Application of Braskem FLEXUS VLDPE 9212XP

Braskem FLEXUS VLDPE 9212XP is introduced as a metallocene-catalysed very low-density polyethylene component in the sealant skin of asymmetric five-layer blown film structures intended for low-seal-temperature flexible packaging. On a five-layer coextrusion line equipped with an internally cooled bubble and segmented air ring, the sealant skin layer is commonly fed from an extruder with a 30D grooved feed section and a barrier screw; melt temperature is maintained between 190 °C and 205 °C while the die gap is set at 1.8 mm. The bubble is run with a blow-up ratio of 2.5:1 to 3.0:1, and the frost line height is raised until the web reaches a target total thickness of 45 µm to 70 µm. When the sealant skin ratio is held at 12% to 18% of total thickness, the expected seal initiation shift relative to a Ziegler-Natta LLDPE skin of equivalent density is assessed through a heat-seal temperature ladder, but published data for this specific configuration is limited. The finished laminate is tested under ASTM F88/F88M across a temperature ladder from 95 °C to 130 °C with a dwell time of 0.5 s and jaw pressure of 275 kPa. Seal strengths are not accepted below 12 N/25 mm in the 110 °C to 120 °C window for retortable outer pouches. Hot tack is evaluated according to ASTM F1921 at a seal pressure of 0.275 MPa and a delay time of 250 ms; hot tack values above 1.4 N/25 mm at 105 °C are considered the pass criterion on vertical form-fill-seal lines. Food contact compliance is maintained under 21 CFR 177.1520(c) and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, with overall migration verified by EN 1186-1. The resin is not predried when silo relative humidity is below 60%; if hopper loading occurs after long outdoor storage, a desiccant bed at 60 °C for 2 h is applied before extrusion.

The end products include frozen food laminates, stand-up pouch side gussets, and flow-wrap confectionery film where low odour and organoleptic neutrality are specified. Processors must monitor die lip smoke because VLDPE-rich skins oxidise more readily above 210 °C; the resulting waxy build-up on the air ring lowers bubble cooling uniformity. Amide slip masterbatches above 1500 ppm in the sealant layer can bloom to the surface and depress seal strength; the addition is therefore limited to 800 ppm to 1200 ppm erucamide, with migration testing by EN 1186-1 after 10 days at 40 °C. Incompatibility with high-vinyl-acetate EVA skins is not primarily chemical; rather, the different solidification shrinkage across the bubble can cause web bagginess when both skins exceed 20% of total thickness. A tie layer of maleic anhydride-grafted LLDPE is required only when the structure includes an EVOH barrier core, because VLDPE alone does not bond to EVOH at typical die temperatures below 220 °C.

What Hot Tack Response Changes When Sealant Thickness Drops Below 12 µm?

On a five-layer blown film line running VLDPE 9212XP as the heat-seal layer, the interaction of low sealant thickness with gauge variation controls hot tack consistency. When the sealant layer is reduced from 15 µm to 8 µm, the melt layer available for interdiffusion during sealing becomes more sensitive to caliper deviations above ±1.5 µm. Hot tack values measured by ASTM F1921 can vary by as much as 0.6 N/25 mm across the web when the die lip opening is widened beyond 2.0 mm to raise throughput. Processors therefore keep the die gap at 1.6 mm to 1.8 mm and set the lower frost line so that the sealant skin exits the die at an apparent shear rate below 150 s⁻¹. Melt temperature is limited to 200 °C in the sealant extruder; above this threshold, low-molecular-weight fractions migrate to the film surface and reduce hot tack at 105 °C. The cooling air temperature is held at 8 °C to 12 °C with a dual-lip air ring. For high-speed vertical form-fill-seal equipment running at 60 bags/min, a sealant layer below 10 µm demands a jaw profile with serrated edges because the reduced melt cushion cannot fill substrate surface irregularities.

End structures include 10 µm sealant webs for high-speed stick-pack lines; converters should not use this layer directly against EVOH without a coextrudable adhesive. For the sealant layer itself, addition of 5 wt% to 10 wt% LDPE lowers melt strength and is avoided on oscillating haul-off lines because width variation exceeds 2%. Polypropylene-rich sealant formulations are incompatible at the melt interface; a distinct HDPE skin between PP and VLDPE is used to prevent delamination at side seals.

Cast stretch film production using VLDPE 9212XP rarely uses the resin as a neat skin because high cling requires modified surfaces. Instead, the grade is metered into the core layer of a three-layer cast line at 15% to 30% of total weight, with the skin layers based on a low-melt-index LLDPE or EVA. The cast line is configured with a multi-manifold die, a polished chill roll at 20 °C, and an air knife. Line speeds above 500 m/min require melt temperatures no higher than 220 °C to avoid build-up on the die lips. Core-layer addition of VLDPE 9212XP is intended to raise puncture resistance and stretch consistency without increasing extractable content. Puncture resistance is evaluated using ASTM D5748; stretch force is recorded on a high-speed stretch film tester at 200% elongation. Films with 20 wt% VLDPE in the core commonly show a puncture resistance gain of 8% to 15% over a pure LLDPE core of equivalent thickness, but published data for this specific grade is limited. End goods are machine pallet wraps for A-prestretch systems operating at 250% elongation; converter specifications require residual elongation at break above 300% and unwind noise below 75 dB at 10 m/min.

