Borealis Borstar ME2440 is assigned an MRS 8.0 MPa classification under ISO 12162 from long-term hydrostatic testing per ISO 9080, which positions the compound for municipal potable water mains where slow crack growth resistance in buried service is the controlling lifetime parameter. The nominal density of 0.940 g/cm³ is measured per ISO 1183-1, and the melt flow rate is typically maintained at 0.85 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1 condition 190 °C/5 kg. In potable water pipe extrusion, the bimodal molecular weight distribution creates a narrower melt temperature processing window than unimodal MDPE: below 190 °C, carbon black agglomerates in the black compound may remain undispersed and produce surface specks; above 220 °C, the antioxidant package is consumed faster and oxidation-induced carbonyl absorption increases. The compound is therefore processed on grooved-feed single-screw extruders with L/D 30:1 to 36:1 and barrier or Maddock mixing elements to maintain a die melt temperature of 190–220 °C. Vacuum calibration is performed with chilled water at 15–20 °C to fix wall thickness and inner diameter before haul-off; thick-walled pipe above SDR 11 requires additional internal cooling to prevent sag-induced eccentricity. Pipe dimensions and pressure classes are set according to EN 12201-2 and ISO 4427-2, with carbon black content controlled at 2.0–2.5 wt% and dispersion assessed per ISO 18553. Batch release includes oxidation induction time per ISO 11357-6, hydrostatic testing at 20 °C and 80 °C per ISO 1167, and tensile elongation per ISO 6259-1. The finished product exits as coils from 25 m to 150 m in small diameters and as straight lengths in larger diameters, used for buried water distribution laterals, service connections, and submains.
Gas distribution networks impose a different failure regime: rapid crack propagation and slow crack growth at lower soil temperatures must be controlled by resin architecture and jointing discipline. Pipe made from Borealis Borstar ME2440 is designated under EN 1555-2 and ISO 4437-2 as PE80 solid-wall pipe. The gas-specific design coefficient produces lower permitted pressure than water service at the same SDR; operating pressures typically remain below 1.0 MPa and are governed by national annexes. Butt fusion parameters are set by ISO 21307:2017 single low-pressure or dual low-pressure procedures, with plate surface temperature verified at 210–230 °C using a pyrometer, not the machine dial. The critical process conflict is cold-weather installation: at ambient temperatures below 5 °C, the cooling rate after bead formation increases crystallinity in the weld zone and can lower slow crack resistance. Fusion operators are required to shelter the joint and extend cooling time in accordance with ISO 21307:2017. Field acceptance is based on bead geometry and visual criteria, not destructive testing of every joint. Rapid crack propagation resistance is assessed under ISO 13477, and slow crack growth resistance under ISO 13479. Terminal pipe products are gas service lines and distribution mains, usually coiled for diameters up to 110 mm and straight lengths for larger diameters. The compound must resist synthetic odorants such as tetrahydrothiophene; system requirements in EN 12007 and national utility specifications cover odorant resistance and joint tightness. Off-spec fusion can occur if the plate surface is contaminated with polymer residues; operators mitigate this by cleaning with non-woven abrasive cloth and isopropanol between joints.
Industrial process water and treated effluent transfer lines use Borealis Borstar ME2440 in solid-wall PE80 pipe where the fluid temperature remains below 40 °C and abrasive solids are present in low concentration. The governing installation standard is ISO 15494, which requires pressure-temperature derating above 20 °C using the derating factors in ISO 13760. Unlike potable water service, industrial effluents can contain residual oxidising agents; continuous exposure to sodium hypochlorite above 5 mg/L free chlorine at elevated temperature can accelerate oxidative embrittlement and should be evaluated by immersion testing with the specific effluent under simulated service conditions. Extrusion for industrial pipe requires laser or ultrasonic wall thickness monitoring at line speed, because the specifier may require tighter wall tolerances than municipal water. The bimodal molar-mass distribution of the resin supports coiling of SDR 11 pipe without kinking, which is critical for plant retrofits where welded straight sections cannot be threaded through existing utility corridors. Final products include plant cooling-water loops, wash-down headers, and treated effluent transfer mains, generally supplied as coils from 50 m to 200 m in small diameters or straight lengths up to 6 m for large diameters. Jointing is performed by butt fusion for permanent buried segments and by flange adapters for equipment tie-ins; hydrostatic test acceptance follows ISO 15494 with test pressure of 1.5× design pressure.
Pressurised irrigation lines are subjected to cyclic pressure surges on pump start and stop, so wall thickness is selected from the maximum surge pressure rather than static operating head. Borealis Borstar ME2440 pipe is manufactured to ISO 4427-2 and local agricultural water practice; wall thickness calculations use the PE80 design stress with an allowance for recurring surge events. In high-speed extrusion of small-diameter irrigation laterals, line speeds can exceed 25 m/min; the die land shear rate is then high enough to approach the onset of melt fracture in unimodal materials. The bimodal molecular weight distribution of this grade maintains a smooth extrudate surface under these conditions, but die exit temperature must remain below 220 °C to avoid micro-cracks in the melt that are detectable as surface roughness in the finished coil. Wall thickness must be uniform because laterals are later drilled or fitted with drip emitters; eccentricity beyond the EN 12201-2 tolerance creates leak points under field installation. The final product is coiled pipe from 100 m to 400 m for emitter lines and straight lengths for buried submains. Mechanical compression fittings dominate surface installations; buried mains are butt-fused.
Closed-loop ground-source heat exchange circuits are a smaller but technically demanding application for MDPE pressure pipe. Borealis Borstar ME2440 can be used for buried circulation loops where the fluid temperature does not exceed 30–35 °C at the return header. Published long-term hydrostatic data specific to this configuration are limited; system designers typically apply the temperature derating principles of ISO 13760 and limit design stress below the PE80 value used at 20 °C. The pipe is extruded in small-diameter coils and is installed as U-bend circuits in vertical boreholes or horizontal trenches. Inspection focuses on wall thickness consistency and absence of carbon black agglomerates at the weld line; a single agglomerate can create a stress concentration in the tight U-bend during back-grouting. The finished product is a buried closed-loop circuit with butt-fused U-bend elbows and no mechanical joints below ground.
