Borealis Queo VLDPE 0201 is a metallocene-catalysed ethylene–1-octene copolymer with a nominal density of 0.902 g/cm³ measured according to ISO 1183-1:2019 and a melt mass-flow rate of 1.1 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg measured according to ISO 1133-1:2022. The narrow molecular weight distribution and controlled comonomer placement produce a crystallinity level below conventional linear-low-density polyethylene, with a DSC peak melting temperature in the region of 97–100 °C (ISO 11357-3:2018). This combination places the grade at the boundary between plastomers and very-low-density polyethylene, and the following downstream applications reflect the grade’s established commercial routes in packaging sealant webs, polypropylene impact modification, halogen-free cable compound, hot melt adhesive, masterbatch carrier, and crosslinked foam.
In three-layer coextruded blown film constructions where the sealant layer must initiate seal below the melting point of the structural layer, Queo VLDPE 0201 is used as the primary sealing resin or as a modifier of an LLDPE sealing layer. On lines equipped with 2.0–2.4 mm die gaps and 1.8–2.5 blow-up ratios, the seal layer is typically processed at melt temperatures of 160–195 °C; increasing beyond 210 °C reduces bubble stability because of the resin’s low melt tension relative to high-density polyethylene. Field observations on three-layer blown-film lines have shown that seal layer concentration below 30 wt% Queo 0201 in an LLDPE blend yields insufficient hot-tack response for high-speed vertical form-fill-seal operations, while 100% VLDPE can generate blocking if reverse-side corona-treated film is wound at room temperature. The addition ratio in the sealant web ranges from 60 to 100 wt% depending on whether the film is used for liquid pouches or frozen food; a typical formulation is 70 wt% Queo 0201 and 30 wt% LDPE (0.923 g/cm³) to provide slip and unwind stability. The sealant surface is corona-treated to 38–42 mN/m surface energy according to ASTM D2578-23, and the coefficient of friction is controlled below 0.4 on the treated film according to ISO 8295:1995. Compliance for food contact requires that the finished structure satisfy FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers and EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I with global migration not exceeding 10 mg/dm² according to EN 1186-1. Heat seal strength is measured according to ASTM F88/F88M-21 on 25 mm strips sealed at 110–130 °C with a 0.5 s dwell; hot tack is evaluated according to ASTM F1921-18 at a seal bar temperature of 105–125 °C because the seal must maintain integrity before solidification when the filled product drops into the pouch. The downstream process is a three-layer blown-film coextrusion with the seal layer occupying 15–30% of total thickness; end product types include frozen vegetable pouches, stand-up pouches, liquid detergent spouted pouches, and overwrap for bakery and meat trays.
Polypropylene homopolymer and high-crystallinity impact copolymers typically show a ductile-to-brittle transition above −10 °C; addition of an ethylene–octene VLDPE shifts the transition to lower temperatures while reducing flexural modulus. The effective addition range is 5–20 wt% Queo VLDPE 0201 in injection-moulded PP compounds; below 5 wt% the sub-ambient Charpy notched impact improvement is often below the minimum required by automotive interior specifications, and above 25 wt% melt flow becomes too dependent on the modifier phase and the flexural modulus may fall below 900 MPa (ISO 178:2019) for many structural parts. In a typical formulation, 15 wt% Queo VLDPE 0201 is combined with PP homopolymer without a compatibilizer system because the metallocene VLDPE disperses as discrete domains with particle sizes under 2 µm in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D and 300–500 rpm. Morphology stability requires that the melt temperature not exceed 240 °C; above this threshold thermo-oxidative chain scission of the PP and VLDPE generates odour, surface streaking, and inconsistent impact performance in automotive parts. Compliance testing follows ISO 179-1/1fU for Charpy notched impact at −20 °C and ISO 6603-2 for instrumented puncture energy; finished automotive parts are additionally evaluated for odour and fogging according to VDA 270 and ISO 6452, respectively. Published exact Charpy and puncture data for PP/Queo 0201 blends are limited because compound performance depends on PP base resin, screw configuration, and moulding conditions; each compound must be tested according to ISO 179-1/1fU and ISO 6603-2. The downstream process is twin-screw compounding at 190–220 °C followed by injection moulding at clamp force 600–1,200 kN with mould temperature 20–40 °C; end product types include door trim substrates, lower bumper fascias, wheel arch liners, and battery-box components in industrial vehicles.
Low-smoke zero-halogen cable insulation compound formulated with 55–65 wt% precipitated alumina trihydrate and magnesium hydroxide requires a polymer matrix that can accommodate high filler loading without emitting acidic gases during combustion. Replacement of 10–20 wt% of the EVA fraction with Queo VLDPE 0201 reduces compound density and improves low-temperature impact after cable installation, but lowers melt strength during the cable extrusion stage. Data from Buss co-kneader formulations show that at 15 wt% Queo 0201, the compound retains an elongation at break above 150% after ageing 7 days at 100 °C (ISO 188:2011) when the filler is surface-treated; with untreated ATH, elongation falls below 120% at the same loading. The addition ratio is expressed as 20–40 phr Queo 0201 on total polymer content, with the final compound containing total mineral filler at 55–65 wt%. Hydrated fillers must be pre-dried at 60–80 °C for 4 h; moisture in ATH above 0.1 wt% creates porosity and surface roughness during cable extrusion, and screw temperatures above 200 °C should be avoided because ATH releases water at 180–220 °C while Queo VLDPE begins thermo-oxidative breakdown if residence times exceed 10 min. A hindered phenolic primary antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 phr is used to protect the polymer phase; amine-based stabilizers should be screened for interaction with flame-retardant synergists because premature colour development has been observed in some HFFR compound lines. Compliance standards are IEC 60754-1 for pH ≥4.3 and conductivity ≤10 µS/mm, IEC 60754-2 for halogen acid gas content ≤0.5%, IEC 61034-2 for smoke density with light transmittance ≥60%, and flame retardance according to IEC 60332-1-2. The downstream process includes compounding on a Buss co-kneader or 40:1 two-stage twin-screw extruder at 140–180 °C, followed by single-screw cable extrusion at 150–190 °C onto stranded copper conductor with a 0.6–1.2 mm wall thickness; die land length and draw ratio must be adjusted because melt fracture at high filler loading creates surface defects. End product types are building wiring, appliance internal wiring, and conduit-insulated power supply cords for equipment where halogen-free construction is specified.
