Application of Borealis Queo VLDPE 0203

In flexible packaging heat-seal webs, Queo 0203 is blended into the sealant layer of three-layer coextruded blown films where reduced seal initiation temperature and wider hot-tack latitude are required without sacrificing dart impact resistance or tear propagation resistance. The grade has a nominal density of 0.902 g/cm³ when tested according to ISO 1183-1 and a melt mass flow rate of 3.0 g/10 min at 190 °C under 2.16 kg load according to ISO 1133-1. Seal initiation temperature measured according to ASTM F88/F88M-21 on a 30 wt% Queo 0203 sealant layer is typically 6–12 °C lower than a corresponding C6-LLDPE sealant of 0.918 g/cm³ density, and the hot-tack plateau remains above 1.0 N/15 mm for a sealing temperature interval of 15–25 °C. In commercial three-layer structures, the external sealant layer is compounded with 25–35 wt% Queo 0203 in a linear low-density polyethylene of 0.918 g/cm³ density, while the internal sealant layer may contain 20–30 wt% Queo 0203 and the core layer is maintained at 0–10 wt% Queo 0203 to preserve modulus. On a blown film line equipped with a 250 mm three-layer spiral mandrel die, a die gap of 1.8–2.2 mm, and a blow-up ratio of 2.2–2.8:1, the sealant skin is processed at melt temperatures between 175 °C and 210 °C; excessive melt temperature above 220 °C reduces bubble stability because the low-density Queo 0203 phase contributes to melt strength dilution. Frost line height is normally set at 600–900 mm above the die face, and the collapsed film is corona treated to 38–42 mN/m dyne level before printing or lamination. The process-related failure modes most frequently observed at production scale are film blocking and low coefficient of friction when the Queo 0203 content in the sealant layer exceeds 35 wt%, and screw-feeding slip in single-screw extruders with smooth-bore feed zones when pellet temperature at the hopper rises above 40 °C. From a compliance standpoint, the food-contact suitability is assessed under 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers and, in the European Union, under Regulation (EU) 10/2011 with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm²; specific migration testing must be validated on the finished multi-layer structure, not on Queo 0203 resin alone, because coextrudate layers are not considered functional barriers unless the outer layer is a positive barrier. Terminal products include frozen food pouches, dry mix side-gusset bags, stand-up pouches, and surface sealant webs for mono-material polyethylene laminates used in recyclable packaging streams. The formulation split is summarized in the table below.

How Does Queo 0203 Alter the Impact–Stiffness Balance in Heterophasic PP Copolymer Injection Molding Compounds?

Incorporation of Queo 0203 into heterophasic polypropylene copolymers is used to raise low-temperature impact strength without the addition of a separate ethylene-propylene rubber masterbatch. The grade is introduced at 10–25 wt% into a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a 40:1 L/D ratio and a screw diameter of 50–75 mm, using a barrel profile from 180 °C at the feed zone to 230 °C at the die, with specific mechanical energy in the range 0.18–0.26 kWh/kg. In these compounds, the plastomer domains are dispersed in the PP matrix; the low density of 0.902 g/cm³ and the narrow metallocene molecular weight distribution produce a finer dispersed phase than conventional EPDM or EPR modifiers, but phase inversion or co-continuous morphology can occur above 30 wt% Queo 0203, causing a rapid loss of flexural modulus and surface tackiness on injection-molded parts. The compliance tests applied to final compounds include ISO 527-2 for tensile stress and modulus, ISO 179-1/1eA for notched Charpy impact at 23 °C and −20 °C, ISO 6603-2 for instrumented puncture impact at −30 °C, and VDA 277 for total volatile organic compound emission in automotive interior applications where the compound is used in instrument panel carriers or door panel inserts. Production-scale injection molding of the modified compound is performed with clamp force settings 20–30% lower than unfilled PP copolymers at equivalent melt temperature, but mold shrinkage is higher by approximately 0.2–0.5 percentage points because the plastomer reduces crystallinity. Terminal articles include automotive interior carriers, appliance rear panels, vacuum cleaner housings, and industrial storage containers requiring ductile failure at sub-zero temperatures. Published data for the specific Queo 0203 grade in PP impact modification are less extensive than for dedicated EP elastomer modifiers, so the exact impact increment depends on the base PP copolymer ethylene content and the compounding screw configuration.

