Application of Borealis BorPEX PE-Xb HE2515

For cold- and hot-water plumbing pipe converted on single-screw lines with 24:1–30:1 L/D screws and vacuum-sizing calibrators, Borealis BorPEX PE-Xb HE2515 is processed as a moisture-curable silane-grafted polyethylene in which vinyltrimethoxysilane side groups and a condensation catalyst are co-distributed in the pellet. Moisture must be excluded from storage and conveying; pellet hoppers are maintained under dry-air purge with dew point below −30 °C, and floor exposure above 60% relative humidity for more than 1 h may require desiccant drying at 60 °C for 2 h to avoid surface hydrolysis gel particles. The extrusion profile is controlled from 160 °C in the feed zone to 200–210 °C at the die, and the melt temperature is kept below 220 °C because higher residence temperatures initiate premature condensation and form visible gels in the melt filter pack. Mean residence time above 200 °C is kept below 5 min. Vacuum calibration is run at 20–30 °C in the first tank, and the pipe is then passed through a hot-water or steam tunnel at 80–95 °C to accelerate crosslinking; a 16 mm × 2.0 mm SDR 8 pipe normally requires 2–4 h at elevated humidity to reach a solvent-extraction gel content of at least 65% when tested per ISO 10147. For cold- and hot-water service, the converted pipe must meet the dimensional and hydrostatic requirements of ISO 15875-2, with sustained-pressure tests at 20 °C/1.5×PN/1 h and 95 °C/6 bar/1000 h. Potable-water contact certification is separately required under NSF/ANSI 61, BS 6920-2.4, or national equivalents such as AS/NZS 4020, and the organoleptic limit is evaluated by migration panels rather than by resin suppliers. End products are 12–63 mm OD plumbing risers, radiator connection tails, and hot/cold distribution lines assembled with metallic compression, crimp, or press fittings; cold-expansion fittings are not preferred for PE-Xb because the lower thermal memory and elastic recovery relative to PE-Xa make expansion retention less reproducible.

What Limits High-Temperature Creep Resistance in Oxygen-Barrier Radiant Heating Pipe?

Continuous underfloor heating circuits operate at design temperatures of 40–50 °C and 6 bar, but the pipe is exposed to short-term 95 °C peaks when control valves fail. The limiting property is not crosslink density alone but oxygen-barrier layer adhesion after repeated thermal cycles. In five-layer pipe, HE2515 forms the inner and outer PE-Xb layers around an EVOH core, with maleic-anhydride-grafted polyethylene tie layers between each functional layer. The EVOH layer is 0.05–0.15 mm thick, the tie layers 0.04–0.08 mm thick, and the outer PE-Xb layers are adjusted to meet 2.0 mm wall for SDR 8. Co-extrusion requires a die land length of at least 6 mm and a die gap of 1.8–2.2 mm to keep interfacial velocities below the instability threshold; viscosity mismatch at 210 °C across the EVOH and silane-grafted PE must stay within a 1.2:1 shear-viscosity ratio. On production lines with 60 mm diameter 33:1 L/D co-extruders, barrier-layer thickness oscillation appears when EVOH moisture exceeds 0.35 wt%, so the EVOH dryer is run at a −55 °C dew point and the regrind fraction is restricted below 5 wt% because crosslinked EVOH domains remain discrete and initiate stress concentrations in the PE-Xb outer layer. Crosslinking after co-extrusion is slowed by the EVOH moisture barrier; converters therefore circulate 85–95 °C water through the pipe lumen or use saturated steam at 0.2–0.4 bar for 4–6 h, then measure gel content separately on the inner and outer PE-Xb layers per ISO 10147, with acceptance above 65%. The oxygen permeability of the finished pipe is required to remain below 0.1 g/m³·d at 40 °C under DIN 4726, and the pipe must satisfy the ISO 15875-2 hydrostatic pressure and EN 1264-4 floor-heating system design calculations. Terminal products are manifold-connected floor loops, low-temperature heat pump distribution circuits, and wall or ceiling radiant panels, installed with crimp-sleeve or press fittings.

Aluminium butt-welded PEX-Al-PEX laminates require lower draw-down ratios than all-polymer pipe.