In hot melt adhesive compounding, metallocene ethylene–octene copolymers with densities below 0.905 g/cm³ are used as backbone polymers where low-temperature flexibility and adhesion to non-polar substrates are specified. Queo VLDPE 0201 is added at 5–25 wt% of the total adhesive formulation, typically in combination with 40–60 wt% C5 or hydrogenated hydrocarbon tackifier, 5–15 wt% microwax, and 0–10 wt% paraffinic oil. The low density of the resin promotes wetting on polyethylene and polypropylene packaging films, but the melt flow rate of 1.1 g/10 min (ISO 1133-1:2022) restricts its use to high-viscosity application systems unless blended with a higher-MFR polyolefin or oil. Viscosity at 180 °C is sufficiently high that gear pumps and heated slot-die coaters must maintain head pressure above 40 bar to avoid cavitation; production lines using heated transfer hoses shorter than 5 m have fewer pressure drops and less thermal degradation. Open time and set time are controlled by the wax-to-oil ratio, and cold adhesion is evaluated by T-peel at −20 °C according to ASTM D1876-08 on polyethylene film laps; elevated-temperature creep resistance is assessed by shear adhesion failure temperature according to ASTM D4498-07. Compliance for packaging adhesives falls under FDA 21 CFR 175.105 for indirect food contact and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006; if the adhesive contacts dry food, the migration limit of EU 10/2011 may require specific migration testing for the tackifier and oil rather than the polymer. The downstream process is continuous mixing in a heated Sigma-blade or rotor–stator mixer at 150–170 °C, followed by roller or slot-die coating onto case and carton stock at 177–190 °C. End product types are carton sealing, tray forming, case erecting, and label adhesives for PE squeeze tubes.
Masterbatch carriers for organic pigment and carbon black require freeze-flowing pellet hardness after pelletizing and must not react with the active ingredient. Queo VLDPE 0201 is used at 40–70 wt% of the masterbatch as the carrier phase; because of its low crystallinity, it permits higher pigment loading than conventional LDPE carriers before melt fracture occurs during die-face cutting. On a 44:1 co-rotating twin-screw extruder with a side screw feeder at 180–200 °C, the primary process constraint is pellet tackiness during water-bath solidification rather than dispersion quality; pellet agglomeration occurs if water temperature exceeds 25 °C, and underwater die-face pelletizers require water temperatures below 20 °C for stable cutting. The addition ratio in a colour masterbatch is typically 30–60 wt% active pigment/additive with Queo 0201 as the balance; the processing window narrows above 50 wt% organic pigment because screen-pack pressure rises steeply and pellet hardness drops. Compliance is demonstrated through the intended final article: masterbatch used in food-contact packaging must comply with EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I and FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, while colourants must meet the purity criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and, where applicable, EC No 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice. Published data for the screen-pack pressure profile of this specific grade at pigment levels above 50 wt% are limited; extrusion trials with a 120 µm screen pack are recommended to establish a plant-specific baseline. The downstream process includes twin-screw distributive mixing, side venting at −0.08 MPa, water-bath strand cooling at 15–25 °C, and air-knife drying before pelletizing; end product types are additive masterbatches for blown film, injection moulding, and extrusion coating lines.
At 20–60 wt% Queo VLDPE 0201 in LDPE-based chemically crosslinked foam sheet manufacture, the lower crystallinity of Queo 0201 broadens the processing window for gas expansion because the melt viscoelasticity remains lower than LDPE at the decomposition temperature of azodicarbonamide. The addition ratio is dependent on the required foam density and compression set; a typical formulation combines 20–40 wt% Queo 0201 with LDPE, 1.0–2.0 phr azodicarbonamide, and 0.5–1.2 phr dicumyl peroxide. Compression set at 23 °C and 50% compression is measured according to ISO 1856-1:2019, and apparent foam density is determined according to ISO 845:2006. Compliance for the final foam in automotive applications follows FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate and VDA 278 for volatile organic compound emissions; construction products may also require EN 13501-1 reaction-to-fire classification where the foam is exposed. The downstream process is continuous mixing on a two-roll mill or twin-screw at 100–120 °C, followed by calendering to sheet and hot-air tunnel crosslinking at 190–220 °C. A known operational boundary is gel content measured by xylene extraction according to ASTM D2765-18; if the peroxide addition is below 0.5 phr, low gel content produces foam collapse and skin pinholes before the sheet exits the crosslinking tunnel. Published exact gel fraction data for Queo 0201 in this specific peroxide system are limited; formulators should run a peroxide-response study with gel content per ASTM D2765-18 at 120 °C xylene for 8 h. End product types include automotive interior padding, appliance cushioning, and construction expansion joint fillers.