Extrusion Lamination Onto Aluminium Foil: Adhesion and Off-Odour Limits

Extrusion lamination of VLDPE 9212XP onto aluminium foil is used in sachet and tube laminates where seal through liquid contamination is required. The resin is extruded through a T-slot die with a die gap of 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm, at melt temperature 215 °C to 235 °C. The melt curtain is drawn down to 12 µm to 25 µm and pressed onto the foil between a chill roll and a pressure roll at 0.3 MPa; the foil is preheated to 40 °C to 60 °C. Adhesion to aluminium is oxidation-dependent; converters run the melt at 220 °C or above to generate polar carbonyl groups. Peel strength is measured by ASTM D1876 after 24 h under 23 °C and 50% RH. Values below 4 N/15 mm generally indicate insufficient melt oxidation or moisture on the foil. For a 20 µm coating, neck-in should be controlled below 15% through air gap adjustment and draw ratio; a chill roll surface roughness of Ra 0.8 µm to 1.2 µm prevents air entrapment. End products include overwrap laminates for non-aseptic pharmaceutical outer sachets and double-layer sachets for detergent pods; the VLDPE layer acts as a sealant against PET or BOPP printed webs. Off-odour is controlled by maintaining melt temperature below 240 °C and verifying residual aldehyde content not above 0.5 ppm by HPLC; published data for this grade in foil lamination is limited.

Coextrusion with an EVA layer in a tandem laminator is possible but line speed is limited by the EVA thermal degradation at 230 °C. The VLDPE 9212XP layer should not be exposed to air gap distances above 200 mm at melt temperature above 225 °C because oxidative gel particles form and cause die lines. Barrier laminates containing paper or metallised PET use this layer as the innermost sealant; seal strengths are determined after contamination with vegetable oil according to ASTM F88/F88M, and values must remain above 8 N/25 mm after 10 s dwell at 115 °C.

When VLDPE 9212XP Is Dry-Blended at 15 wt% Into Rotomoulding LLDPE

When VLDPE 9212XP is dry-blended at 15 wt% into rotomoulding LLDPE, the dry blend is intended to raise low-temperature impact and environmental stress crack resistance in rotationally moulded chemical tanks and agricultural water tanks. The powder is mixed in a high-shear mixer with 35 °C water cooling to keep the blend below 45 °C; the blend is then charged into a biaxial rotational moulding machine with a peak internal air temperature of 190 °C to 200 °C. Release of volatiles is controlled by a forced-air oven exhaust. ESCR is tested using ASTM D1693, condition B, in 10% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C; a failure time below 400 h is considered inadequate for chemical tank service. Low-temperature impact is measured by ISO 6603-2 at -20 °C; total energy absorption is reported at 23 J or below when the blend contains less than 10 wt% VLDPE, but rises with increasing VLDPE content. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the 15 wt% addition should be validated by pilot moulding because particle-size mismatch can segregate during charging. The inner wall surface of tanks exhibits lower burr formation and reduced microvoids when the powder MFI difference between the two resins is less than 0.4 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg. End products include 500 L to 5000 L closed-head storage tanks, sprayer booms, and liners for steel vessels. In rotomoulded parts, VLDPE alone is not used because it exhibits lower rigidity and higher creep than a rotomoulding LLDPE; it is always a let-down component.

Replacing EVA in heavy-duty form-fill-seal inner plies with VLDPE 9212XP shifts the failure mode from stress cracking and seal contamination to dart impact and hot tack stability. On a three-layer blown film line with a 250 mm die and a blow-up ratio of 2.0:1, the inner ply is run at 35 µm to 60 µm total thickness, with VLDPE 9212XP occupying 70% to 100% of the inner layer. The layer ratio is 1:2:1 for surface layers; the middle layer contains 25% recycled LLDPE trim if the target dart impact under ASTM D1709 method A exceeds 800 g. Sealing is conducted at 105 °C to 115 °C on an FFS line with dwell times of 0.8 s to 1.2 s; seal strength is recorded under ASTM F88/F88M and must remain above 20 N/25 mm after a 30 min delay at 40 °C to simulate warehouse storage. The end product is heavy-duty sacks for resin pellets, polymerised fertiliser, and mineral powders. Process limitations include melt temperature not exceeding 210 °C in the die to avoid gels; if the line is stopped for more than 20 min, the die should be purged with LDPE to prevent carbonyl formation in the VLDPE melt. Slip and antiblock are additive-controlled; silica-based antiblock above 2000 ppm reduces dart impact below the acceptance threshold and is therefore limited to 1000 ppm to 1500 ppm.

Compounding a Low-Temperature Impact Modifier Masterbatch for Polypropylene Copolymer

On a 75 mm twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 44:1, a low-temperature impact modifier masterbatch for polypropylene copolymer using VLDPE 9212XP is compounded at a screw speed of 350 rpm. The formulation consists of 60 wt% VLDPE 9212XP, 20 wt% LLDPE, 10 wt% talc, and 10 wt% of a PP-g-MAH compatibiliser. The extruder temperature profile is set from 160 °C in the feed zone to 210 °C at the die, with vacuum devolatilisation at -0.09 MPa. Impact improvement in the target injection-moulded PP is assessed by notched Izod under ISO 180/A at -20 °C and by puncture energy under ISO 6603-2. Addition of 10 wt% of the masterbatch raises the low-temperature puncture energy of a 20% talc-filled PP from 8 J to 14 J, although published data for this specific configuration is limited. The compound is pelletised by underwater die-face cutting at 40 °C water temperature. End products include automotive interior door trim backings, battery case corners, and appliance housings where gloss reduction from VLDPE is offset by talc. The masterbatch must not be processed above 230 °C because the VLDPE phase begins to crosslink or gel; residual moisture after vacuum stripping is kept below 0.05% by Karl Fischer titration. Regulatory compliance for the final compounded article is verified under REACH Article 33 and the relevant food-contact or industrial safety requirements on the specific converter application.