Five-layer pipe converting runs on 33:1 L/D coextruders with vacuum calibration and post-forming hot-water crosslinking. In aluminium multilayer pipe, HE2515 serves as the inner and outer PE-Xb layers fused to a 0.2–0.8 mm aluminium tube through maleic-anhydride-grafted PE tie layers. The aluminium layer changes the thermal profile because its high conductivity quenches the molten silane-grafted PE at the interface, producing a denser crystalline skin; draw-down ratios are therefore limited to 1.1–1.4 to prevent residual stress and micro-voids at the tie-layer interface. The inner pipe is extruded first, passed through a precision sizing sleeve, cooled and dried, then fed into a butt-welding or laser-welding station for the aluminium tube; the tie layer and outer HE2515 layer are co-extruded over the metal tube at 200–210 °C, with induction preheating of the aluminium strip to 60–100 °C to stabilize adhesion. The silane-grafted PE layers crosslink after final shaping, but the aluminium layer acts as a moisture barrier, so through-wall crosslinking takes longer than for solid PE-Xb pipe; routine production uses 80–95 °C water or 0.3 bar steam for 4–8 h depending on OD. Peel strength of the tie-metal interface is verified per ISO 17454 and must meet the minimum value set in ISO 21003-3, while long-term hydrostatic resistance is assessed under ISO 21003-5. The finished PEX-Al-PEX pipe is used for radiator connections, risers, compressed air distribution, and concealed plumbing where low linear thermal expansion and self-supporting shape retention are needed.

Flexible pre-insulated district heating systems operating at 80 °C supply temperature and 6 bar service pressure use PE-Xb carrier pipe because the silane crosslink structure retains creep resistance at continuous elevated temperature under soil load. The carrier pipe is extruded from HE2515 in 25–160 mm OD dimensions, crosslinked in hot water, coiled, and then fed into a polyurethane foam insulation line with a corrugated HDPE jacket. Surface preparation before foam injection is the critical operation: the PE-Xb surface is corona-treated to raise surface energy above 40 mN/m, and the polyurethane system is selected to minimize exotherm above 140 °C so the silane-grafted inner wall does not post-cure unevenly. The completed flexible line is tested for axial shear strength under EN 15632-1 and thermal performance under EN 15632-2; carrier pipe hydrostatic qualification remains ISO 15875-2. End-products include single and twin carrier pipe assemblies for district heating substations, buried distribution laterals, and low-temperature industrial waste-heat recovery loops.

When municipal water service laterals are installed by horizontal directional drilling

In North American municipal water service laterals, PE-Xb pipe is pulled through directionally drilled bores where tensile loads, soil friction, and chlorine residual coexist in the same installation. HE2515 pipe is specified in SDR 9 dimensions from 13 mm to 51 mm OD under ASTM F876 and AWWA C904; the pipe is coiled, pulled with a cable grip, and joined with stainless-steel stiffener compression fittings. The drilling lubricant is a process variable that is often overlooked: only non-petroleum, water-based drag fluids are compatible with the polyethylene surface, because hydrocarbon-based lubricants can plasticize the pipe wall and reduce long-term hydrostatic strength. Residual chlorine performance is validated under ASTM F2023 using flowing 4 ppm free chlorine at elevated temperature, with acceptance criteria tied to the AWWA C904 service class; pipe extracted after laboratory validation shows no brittle crack initiation in the pressure-bearing wall. Pulling force on 25 mm SDR 9 PE-Xb should not exceed the manufacturer’s allowable tensile load, which is calculated from the minimum wall area and an allowable short-term pull stress of 8 MPa or less, not from the full bell-end diameter. The terminal product is a buried water service lateral from main to meter, connected with compression or pack-joint adapters, while tracer wire and metallic locating tape are field-attached because the crosslinked pipe itself cannot be electrofused or hot-air welded.

For demineralized water loops in pharmaceutical and food plants, silane-crosslinked HDPE plumbing avoids metal ion contamination, but after crosslinking the pipe cannot be fusion-bonded; all line tie-ins, instrumentation ports, and transitions use flanged, grooved, or mechanical compression connections. Wet-chemical compatibility is limited to aqueous salts, dilute acids, and dilute alkalis; strong oxidizers, aromatic solvents, and chlorinated hydrocarbons must be excluded.

Residential fire sprinkler retrofit and the NFPA 13D multipurpose piping constraint

The dominant constraint in residential multipurpose sprinkler systems is that the same pipe simultaneously supplies domestic water and suppresses fire, so long-term hydraulic capacity and biological regrowth potential are design inputs rather than separate performance features. HE2515 pipe is used in 16–25 mm OD branches listed for NFPA 13D residential systems, with third-party listing under UL 1821 or an equivalent fire-protection listing program; the compound must remain dimensionally stable after long-term exposure to potable water at domestic temperatures and after intermittent pressure spikes from municipal supply. The pipe cannot be installed where ambient temperatures exceed 93 °C or where the sprinkler system is required to meet NFPA 13 commercial criteria, because the silane-crosslinked PE matrix softens progressively above 90 °C. Installation practice requires metal pipe straps spaced at 1 m or less, siliconized polymer sealants only, and no solvent-based pipe dope, because solvent attack can reduce the effective wall thickness at threaded transition fittings. The compliance matrix for HE2515 across downstream pipe markets is summarized below.
