Container Loading (20′ FCL) Borealis HDPE HE1973 loaded in a 20′ FCL: palletized bags, dry, clean container, properly secured, within payload limits.
Shipping Borealis HDPE HE1973 is a non-hazardous high-density polyethylene in pellet form. It is not regulated under DOT, IMDG, IATA, or ADR; no UN number, class, or packing group applies. Ship in sealed bags or bulk containers, protecting from moisture, heat, and contamination. Follow normal industrial handling.
Storage Store Borealis HDPE HE1973 in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat, and ignition sources. Keep original bags or containers closed, clean, and palletized to prevent moisture, dust, and contamination. Avoid contact with strong oxidizers and excessive stacking. Maintain ambient temperature and follow supplier SDS and local regulations. Do not expose to UV radiation or prolonged heat.
Shelf Life Borealis HDPE HE1973 shelf life is 24 months when stored in original, unopened packaging, dry, cool, ventilated, and protected from direct sunlight.
    Application of Borealis HDPE HE1973

In continuous shuttle extrusion blow moulding of 250 mL to 3 L trigger-spray, lotion and household chemical bottles, HE1973 is metered with a pigment-specific PE carrier masterbatch at 2.0 wt% to 4.0 wt%; regrind from flash and defective bottles is limited to 20 wt% to 30 wt% because higher levels correlate with increased top-load variation in oval containers stored at 40 °C and 50 % RH. The conversion line comprises a grooved-feed single-screw extruder with 24:1 L/D, a barrier screw with pineapple mixing section, barrel set points 180 °C to 210 °C, die head 195 °C to 210 °C, adjustable die gap 1.2 mm to 1.8 mm, mould temperature 12 °C to 25 °C, blow air pressure 6.5 bar to 9.0 bar, and cycle times of 8 s to 16 s depending on part weight. For non-food containers, heavy-metal compliance is verified under Directive 94/62/EC with total lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium not exceeding 100 mg/kg, and REACH Annex XVII restricted substance screening is applied to the masterbatch and final article; food-contact variants are validated under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 using overall migration protocols and simulant selection. Terminal articles include monolayer HDPE trigger-spray bottles, personal-care lotion bottles, laundry detergent bottles and matching shoulder/neck geometries; the controlling variables are parison hang strength, neck calibration and top-load retention after 24 h stacking at 40 °C.

Does UN Drop-Impact at -18 °C Expose Pinch-Off Weld Limitations When Regrind Exceeds 15 wt% in Agrochemical Jerrycans?

For accumulator-head extrusion blow moulding of 5 L to 25 L UN-rated agrochemical and industrial chemical jerrycans, HE1973 is processed with shot size 1.5 kg to 5.5 kg, radial parison programming that deposits additional wall thickness at the handle bridge and pinch-off, and barrel temperatures 190 °C to 215 °C. The pinch weld is the critical failure site under UN Manual of Tests and Criteria Part III, section 37 drop testing; the converter therefore runs mould temperature 8 °C to 20 °C and post-mould cooling to move the weld from hot-tear morphology to a co-crystallised front. Addition ratios are UV-stabiliser masterbatch 1.0 wt% to 2.5 wt%, colour masterbatch 1 wt% to 3 wt%, hydrophobic fumed silica anti-block at 0.05 wt% to 0.10 wt%, and regrind limited to 15 wt% to 25 wt%; when regrind exceeds 25 wt%, environmental stress crack resistance measured by ASTM D1693 in 10 % Igepal CO-630 declines at weld regions before sidewall regions. Compliance for the finished jerrycan is governed by ADR 6.1.5.3 for drop testing, ADR 6.1.5.4 for leakproofness and ADR 6.1.5.5 for hydrostatic pressure, with stacking tests under UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1; surface wetting agents may require additional permeation checks. Terminal products are UN-marked monolayer HDPE jerrycans for crop-protection emulsifiable concentrates, industrial cleaners and non-flammable liquid intermediates. Published data for HE1973 pre-compounded with specific pesticide emulsion systems is limited; converter-side compatibility testing remains mandatory.

