Application of Borealis Borecene Compact MDPE RM8406

Double-wall agricultural sprayer and storage tanks are rotationally moulded from Borealis Borecime Compact MDPE RM8406 on carousel and shuttle machines with tool swing diameters up to 3,400 mm. Incoming resin batch checks include melt flow rate testing to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg and density testing to ISO 1183-1:2019. Oven air temperature is maintained between 270 °C and 310 °C, while the internal air temperature is raised to 180–210 °C and held for 3–6 min before cooling starts. Wall thickness is specified at 6–12 mm for tank volumes from 400 L to 10,000 L. The primary-to-secondary axis speed ratio is set at 4:1, with secondary axis speeds of 4–8 rpm depending on tool offset. Oven residence time is normally 18–35 min; batch-to-batch melt flow variation outside the supplier control window can shift the required peak internal air temperature point by 2–4 min. Forced-air cooling at 20–35 °C is used before demoulding below 70 °C. Demoulding above this temperature increases parting-line axial shrinkage beyond 2.5%. The chemical-contact layer is compounded with carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–3.5 wt%, producing a carbon black content of 1.0–2.2% by ASTM D1603-14. Hydrostatic design and weathering criteria follow EN 13575-1:2012 and ASTM D1998-21. End products include saddle tanks, nurse trailers, and vertical chemical storage units for dilute fertilisers, pesticides, and adjuvants. Continuous exposure to aromatic solvents at elevated temperature is outside the recommended service envelope unless immersion testing under ASTM D543-21 demonstrates acceptable mass and tensile retention.

How Does ESCR Data Govern UN Certification of RM8406 IBC Bodies?

Rotationally moulded intermediate bulk container bottles for chemical transport are produced as 31H1 rigid plastic IBC bodies under UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.5. Stress-cracking resistance of RM8406 is benchmarked with ASTM D1693-15b condition B in 100% Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C, and with ISO 22088-2:2006 bent strip testing. The bottle wall is normally 4–8 mm thick. Oven air temperature is limited to 260–300 °C to avoid inner-surface oxidation when the part reaches an internal air temperature of 190–210 °C. Virgin RM8406 is used in the chemical-contact layer; production re-grind of the same material is limited to 20 wt% of the outer layer, consistent with UN 6.5.2.4.1 reuse provisions. Carbon black masterbatch is let down at 2.0–2.5 wt% for outdoor storage UV resistance. Drop testing is performed at −18 °C per 49 CFR 178.703 and equivalent ADR 6.5.4.8 requirements. Hydraulic pressure testing applies 100 kPa gauge pressure for 10 min under the 31H1 classification sequence. Stacking load is applied at 1.8 times the maximum permissible gross mass for 28 days at 23 °C. Published multi-axial impact data for this exact RM8406 configuration is limited to line-specific certification reports. End products are 1,000 L IBC bottles mounted in steel grids or pallet frames for bulk transport of aqueous chemicals, lubricant additives, and water-treatment compounds.

For marine buoy shells and aquaculture floats, RM8406 is processed with a UV stabiliser masterbatch at 3.0–5.0 wt% and a pigment masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt%. The process uses a lower oven temperature of 260–285 °C to protect the stabiliser package from thermal degradation during the extended oven residence time of 25–40 min. Wall thickness is held at 8–14 mm for mooring buoys and 5–9 mm for oyster floats. The primary-to-secondary axis speed ratio is 4:1, with secondary axis speeds of 6–12 rpm for buoy shells with deeply offset geometry. Slow cooling at 0.5–1.0 K/min is preferred over water-quench cycles because fast cooling suppresses the ductile-brittle transition and can reduce low-temperature puncture impact resistance measured by ISO 6603-2:2000. UV resistance is verified with ASTM G154-23 cycle 1 and ISO 4892-2:2013 method A. Flotation cores are inserted after demoulding through spin-welded or clamped closure rings. End products include mooring buoys, aquaculture floats, and fender shells exposed to saltwater and sunlight.

When RM8406 Replaces HDPE in Water Treatment Vessel Linings

Replacement of HDPE with RM8406 in water-treatment vessels is specified where stress-cracking resistance and low-temperature ductility are more critical than top-load stiffness. The liner wall thickness is increased to 10–16 mm to compensate for the lower flexural modulus of MDPE. Oven air temperature is set at 275–300 °C, and internal air temperature is raised to 190–210 °C. Low-shear melt viscosity of MDPE rotomoulding grades is typically 1,000–3,000 Pa·s at 190 °C and 0.1 s−1; this envelope controls bubble removal and wall-thickness uniformity in heavily flanged linings. Reference crystallisation temperatures measured by ISO 11357-3:2018 fall between 112 °C and 118 °C at 10 K/min. The cooling rate is therefore constrained below 2.0 K/min across the 120–85 °C interval to limit warpage in flanged manway openings. Oxidation induction time is measured by ISO 11357-6:2018 at 210 °C in oxygen; a minimum of 20 min is typically required for water-service linings. Carbon black masterbatch is let down at 2.0–2.5 wt%. Antistatic or amine-based additive masterbatches are excluded because polar additives can reduce oxidative stability in chlorinated water. Chemical compatibility for hypochlorite dosing, ferric chloride, and sulfuric acid at 20% concentration is evaluated by ASTM D543-21 immersion testing at 40 °C for 30 days. End products include filter vessel shells, brine tanks, and dosing skid tanks for municipal and industrial water treatment.

Material Handling Hoppers and Granular Food-Contact Bins

RM8406 is rotationally moulded into hoppers, tote bins, and ingredient handling containers for dry bulk food materials. The food-contact formulation uses virgin RM8406 without post-consumer recyclate; masterbatch addition is limited to food-approved colour at 1.0–2.0 wt%. Compliance is established under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers and EU 10/2011 with overall migration testing per EN 1186-1:2002. Mould surfaces are cleaned with approved release agents, and demoulding is performed below 65 °C to avoid stress whitening around corner radii. Oven air temperature is 265–290 °C, wall thickness is 6–10 mm, and internal air temperature reaches 185–200 °C. Corners require minimum internal radii of 25 mm and draft angles of 2–3° to maintain wall thickness. Ultrasonic thickness checks are performed at 12 points per part following ASTM E797/E797M-21. End products include 500–1,500 L mobile hoppers, ingredient bins, and cleanroom-compatible tote boxes.

Where public playground equipment is specified for outdoor exposure, RM8406 is rotomoulded with a UV masterbatch at 3.0–5.0 wt%, pigment masterbatch at 1.0–3.0 wt%, and a slip-resistant texture additive at 0.5–1.0 wt%. Oven air temperature is set to 260–290 °C, and the nominal wall thickness is 5–8 mm for roof panels, slide decks, and tunnel sections. Moulding includes textured in-mould surfaces to meet slip resistance expectations under EN 1176-1:2018 and ASTM F1487-21. Flammability of the finished component is tested by EN 13501-1:2018 where site regulations require building-material classification. Heavy-metal content in pigmented layers is restricted to the migration limits of EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for toys. Colour-fastness under synthetic perspiration and sunscreen exposure is verified by ISO 105-E04:2013. End products include tunnel covers, roof panels, slide hoods, and equipment enclosures used in public playgrounds and park furniture.
