Application of Borealis Queo VLDPE 1001

On vertical form-fill-seal lines running coextruded films at 60–100 packs/min, Borealis Queo 1001 is specified as the sealant layer at 15–30 wt% of total film mass. The material has a nominal density of 0.910 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1 and a melt flow rate of 1.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1. The sealant layer is coextruded against an LLDPE or MDPE core and an outer printable skin, with the VLDPE-rich side facing the sealing jaw. On rotary-drum jaw systems with serrated profiles, the seal initiation temperature falls below that of a 0.923 g/cm³ LDPE sealant when measured by ASTM F2029 on 25 µm monolayer films at 0.4 s dwell. Heat-seal strength is evaluated per ASTM F88 at 300 mm/min peel speed; comparative production trials on a 40 m/min VFFS line with 2.5 bar jaw pressure and 125 °C jaw temperature typically yield cohesive peel values above 8 N/15 mm, though published data for this specific configuration is limited. Hot-tack is measured on a J&B hot-tack tester or equivalent per ASTM F1921 Method B, and the low crystalline fraction of the VLDPE provides a wider hot-tack plateau than EVA or ionomer sealants at equivalent thickness. The sealant layer is frequently modified with 5–15 wt% high-pressure LDPE to stabilize the preceding blown film bubble and with 0.05–0.15 wt% erucamide slip or 0.1–0.3 wt% silica antiblock to control coefficient of friction on horizontal jaw closures. Food-contact status in the European Union is governed by EU 10/2011 with total migration testing per EN 1186, and in the United States by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers. Terminal packages include pillow bags for frozen vegetables, gusseted flat-bottom bags for dry flowable foods, and stick packs for powdered beverage mixes.

Why Does Low Melt Tension in Metallocene VLDPE Limit Blow-Up Ratio Stability on Three-Layer Blown Film Lines?

Bubble stability in a three-layer blown film line is affected by the low melt tension of Queo 1001 relative to high-pressure LDPE. The die configuration commonly uses a 250 mm spiral mandrel die with 1.8–2.4 mm die gap, three extruders of 45/65/45 mm screw diameter and 25:1 L/D, and a dual-lip air ring. The VLDPE is placed in one or both skin layers at 20–40 wt% of the skin formulation, with the balance split between LLDPE and LDPE. The LDPE fraction in the skin layers should remain at 15–30 wt% when the blow-up ratio exceeds 2.5:1; below this addition, bubble flutter at the frost line becomes measurable and film gauge variation increases beyond ±5% on a 60 µm film. Melt temperatures are maintained between 170 °C and 210 °C because temperatures below 170 °C produce visible melt fracture and temperatures above 210 °C reduce bubble cooling efficiency. Frost line height is set at 4–8 die diameters, depending on line speed and ambient air temperature. Film properties are tested by ASTM D882 for tensile strength, ASTM D1922 for Elmendorf tear, and ASTM D1709 Method B for drop dart impact. Queo 1001 in the skin layers raises puncture resistance and low-temperature impact strength relative to C4-LLDPE skins; however, film stiffness decreases because the density of 0.910 g/cm³ corresponds to a reduced crystalline fraction. Terminal products include freezer film, heavy-duty liners, and agricultural silage cover film. Compliance with EU 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 is required for direct food contact in frozen vegetable and meat packaging.

When Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Sealants Are Replaced in Medical Device Pouch Laminates

Medical device pouches incorporating a Queo 1001 sealant web replace EVA because EVA can generate acetic acid odor during heat sealing and can contribute to seal yellowing after autoclave or gamma sterilization. The structure typically consists of a 50 µm VLDPE blown film laminated with a 12 µm polyester outer web and a Tyvek 1073B or medical paper lid, with the VLDPE film facing the Tyvek or paper. Seal validation is performed under ISO 11607-1, and seal strength is measured per ASTM F88 on 25 mm wide samples after conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH. Rotary heat sealers using 130–140 °C jaw temperature, 0.5–1.0 s dwell, and 300 N jaw force produce peelable or destruct seals depending on adhesive coating weight and Tyvek grade. Cytocompatibility is evaluated per ISO 10993-5, and the resin must meet USP <88> Class VI criteria for certain implant-adjacent packaging. Sterilization compatibility data for Queo 1001 under ethylene oxide is more established than under gamma irradiation; published data for this specific configuration is limited for doses above 25 kGy, and processing conditions must be verified because crosslinking in the VLDPE phase can shift seal behavior. The converted pouches are used for surgical device blister lids, IVD kit pouches, and prefilled syringe overwrap. Storage below 40 °C and avoidance of amine-based slip additives are recommended because amine chemistry can interact with residual metallocene catalyst residues and alter seal consistency.

