Application of Borealis Borecene MDPE RM8342RC
For single-skin chemical storage tanks with nominal capacity between **500 L** and **30,000 L**, Borealis Borecene RM8342RC is specified where the stored medium alternates between acidic and alkaline streams and where uncoated carbon steel fails by pitting corrosion. The grade is converted from pellets to a rotational moulding powder. Typical melt mass-flow rate is **4.0 g/10 min** at **190 °C/2.16 kg** under **ISO 1133-1**; density is **0.934 g/cm³** under **ISO 1183-1**. Powder size reduction targets a **35 mesh** distribution with less than **1%** retained on a **500 µm** sieve. Apparent density ranges from **0.38 g/cm³** to **0.45 g/cm³** measured by **ASTM D1895-96**. Dry flow is normally held between **25 s/100 g** and **35 s/100 g** on a standard funnel. Moulds are fabricated from mild steel or cast aluminium. For cylindrical vertical tanks above **5000 L**, wall thickness is not uniform by design. The juncture of the vertical wall and the bottom knuckle radius is thickened to **7–9 mm** because hydrostatic pressure at the base is higher. Biaxial rotation speed ratio is set at **4:1** primary to secondary for cylindrical shapes. Oven setpoint is **280–300 °C**. The mould is removed when peak internal air temperature reaches **190–200 °C**. The usable plateau is narrow: below **185 °C** the inner surface contains uncoalesced powder particles, and above **205 °C** the inner surface begins oxidative discoloration and micro-bubble formation. This **±10 °C** process band on peak internal air temperature is the main control parameter. Production-scale ovens with uneven air circulation can show **8–12 °C** temperature spread across a large mould. Operators compensate by extending dwell time at the lower bound but must avoid exceeding the upper bound at hot spots. Peak shear rates in rotational moulding are typically below **10 s⁻¹**; particle coalescence therefore depends on polymer melt viscosity and powder bed densification rather than shear heating. Dry-blended additives for this end use comprise a hindered amine light stabilizer concentrate at **0.5–2.0 phr**, a hindered phenolic primary antioxidant at **0.05–0.15 phr**, and a phosphite secondary antioxidant at **0.05–0.15 phr**. Zinc stearate is limited to **0.02–0.08 phr** as an acid scavenger. Higher zinc stearate loadings act as mould release but reduce long-term environmental stress crack resistance in alkaline media. Amine-based antistatic packages are avoided because their decomposition products reduce long-term ESCR. The material is not recommended for continuous immersion in aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated solvents at temperatures above **25 °C**. Silicone or PTFE-based semi-permanent release agents are applied to the mould at **2–3 µm** dry film thickness. Excessive release agent transfers to the inner surface and interferes with any post-mould adhesive bonding. Finished tanks are fitted with polyethylene flanges and encapsulated threaded inserts. Shrinkage after demoulding is accommodated by a **24 h** conditioning period at **23 ± 2 °C** before flange flatness inspection. Ovality tolerance is typically **2 mm/m** of nominal diameter.

During heating, the powder undergoes particle coalescence, densification, and bubble removal. Insufficient peak internal air temperature leaves porosity at the inner wall because the low-shear process cannot compact the last powder layer. Overheating consumes antioxidants at the inner wall and causes discoloration from carbonyl formation. The process window is therefore narrower than for injection moulding. After melt densification, the mould enters a cooling chamber where forced air lowers internal air temperature to **80–90 °C**, followed by water fog to **50 °C**. Cooling rate is the main control for shrinkage and flange flatness. Parts cooled slowly in the crystallisation interval show tighter flange geometry than parts quenched at high air velocity. Large tanks above **3000 L** are typically cooled with forced air only for the first **15 min** to reduce thermal gradient between the thick knuckle radius and the upper wall. The end products include upright cylindrical chemical storage tanks, double-wall containment tanks, and secondary containment sumps.

What Restricts Peak Internal Air Temperature in Two-Piece Septic Tank Moulding?

Two-piece septic tank shells are produced with split aluminium moulds that have steel guide pins and removable end domes. Wall thickness at inlet and outlet baffle bosses is locally **2.5–3.0 times** the nominal shell wall because the boss is produced by an insert that heats more slowly. The heating cycle is terminated when peak internal air temperature reaches **185–195 °C**, a slightly lower band than for chemical tanks. The lower target is necessary because the thin end domes reach the upper degradation threshold before the thick boss inserts reach full melt coalescence. Ovens running at **310 °C** are used only when the mould wall thickness is below **8 mm**; for heavier moulds the higher setpoint creates outer surface oxidation on the dome sections. A thermocouple protruding **50 mm** into the cavity monitors free air space temperature. If the boss is not fully coalesced, a brittle boundary layer appears after demoulding as a white ring around the insert. This defect is detected by **3×** visual inspection and a torque test of the threaded insert at **10 N·m**. Carbon black masterbatch is incorporated at **2.0–2.5 weight percent** for sewage treatment modules installed outdoors. Loading is measured by ash content after **6 h** at **600 °C** in a muffle furnace. Carbon black dispersion is assessed by film optical microscopy at **100×**. Structural water tightness of the finished assembly is tested under **EN 12566-1** for small wastewater treatment systems. In Australia and New Zealand, **AS/NZS 1546.1** is referenced for onsite domestic wastewater treatment units. The two-piece moulded shell is joined by butt fusion at the mid-flange. Leak tests are run at **0.1 bar** for **1 h** with the shell filled. Cooling of two-piece shells uses air only until the mould surface is **80 °C**; water mist is then introduced at **1.5 L/min** per mould half. Cooling too quickly at the mid-flange causes warpage that must be corrected by post-mould clamping. The material is not specified for continuous service above **60 °C**; hot discharges from washing machines should be tempered before entering the PE shell. Finished products include single-chamber septic tanks of **3000–5000 L**, pump chambers, and aeration reactor bases.

