In potable water installations, the design basis for Borealis BorPEX PE-Xa HE2550 is governed by long-term hydrostatic creep rather than short-term tensile yield. The compound is processed as a ready-to-crosslink stock; die entry melt temperature is maintained between 190 °C and 205 °C because the organic peroxide half-life falls to 0.1 min near 198 °C. On single-screw extruders with L/D ≥ 28:1 and compression ratio 3.0:1–3.5:1, barrel temperatures are set from 170 °C at the feed throat to 200 °C at the metering zone, with a screen pack of 60/80/100 mesh. Pressure drop across the pack should not exceed 25 MPa. Pre-drying in a desiccant hopper at 80 °C for 4 h is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, because moisture above 0.015% generates microvoids when peroxide decomposition products are released. The die back pressure is maintained above 10 MPa because volatile peroxide decomposition products must remain dissolved in the melt; below this threshold surface pitting appears at the die exit. Gel content after crosslinking is determined by solvent extraction according to ISO 10147; the minimum accepted value for PE-Xa service is 70%. The formed pipe is quenched in water at 15–25 °C. Compliance for potable water systems is assessed under ISO 15875-2 for dimensions, ASTM F876 and ASTM F877 for material and plumbing tubing, and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for drinking water contact. Chlorinated water resistance is evaluated under ASTM F2023 at 60 °C, 4 mg/L free chlorine, and 0.31 MPa hoop stress; published data for HE2550-specific failure time in this test is limited, so validation is performed on the finished pipe rather than the raw compound. The compound is not recommended for continuous service above 82 °C at 0.6 MPa or for prolonged exposure to free chlorine concentrations above 4 mg/L at elevated temperature.

The production of five-layer oxygen-barrier pipe for radiant floor heating places the crosslinking reaction in direct contact with a moisture-sensitive EVOH core. A typical wall structure consists of PE-Xa / maleic anhydride grafted tie / EVOH / tie / PE-Xa, with EVOH thickness of 0.10–0.15 mm and total wall thickness of 2.0–2.5 mm for 16 mm to 20 mm tubing. The outer and inner PE-Xa layers are run at 190–205 °C melt temperature, while the EVOH layer is held at 210–230 °C. The tie layer is processed at 200–220 °C to balance viscosity curves between the nonpolar PEX and polar EVOH. Melt flow mismatch at the die entry creates interfacial shear stress; when shear rate exceeds 1000 s-1, wave distortion appears at the tie/EVOH interface. Production lines therefore use co-extrusion feedblocks with streamlined channel geometry and no dead spots. EVOH must be dried to below 0.3% moisture before extrusion; hydrolysis generates cross-linked gel particles that cause pinholes in the barrier layer. Oxygen permeability is tested according to DIN 4726; the barrier requirement is below 0.1 g/(m³·d) at 40 °C. A 10 µm pinhole in EVOH can raise oxygen ingress locally by several orders of magnitude. In radiant circuits, the design water velocity is limited to 0.5–0.8 m/s and supply temperature to 45–60 °C; pressure drop typically remains below 20 kPa per 100 m. Crosslink density for this application should remain in the 70–80% gel range; higher gel content above 90% reduces elastic recovery and impairs cold-expansion fitting performance.