At cast film installations with 2,200 mm flat dies and chill rolls held at 18–23 °C, Borealis Queo 1001 is blended into LLDPE-based formulations at 10–25 wt% for stretch hoods and high-toughness industrial overwrap. The cast film line uses a 90 mm extruder with 30:1 L/D and a barrier screw, a vacuum box and air knife for edge pinning, and a line speed of 200–350 m/min. The VLDPE lowers the crystalline melting plateau and increases the stretch capacity of the film without migrating plasticizers; elongation at break per ASTM D882 increases as a function of VLDPE addition, while elastic recovery is assessed under ASTM D5459. The film’s permanent deformation after 100% elongation is a critical control for pallet load containment. Cling is not intrinsic to Queo 1001 and requires addition of 0.3–0.8 wt% glycerol monostearate or polyisobutylene-based cling agent in the outer layers, with antiblock added to the opposite surface at 0.1–0.3 wt% to prevent blocking on the roll. Edge trim and die-lip build-up must be monitored because VLDPE-rich melts have lower melt tension than LLDPE and can draw away from the pinning device if the air gap exceeds 25 mm. The terminal products are stretch hood films for palletized construction materials, furniture overwrap, and heavy-gauge agricultural binding film. Food-contact status follows EU 10/2011 for non-fatty dry goods, and oil migration testing per EN 1186-2 is required if the film contacts fatty goods.

Extrusion Coating Melt Draw Geometry and Neck-In Against Paperboard, Foil, and Metallised Film

Melt draw geometry in extrusion coating with Queo 1001 is governed by melt index, die gap, air gap, and the ratio of melt curtain width to coating width. A typical line uses a 120 mm 24:1 L/D extruder, a 300 mm flat die with internal deckles, a 200–250 mm air gap, and a chill roll maintained at 15–20 °C. Queo 1001 is blended with high-pressure LDPE at 20–40 wt% to increase melt strength and reduce draw resonance; a pure VLDPE melt can develop edge weave at line speeds above 150 m/min. The melt temperature at the die exit is held between 280 °C and 315 °C, with nitrogen blanket over the die lips to limit oxidation. Coating weight is set at 20–40 g/m² on paperboard and 15–25 g/m² on aluminium foil. Neck-in under these conditions is commonly 50–80 mm per side, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and must be verified on the target line. The VLDPE layer serves as the heat-seal surface in liquid cartons, multiwall paper sacks, and sachet laminates; seal strength is measured per ASTM F88 after hot bar sealing at 120–135 °C and 0.4 s dwell. Seal integrity through contaminated board is validated by dye penetration per ASTM F1929. Direct food contact compliance is per FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011, with overall migration of octene comonomer considered under the total migration limit. Terminal products include gable-top liquid cartons, aseptic brick packs, and foil-lined dry soup sachets.

Torque Profiles Shift When Halogen-Free Fillers Exceed 60 wt% in Queo 1001 Jacketing Compounds

When fire-retardant mineral loadings exceed 60 wt% of total compound, mixing torque in a 40:1 L/D co-rotating twin-screw extruder becomes sensitive to the low-density polyethylene matrix of Queo 1001. Halogen-free flame-retardant jacket compounds for building wire use Queo 1001 as the base resin to replace LDPE or LLDPE when flexibility at low temperature is part of the cable specification. A typical formulation contains 100 phr Queo 1001, 120–180 phr magnesium dihydroxide, 50–100 phr aluminium trihydrate, 5–10 phr maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene coupling agent, 0.2–0.5 phr hindered phenolic antioxidant, and 0.5–1.5 phr processing aid. Compounding is performed on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D, 45 mm screw diameter, and atmospheric venting before a side-feeder for mineral fillers. Barrel temperatures are profiled from 120 °C at the feed throat to 170 °C at the die to prevent dehydration of aluminium trihydrate above 200 °C. Mixing torque rises sharply as filler loading exceeds 60 wt% of total compound, and the VLDPE matrix reduces low-temperature brittleness compared with HDPE matrices because the density of 0.910 g/cm³ suppresses crystalline phase continuity. Tensile properties before heat aging are evaluated per IEC 60811-501, and low-temperature elongation at -40 °C per IEC 60811-505. Fire performance is assessed by IEC 60332-1-2 for flame spread, IEC 60754-1 for halogen acid gas content, IEC 61034-2 for smoke density, and UL 94 V-0 for small-scale vertical burn. The presence of amine-based co-additives should be avoided because amine residues can interact with metallocene catalyst residues and alter long-term oxidative induction time measured per ISO 11357-6. The jacketed cable types include low-voltage power distribution cables qualified under IEC 60502-1 and control cables for public buildings.