Alkaline Fertigation Formulations Exert Two-Way Migration Stress on Cone-Bottom Tanks

In agricultural fertigation storage, cone-bottom vertical tanks are rotationally moulded from RM8342RC to handle liquid ammonium nitrate, urea, calcium nitrate, and micronutrient chelates. The absence of weld lines in a rotomoulded cone bottom is the primary process advantage. Welded flat-bottom tanks fail preferentially at weld toes when the stored fluid has a pH above **9.5** or below **3.0**. Chemical resistance is evaluated by **ISO 175:2010** immersion for **28 days** at **40 °C** in the specific fertiliser blend. Mass change should be below **1.0%** and tensile elongation retention above **80%** after immersion for blend compatibility confirmation. No single global tank design standard covers all agricultural chemical mixes; project specifications commonly combine **EN 13575** with a chemical resistance test. UV stabiliser masterbatch is added at **1.5–3.0 phr** for outdoor service in full-sun environments. For clear liquid storage, titanium dioxide white masterbatch at **2.0–3.5 phr** is used to reduce surface temperature and to mask interior staining from iron chelates. Chloride-containing additives are avoided at levels above **150 ppm**. Concentrated potassium hydroxide solutions should be limited to temperatures below **40 °C** because high-pH stress cracking can initiate at the porous cone apex if peak internal air temperature during moulding was below **185 °C**. The cone angle is typically **30°** from vertical for sludge-free drainage. The cone transition is programmed for a nominal wall thickness of **7 mm**; the top cylindrical shell is **5–6 mm**. Mould rotation for the cone section uses a speed ratio of **5:1** primary to secondary. After demoulding, the tank is cooled on a support jig to maintain the cone axis within **0.5°** of perpendicular. Inserts for bulkhead fittings are encapsulated by heating a PE plug to **200 °C** under rotation; this creates a leak-resistant annular seal without silicone adhesives. Fertigation tanks with cone-bottom geometry are tested for drainability by filling with **500 kg** of water and measuring residual volume after draining at **20 °C**. Acceptable residual volume is below **0.1%** of nominal capacity. Cone apex porosity is evaluated by leak testing with water at **0.1 bar** for **30 min**; fertiliser blends with reduced surface tension may require dye penetrant inspection. End products are bunded cone-bottom tanks of **1000 L to 5000 L** with separate secondary containment sumps.Marine buoyancy shells use a foam-filled medium-density polyethylene outer structure that is rotationally moulded in one piece. For small marker buoys and floating dock floats, RM8342RC is combined with a UV stabiliser masterbatch at **3.0 phr**; this is the practical ceiling because higher additions reduce tensile elongation and increase the risk of shell cracking during foam-fill expansion. The shell is moulded to **6–8 mm** wall thickness using an oven setpoint of **285–300 °C**. Peak internal air temperature is held at **190–200 °C**. After demoulding and cooling below **40 °C**, the shell is drilled for a fill port and two-part rigid polyurethane foam is injected. Foam density is specified between **45 kg/m³ and 60 kg/m³** for buoyancy reserve. Exotherm from the foam must remain below **130 °C** at the polyethylene interface to prevent inner-wall collapse. For marine UV exposure, artificial weathering is screened under **ISO 4892-2** at **0.35 W/m²** at **340 nm** for **1500 h**; a ΔE below **5.0** is typical for black or heavily pigmented shells. Published data for this specific configuration is limited because product qualification is often based on customer-specific impact and buoyancy retention tests rather than a single global design code. Finished products include navigation buoys, foam-filled fenders, and flotation collars for aquaculture platforms.

Food-Contact Insulated Transport Boxes and Polyurethane Foam Filling

When cold-chain distribution boxes require double-wall insulation and food-contact compliance, RM8342RC is used for the inner and outer shell because of low-temperature impact resistance and compliance with olefin polymer food-contact requirements. Material compliance is documented under **FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c)** for use in contact with aqueous and acidic foods, provided the end product meets the overall migration limits of **Regulation (EU) 10/2011** when placed on the EU market. Overall migration testing is carried out according to **EN 1186-1** with simulant selection based on the food type; for aqueous foods, **10 mg/dm²** is the limit. Titanium dioxide white masterbatch is added at **2.0–4.0 phr** to achieve opacity and to keep surface temperature lower under open refrigerated loading. Addition above **5.0 phr** is avoided because the melt viscosity increase can produce pinholing at the narrow vent boss. The inner shell is rotationally moulded to **3–4 mm**; the outer shell to **4–5 mm**. The shells are demoulded at **50 °C** and assembled around a rigid frame. Two-part polyurethane foam of density **35–45 kg/m³** is injected into the cavity. Foam exotherm is controlled to **125 °C** maximum at the PE interface; above **130 °C**, the inner shell can soften and pull away from the foam. **50 mm** of foam at **40 kg/m³** yields a k-value of approximately **0.024 W/(m·K)**; this value is a design parameter for the foam core rather than a property of the polyethylene shell. Finished products include insulated fish tubs with lid-edge gaskets, chilled pharmaceutical shipping boxes, and modular cold-chain pallet bins.
