Single-layer potable water storage tanks manufactured from Borecene RM8403 are typically produced on shuttle or carousel rotational moulding machines with cast aluminium or sheet steel mould shells. The powder is charged at a particle size distribution controlled through a 35–60 mesh screen (250–500 μm); when the supplied stock is pellet rather than powder, ambient pulverizing should keep the powder bed below 45 °C to preserve the antioxidant and UV stabilizer package. Oven chamber air is set between 260 °C and 280 °C for wall sections of 6–12 mm. The peak internal air temperature is held at 195–205 °C for 8–15 min, depending on total wall mass and mould parting-line area. A primary-to-secondary axis speed ratio of 4:1 is used for most symmetrical tanks; large flat walls may require 2:1 to prevent asymmetric powder accumulation. Cooling is staged: forced air lowers the part surface to 80 °C before water mist is introduced, and demoulding is delayed until the surface is below 70 °C to reduce post-mould shrinkage. Production-floor failure modes include pinholes at parting-line pins, inner-surface oxidation from over-cure, and thin-out at lower tank corners where the melt first reaches the mould. For potable water contact, the finished assembly is tested under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61; in the United Kingdom, a Regulation 31 approval may be required. The base resin is typically supported by a formulation certificate referencing 21 CFR 177.1520 or Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, but these are not automatic final-tank approvals. Closed-loop regrind from the same moulding cell should not exceed 20 wt% without re-testing because migration behaviour changes with reprocessing history. Published data for this specific tank configuration with regrind is limited; therefore a first-run migration check is required before production release.
In agricultural holding tanks for liquid fertilisers, herbicides and diluted crop-protection products, RM8403 is rotomoulded at wall thicknesses of 8–15 mm. The resin is used in natural or carbon-black pigmented form; if carbon black is not pre-compounded, a PE-based masterbatch is dry-blended at 2–3 wt%. Higher let-down ratios reduce cold-temperature dart impact and should be avoided in tanks that remain outdoors in continental climates. The polyethylene matrix resists dilute acids, alkalis and aqueous salt solutions, but it is not suitable for strong oxidising acids, bromine, chlorinated solvents or aromatic hydrocarbons at elevated temperature. Swelling of the inner surface under such fluids reduces hoop stress capacity and accelerates environmental stress cracking. The rotomoulding cycle should target a peak internal air temperature of 200 °C; over-cure creates a brittle oxidative skin at the liquid interface. Tanks supplied as dangerous-goods packaging are tested under the UN IBC code for rigid plastics, 31H, with drop, stack and leakproofness tests at -18 °C. If the unit is used only on the farm and not offered for transport, the UN package test is not automatically required, but the same drop-impact standard is often written into the buyer’s inspection plan. Moulded-in inserts for drains and valves must be round rather than rectangular; rectangular inserts create notches at the boss edge. The moulder should request chemical compatibility data for the aggressive formulated product at the storage temperature, because formulations with hydrocarbon solvents can shift the failure mode from slow crack growth to rapid stress cracking. A two-layer structure with a different inner resin is sometimes used for aggressive products, but RM8403 is normally considered only as a monolayer candidate.
On carousel rotational moulding machines with multiple arms, one-thousand-litre IBCs and heavy-duty pallet bins are produced from RM8403. The grade at 0.940 g/cm³ density (ISO 1183-1) and an MFR of 4.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg (ISO 1133-1) flows well into ribs and inserts, but the inner corner radius must be held above 10 mm; sharper radii cause voiding at the base boss. Moulds are usually cast aluminium with a textured inner surface. Where a steel frame is fitted after demoulding, differential shrinkage can alter the bolt-hole pitch; the processor should maintain a controlled cooling rate and measure the pitch on a fixed fixture rather than on the mould alone. In service, warehouse pallet bins are stacked up to four high, so bottom-unit loads can exceed 4,000 kg. Short-term tensile modulus is less informative than creep modulus measured under ISO 899-2. Compression limiters at bolt holes prevent creep closure and maintain clamp force. The polymer is not recommended for prolonged contact with strong organic acids above 40 °C; aggressive label adhesives and cleaner residues can plasticise the surface and reduce stress-crack resistance. IBCs intended for dangerous goods must meet the UN IBC test series at -18 °C; this requires prototype wall-thickness verification because notched laboratory impact data alone cannot capture the effect of moulded-in stress concentration.
