Application of Borealis BorPEX PE-Xc ME2592

BorPEX PE-Xc ME2592 enters potable hot and cold water pipe production as the sole polymeric phase; downstream converters do not add silane or peroxide masterbatches because the grade is formulated for electron-beam crosslinking after extrusion, not for chemical grafting. A representative start-up formulation is 100 parts by mass of ME2592 with a blue or red polyolefin colour concentrate metered at 1.5–3.0 wt% for ASTM F876-22 colour-coded tubing, or a carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt% where UV resistance is required for exposed risers. The extrusion line is normally a single-screw machine with a grooved feed section, L/D 28–33, and a barrier or Maddock mixing screw. Melt temperature is held in the 180–210 °C band; exceeding 210 °C during sustained runs leads to surface oxidation that appears after irradiation as microcracking on the pipe inner wall. Vacuum calibration tanks with plate or sleeve calibrators set the outer diameter and ovality before the pipe enters an electron-beam accelerator with electron energy in the 1.0–2.5 MeV range, the energy selected so that the depth-dose distribution is flat through the wall thickness. Irradiation dose is adjusted by line speed and beam current to achieve a gel fraction above the minimum specified in ISO 10147:2011, while avoiding excess chain scission that would depress tensile elongation at break below the limits of ISO 15875-2:2003. Compliance for potable use rests on ISO 15875-2:2003 for material and dimensional properties, ASTM F876-22 for PEX tubing, and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61-2022 for extraction of contaminants into drinking water; long-term hydrostatic strength is validated by ISO 1167-1:2006. The terminal product is a single-layer PE-Xc tube in nominal sizes from 12 mm to 32 mm, supplied in coils or straight lengths for hot and cold domestic distribution.

Because hot chlorinated potable water is the primary chemical ageing environment, ASTM F2023-17 is applied to benchmark oxidative resistance in chlorinated water at 60 °C to 80 °C; extruder trials on production-scale lines show that gel fraction measured by ISO 10147:2011 is not sufficient by itself, because the inner-wall stabiliser profile and the absence of unreacted peroxide determine failure mode in the oxidative-induction-time test. Batch-to-batch variation in melt flow ratio is monitored because it shifts extrusion pressure at constant screw speed; if the melt flow rate moves outside the supplier’s specification, the dose-to-gel fraction relationship must be revalidated. The irradiator boundary is set by the dose window between gel formation and chain scission. Under-irradiation produces low gel fraction and premature creep failure in hot-water service, while over-irradiation creates a brittle inner layer that fails burst testing before the hydrostatic design basis is reached. Colour masterbatch qualification therefore includes post-irradiation gel fraction and elongation-at-break screening; published data for specific pigment-resin interactions in this configuration is limited, so converters qualify each colour concentrate on their own accelerator before release.

Why Is an EVOH Barrier Inserted Into Radiant Floor Circuits Made From PE-Xc?

For radiant heating and cooling circuits, the primary long-term failure vector is oxygen diffusion from the surrounding slab environment into the closed hydronic loop, where dissolved oxygen accelerates corrosion of steel manifolds, plates, and heat exchangers. The pipe structure is a five-layer coextrusion: inner PE-Xc layer at 100 parts ME2592, tie resin, EVOH oxygen barrier, tie resin, and outer PE-Xc layer at 100 parts ME2592; the EVOH and tie layers are not formulated from this resin. The ME2592-derived fraction of the multilayer wall typically exceeds 90 wt%, while the EVOH barrier is applied at the minimum thickness required to meet DIN 4726:2017 oxygen permeation limits of 0.1 g/m³·d at 40 °C. Production is carried out on coextrusion lines with separate extruders for the EVOH and tie layers; the main PE-Xc extruder uses grooved feed and L/D 28–33, while the EVOH extruder is kept at the lowest workable melt temperature to avoid barrier discolouration and gel build-up in the die. Vacuum calibration follows the multi-manifold die, and the complete pipe is then passed through the electron-beam accelerator; because the barrier layer is inside the wall during irradiation, the dose is validated by barrier continuity testing and outer-layer gel fraction rather than by monitoring accelerator settings alone. The governing documents are EN 1264-4:2021 for floor heating systems, ISO 11855-4:2021 for embedded surface heating and cooling, and DIN 4726:2017 for oxygen diffusion barrier requirements. The terminal product is a multilayer PE-Xc/EVOH/PE-Xc tube in diameters from 12 mm to 25 mm, supplied for screed systems and dry installation plates.

