Application of Braskem ML3601U LLDPE Rotomolding Polyethylene

In vented, double-walled containment basins with 10–15 mm nominal wall thickness, Braskem ML3601U is processed as a 35-mesh rotomoulding powder after cryogenic pulverization on a 45 kW disk mill. The grade’s 0.935 g/cm³ density (ASTM D1505) and melt flow rate of 3.5 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg (ASTM D1238) establish a processing window in which internal air temperature reaches 280–300 °C while the mold surface is held at 220–230 °C for 18–22 min during the curing plateau. Compliance for upright storage tanks is assessed under ASTM D1998-21, while secondary containment structures are designed under EPA 40 CFR 264.175. Food-contact uses fall under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. Formulation addition ratios for this scene are 100 parts by weight ML3601U, 2.5 parts of a 2% carbon black/UV HALS masterbatch, 0.15 parts hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.10 parts phosphite co-stabilizer. Downstream, the powder is loaded into a multi-axis shuttle machine with a 2.6 m swing arm, heated under forced air at 290 °C for 18 min, then cooled with 5–7 °C/min forced air and water mist only below 90 °C surface temperature to minimize warpage. Terminal products include vertical storage tanks, secondary containment basins, dosing cabinets, and double-walled sump liners.

What Changes When Diesel Immersion Replaces Aqueous Alkali Exposure?

Diesel immersion shifts design emphasis from environmental stress cracking in alkaline media to dimensional stability under ASTM D543-21 exposure, with the rotomoulded wall measured after 70 h at 50 °C in IRM 903 oil. The ML3601U formulation for fuel-adjacent tanks uses 100 parts by weight ML3601U, 2.0 parts of carbon black masterbatch with 1 µm average agglomerate size, 0.15 parts zinc stearate as internal mold release, and 0.10 parts phosphite co-stabilizer. No post-mould flame treatment is applied because oxidation reduces weld-line elongation at the parting line. Compliance is evaluated under EN 13341:2005 + A1:2011 for static thermoplastic tanks for heating oil, with additional permeability testing referenced to SAE J1737 for diesel permeation. On a double-shuttle machine with rotating arm speed 4.2 rpm, a two-piece steel mold is used; the oven setpoint of 285 °C is maintained until internal air temperature reaches 265–275 °C, after which cooling is quenched at 6 °C/min until 120 °C, then slowed to 2 °C/min to avoid stress cracking at boss inserts. Terminal products include generator fuel day tanks, agricultural auxiliary diesel tanks, marine fuel saddles, and hydraulic reservoir covers.

Agricultural Water Troughs and the UV Stabilizer Loading Window

Rotational molds for livestock water troughs are charged with a dry blend of 100 parts by weight ML3601U, 0.25 parts hindered amine light stabilizer, 0.15 parts phenolic antioxidant, and 2.0 parts carbon black masterbatch. The 2.2 wt% total pigment/stabilizer fraction is maintained below 3.0 wt% because higher loadings reduce ESCR F50 values by more than 30% in ASTM D1693-15b condition B testing. NSF/ANSI 61 applies for potable water contact, ISO 17885-1:2018 governs dimensional tolerances and quality requirements for rotomoulded parts, and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 applies where the trough is used for animal drinking water in export jurisdictions. Downstream, the powder is processed on a four-arm independent carousel with a swing radius of 2.8 m; peak internal air temperature is 255–265 °C, mold surface temperature is 210–220 °C, and the cooling cycle uses forced air to 95 °C followed by 15 °C water mist at 10 L/min to maintain flatness across a 1.8 m trough length. Terminal products include dairy calf waterers, sheep troughs, cistern liners, and irrigation header tanks.

Because material-handling bins are demolded at wall thicknesses between 6 mm and 9 mm and then subjected to forklift tine impact at −20 °C, the ML3601U formulation is adjusted to 100 parts by weight resin, 1.8 parts carbon black masterbatch, 0.20 parts antioxidant, and 5–15 parts of internally generated post-industrial regrind from spur trimmings, provided the regrind particle distribution is controlled through a 40-mesh screen after disk mill pulverization. Regrind above 15 parts creates internal voiding near rib intersections when melt flow index shifts upward more than 0.5 g/10 min. This scenario is evaluated under ISO 8611-1:2021 for flat pallet test methods and ISO 8611-2:2021 for performance requirements in pallet handling, while food-contact tubs fall under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. During production, a rock-and-roll machine with 45° tilt angle and 4:1 rotation ratio is used to distribute melt into cavity ribs; internal air temperature reaches 275–285 °C, and cooling is staged from 5 °C/min in air to 90 °C, followed by pressurized air at 0.4 MPa through internal cores to set rib deflection below 2 mm/m. Terminal products include insulated fish tubs, nestable bulk bins, pallet boxes, and ribbed container bases.

If Marine Buoyancy Modules Require Foam-Core Back-Filling and Low-Temperature Impact

Marine buoyancy modules with 8–12 mm skin thickness are rotationally moulded from a formulation of 100 parts by weight ML3601U, 2.5 parts UV-HALS masterbatch, 0.15 parts antioxidant, and 0.10 parts processing aid. After demoulding, closed-cell polyurethane foam of 60 kg/m³ nominal core density is injected through a 50 mm vent hole, and the foaming pressure is limited to 0.15 MPa to prevent skin delamination at the weld line. Compliance for recreational craft components is referenced to the applicable conformity procedures of Directive 2013/53/EU, and buoyancy retention is verified by a 28-day water absorption test under ISO 2896:2001, with volume change limited to 5%. In process terms, the mould is filled on a shuttle machine with a 3.0 m swing arm and heated to an internal air temperature of 260–270 °C for 20–24 min; the cooling cycle uses 5 °C/min forced air until 80 °C, then the part is removed from the mold and post-cured for 24 h at 40 °C before foam injection. Terminal products include mooring buoys, boat fenders, aquaculture cage floats, and pontoon float shells.

Playground Enclosures Are Governed by EN 71-3 Migration Limits, Not Only by Wall Thickness

When rotomoulded panels are intended for children’s play equipment, the formulation uses 100 parts by weight ML3601U, 2.0 parts heavy-metal-free pigment masterbatch, 0.20 parts antioxidant, and 0.10 parts zinc stearate. Migration-limit compliance is tested under EN 71-3:2019 + A1:2021 for specific elements, ASTM F963-23 for heavy-element solubility and mechanical hazards, REACH EC 1907/2006 Annex XVII for restricted substances, and EU 2009/48/EC for toy safety. Heavy-metal-free organic pigments can shift the processing window by ±5 °C depending on particle size and IR absorption behavior; certain organic reds extend cycle time because they absorb less oven radiation than carbon black. Production uses double-walled two-piece steel molds on a shuttle machine with internal air temperature at 260–270 °C and mold surface temperature at 210–220 °C. Cooling proceeds at 5 °C/min to 85 °C, and no external mold release is applied to avoid surface migration that would compromise EN 71-3 extraction results. Terminal products include slides, climbing structure panels, tunnel roofs, and ride-on shell panels.