For small-craft hulls, sit-on-top kayaks, floating dock elements and mooring buoys, RM8403 is rotomoulded with wall thicknesses of 4–8 mm for hulls and up to 12 mm for foamed dock floats. In marine use the critical control point is not the chemical environment but low-temperature ductility and ultraviolet weathering. The resin carries a UV-stabiliser package, but the final pigmentation changes ageing performance. Light colours and translucent panels require accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 for at least 3,000 h with retention of tensile elongation above 50 % of the original value. During moulding, shuttle machines with aluminium shells are run with oven set points near 270 °C. Foam-filled floats are produced by co-charging a chemical blowing agent with the powder; if the peak internal air temperature remains below 190 °C, the inner powder surface does not sinter completely and water can migrate at the foam-polymer interface. In service, harbour hydrocarbon films and barnacle cleaning agents can attack the surface over time. Bolted hardware is a common failure source: drilled holes create notch stress in the polyethylene wall, while moulded-in brass or stainless inserts with a shoulder reduce notch sensitivity. Regulatory approval for small craft focuses on stability and flotation rather than material certification; the moulder should refer to ISO 12217-1 for stability and buoyancy assessment and to applicable local construction rules. Published data for RM8403 in foamed marine floats is limited, so full-scale flotation testing remains necessary.
At wall thicknesses of 4–8 mm, outdoor playground slides, tunnels, panels and stepping components are rotomoulded from RM8403. The lower wall mass reduces weight and material input but requires a narrow heating-cooling window to prevent asymmetric warpage. Moulds are usually polished aluminium; the resin reproduces fine texture without heavy mould-release agents. Consumer playground equipment must comply with EN 1176-1 and, in North America, ASTM F1487 for structural integrity and entrapment geometry. If the component is accessible to children, heavy metal migration is assessed under EN 71-3. Post-industrial recyclate should be avoided in play structures unless the recyclate supplier provides REACH Article 33 disclosure and heavy metal data. A PE-based UV masterbatch at 2–3 wt% is common for red, yellow and blue parts; the let-down must be adjusted to maintain the pigment manufacturer’s recommended volume concentration. Over-pigmentation lowers dart impact and can create notch-sensitive behaviour at the mould parting line. Flame-retardant additives are usually unnecessary for outdoor playground parts; halogenated flame retardants should be avoided because they degrade ESCR and may conflict with public-procurement requirements. RM8403 is not inherently slip-resistant; textured surfaces and foot plates need mechanical profiling or co-moulded elastomer inserts to meet wet friction expectations.
Rotomoulded diesel reservoirs for agricultural machinery, construction equipment and generator sets are produced with RM8403 in wall thicknesses of 6–15 mm. The material shows good resistance to diesel fuel at ambient temperature, but polyethylene is not a barrier resin. Published data for RM8403-specific hydrocarbon permeation is limited. Petrol and high-aromatic solvents are unsuitable without fluorination or sulfonation of the inner surface. For diesel storage, continuous headspace contact at 40 °C can produce odour and hydrocarbon emissions; final-tank builders often apply surface fluorination to reduce diesel permeation, but fluorination changes surface chemistry and must be validated for insert welding and fitting adhesion. Low-temperature performance is verified by drop testing the filled tank at -20 °C with a water/ethylene glycol mixture; notched Charpy data alone do not capture the influence of wall thickness, frame restraint and filler-neck bosses. Observed failure initiation sites are the strap points and filler neck boss, where the metal frame concentrates load. UV exposure at the top surface requires the same weathering review as marine parts, with ISO 4892-2 data reviewed for black and grey colours. Electrostatic discharge is a known limitation because polyethylene is an insulator; without an antistatic inner layer or external grounding design, the tank cannot dissipate static charge. OEMs should review hazardous-area requirements only if the tank is installed in a classified area under IEC 60079-10-1; otherwise normal engine grounding recommendations apply. The processor should also avoid aggressive cleaning solvents on the inner surface, because solvent residues can accelerate stress cracking at the lower fuel interface.
For buried valve boxes, septic tanks and wastewater treatment chambers, RM8403 is rotomoulded at wall thicknesses of 10–18 mm. The thick sections require a longer cycle than thin playground panels; peak internal air temperature is held at 200–210 °C and cooling is slowed to avoid inner-surface shrinkage porosity. Soil and traffic loads are calculated using a design method such as EN 12566-1 or a national structural annex; the resulting long-term strain must remain below the creep modulus determined under ISO 899-2. Stress crack resistance is screened under ASTM D1693, but for buried service the full-notch creep test under ISO 16770 is more informative because it gives a ductile-brittle transition that correlates with slow crack growth in notched pipe and tank geometries. Actual field failures occur at the inlet/outlet pipe bosses and at the transition between sidewall and base; these zones must have radiused transitions and no abrupt wall-section changes. The material is exposed to anaerobic effluent, hydrogen sulfide and household cleaning agents; strong oxidising chemicals are not expected in normal service. If soil is contaminated with hydrocarbons, the polyethylene may swell and lose stiffness, so a barrier membrane or upgraded resin should be specified. No separate material approval is generally issued for underground structures; compliance is demonstrated by the system supplier under EN 12566-1 or the applicable national code.