Residential Fire Sprinkler Loops Under NFPA 13D

Residential fire protection piping made from PE-Xc is governed less by continuous high-temperature exposure than by long-term hydronic pressure retention in stagnant, non-flowing water. The formulation uses 100 parts ME2592 with a red or orange polyolefin masterbatch metered at 1.0–2.0 wt%; no flame-retardant additive is used because the PEX pipe is not a structural fire-resisting element and is installed behind or within the building fabric. Extrusion covers nominal diameters of 19 mm to 25 mm, with vacuum sizing and electron-beam crosslinking followed by hydrostatic burst and sustained pressure testing under ASTM F876-22 and ASTM F877-20. The installation framework is NFPA 13D:2022, which requires that multipurpose and standalone residential fire sprinkler systems be hydraulically calculated and that the pipe remain protected by the dwelling’s thermal boundary; this is a compliance boundary separate from the material itself. On production lines, pigment masterbatch changes are a recognised variable because inorganic pigments can interact with the electron beam and shift the local dose-to-gel-fraction response; converters revalidate gel fraction and burst pressure after any lot change. The terminal product is red or orange PE-Xc piping for multipurpose residential fire sprinkler loops or dedicated life-safety lines in single-family and low-rise residential buildings.

Closed-loop chilled water circuits place a different demand on crosslinked pipe than domestic hot water: the inner wall remains below the dew point of the installation space for long periods, so the key durability variable is not high-temperature creep but condensation-driven external corrosion on metal accessories and micro-biological filming on surfaces not accessible for maintenance. In this service, ME2592 is used at 100 parts with a carbon black or blue masterbatch dosed at 2.0–2.5 wt%, and no chemical crosslinking co-agent is introduced; the pipe is crosslinked exclusively by the electron beam. The production sequence follows single-screw extrusion with L/D 28–33, vacuum calibration, and beam irradiation, but the target roundness and wall-thickness tolerances are tightened for fittings compatibility with compression and press connections. Because chilled water can produce sustained external wetting, the resin’s low moisture absorption is combined with external insulation; terminal products are pre-insulated PE-Xc service lines and risers in nominal sizes from 16 mm to 63 mm for fan coil units, chilled beams, and air-handling plant. The governing documents are ISO 15875-2:2003 for material and dimensional performance, ASTM F876-22 for tubing, and energy performance standards such as ASHRAE 90.1 for the distribution loop. Published data for this specific chilled-water configuration is limited in the open literature, so system designers rely on the pipe supplier’s long-term hydrostatic regression curves rather than accelerated chlorine ageing data.

When Snow-Melt Circuits Are Embedded in Concrete Slabs

Snow-melt circuits are installed under concentrated construction traffic and are exposed to water-glycol mixtures, so the pipe wall is required to maintain oxygen barrier integrity after concrete placement and site handling. The inner and outer PE-Xc layers are formulated with 100 parts ME2592; the central EVOH barrier and tie layers are coextruded to maintain oxygen permeation below 0.1 g/m³·d at 40 °C under DIN 4726:2017. Pipe diameters for snow-melt loops are typically 16 mm to 25 mm, embedded at 150–300 mm spacing in concrete slabs, where the pipe is pressure-tested before and after the pour. Production follows the same coextrusion and post-irradiation sequence used for radiant barrier pipe, but additional ovality and wall-thickness checks are applied because concrete placement imposes point loads that can exceed the loads encountered in covered floor heating. Compliance references ISO 15875-2:2003, ASTM F876-22, and DIN 4726:2017; system-level requirements are governed by the applicable hydronic heating design standards and installation codes. The terminal product is oxygen-barrier PE-Xc loop piping for embedded snow and ice melting systems in ramps, loading bays, walkways, and residential driveways.
