films are run in the same fixture to exclude start-up drift.
Cell makers impose separator shutdown tests at defined temperatures. The base film is exposed to elevated temperature in a constrained fixture. Shrinkage is measured after 1 h at 90 °C and after 10 min at 130 °C. The permissible machine-direction shrinkage is often <5% at 90 °C. Electrochemical stability is screened in coin cells using LiPF₆ in carbonate electrolyte. UHMWPE does not provide intrinsic shutdown function. Shutdown must be introduced by a polyethylene skin or blend. The high molecular weight and gel-derived porous structure limit thermal collapse but not shutdown response. This is a critical limitation that cell designers must address through separator architecture rather than resin selection.
UHMWPE 8020 ECO-B is supplied as a powder for ram extrusion of rod, sheet, and profile stock. On a single-ram extruder with a barrel temperature of 220–250 °C and a die land length-to-diameter ratio of 10:1–14:1, the powder compacts at 25–45 MPa and exits as a continuous sintered profile. The fusing quality is checked by cutting a 500 mm section and freezing it at -80 °C for not less than 4 h before impact splitting. In food-contact conveyor lines, machined wear strips and chain guides are subject to dimensional stability requirements under wet cleaning cycles. The converter uses FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 as the food-contact resin reference. The finished article must meet EU 10/2011 overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² when tested with simulant D1 or D2 as appropriate. The material shows sliding abrasion resistance in dry sand-slurry tests per ASTM D3702. Mass loss is substantially lower than metal guides, but published comparative values for this grade are limited. The processing boundary is oxidative degradation at the die exit. Natural powder can generate yellowing or gel defects if barrel temperature exceeds 260 °C or if cooling water flow to the die flange is interrupted. The grade should not be blended with low-viscosity polyethylene to ease flow. The resulting phase separation reduces weld line strength in thick sections. Post-machining annealing at 120 °C for 2 h in air is typical to relieve residual stress before food-contact release testing.
Wear strips machined for meat processing lines are cleaned with 80–90 °C water and quaternary ammonium compounds. The converter should not rely solely on resin certification. The finished part is extracted in 95% ethanol at 60 °C for 2 h to simulate fatty foods, with total migration results below the EU 10/2011 limit. A failure that appears only after machining is surface microcracking at sharp notches. This is prevented by using a tool rake angle of 8–12° and a cutting speed below 600 m/min.
For sintered venting disks and membrane support screens, powder particles are compacted in a mold and sintered at 200–230 °C without full densification. The powder is screen-sieved to 100–300 µm, filled into a circular die, compacted at 5–15 MPa, and heated for 30–60 min to achieve pore throat diameters of 10–40 µm and a maximum operating differential pressure of 0.6 MPa when backed by stainless steel mesh. For food-contact air vents, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 applies, but the porous form must be tested separately because surface area affects extraction.
Gel-spun fiber converters employ decalin at 130–150 °C at polymer concentration 6–12 wt%. The solution is extruded through a spinneret, quenched in water, and drawn at total draw ratios up to 40:1. The high molecular weight of the grade retards chain reptation, which raises spinneret back pressure. Continuous solution filtration at 20 µm or finer prevents gel particles from reaching the spinneret. The final yarn is tested according to ASTM D885 for tensile strength and modulus. Published data for this exact grade in gel spinning is limited. The converter should qualify dissolution time and shear history on a pilot line before committing to a multi-end production winder. Terminal products are ballistic prepregs, cut-resistant gloves, and offshore mooring ropes. For ballistic laminates, the fiber is coated with a matrix resin and consolidated at 115–125 °C under 15–25 MPa. The limitation is creep at continuous load above 40 °C. Design stress is kept below 0.3 GPa for long-term static mooring. REACH compliance for the solvent and spin-finish system must be documented separately from the polymer itself.
After spinning, filament residual solvent is reduced to below 100 ppm by extraction in n-hexane and hot-air drawing at 120–140 °C. The final tow is wound on precision winders with tension control of ±5%. A batch-to-batch concern is the increase of solution viscosity with storage time if the dope is held above 130 °C for more than 60 min. Producers use chilled storage at 40–50 °C for intermediate holding.
Converter qualification for orthopaedic bearing stock usually starts with compression-moulded slabs from the same resin lot. The slab is moulded at 210–220 °C under 8–12 MPa for 20–30 min, then slowly cooled at 0.1–0.5 °C/min to improve crystallinity and reduce free radicals. Machined acetabular cups and tibial inserts are sterilised by ethylene oxide or gas plasma. ISO 5834-2 and ISO 10993-1 are the controlling documents. This specific grade should not be assumed to be implant-grade without lot-specific certification from the compound supplier. The user must verify absence of calcium stearate and other processing aids. Some UHMWPE grades contain calcium stearate as a corrosion inhibitor and wall slip agent. This additive can affect oxidative stability under in vivo conditions. The ECO-B version may require separate documentation of bio-circular feedstock mass balance under ISCC PLUS. That chain-of-custody record is not a substitute for implant-grade qualification.
The forming section of a fourdrinier machine uses suction box covers and foil faces machined from 8020 ECO-B sheet with a blade angle of 1–5° relative to the wire. Wet-end pH between 4 and 8 typically gives acceptable wear. Continuous service at pH below 3 or above 12 is not recommended. The component is machined to a tolerance of ±0.05 mm across a 3 m length and surface roughness Ra 0.8 µm or lower. Frictional work against polyester forming fabrics is measured in the laboratory using a rotating disk tribometer. No universal ISO method covers all mill conditions. The end user should validate wear rate against forming fabric life. Field data for this grade in paper machines is limited.
In chamber filter presses handling bleaching filtrate, the material is used for plate sealing surfaces and suspension nozzles. The pH around 10 with residual chlorine dioxide at 50–70 °C demands oxidation resistance. Chemical resistance is assessed by mass and tensile retention after immersion per ASTM D543. UHMWPE 8020 ECO-B resists hydrolytic attack but prolonged exposure to strong oxidising species at elevated temperature reduces molecular weight. The plate sealing face should be torque-limited to 20–40 N·m based on manufacturer guidance. The plate is machined from sheet stock and tested for flattening under load at 80 °C using a dial indicator. Out-of-flatness greater than 0.5 mm leads to bypass leakage. The material is not recommended for concentrated nitric acid above 60% or for continuous exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons.
