BorSafe ME1244 is received at the pipe plant as fully compounded pellets containing a dispersed carbon black package. The material is classified as PE80 under ISO 12162:2009 and is intended for gaseous fuel distribution piping according to ISO 4437-1:2014 and EN 1555-1:2021. In extrusion, it is fed to a single-screw extruder with a grooved feed section and a barrier screw, preferably with an L/D ratio of not less than 30:1. A low-shear barrier screw is selected to avoid excessive melt temperature rise; the melt temperature at the adapter should be maintained between 190°C and 220°C, and the compound should not be held above 240°C for more than a few minutes because the antioxidant package oxidises rapidly and the oxidation induction time can fall below the floor required by ISO 4437-1:2014. Barrel profiles are typically set at 180–190°C in the feed section, 200–210°C in the compression section, 210–220°C in the metering section, and 210–220°C at the adapter and die. Pellets are normally moisture-tolerant, but carbon black can adsorb surface moisture when stored in humid or poorly sealed silos; if relative humidity exceeds 60% or condensation is present, pre-drying at 75–80°C for 1–2 h in a desiccant air dryer is required to eliminate melt defects and die-lip deposits. Pipe is produced by vacuum sizing and water spray cooling, with wall thickness determined by the SDR system. For a 63 mm outside-diameter SDR 11 service line, the minimum wall thickness is 5.73 mm; for a 110 mm outside-diameter SDR 17.6 main, the minimum wall thickness is 6.25 mm. The long-term hydrostatic strength is designated as MRS 8.0 MPa. Maximum operating pressure is calculated as MOP = (2 × MRS)/(C × (SDR − 1)), where the design coefficient C is 2.0 for gas. This yields 0.80 MPa (8.0 bar) for SDR 11 and 0.50 MPa (5.0 bar) for SDR 17.6 at the 20°C reference temperature. Extruded pipe must be marked with the nominal outside diameter, wall thickness or SDR, material designation PE80, the reference standard, production date, and traceability code as specified in EN 1555-1 clause 11. BorSafe ME1244 is not a potable-water-approved grade; pipes intended for drinking water service should use a grade approved for the relevant national drinking water standards.

Electrofusion joining of BorSafe ME1244 pipe relies on a fitting-specific time–current programme that melts the interface around an embedded resistance wire, but the process is less forgiving of surface oxidation than butt fusion. The pipe end inserted into the coupler is mechanically scraped to remove an oxide layer of approximately 0.1–0.2 mm; scraping must be uniform and completed immediately before assembly because re-oxidation and skin contamination can produce low-strength interfacial zones. Assembly clamps control ovality and angular misalignment, and the acceptable ovality for electrofusion on small-diameter PE pipe is generally held below 1.5% of outside diameter; residual coil curvature should be removed before fitting insertion. The pipe and fitting interface must remain dry and above the minimum jointing temperature specified by the fitting producer, typically not below 5°C. During energisation, the melt pressure generated around the wire must not exceed the fitting’s core containment capacity; gaps or ovality greater than the fitting’s cold-fit clearance create wire displacement and voids. Butt fusion, by contrast, creates a homogeneous melt interface through melt bead displacement and requires only that pipe ends are cleaned and planed; however, butt-fusion joint strength is sensitive to heater surface temperature, usually 210–220°C, and interfacial pressure of approximately 0.15 MPa during bead-up and fusion stages per ISO 12176-1:2017. For BorSafe ME1244 field pipe networks, electrofusion is preferred on repairs and service saddles where butt fusion machines cannot operate, but published data for this specific compound’s electrofusion weld strength under contaminated-field conditions is limited; qualification should follow ISO 12176-2:2008 and the fitting manufacturer’s approved procedure.
On coiled gas service line deployments, BorSafe ME1244 pipe is produced and wound onto reels at the extrusion plant, then transported to the trench as a continuous length rather than as stick pipe. The material’s MDPE flexural modulus, approximately 700 MPa according to ISO 178, permits coiling of smaller outside diameters without stress whitening when the minimum bend radius is not less than 20 times the outside diameter. For SDR 11 service pipe up to 63 mm outside diameter, this corresponds to a minimum reel hub diameter of about 1.26 m. Coiled pipe retains residual stresses from winding; when uncoiled at low temperatures, the pipe may spring and require restraint until pulled into the trench. The continuous coil format reduces the number of butt-fusion joints in the buried segment, which is directly relevant for gas service laterals operating at pressures up to 4 bar MOP. Coil insertion into existing cast iron or steel mains is used for sliplining bell-and-spigot networks; in this configuration, the annular space is not typically grouted for gas service, and the protective external carbon black content provides ultraviolet resistance during above-ground storage but does not eliminate the need for sand-bed compaction and cover depth compliance per EN 12007-2. The pipe also must be protected from sharp edges and thrust blocks at the insertion point, since axial scratches introduced during sliplining can act as slow crack growth initiation sites.