Halogen-free flame retardant cable compounds often employ metallocene VLDPE as a co-modifier in EVA/LDPE-based systems filled with aluminum trihydrate. In this application Queo 0203 is added at 5–15 wt% of the total polymer phase, with the filler content maintained at 150–180 phr aluminum trihydrate and the remaining polymer phase composed of ethylene-vinyl acetate with a vinyl acetate content of 18–28 wt% and LDPE. The addition of Queo 0203 reduces melt viscosity during batch compounding and improves filler wetting, but it also lowers the tensile strength at break when compared with an EVA-only formulation; therefore the compounder limits the plastomer to the lower end of the range when tensile strength above 10 MPa is specified. The production process is typically performed on a Buss co-kneader or a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a 36:1–44:1 L/D ratio, with all zones held below 170 °C to prevent premature release of moisture from the aluminum trihydrate; the compounded pellets are then discharged into a strand pelletizer and dried to a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt% before cable extrusion. On the cable extrusion line, the compound is processed at a melt temperature of 140–160 °C over a conductor preheated to 80–100 °C, with the extruder screw temperature profile descending toward the die to avoid surface scorch. Compliance is assessed according to IEC 60332-1-2 for flame spread, IEC 60754-1 and IEC 60754-2 for halogen acid gas release, and EN 50267-2-1 for pH and conductivity of the effluent; the compound must also meet IEC 60811-501 for mechanical properties after ageing. Terminal products include low-voltage power cable bedding compounds, control cable sheathing, and flame-retardant railway transit cable insulation where halogen-free performance is specified. A processing limitation exists at ambient relative humidity above 60%, when pre-drying of the aluminum trihydrate and the polymer is required to prevent porosity and surface roughness in the extruded insulation.

Masterbatch Carrier Resin Requirements for Filled Additive Concentrate Production

Masterbatch carriers based on Queo 0203 are used where the concentrate is destined for polyolefin film or injection molding and the active additive requires a low melting temperature for homogeneous incorporation. In high-filler concentrates containing 30–60 wt% of a functional additive such as slip, antiblock, or processing aid, the carrier phase is formulated at 40–70 wt% Queo 0203, optionally blended with LDPE or a metallocene mLLDPE to control pellet hardness. Production is carried out on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a 32:1–48:1 L/D ratio, with the additive injected by side feeder into the melt, followed by underwater pelletizing at a die plate temperature of 150–180 °C; the low density of the carrier permits die-face cutting at lower pressure than LDPE carriers of 0.918 g/cm³ density. Compliance is evaluated in the finished article rather than in the masterbatch: for food-contact packaging applications, the masterbatch supplier is required to provide a declaration of composition under Regulation (EU) 10/2011, and the final film must meet the overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm²; in the United States, the carrier resin falls within 21 CFR 177.1520 subject to end-use limitations. Terminal products include slip/antiblock concentrates for blown film, antioxidant process-stabilizer masterbatches for polyolefin recycling, and color concentrates for thin-wall injection-molded articles. A documented production bottleneck is the formation of fines during strand pelletizing when the Queo 0203 content exceeds 70 wt%, because the solidified strand is softer and elongates before cutting; underwater pelletizing is therefore preferred for carrier loadings above 50 wt%.

In crosslinked polyolefin foam production, Queo 0203 is used as a partial replacement for ethylene-vinyl acetate in closed-cell sheet foam formulations to reduce density while maintaining resilience. The formulation typically includes 15–30 phr Queo 0203 with 70–85 phr EVA having a vinyl acetate content of 18–26%, azodicarbonamide blowing agent at 2.5–4.5 phr, zinc oxide as activator at 0.8–1.2 phr, and dicumyl peroxide at 0.6–1.0 phr for crosslinking. Mixing is performed in an internal mixer with the chamber temperature controlled below 105 °C, because the dicumyl peroxide has a one-hour half-life temperature of approximately 135 °C; the batch is then discharged to a two-roll mill at 80–90 °C, sheeted, and compression molded at 155–170 °C for 10–15 min to complete decomposition of the blowing agent and peroxide. During the foaming stage, the Queo 0203 phase reduces the melt viscosity of the expanding matrix, which can cause cell coalescence if the Queo 0203 addition exceeds 35 phr; production trials demonstrate that cell structure is best maintained when the vicat softening temperature of the formulation is not reduced below 55 °C. The finished foam is tested for density according to ISO 845, compression set according to ISO 815-1, and tear strength according to ISO 34-1; REACH compliance and absence of substances of very high concern are required for consumer goods. Terminal products include yoga mats, exercise mats, sports protective padding, and footwear midsole sheets. A known limitation is that the addition of Queo 0203 lowers the thermal stability of the uncured sheet if the material is stored above 30 °C for more than 48 hours prior to foaming, because the peroxide begins slow decomposition and the blowing agent can migrate to the sheet surface.