| Layer | Function | Thickness | Melt temperature at die entry |
|---|---|---|---|

| Adhesive tie | PEX-to-EVOH bonding | 0.05–0.10 mm | 200–220 °C |
| EVOH | Oxygen diffusion barrier | 0.10–0.15 mm | 210–230 °C |
| Adhesive tie | EVOH-to-PEX bonding | 0.05–0.10 mm | 200–220 °C |
| PE-Xa inner | Fluid contact and elastic recovery | 0.5–1.0 mm | 190–205 °C |
A hydronic snow-melt mat operating with 35 vol% propylene glycol does not require the same creep design margin as a 95 °C process line. Circuits are embedded in 150 mm concrete slabs with 15 mm PEX-a tube spaced at 150–300 mm centers, and the heat output recommended by ASHRAE guidance for residential ramps is 130–250 W/m². Supply fluid temperatures are normally limited to 40–60 °C to avoid concrete thermal stress. The pipe must be protected from UV exposure during staging; storage outdoors longer than 60 days without opaque covering is not recommended because surface oxidation accelerates creep crack initiation. Field leak testing after slab placement is carried out at 0.5 MPa air or 0.6 MPa water for 15 minutes per local plumbing code. Published data for HE2550 specifically in snow-melt loading below 0.35 MPa is limited, but its use in this low-temperature, low-pressure domain is well established.
In district heating secondary loops, HE2550 is extruded into service pipes for pre-insulated flexible twin-pipe systems, with polyurethane foam insulation and a corrugated high-density polyethylene casing. The service pipe is exposed to continuous supply temperatures of 80 °C and peak temperatures of 95 °C at a design pressure of 6 bar under EN 15632-1. The oxygen barrier is required to prevent corrosion of carbon steel heat interface units; measured permeability must remain below 0.1 g/(m³·d) at 80 °C. The PE-Xa surface is corona-treated to 38–42 mN/m before foam application to promote adhesion to polyurethane; peel adhesion is checked with a 180-degree peel test. Thermal expansion of PE-Xa is approximately 1.4 × 10-4 K-1, but embedded installation converts expansion into compressive strain in the foam. The pipe should not be operated with continuous superheated water above 100 °C, and pressure surges beyond 8 bar require surge vessel protection. Batch-to-batch variance in gel content is controlled within ±3%; values below 70% do not satisfy long-term hydrostatic design basis under ISO 9080 regression analysis.
Closed-loop industrial water networks operating with oxidizing biocides impose a different failure mechanism than potable water. Chlorine dioxide concentrations above 1 mg/L or free chlorine above 4 mg/L at 60 °C initiate chain scission in the crosslinked polyethene network; the pipe wall loses elongation at break before hydrostatic failure occurs. Elongation after crosslinking is measured according to ISO 6259-1 on dumbbell specimens; a drop below 200% indicates oxidative embrittlement. Antioxidant depletion is measurable by oxidative induction time under ISO 11357-6. The compound is not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, or strong oxidizing acids; chemical compatibility must be confirmed under ISO 4433 or with published chemical resistance lists. For abrasive slurries, flow velocity is limited to 1.0 m/s, and suspended solids above 500 mg/L produce erosion at elbows. Process lines operating at 40 °C and 0.8 MPa with deionized water are acceptable; however, stagnant dead legs above 50 °C accelerate antioxidant depletion. Melt temperature excursions above 210 °C during compound processing increase chain scission and reduce long-term oxidative induction time; the stabilizer package is depleted faster when regrind levels exceed 10% in the extruder feed.
Typically, manifold trunk-and-branch configurations using 16 mm to 32 mm PEX-a tubing are subject to flow-velocity limits rather than material hydrostatic limits. The pipe is installed with cold-expansion fittings conforming to ASTM F1960; the crosslinked PEX-a network provides elastic memory after the tube is expanded to 1.25–1.35 times nominal internal diameter. Fitting retention depends on gel content above 70%; lower crosslink density reduces closure force and increases creep relaxation. In multi-storey risers, pressure class is selected at PN 10 at 20 °C, and maximum velocity is kept below 2.0 m/s for cold water and 1.0 m/s for hot water to control noise and erosion. The minimum bend radius for unsupported tube is 5 times outside diameter; kinking below 3 times outside diameter produces stress whitening and local gel network damage. Hydrostatic proof testing after installation is performed at 1.5 times the service pressure for 30 minutes according to local plumbing code. The compound is not suitable for direct burial under high point loads without sleeving, and contact with oil-based caulks or solder flux must be avoided during installation.