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) installation imposes axial tensile pullback forces, radial external pressure from borehole fluid, and bending along the reamed path, all of which are distinct from direct-bury service loads. For PE80 pipe made from BorSafe ME1244, the wall section must be checked against the allowable tensile stress during pullback, commonly limited to 10 MPa at the design installation temperature, and against the short-term tensile yield and long-term creep modulus used in ASTM F1962-20 calculations. The bore path curvature is converted into a bending strain limit; PE pipe is generally limited to 2% axial strain during pullback, which for a 63 mm outside-diameter pipe produces a minimum bend radius of approximately 1.6 m. Collapse resistance under external drilling-fluid head requires separate verification because MDPE has a lower modulus than HDPE; if the depth below the water table creates an external pressure exceeding the pipe’s short-term collapse resistance, a thicker SDR 11 wall or an SDR 9 pipe may be required. The spiral-wound or axial scratches produced by pullback through cobble or rock must not exceed 10% of wall thickness, and any damaged segment must be cut out and replaced before fusion to the pipeline. Published data for ME1244-specific HDD pull force and reamer sizing is limited; installation contractors therefore rely on the pipe manufacturer’s safe pull force tables or destructively test fused test loops before the production pull.
For low-pressure gas gathering applications in landfill and biogas facilities, BorSafe ME1244 pipe is exposed to a gas phase containing methane, carbon dioxide, water vapour, and trace sulphur compounds. Medium-density polyethylene displays broad chemical resistance to dilute acids and alkalis, but biogas condensate may contain aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons that plasticize polyethylene and reduce long-term stiffness. System designers therefore apply the appropriate design factor for the condensate-generating zone and avoid continuous exposure above 40°C; operation at higher temperatures requires Miner’s-rule de-rating according to ISO 13760:1998. Landfill gas collection headers are typically operated under vacuum or low positive pressure below 150 mbar, so the mechanical design is governed by external earth loads and settlement-induced longitudinal bending rather than internal pressure. Butt-fused joints are preferred over mechanical couplings in gas-carrying lines; electrofusion saddles are used for service connections to vertical extraction wells. Carbon black loading in the compound provides ultraviolet protection for above-ground header sections, but the pipe should not be used with concentrated oxidising acids or at temperatures where permeation rates accelerate. Although the base matrix is suitable for many low-pressure gas streams, site-specific chemical resistance testing of condensate is required because published data for long-term exposure of BorSafe ME1244 to landfill gas condensate is limited.
Long-term pipe integrity for BorSafe ME1244 is controlled primarily by resistance to slow crack growth, which is assessed on notched pipes at 80°C under a hoop stress of 4.0 MPa according to ISO 13479. Carbon black dispersion in the compound is not an inert filler; poorly dispersed agglomerates create local stress concentrations and reduce slow crack growth resistance, while ultraviolet stabilisation requires a uniform particle distribution with carbon black content in the range 2.0–2.5% by mass per ISO 6964. In pipeline construction, slow crack growth resistance is undermined by point loads from angular backfill, rock impingement, and deep scratch damage. Bedding and backfill practice therefore requires a sand embedment layer, with material finer than 20 mm in the pipe zone, and removal of stones with sharp edges from the trench bottom and haunches as specified in the installation requirements of EN 12007-2 for gas supply systems. If the pipe is installed in ground subject to differential settlement or heavy vehicular loading, a soil-structure interaction check is required; for MDPE gas pipe under shallow cover, the cover depth, trench width, and pipe bedding modulus define the deflection limit. Field-proven data on this specific compound’s point-load failure times under rock impingement is limited, so project specifications should impose a minimum depth of cover and, where rock ground is unavoidable, import screened sand or use protective slabs.
Published data for injection moulding of BorSafe ME1244 is limited; the compound is extruded as pipe, and its melt viscosity is high relative to fitting-grade MDPE. If an attempt is made to injection mould small or thin-wall gas fittings, the melt faces long flow paths and may require injection pressures and temperatures near the upper end of the polyethylene processing window, but the material has not been optimised for mould filling, gate freeze, or ejection. Fittings for gas distribution systems should be manufactured from a fitting-grade PE80 compound conforming to ISO 4437-3:2014 and the relevant clauses of EN 1555-3:2021. Pipe compound regrind from BorSafe ME1244 may be reintroduced into the same pipe product if its source is clean, its thermal history is controlled, and the final pipe continues to satisfy the compound classification and hydrostatic strength requirements; unidentified recycled material must not be blended into gas pipe compound. When regrind is used, oxidative induction time, melt flow rate, and carbon black dispersion should be verified at a defined frequency to protect long-term hydrostatic strength.
