Application of Borealis Queo VLDPE 8201LA

On three-layer coextrusion blown-film lines fitted with a 45 mm skin extruder of 24:1 L/D, a 55 mm core extruder, and a 35 mm outer-layer extruder, Borealis Queo VLDPE 8201LA is placed in the sealant skin of flexible food-packaging laminates. The grade has a density of 0.882 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1 and an MFR of 1.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022. In production, the sealant skin is run either as 100% 8201LA or as a blend containing 20–40 wt% 8201LA with an LDPE carrier of MFR 0.7–1.0 g/10 min. Skin melt temperatures are set between 190 °C and 220 °C, with the die held at 205–215 °C on blown lines and chill-roll temperatures maintained at 18–22 °C on cast lines. The low crystallinity of the ethylene-1-octene copolymer reduces the seal initiation point relative to a conventional LLDPE skin of density 0.918 g/cm³, but the absolute shift must be verified on the specific line using a JIS Z 0238 or ASTM F2029 heat-seal tester. In blown-film processing, a blow-up ratio of 2.0–3.0 and a frost-line height of 3–4 times die diameter are typical; a fluoropolymer processing aid at 0.03–0.10 wt% may be added to suppress melt fracture at output rates above 0.8 kg/h per cm of die circumference. Sealant formulas for hot-fill or retort structures commonly include slip and antiblock masterbatches at 2–5 wt%, and the resulting coefficient of friction is determined by ASTM D1894 rather than by the 8201LA concentration alone. For food-contact use, the sealant layer must satisfy the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and the extractables specifications of FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c), with testing conducted under final package time and temperature conditions. End articles include stand-up pouch sealant webs, lidding films for dairy cups, and inner layers for bakery packaging.

Tear-initiation and dart-impact reserves in machine-direction stretch hood film

High-stalk blown-film lines with die diameters of 250–400 mm, die gaps of 1.0–1.4 mm, and blow-up ratios of 3.5–4.5 use 8201LA in the outer skins at 15–25 wt% relative to total layer weight, let down into LDPE or LLDPE. The melt is characterized by a low zero-shear viscosity, so internal bubble cooling is typically set to maintain a neck height of 5–7 die diameters and a frost-line height of 3.5–4.5 die diameters. Mechanical demand is quantified by ISO 7765-1 dart drop, ASTM D5748 puncture, and Elmendorf tear ASTM D1922. The contribution of 8201LA appears as an increase in puncture propagation resistance and dart impact, while tear performance is more strongly controlled by orientation state and layer distribution than by the resin alone. During pallet-winding runs at 80–120 cycles/h, film rolls can block if the outer skin exceeds 25 wt% 8201LA and winding tension exceeds 0.5 N/mm, particularly in storage areas above 30 °C. This production failure mode is managed with a low-migration antiblock package and by setting taper tension no higher than 35% of initial winding tension. The density of 0.882 g/cm³ lowers secant modulus measured by ISO 527-3, which allows the hood to recover over pallet corners without stress whitening. Creep resistance under sustained load is lower than that of LDPE-rich skins, so load-retention tests per EN 14932 or equivalent regional standard should be run before the film is specified for long-distance pallet unitization. End articles are stretch hoods for building materials, beverage pallets, and chemical bag stacks where puncture from protruding edges is the principal failure mode.

A twin-screw compounding campaign on a co-rotating extruder with 25–40 mm screw diameter and 40:1 L/D positions 8201LA as a metallocene ethylene-1-octene impact modifier in polypropylene homopolymer matrices intended for injection-molded interior trims. The grade is added at 10–30 wt%, typically with 0.1–0.3 wt% of a phenolic/phosphate antioxidant blend, using a side feeder for the pellet fraction after the PP melt has reached 190–210 °C. Strand temperatures above 240 °C should be avoided because the low-melting 8201LA phase can adhere to the die plate and produce pellet tails. Notched Charpy impact values by ISO 179-1/1eA and heat deflection temperature by ISO 75-2/B are influenced by the domain size of the dispersed elastomer phase, which is controlled by screw speed, residence time, and melt filtration. Production runs frequently use melt filtration at 80–120 µm to remove agglomerates. The compound can be injection-moulded at melt temperatures of 200–230 °C and mould temperatures of 20–40 °C. Moulded articles such as door claddings and glove-box surrounds are tested for fogging by ISO 6452 and VOC by VDA 278. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so the practical upper addition level must be determined on the actual tool because a sharp drop in tensile modulus occurs as the elastomer fraction exceeds 20 wt% in thin-wall sections below 2.0 mm.

Why is 8201LA considered for low-smoke halogen-free cable filler compounds?

Compounding low-voltage cable filler and jacketing compounds with 8201LA is carried out on counter-rotating twin-screw extruders fitted with side feeders at zone 5 of 10. The polymer phase is blended with EVA of vinyl acetate content 18–28 wt%, LDPE, magnesium hydroxide or aluminium trihydrate at 150–170 phr, and processing stabilizers. 8201LA is added at 20–40 phr to reduce melt viscosity and to improve filler dispersion. Screw temperatures are maintained at 120–150 °C in the initial zones and 160–180 °C in the metering zone. Die-head pressure is monitored because excessive pressure can disrupt strand uniformity. Fire performance is assessed according to IEC 60332-1-2 for single-wire flame spread, while smoke acidity and conductivity are checked by IEC 60754-2. These tests depend primarily on the filler system, but the polyolefin phase must not add fuel value that pushes the oxygen index below the required level. An operational limitation observed on production lines is that 8201LA-rich compounds are more sensitive to shear heating than EVA-rich compounds. Screw speed is therefore kept below 250 rpm in 40 mm twins, and melt temperature is held below 170 °C to prevent deactivation of acid-scavenging additives. The final compound is extruded as cable filler strands in fibre-optic and automotive low-voltage harnesses, where the density of 0.882 g/cm³ helps reduce weight per cable unit length.

When 8201LA replaces EVA in chemically crosslinked closed-cell polyolefin foam

For chemically crosslinked closed-cell foam produced by continuous sheet extrusion and hot-air expansion, 8201LA is compounded with azodicarbonamide at 2–8 phr, dicumyl peroxide at 0.4–1.2 phr, and zinc oxide at 1–3 phr. Because the decomposition onset of azodicarbonamide is near 195–210 °C, the compounding extruder is run with barrel temperatures no higher than 110–120 °C and a strand die temperature of 100–110 °C to avoid premature blowing. The compounded sheet is then crosslinked and expanded in a hot-air oven at 220–240 °C, with residence time adjusted to the peroxide half-life selected. Final foam density is determined by ISO 845, and compression set is determined by ISO 815-1. Both properties depend on decomposition pressure and gel content. 8201LA at density 0.882 g/cm³ permits lower shear heating than EVA but may require a higher crosslinker dosage to reach equivalent gel content above 60%. Production experience indicates that foams with 8201LA skins can show higher surface tack immediately after the expansion oven, so forced-air cooling zones are set to bring the sheet surface below 50 °C before wind-up. End articles are thermal insulation sleeves, buoyancy rods, and compression gaskets where closed-cell structure and low water absorption per ASTM D1056 are specified.
