Application of Borealis Borecene MDPE RM7403

Borealis Borecene RM7403 is a rotomoulding-grade medium density polyethylene; manufacturer technical datasheet values include density 934 kg/m³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and melt flow rate 3.5 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg. The application scope in this section is restricted to rotational moulding and associated secondary fabrication where powder sintering, peak internal air temperature, cooling-rate control, and environmental stress cracking resistance control the usable service envelope.

What Limits Wall-Thickness Consistency in Potable Water Tank Rotational Moulding?

Potable water storage tanks are produced as one-piece stressed shells, and the sector uses RM7403 at 100 parts with a PE-carrier pigment masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt%; the addition ratio is deliberately narrow because higher masterbatch concentrations introduce a separate low-molecular-weight phase that can reduce weld-line strength and environmental stress crack resistance. The controlling compliance set includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers in contact with aqueous food, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex I with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm², NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for potable water system components, and ASTM D1998-21 for polyethylene vertical storage tanks. On production lines, aluminium moulds are mounted on three-arm carousel machines with closed-loop oven control of ±5 °C; forced-air oven setpoints between 270 °C and 290 °C bring the internal air temperature to 190–205 °C before cooling at 2–5 °C/min to demould at 70–80 °C. Wall-thickness consistency is influenced by the powder pool size, mould rotation ratio, and oven air velocity; production-scale observations on rotary carousel machines show that thinning of the lower sidewall increases when the primary-to-secondary rotation ratio falls below 4:1. Terminal finished parts are vertical cylindrical tanks from 500 L to 10,000 L, rectangular rainwater harvesting shells, and baffled potable water distribution tanks.

In intermediate bulk container and chemical storage tank programmes, post-consumer regrind is typically prohibited because cold-temperature impact response and UN type-approval pedigree are no longer fully traceable once reworked material enters the mould. RM7403 is processed at 100 wt% virgin resin, with external colour supplied by 0.5–2.0 wt% of a PE-carrier masterbatch; antistatic packages based on amine chemistry are excluded from this application due to surface migration effects and ESCR interference under ASTM D1693-15, Condition B, 100% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C. Compliance for dangerous goods service is assessed under UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.5 for rigid plastics intermediate bulk containers, ADR/RID Chapter 4.1 packaging requirements, and EN 13341:2005+A1:2011 for static thermoplastic storage vessels where the stored fluid falls within the standard’s scope. The rotational moulding cycle for 5 mm to 12 mm walls uses oven residence from 18 min to 35 min; the thermocouple-in-mould peak internal air temperature is held at 195–210 °C, after which two-stage cooling with initial air velocity 8–10 m/s is reduced to 2–3 m/s to control warpage. Terminal products include open-top chemical dosing tanks, double-wall containment basins, UN-rated IBC outer shells, and sodium hypochlorite day tanks for water treatment.

Agricultural Sprayer and Fertigation Reservoirs—Ultraviolet Ageing and Seasonal Thermal Cycling

In agricultural sprayer and fertigation reservoirs, repeated thermal expansion, prolonged UV irradiation, and liquid fertilisers with pH values as low as 4.0 determine the long-term service envelope, so the specification combines a weathering stabiliser package with a thick-wall rotomoulding cycle. The formulation addition ratio is 100 parts RM7403 to 1.0–2.0 wt% HALS/UV-absorber masterbatch; carbon black is only used for black tanks at 1.5–2.5 wt%, and the higher black loading requires a reduction in oven setpoint of 5–10 °C because the darker surface absorbs more radiant heat. Compliance is split among REACH Annex XVII restrictions, national water pollution control rules such as 40 CFR Part 112 in the United States, and EN 13341:2005+A1:2011 for static thermoplastic storage tanks where the stored fertiliser falls within the scope. Downstream production is performed on shuttle or carousel rotomoulding machines with fabricated steel moulds; the mould is rotated at a primary-to-secondary ratio of 4:1 to 8:1, and cooling is staged to avoid stress cracking at threaded insert areas. Terminal finished parts include tractor-mounted sprayer tanks from 200 L to 1,500 L, fertigation reservoirs up to 5,000 L, and livestock drinking troughs.

For material handling containers produced in closed-loop logistics systems, forklift tine impact, repeated stacking, and low-temperature drop are more significant than long-term hydrostatic load. The resin is used at 80–100 wt% virgin with 0–20 wt% post-industrial regrind; the upper limit is set at 20 wt% because higher regrind fractions increase visible pigment swirl and reduce surface repeatability on show faces. Pallet boxes and similar load carriers are tested under ISO 8611-1:2021 for pallet performance, while insulated fish tubs that contact food are evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Production takes place on three-station shuttle or carousel machines using aluminium moulds with internal tie bars; foam-filled or box-section ribs are formed by placing pre-cut PE foam inserts in the mould before charging, and the peak internal air temperature is maintained at 190–205 °C for 20–30 min. Terminal products include collapsible pallet boxes, insulated fish transport tubs, and side-loading waste containers used in food processing plants.

When RM7403 Is Specified for Playground Panels and Rotomoulded Recreation Parts, Impact Energy Absorption After UV Ageing Becomes the Controlling Variable

Outdoor play structure components require a balance between high impact energy absorption and resistance to ultraviolet embrittlement. The formulation addition ratio is 100 parts RM7403 with 1.0–2.0 wt% UV-stabiliser masterbatch; for light-coloured panels, titanium dioxide is incorporated at 1.5–2.0 wt% to maintain opacity and reduce surface chalking. Compliance for the finished part is evaluated under EN 1176-1:2017 for playground equipment and surfaces, ASTM F1487-21 for public playground equipment in the United States, and EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of certain elements if the panel is intended as a child-accessible component. The rotomoulding process uses shuttle machines with cast aluminium cavity moulds; double-wall panels are produced by charging the powder into a sealed cavity with internal standoffs, heating to a peak internal air temperature of 195–210 °C, then cooling in a constrained jig to prevent localised warpage at ribs and mounting bosses. Terminal finished product types include climbable play panels, slide shells, kayak hulls, and rotationally moulded ride-on toy shells.

Under marine aquaculture service conditions, sealed double-wall floats are exposed to internal air expansion from diurnal temperature variation, continuous flexural loading in waves, and brackish water contact; RM7403 is used at 100 wt% virgin material with 1.0–2.5 wt% UV/HALS masterbatch, and no regrind is permitted because internal porosity creates crack-initiation sites under cyclic hull loading. There is no single marine-specific polymer standard covering rotomoulded floats; compliance is managed through REACH Annex XVII, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 where the float is used in contact with potable water, and the relevant aquaculture licensing conditions for the installation. Production is performed on carousel machines with fabricated steel or cast aluminium moulds; walls are moulded at 4–6 mm, and the cooling cycle is extended to 40–60 min to stabilise shrinkage before demould. Terminal products include pontoon floats, fish cage collar floats, dredging floats, and cable floats for marine farms.