In multi-cavity shuttle blow moulding of pharmaceutical solid-dose containers, neck-ring alignment and cooling-time variability determine dimensional consistency of 25 mm to 75 mm diameter finish threads. HE1973 is used without external PCR in most Drug Master File-listed packaging; post-industrial regrind from the same shift is allowed only up to 10 wt% when documented under USP <661.1> and the customer specification for torque retention. A PE-based white masterbatch is added at 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% to achieve opacity, and a low-dose process aid may be present at 0.05 wt% only if it does not affect the extraction profile. Production takes place on 8- to 12-cavity continuous extrusion shuttle machines with dedicated blow pins that calibrate the neck finish to maintain cap torque removal forces of 1.0 N·m to 2.0 N·m; barrel temperatures are held at 190 °C to 205 °C, die head 195 °C to 205 °C, mould coolant 10 °C to 20 °C, and parison drop time is programmed to avoid fold-over wrinkles in thin-walled body panels. Compliance includes Ph. Eur. 3.1.3 for polyolefin containers, USP <661.1> for plastic components, and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 when the finished bottle is used for oral solid-dose dispensing. Terminal parts are 25 cm³ to 500 cm³ HDPE tablet canisters, desiccant vials and cap-sealed nutraceutical bottles with child-resistant closure geometries.

Low-Organoleptic Carryover in 1 L Ambient-Fill Edible Oil and UHT Dairy Alternative Bottles

When HE1973 is converted into 500 mL to 2 L monolayer bottles for pasteurised milk, dairy alternatives and edible oil, the melt temperature is deliberately held in the lower quarter of the HDPE window, 185 °C to 200 °C, to reduce oxidative degradation products that contribute to off-taste. The extruder is a smooth-bore single-screw with 25:1 L/D and a low-shear metering zone; downstream tooling uses a converging die gap of 1.0 mm to 1.4 mm and dual-head calibrated blow pins for continuous parison. Addition ratio is limited to food-grade white masterbatch at 1.5 wt% to 2.5 wt% for opacification; recycled material is excluded unless the converter operates a closed-loop in-house regrind line with documented compliance under Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. Finished-article compliance includes overall migration testing under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and organoleptic sensory evaluation per ISO 13302. Terminal products are lightweight HDPE milk bottles, ambient-filled edible oil bottles and dairy alternative containers where cap torque retention is controlled by neck calibration to ±0.15 mm and sidewall thickness variation is held below 0.2 mm across the label panel.

Dry-blending of post-consumer recycled HDPE with virgin HE1973 at a PCR let-down of 30 wt% to 50 wt% is used for non-food home-care and automotive-care bottles; the virgin material restores melt strength and pinch-off integrity lost when low-viscosity PCR fractions dominate the recycle stream. PCR from wet flake washing lines must be pre-dried to 0.08 % moisture at 80 °C for 4 h to prevent splay. The production line is a twin-station continuous shuttle with gravimetric dosing of PCR on a loss-in-weight feeder, blending in the extruder hopper, screw L/D 30:1 with a vented barrel at -0.06 MPa vacuum to remove volatile residues, and melt filtration through a 120-mesh screen changer to protect the die gap. Additives: PE-based black or grey masterbatch at 2 wt%, anti-oxidant masterbatch at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt% to compensate for repeated heat history, and acid scavenger at 0.05 wt% to 0.10 wt%. Compliance for the resulting packaging is based on REACH Annex XVII, Directive 94/62/EC heavy-metal limits, and EN 15343 for recycled content traceability where a mass-balance certificate is used; the converter must also verify melt filtration pressure drop remains below the screen-changer alarm threshold to avoid resin stagnation. Terminal products are opaque dark-grey and black non-food bottles for laundry strips, automotive interior cleaners and barbecue grill cleaners; burst strength is verified by a top-load tester at 300 N to 450 N depending on bottle geometry.

If the Parison Length Exceeds 1.2 m in 1 000 L Composite IBC Inner Bottle Production

Accumulator-head conversion of 1 000 L composite IBC inner bottles subjects the parison to gravity-driven sag when shot mass exceeds 12 kg; HE1973 is therefore run with radial parison programming and a diverging die gap of 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm to maintain wall thickness of 3.0 mm to 5.0 mm over parison lengths beyond 1.2 m. The blow moulder is a high-output accumulator-head machine with 12 kg to 25 kg shot capacity, internal needle blow air at 8 bar to 12 bar, mould temperature 10 °C to 18 °C, and post-mould cooling fixtures that maintain bottom sump dimensions. Addition ratios are carbon black UV masterbatch 1.5 wt% to 2.5 wt%, hindered amine light stabiliser masterbatch 0.8 wt% to 1.2 wt%, and same-resin regrind 20 wt% to 35 wt%; regrind above 35 wt% increases die-head pressure fluctuation because the lower viscosity of heat-aged resin disrupts the programmed parison geometry. Compliance is tied to UN composite IBC design-type approval under UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.5 and ADR 6.5.2, with stacking, drop and leakproofness tests performed on the composite assembly; the inner bottle itself is leak tested at 20 kPa to 30 kPa. Terminal products are monolayer HDPE inner bottles for 1 000 L composite IBCs used in non-flammable liquids, water-treatment chemicals and food-processing intermediates where the inner bottle is replaced after multiple filling cycles.
